Hey /out/, i recently sold my car, and am now looking for a better /out/ing vehicle. I have about 5k that I can spend on it, and am currently looking for one that can handle dirt mountain and desert roads, as well as go innawoods for car camping and such. Pic related, I've been thinking about getting a 4runner. Do you guys think they're any good?
>>
4runners are coveted for a reason.

A First-Gen Jeep Grand Cherokee with the AMC 4.0L straight-6/Aisin AX-15 5-speed manual makes a great wheeling rig, innawoods rig, and general jack of all trades vehicle. Plus the AMC 4.0 is an absolute beast of an engine that will get you to hell and back without ever skipping a beaet. The only drawback I can think of right off the bat is that they're total pigs when it comes to fuel consumption (14mpg highway/9mpg city roughly), so make sure your trip to hell includes a lot of routes near gas stations. A decent ZJ generally runs for about $2,000, but you can find examples from around $200 for "rusty but runs and drives" example to ~4-5k for a semi-built example. Now of course prices may vary depending on your area, but here in California everything's just marginally cheaper because the floor pan/rocker panels don't rust out in approximately 15 seconds like they do back east for a rig like that. Final note being: If you look at jeeps, don't be afraid of a ZJ with the 4.0 with over 250k miles, those engines can last well over 3-500k with regular maintenance and replacement of the wear parts.
>>
Land Cruisers are super nice as well but for 5k a 4Runner is your best option imo. It's a solid platform for overlanding if that's something you're wanting to get into.

I thought since it's also been called 'hilux surf' it'd be on a hilux chassis but that's no longer the case.

I have a 2009 hilux and it's just an excellent car. At 205,000 on the odometer now and it feels basically new. So, I can generally recommend toyotas.

have a 81 Hilux 4x4 but dont take it camping out of fear it'll shit out on me being old/carb'd. usually take my 3/4 ton Chevy, 6.0 sucks on fuel but with an aux fuel tank ive been fine. goes everywhere, comfy, and being 6ft i can half comfortably sleep on the back seat if i dont want to set up my tent

What are some thoughts on the Bronco II?

I'm looking for something easier on gas but has 4wd not AWD. And I've had some good past experience with Rangers.

I'm also thinking about a Suzuki/Geo but the ride quality is a bit rough for daily use.

First car was a 1984 Bronco 2 with a 5-speed and 2.8L V6. Great car but the trans is kinda trashy. Also it's kinda smallish compared to the other cars you're looking at.

Really really, when it comes down to it, I'd say you should check out a lot of off-roading or general car enthusiast forums, they're generally extremely helpful and insightful.

Much like mine .... but you don't go buying a 3/4-ton+ pickup for its fuel economy.

But with 8k of shit behind the 7k truck, I can still see 10mpg ... considering a 3500lb car gets 30, mass moved per fuel burned per mile, they're fairly efficient.
There are days I want a diesel, but when I unhook the trailer and take the path less travelled I'm really glad I have what I do. 6.4L would be nice, but I don't feel like taking out a 2nd morgage for a new PW.

3rd gen 4runners are great, as are Tacomas of the same era. One major deciding factor is if you want a bed or not. I have a '99 4Runner limited. Pic related next to a river in Alaska.
>2WD, AWD, and 4WD hi/lo
>OE rear diff locker
>Small enough to park in city, but roomy enough for camping
>Can sleep in back in a pinch
>Flies down highway at 75 with quality AT tires getting 22 mpg
>Toyota reliability
>Decent sized aftermarket for off road stuff
>motherfuckin' roll down rear window

Downsides are paying Toyota tax, especially on the double cab Tacomas. It can get ridiculous. Nissan has cheaper alternatives. (Xterra/Frontier)

the only people who bought these things were middle aged men who worked at Wendy's when they where new. and often look like utter shit and need TONS of work, plus to make them worth dick, you need to do a small turbo diesel swap. replace all the suspension. and get a bigger drive axle.

they can be MADE good, and are good platforms for cheap. but unless you can weld/mod and have a machine shop near by, and about 5 grand in itself to drop into parts. they aren't worth it. explorers are better choices for outright car.
>>
>>751131
I've owned one of these pieces of shit. The motor is a butchery of Camry and Tacoma parts slapped together to make this lump of steel that is a total fucking aneurysm to work on.

If you do not get the 5-spd manual, the automatic will suck your wallet dry with its absolute shit gas mileage and poor gearing.

Volume wise, it's not as spacious as you'd think.

>>
>>751131
Go for the highlander. Nothing past 08 though.
>>
honestly subaru outback for 99% of people

pros:
good ground clearance
cheap as fuck
symmetrical awd
fuel efficient
big enough to lay a mattress in the back, 2 can sleep in it comfortably
reliable & well built
cruise control

cons:
head gaskets are expensive
wont handle extreme roads like literally rock crawling i guess

basically it's the best cheap road trip car if that's what you're going for. it won't off road like a truck or proper suv but it will get you down 99% of roads. but on pavement your trip is going to be a lot more comfortable and you'll save money+stop less and probably have a longer range between gas stations.

if you go on a lot of trips that are a bit of a drive to get to, outback all the way.
if you go on trips that are shorter drives but difficult to access, get a truck or suv.
>>
whatever u do though, if you go on long trips consider parts availability in your region. like a hilux would own bones but finding a part for it on the road if it breaks would be a nightmare where i live, whereas this place is literally bleeding dirt cheap ford toyota and subaru parts. ymmv so research your area.

I've got a little 2011 Ford Ranger too. It's bare bones, ex Orkin truck I believe. For a simple, 4 cylinder, no 4 wheel drive truck it works pretty good on and off road and gets great mileage. Just wish I had one of the v6 ones or anything with more power.

OP
Toyota tax is gonna make it hard for you to get a 4runner under 150k miles on it for that price.

The Montero/Montero sport is similar and under appreciated. You get a lot of suv for the money with those. Strong axles and can fit 32"/33" tires no lift.

Look for a used Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota or Toyota Tacoma.

The SUV Trail Blazer and Durango variants are also an option but IMO, a pick-up (with a cap) is more useful.

4X4 is nice to have but isn’t necessary unless you’re going off-road (i.e. OFF of the fire trails and two-tracks).

Been loving my TRD taco since I got it. Aftermarket is awesome for it, factory locker is convenient (although a tad fidgety), comradery between owners rivaling that of wranglers, powerful engines that's easy to maintain and ANY shop can rebuild, and half ways decent on gas. Biggest downside is the insane prices these things fetch. Pic related is mine earlier today getting saved by the locker after the rear driver side tire lifted off and the front open diff was just spinning.

Any experience with motorcycles? I was looking at something that would be about 50/50 on/off road, mainly trails, and wanted to know if a DRZ400S or a KLR650 would be the better bet.

KLR is more reliable, DRZ is better for offroad.
