My mom dated a guy who was a former hanger-on for the Sons of Silence after getting out of the army in the early 80s.
He had wanted to join but after hanging out with them, basically opted to just be a glorified groupie (or hanger on) until he finally had to get back into straight society after he got his rebellious streak out of his system. Needless to say, he had a very negative opinion of them
