Anybody here who knows some tricks to stabilizing your camera without a tripod? Tomorrow I plan on taking some pictures in the city at night, but I don't want to carry my bulky tripod around. Also I'm stuck with portra 400 film for now.

...don't, it's a waste of film. 400 is way too slow for night. Generally though, you put it on things.

Portra 400 pushes to 1600 nicely

You can't push detail you didn't capture. It's nice over exposed, but shit shooting in the dark.

Make a string tripod! Spend $5 on some paracord and an eye bolt/nut from a hardware store.

There's a lot of variations on this, so do some internetting about it.

Do you know what pushing film means? I didn't tell him to shoot at 1600 and develop it normally.

It actually looks OK at 3200 but most labs I've found only offer up to 2 stops. If you are developing it yourself 3200 might be worth a shot

Yes I do, hence the "you can't push detail you didn't capture". Pushing can't create data and negative film isn't like digital where shadows are your friend for recovery.

OK cool. OP don't bother pushing, just shoot it at 400 at night, it won't make any difference apparently
>>

Rest it on your left shoulder, instead of your left hand.
If that is at all comfortable with your camera.

you have outdated information, friendo. the new(ish) portra is amazing when pushed.
