I get mixed results, but for 250 USD its pretty great. I had a sweet ass job lined up after graduation so I was planning on splurging for nicer glass, but it fell through so the 55-300 will have to do for now. The only problems are the low screw drive focus and tracking objects coming towards the camera but I guess thats true of most systems.

I have a 70-200/2.8, you will need a 1.4x TC for the same reach. 2x TC degrades IQ considerably.

Oh, and the bigger mass means tracking small in-flight birds are difficult or straight no-go. I still keep the 50-200 because it's light, lighter than the 55-300 and the focus is quick for tracking.

The Sigma HSM and the Pentax SDM is not quicker than the screwdrive on the Tamron, at least on the 70-200/2.8 lenses.
And the difference between 200 and 300 is just as significant as the diff. between the 300 and the 450. It just lacks the reach although the lens I used before was also a 200mm. I'll see if the 1.4x TC improves things and keep an eye on any used 150-500 Sigma popping up on ebay.

i have a tamron 1.4x tc but the AF speed decrease seemed to cause a lot of missed shots. and the IQ loss was worse than just cropping, which i usually have to do with just a 300. i guess ill just wait until i hopefully get another dope job offer and then pick up the 150-450 and a 600 f4 or 5.6

Did you try it on a sharp lens or just the 55-300?
The 55-300 was designed with smaller pixel density in mind and quickly reaches it's capability with a TC.
BTW if you are thinking about a 70-200 the Tamron 70-200/2.8 "Macro" is the one I strongly recommend even with the extra hassle on switching to manual focus.

yeah i used the tc on the 55-300. i just got the camera in december, and like i said im a student until next week so i dont have a bunch of money for lenses. but the 70-200 2.8 macro was the one i was looking at, found two for under 600 on ebay.

I once was checking out the Tamron 70-200 too but the lack of CiF and the insufficient reach always made me think twice. Then I found a Sigma Apo 120-400 f4,5/5,6 for $480 and eventually went for it. The Tamron is an optical great lens though.
