What is /out/ recommended camera?

I'm a yuge fan of the Pentax DSLRs. They have ridick weather sealing on their entry-level models. Nobody else gives you weather sealing at that price. I have a K-50 and it gets poured on and I know I don't have to worry about it fucking up. It has a rugged polycarbonate body (over stainless inner chassis) as well which takes hits without denting, faking, or fatiguing. Even the kit lenses are weather sealed for dirt and water. Not it can't be submerged or anything, but you can legit drop it in the dirt and then take it in the shower to clean it off.

if I was looking for a purely /out/ camera I'd go Pentax too, but as I do a lot more varied shooting I chose Fuji X. I do however, lust after their weather sealed XF16mm and a weather sealed XPro2 for my /out/ usage.
IMO gaskets and rudimentary WR should be a standard for any lens that costs over 300
Best camera is what you're doing with it.
dSLRs have a distinct advantage in re to battery usage but CSCs have the form advantage. My Fuji XE2+Samyang12mm is a totsey package for my astrophotography compared to my old Nikon kit. Pic related is a shot with the 12mm

Looks like you've got an Australian camera, it doesn't work right in the northern hemisphere.
I live on Svalbard for a while and all I had was a Nikon d40. It is a pretty shit camera and did not like the cold, but it got the job done and I managed to bag a few decent snaps. Annoyingly, it is even more terrible in low light situations, which isn't ideal in a place that has no sun for 4 months of the year. It also made taking decent aurora photos nearly impossible.

Ive got a nikon d5100 that I picked up for 300$ I love it, heres a pic i took on my recent trip to Pennsylvania
I use the camera on my xperia z5. Does a pretty good job.

Dont be one of those dickheads who just set it to intelligent auto and use it like a point and shoot thinking your some artiste. Sure, you'll get some good shots but youre limited to what you can do and you may not get exactly what you want. I dont know about your specific camera settings, but learn how to adjust ISO, aperture and shutter speed and learn what each does. Just play around and get the hang.

j/k but set it to autofocus and turn the dial at the top to "P" and you can use it like a big point and shoot. when you're ready to start to learn how to take real photos read up on aperture and shutter speed. beyond that the only way to improve is to practice and google specific things you want to learn like long exposures, time lapse, hdr, etc.

I've had a Nikon D7000 for four years. Don't really need anything better, but high ISO performance isn't the best. I mostly use the 16-85mm, but I also have a Tamron 70-300 in my backpack in case I see any animals.

it is right next to a river, in the northeast...there was a lot more water a few days before
luckily it was perfect weather, but the temps keep swinging between 70s and 50s...supposed to get several days of rain so the level will certainly rise

Get a copy of the NatGeo Guide to Field Photography, it's probably one of the most comprehensive photo books I've read. Covers everything from DSLRs to smartphones

Nikon fag but honestly any APS-C frame camera over $300 is probably going to be alright. To me, it's less about the body and more about the lens, I pack a 24, 200, and 300mm lens to cover my needs. Don't forget to use a CPL filter. post processing cant remove your glare and highlights the same as a polarizer. With nikon cameras, anything with the nikkor brand is great. Took this last week.

Mirrorless cameras like that are great for day trips, because they're small and light and still have a decent size sensor, shoot RAW, and take different lenses. My Panasonic GF-2 barely weighs anything. But the battery life sucks if you're going somewhere you can't plug in the charger. You can bring extra batteries but that's more money and more hassle.
That reminds me... I was using mine today so I've gotta charge my battery.
Any thoughts on the Pentax K50?

its nice but i've always been wary of point and shoot small format cameras. i;ve never used olympus lenses but when you buy a camera brand you're basically locked to what lens mount that camera supports. So if you commit to olympus make sure their lenses are well made and check the AF times.
You want me to point to a camera for entry level, the nikon d3300 right now is unmatched for price. it's basically nikons top dx sensor but without some of the added unnecessary features on the more expensive Nikon bodies.
Compared to the olympus, its well worth the extra $100 bucks and more people sell bargain nikkor lenses then olympus.

Worth the money? How do you think the 18-55mm DA L lenses and 50-200mm lenses would work, do you think they'd be nice or would I have to upgrade?

It's no point and shoot. It shoots RAW, has interchangeable lenses and most of the features of a DSLR. The sensor is smaller than a DSLR (it's about quarter-frame) but much better than most P&Ses. it's Micro 4/3 so you can also use Panasonic lenses and there are adapters for a lot of popular SLR and rangefinder mounts so it's a pretty versatile system.
Like I said before, the main drawback of mirrorless for /out/ is that without an optical viewfinder, the battery doesn't last on multi day camping trips. I love it for day hikes, bike rides and street photography though because it weighs next to nothing and it's easier to keep out of harm's way than my D7100.

Canon Powershot SD1100. Small camera that takes great photos. This was a rainy, cloudy day in Alaska, so the brightness eas all weird with snow and clouds. I don't know much about ISO and f/stuff, but took some great pics! I also got an underwater housing for it for scuba and kayaking.
Seems like you can't go wrong with Canon.
