I'd like to share some of my pictures, i don't usually make my own threads, however I think these are fairly interesting. also, this most recent work is the result of an extremely depressed mind, and i find these photos a little off putting honestly, like way empty and just sad. you guys ever see yourself more clearly through your photos than through your own mind?

Maybe that's just me but these doesn't work for me. IMO photographs like this need to look clean (unless they are done in a reportage manner). (Lazy edit to illustrate what I mean).

But to me it doesn't look like reportage.

There are just too many elements disturbing the geometry. Like the trees and power lines, that distracting shadow and those boxes.

>>2793301
Here the shadow just isn't straight enough and, how should I say, the elements not balanced. It doesn't work.

Overall I just don't understand what you were trying to show. I can neither see you documenting and neither trying to build pleasant compositions. Overall I think the framing is too narrow. With pretty boring elements like these you have to show more to make the photo interesting.

Again that's all just my opinion.

shadows still a bit distracting on the grass
the patched wall is a bit obvious (maybe because i'm looking for it}
but over all i really like what you've done with the mundane, its like the lack of something interesting is interesting
>>

>>2793487

thanks for the critique and meaningful input! Yall are right, u guys are what make this board great!
>>
>>2793522
I get nothing out of them when I look at them. No feeling, not wanting to look closely at the scene. Stuff like that. i spent maybe 10 seconds on each photo going "O, look. An empty wall." "Look, a fence." I have no reason to want to look at these photos ever again.
>>
>>2793522
Not him but when I call something a snapshot it's usually because it doesn't look like the photographer put any effort into it. He just walked around and snapped away with no consideration of composition, and barely one of subject.
I'm sorry, Vosh, but I have to agree with the guy that this is the impression I get from your photos here. It's pictures, not photographs.
There's nothing wrong with taking snapshots, by the way, I take lots myself. The issue is that too many people on /p/ don't know to sort the snaps from the photos so they post both. This is a photography board and it does actually say in the rules that photos you post should show at least some effort.
You will have to learn to be critical of your own work.
>>
>>2793539
the effort is in getting a reaction, and this is a slow burner but this guys getting there, these are deliberately crap, it seems to be a new thing on /p/, i saw someone last week do it brilliantly, this doesnt deserve the reaction its getting, even from me
>>
i enjoyed the set, OP. good work.
>>
>>2793539
I'm not sure if you're referring to the photos in this thread or my photos in general. I'm not the one who took the ones posted in here.. my latest stuff is in the RPT. But generally, I agree with you.
But (also referring to >>2793527 here) I enjoy looking at these kinds of shots as I like the calming sort of nothingness and the lack of meaning they convey. Nothing is screaming "I'm the one and only subject" and yet I keep looking at them and let my view wander around.. this is what >>2793527 describes. When you look at some instagram stuff or even here in the RPT, do you spend 10s looking at a single photo that is not appealing to you?
Actually, I don't believe that the photographer put no effort in these shots. You might imagine people taking shots like this mindlessly wandering around outside, randomly pointing a camera at something and releasing the shutter without a single thought.. this is not the case, but I can only speak for myself here.
>>
>>2793542
>these are deliberately crap

I don't think so. I can see what he might have thought but it just doesn't work. And that's okay. We are all learning here.
>>
really hope you didn't actually waste film on these, they look pretty vsco'y either way
>>
>>2793554
It's very obvious these are digital.
>>
>>2793539
>He just walked around and snapped away with no consideration of composition, and barely one of subject.

I disagree, it seems like OP actually put an effort into finding the subjects he wanted to take and took the picture the way he wanted his feelings to come across (desolate, mostly empty of any sign of human life).

That said though, I don't think he managed to get that across in most of those pictures
Especially >>2793300 >>2793301 >>2793312
>>2793318 aren't really doing it for me

Also kind of disagree that taking a picture without any effort put into it isn't worth posting
>>
>>2793547
I was referring mostly to the last few ones you've posted, yeah.
>>
>>2793565
>>He just walked around and snapped away with no consideration of composition, and barely one of subject.
I'm not talking about the photos in this thread when I say but defining what "snapshot" means to me.
I see some effort in these even if I don't think they're good.
>>
>>2793298
powerline, and tree in the back are actually really distracting, cant do much but move closer to the subject to get a more defined view

more defined framing, the angle it was taken is weird imo

picture lacking any definitive subject thus boring

I walk around in areas I like
>>
i am not a creative and not very artistic, but my wife is a professional wedding photographer and i have taken up an interest in photography after i bought her new equipment for her birthday a few years ago. so im not going to comment on my actual opinion of your photos, but if you are going to be taking photos of architecture and inanimate objects you should compose them better. i dont see much consistency in your photos other than a flat surface taken at a 45* angle.

>>2793306
in this photo fir instance, i would appreciate it much more if the supports of the fence were equally parallel with the edges of the picture.

>>2793308
and in this photo if you walked a little closer to the building or turned a little left so the top and bottom edge of the building ended right in the corners of the picture it would be much more consistent.

Really like your style OP. Suburban despair like this really fires my rockets. I like your use of creative angles as well. Australian Ricoh dude who had that thread about outback roadhouses was doing stuff like this as well except he had more of a objective, straight-on viewpoint. His instagram is @jackmcmaster87 if I remember correctly.
>>
>>2793932
it would be according to the rules you learned to apply to a photo.

>>2793927
ok, but why do you pick a certain part of that area? I mean you got 360°, but you pick only a little part of it... why?
You wrote it was more intuitive. Do you run around thinking that X or Y could look good or do you see/recognize something, approach it to a certain point, frame and compose your shot and take it?
>>
>>2793312
Of all the photos you've posted, this is the only one I don't really like. It doesn't quite have the same lonely/empty feeling the others have, and the composition doesn't seem as strong.

But for the others, I think they're all great OP. Reminds me of when I spent my college years in a boring ass part of the country.
They're cities by population but there's no art, no cuisine, no diversity, just the same bland mall stores and pizza and top 40 music and fat chicks wearing leggings and flip flops and a hoodie. The boringness is suffocating, and I feel that in these photos.
>>
These actually pretty fucking amazing.
>>
>>2793302
>>2793492
these are cool, rest are shit
>>
>>2793950

I think you are sort implying that I'm sticking to this routine compositional approach by mentioning "picking a certain part of that area". I see how these photos kind of all vibrate on the same astral plane, but the reason I shot the area the way I did was because of how I felt and how where I was felt. It's responsive. Why I picked the area? Idk, I'm drawn to simple palettes and sunny days. I strongly believe you would of reacted and shot it in a similar fashion, actually, Vosh. There's people in this thread giving me shit for posting boring photos - fuck yes they're boring. its boring shit im photographing. its nothing, im not printing these out and framing them, ffs.
>>
>>2794125

however, i do believe they warrant critique and i am always looking for feedback
>>
>>2793793
>>2793795
>>2793302
>>2793308
>>2793312

God damn OP, these in particular make me really feel the theme. These are things I would personally notice and maybe snapshit if I was walking somewhere alone. I can feel the loneliness my niggah

I dig it
>>
>>2794125
>>2794127
I said it already but I personally think the framing is too narrow. When you want to show how boring something looks I think you need to really show it in context. Because if you come close enough everything can be made to look boring.
>>
>>2794125
I wasn't implying that at all. I'm just curious why you take a photo of a certain corner of a building while you don't take one of a similar corner of a building nearby.. absolutely no judgement involved here and I already wrote I like the shots.
Don't care about "boring"..
>>
>>2793523
I give plenty of good advice to people in other threads. I'm just calling out this pretentious garbage because it has no redeeming value and there's nothing to even critique. Sorry if that hurts your hipster feelings.
>>
>>2794354
Pls, go away. You are shitting all this board. Google William Eggleston and shush.
>>
they are fucking shit

not even trolling, I could explain why but /p/ wont ever change. what you have posted or snapshits on film (/p/s favorite kind of photography) probably because they are only on the same fucking level and love 3deep5me bullshit

you have shown no skill in the craft nor any marketable skills, if you consider this relevant on an artistic level then fuck off over to /ic/ and stop being delusional.

The effort required to take these is NONE, shoot film and fucking point the camera at fucking nothing in auto mode

wowitsfuckingnothing.jpg

they dont make me feel depressed, they make me feel sad because this photography board is so fucking shit, /p/ has tricked itself into thinking that its harsh critique is better than praise on flickr, yet they are both mindnumbingly terrible

What you have posted is below the level of an incorrectly exposed poorly framed portrait shot by someone to improve in a craft

not some circlejerk shit show

my issue isnt even with OP, if he got enjoyment or even catharsis out of either the process or seeing the final result then to him these are a success

my issue is with faggoots like this >>2793311 fucking kill yourself

>Source: I have the most successful photographic studio in my city and I have morons sending me portfolios with utter shit in it

intothefuckingtrashitgoes.jpg
>>
>>2794360
Yeah, his photos all have a subject and interesting composition. OPs don't have any of that.
I admittedly like the more recent ones he posted though:
>>2793793
>>2793795
>>2793796
But the first ones were pure garbage with bad composition and no clear subject. You know, the same thing people complain about in the photos all the newfags post.
And the fact that he chooses his photos based on "vibrating on the same astral plane" proves that OP is an insufferable artsy faggot.
"You gotta like, look at what's NOT in the photo, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!"
>>
>>2794336
Haha sorry man I gave you probably the shittiest answer when I was drunk last night. I search for pleasing palettes. I don't shoot b&w, almost ever. The final product is hopefully a photo that looks good and uses that palette to make it even easier to look at.
>>
>>2794361

Damn. I don't think these are "relevant", the style I shot in is actually kind of worn out. It's not cutting edge shit but I like it. Idk bruh.

>>that source

You're a curator? Someone sends you portfolios for possible gallery showings? Or what? I can already say that you're not the type of person I'd sit down and have a beer with, especially after meeting curators from my own city
>>

>The effort required to take these is NONE, shoot film and fucking point the camera at fucking nothing in auto mode

Lol great post man.

OP good job. You've managed to post a coherent series, which is more than what 99.9% of posters will ever do for this board.

lmao this board.

also

dude wtf what are you trying to do?
>>
>>2794376
no problem. So you're more focused on contrasts and colors?

>>2794387
trying to understand how he chooses his subject.
>>
>>2794394

More focused as in more interested. My focus is to be better all-around (in terms of comp, subj, consistency, pp, etc) like everyone else, but i tend to find myself worrying about the juxtaposition of two colors rather than making sure edges are parallel and all these geometric nuances that I find make photography boring as fuck, like its arithmetic
>>
>>2794409
Is that why everything is shot from so far away at a diagonal angle? Every single one of these looks like you walked past the scene, stopped and thought "hmm, I should take a pic of that", turned around and snapped from where you were standing and then walked away.
>>
>>2794428
Nailed it man that's like exactly what happened
