The thing about mlp is that it was a show specifically designed for little girls, whereas manga and anime is a broad medium made for virtually every age group, there's just so many subgenres that you don't even know about because you judge all anime as being like Pokemon and the lineup that plays alongside Western cartoons on Saturday mornings.
