B&W doesn't work very well for crazy visually busy scenes like these. In this case, most of the frame is a single tone of gray with little shadows so small and numerous that it basically just becomes visual noise. Waiting for better light, using color film, or cropping out all of the crazy visuals may have helped, but overall, it's not a very interesting or engaging scene.

Well generally it's pretty good advice to tailor your film choice to the shots you want to take, but if you have to, you can tailor your shots to the film you have available. Just know that there are certain scenes that won't work with what you're using. Look for less visually busy scenes, with more gradients of light and shadow. B&W is incredible, but not for every scene.
