This is may be regarded as a gear thread, although I see it as slightly more technical in nature: I've been using a canon 5D mk3 w/ MP-E 65mm in my setup and was wondering about trying the S or S-R, however I can't establish whether moire will be an issue as I couldn't find anyone on the other forums whose used either for insects. Does anyone have experience with the S-R?

I'm using a 5Dii and the mp-e 65mm. I've been looking at this as well and have been considering renting a 5Dsr to see if there is a serious issue with moire. If I recall correctly the fellows over at lensrentals (the kings of gear nerds) seem to think it won't be an issue. The real question is what does the MP-e resolve detail at. Yes you will end up with larger files to print from but with only marginally better detail if mpe doesnt resolve detail to that resolution. I suspect that it doesn't but this is just a gut feeling after having used the lens for so long. I also may be talking a bit out of my ass. Gearfagging isn't a specialty for me.

I hadn't actually considered the resolving power of the lens - I mostly use the images in A4 pdf's, so this would indeed seem pointless; I was just hoping the extra resolution could somewhat extend the magnification range of the lens when cropping.

On an unrelated note - have you considered using a stacking rail?

Focus stacking isn't particularly useful for mantises. They're fairly active with most species being quite obsessed with jumping on the lens or furiously wiggling their antennae or maxilla after each flash.

If greater magnification is your goal you could simply stack on extension tubes. Apparently the 1.4 teleconverter isn't horrendous on this and 'works' despite what canon says. I have a bellows laying around that I've been meaning stick on it for giggles but it isn't an auto bellows so to have a usable dof I would have preset the lens to a smaller aperture and go blind trying to see anything in the viewfinder.

lol sorry, I've gotten so used to shooting dead things I forget that most people shoot living specimens. Thankyou, I'll look into the teleconverter option.
