The wonders of Ancient Egypt were due in large part to the civilizations proximity to the Nile River. Being a few hundred miles closer to the Nile is the difference between a society prospering and one dicking around in the desert for years.
For a contemporary example, Asians existed under oppressive dicks and not much innovation happened. Oppressive dicks go away and in the 1980s, everything said "Made in Japan" on it.
