You guys seem like a friendly bunch, can somebody recommend a camera for a 100% amateur? Not sure about budget but ideally under $350 USD.
There's countless car meets around my city and I want to do some photography since I have an incredible amount of free time and enough meets for practice. I do nothing on most weekends so this would be a good way to get me out of the house.
>>2820826
Try the gear thread, also any entry level DSLR with a kit lens and kit telezoom lens.
Nikon D3200, Canon 700D, Pentax K-50 are the usually mentioned ones. Getting it used brings the price down.
>>2820697
Yeah the BMW one isn't me, I'm the GT pics anon.
I'd say this one (>>2820411) just missed but technically I still like it - I wouldn't change any settings but if the cars could slow down a tad to not move too quick for my AF I wouldn't complain.
The others are about trying to portray the sense of speed. I had a lot of time as it was a 2 hour race, and Brands Hatch has some places you can get to the inside of corners and get a normal panning shot of every car as it goes by not too quick. but both of the pans were on a straight. Whilst the car isn't crystal clear they were shot at 1/40 and 1/60 on a 100-400mm lens, with the wrong IS setting used. I really like how they portray a sense of speed.

May I ask which of your photos here are yours? You guys post some pretty neat pics since I have been lurking these threads and I've wanted to contribute as little as I can to get some tips from you guys (after I purchase a camera of course)

Any higher entry level or enthusiast level body with a good 70-200/2.8 is an excellent combination, I use the cheaper Tamron 70-200/2.8 non VR though I mostly shoot planes, big ones and RC alike. And for panning even the cheap kit telezooms give decent results, I used it before getting the Tammy.

For less than 1/3rd of the price, even lower when you're buying used.
I've been furiously looking for my plane shots at the local airfield to stay in line at least a little bit with motoring but it looks like I misplaced that hard drive. Damn shame.

Thanks! I have a few more with slower shutter speeds, I had to speed them up to compensate for my autofocus system (I think).
All of the shots I have with cars coming toward me turned out very blurry at slower speeds.

Will do!
I have some that are on a lower angle, our local track has fences around its entirety so there are only a few places to get shots at lower angles.

nice to hear I've inspired someone in some way haha
keep practicing past the point of getting dizzy from too much panning (I've actually done this a few times), and see if there are any foreground objects you can use for interesting blur
shooting through crowds and trees can look pretty cool, although it can sometimes be tricky getting the right angle and distance for it to work
bring a polariser or nd if you've got one also, I try to avoid stopping down further than f/16 when doing low speed pans

How do you retain your focus on the car when shooting through the crowd and fences?
>>2825442
when shooting through things, I usually prefocus using the back button, and have the frame in mind when setting focus
you can sometimes get away with using tracking af on the car, but it can be very unreliable, for obvious reasons
>>2825445
I really need to familiarize myself with back button focusing. It seems to be used fairly regularly with Motorsports.
>>2825452
once you get used to it, you'll never go back
it's a bit awkward when you first start using it, but it becomes second nature rather quickly, really helpful for prefocusing and quickly focusing and recomposing shots (not that the latter applies to most motorsport shots)
>>2825453
That'll be my goal for the next race then! We have a historic race series coming to our track the third week of May and I'll have a D500 with a 200-500mm on loan.
>>2825453
I've just started using it and use this technique for mine. Even the best AF gets lost when there's crowd, fences and other stuff moving through the frame
When shooting still cats like at a car show, should one use a cpl filter or would that depend on what kind of shots you want to make? Or in essence what would you use a cpl filter for when shooting still cars?
>>2825490
for removing unappealing reflections
under ideal lighting conditions, you shouldn't need one, but they are really handy when you've got ugly reflections showing up
shot this without a polariser, but just as the sun was dipping below the horizon

Are you renting, borrowing, or doing this through professional connections? Is Barber your home track?
Back button focus is natural on the pro bodies because the AF-ON button naturally falls under the thumb, unlike the prosumer bodies where AE-L is slightly too far to the left to maintain a good grip and BBF. That's the one thing I like about the Canon X0D cameras, they've got a proper AF-ON button.
>>2825657
Renting from Lensrentals.com, I'll probably buy both if I like the D500 enough.
Yeah Barber Motorsports is ~30minutes away from my apartment.
Hmm I'll have to see where it falls on my D5300. I honestly have never used it, so I don't have any idea on where it actually rests on my camera.
>>2825657
>tfw i was so used to using AE lock as back button AF on my 20D that I have to map AE lock on my 7D to AF even though there's a dedicated AF-ON button right next to it
I can't really think of a good use for AE lock anyway

>>2826745
From all the racing games I've played I've always found there's not one perfect line, depending on the car you can have 2 or 3 different ones. Photography wise, outside the fence it's normally full of old guys with big big glass that set up camp there all day to get the same photo of every car. I like it but feel it's a bit samey given how many other good spots there are at Brands Hatch.

Here's something I'd like to discuss (not just with you, but everyone): For people who shoot regularly at races, how do you catalogue your work? Do you tag the race track, event, and cars? What about for amateur events?
>>2830333
my system is very simple, I catalogue everything in folders with this order
>year
>month
>event
>day of event
>race category/session
so the path to v8 supercars from the grand prix on thursday would be

Lads, a website has said they'll help me get media credentials for races. Apart from a "letter from editor", insurance and website traffic numbers is there anything else I need?

Not F1 or anything, some gt racing and national series.
Just hoping this site gets back to me with that info as I'm pretty happy they think well enough of my photography to offer to help but really want to get applications in.
If I do get the credentials, what are they do's and don'ts?
I'm know to be aware of what's happening on track, listen to marshals, don't chimp at every shot and not get in people's way ect... What about when to arrive and what to do generally?

have you shot as media at any club/lower level events before?
first thing you do when arriving is go to the media centre (if the event is big enough to warrant one), or just the race office, to sign in and sign any relevant forms, some events will require you to sign in each day, check when you sign in on the first day you attend
at bigger events you'll need to pick up a vest that you'll use for the weekend, smaller events you just bring your own most of the time
each circuit and event will have its own specific rules most of the time, so I'll just tell you some general ones that are usually in place here in australia, some of these will be rather obvious also lel
>unless you've been directly given permission face to face by an official, don't go on the track under any circumstances, until the course car signals the course open at the end of each day (very obvious one lel, this might differ in other countries)
>don't obstruct the line of sight between marshal points
>don't lean on/over barriers, leave a gap between you and the barriers, as they will deform if a car hits them
>never sit/lie down when there's cars out on track, a rule I use is to always have the soles of your shoes in contact with the ground
>>2830386

Been a experimenting with different shutter speeds over the past few events.
>1/50 range
Muh panning. But finding half the car doesn't get in focus.
>1/200 range
Far higher rate of clear shots than 1/50th
>1/1000 range
Loads of clear shots but freezes wheels
Obviously a lot is based on what the cars in front of the camera are doing, but am I missing any basic set ups for shooting cars?
>>2831128
distance to subject and direction of subject relative to you are pretty important also
you can get fully sharp shots of cars at 1/50s or slower if the car is a bit of distance away, and travelling perpendicular to you
I quite like the effect of crazy motion blur, with only a minor part of the car sharp, but it's important to make the sharp part of the car something interesting that draws the eye imo

Tfw no windy cold track to shoot cars at
Tfw no dosh to see imsa at mosport in july
With regards to panning speeds: panning effect is dictated by lens motion. A long focal length looking close in can get lots of panning effect in a short time. A wide lens needs a long shutter speed to achieve the same effect (but also has a different effect due to the environment captured).
Generally, i'm finding anything under FL/2 with VR on a tele needs a lot of attention to pan technique. 1/8th is for absolute madmen, i'm already thrown off by blackout by 1/50th. I've not had a chance to shoot wide

While the shutter lag on cameras might make it impossible, try and get the car as it crosses the line, or nearly. Also, pan with the car to make the car sharp. Or don't, because I like the blurred car across the line effect too.

Yeah before anything went out on track a couple of Lamborghini drivers got lost and ended up driving halfway through the infield roads.
But... There was 40 cars in the Super Trofeo and over 50 in the Blancpain series and they all looked gorgeous, I'll put up with the bad driving for actual decent looking cars over the usual club stuff in the UK.

Fortunately I think things like Blancpain are being taken over by up and coming younger drivers and more factory support (WRT Audi for example) but like I said, I personally prefer a grid of legit looking gentlemen drivers than some of the club series that is made up of a bunch of random race cars people have bought cheap and need a place to drive them at 75% every couple of weeks

Also didn't realize Kodak had the money to spend on sponsorship...

If the race takes place on the Nordschleife
a) no income from Touristenfahrten on that day
b) lose people that would buy tickets at the GP circuit because Nordschleife would be for free
c) pretty much impossible to get footage from the cars outside of the GP circuit
VLN/local media services have a solution for c) they now offer an onboard package where you can rent a LTE antenna with a camera for 3000€ per four hour race. You would still have no fixed cameras at the track.
Here is an example of the onboard footage that was streamed to YouTube

I turned contrast up to like +70 in lightroom and felt the photos looked better - better colors in the cars.
What should I change when actually taking photos to not have to do this, don't like having to change a slider that much - would rather take a better photo than lean on lightroom.
>>2841862
Change the JPEG profile to Vivid or similar. That just jacks up the contrast. Beware when shooting higher dynamic range scenes when doing this. The whole (only?) point of shooting RAW is having flexibility in post. You're trading that for convenience and a reliance on being happy with SOOC JPEGs.
Nothing wrong with that, you just need to recognize when that might be a drawback.
>>2841864
So there's nothing settings wise (aperture or whatever) I can do at the time of taking a photo?
I'm usually pretty minimal in adjustments in post, the biggest additions or subtractions I do with the sliders is highlights if there's a lot of glare off the car, and vignette.
>>2841889
You could use a hood to prevent any glare robbing your contrast. I'd say you nailed shutter speed (dat wheel blur) and aperture for that shot. You could make a lightroom preset, I suppose.
>>2841889
Shoot in JPEG rather than raw, and set higher contrast in your camera.
When you shoot raw, you're expected to "lean on" lightroom. It's not leaning on it, it's using it correctly. When someone is making you a pie, do you think that they're taking the easy way out by putting it in the oven to cook it before giving it to you? Do you tell them they should have used better ingredients that didn't need to be baked?
will be back to indy for qualifying and the race, not super happy with anything I got at the gp last weekend

>fuck Silverstone for charging me a £7 "handling fee"
>fuck Goodwood for making customers pay to guarantee the ticket they've bought actually gets to them. Seeing as it's a piece of paper proving they've paid for entry this shouldn't be the case at all.
Anyway... Am I going to be disappointed? I know it'll be busy as fuck but in terms of actual track time for the F1 cars. Planning on being there as early as possible and will just hunker down in a good spot for the first session.

I've got a decent photo today from the British Superbikes, all the normal stuff needed and it's the photo I was trying to take.
But... In the background rather than a bokeh'd bike, the rider is falling and there are sparks and what not off the bike.
The rider didn't walk it off and got ambulance'd from the track, so I'm not sure what to do with the photo?
As I said it's not a reach in me using the photo in terms of it's quality, and a part of me thinks (as long as the rider doesn't die - although no news online yet) that I should use the photo as it's something that happened. I have no doubt people will put video of the crash online, as it wasn't a high-side so not very unusual.

I generally have found that the trick is to lock your upper body by bracing your elbows against your chest, and then pivot from the waist rather than trying to swing the camera with your hands. It's a lot easier to do with a big body and lens than a small DSLR and kit zoom, though.
I've also always found that wider lenses are harder to get good pans out of. You need a slower s/s to blur the background enough in a wide shot, and that can make things pretty tricky. Really long lenses can also be their own can of worms, but I generally find that 100-200mm on FF is the "sweet spot" for easy, consistent pans.
>>2846039
this
I bring my elbows in for slower pans mostly, but remember to make it a whole body movement
you almost want to feel like you're falling into the car's motion perfectly, it takes quite a bit of practice to get any kind of consistency with this, so go out and do it more haha
Do you guys think that hotshoe red dot sight might be useful for slow pans?
>>2846732
I've seen that those exist, and I've always kind of wanted to try one for exactly that reason. Seems like it might work decently as long as you can be sure that your camera will focus in the right place.
A RDS does seem kind of awkward with a camera form factor, though. It'd be interesting to try one with one of those camera shoulder stocks, as silly as I'd feel looking like some kind of ridiculous operator shooting at cars at some corner apex.
>>2846732
