Like when I toilet trained my cats I just put their litter box on the toilet for a while until they understood "this is where you go". One day I just stopped cleaning it, and I stuck it on the floor when it got really nasty, and they understood "you can either poop in this smelly fucked up cavern or this nice, clean porcelain bowl" and they started using the toilet. Cats don't respond to negative reinforcement at all. It's not the best way to train a dog either, they respond very well to positve reinforcement, but there are times where you just need to smack your dog in the nose with a rolled up magazine, they understand dominance and have the pack mentality to where they know that means "I'm in charge, bitch".

Strange thing there. She loves to play tug of war and all that but she is pretty obedient when not playing. She killed a rabbit once (I think on accident because of past things she has caught) and it was very tenderly handled. She lead to the death of another rabbit (it broke its neck in our fence trying to escape) and she brought it bleeding onto our deck. Another time she fucking caught a bird out of the air and just had it in her mouth until I told her to drop it. Cats are simply more difficult to bond with than dogs are and not as domesticated or trainable. But it's still possible. Mine greets me at the door when I come home, follows me around, sleeps on me, and alerts me when someone is outside the house. Basically everything a dog should do, with the bonus that you do not need to groom him and he doesn't slobber. He even plays fetch with his mouse toy.
