It was actually pretty funny, because they all attempted to rush the same strategy, that is get chariot archers and then bum rush each other. If you play as a smaller country you are definitely going to have to get more savvy with getting cash.
In regards to taking land fast without having fabricated claims, that also requires savvy strategy. Use marriage and people who have claims on kingdoms, then push those claims on a person who is already your vassal. Once he owns the kingdom, he is still your vassal. This also works for duchies and kingdoms, just make sure you are one rank above what you are pushing for.

Yes you can. You can influence the population to the political party of your choosing and once that party wins an election, or a successful revolution, then that party is in control. And with certain parties you can do certain things. You can be totalitarian or let the people to themselves.
I suggest you look up some tutorials on how to play and get the basics in your head. Once you get the hang of it you can pretty much do whatever you would like. It's a real strategy game though. Pretty difficult and there are a lot of things you need to manage. You'll get the hang of it though.
