Looking for a wool shirt jacket for Spring/Fall weather. Something like this but it was just a Google image and can't find the brand. Where should I look?
>>
holy shit, OP from the last thread here, thought the last one was mostly hated despite the quantity of replies. noice.

>>724952
know what that jacket is? And can anyone recommend a base layer with the thumb holes/cuffs like this?

>>724960
I bought a couple of 'wool mix' shirts off asos. the fabric was super rough and prickly when i bought them but has softened up nicely. Totally fine over a baselayer, cheap and really warm.

Also my missus just bought a wool cape for £4 from a charity shop. It looks fucking amazing, 100% wool, super soft and thick. Jelly af.
>>
>>724960
reverse image search tells me these are pendleton. Which means great quality, but pricey. I want some of these too.

So im a total nub when it comes to outdoor fashion. Kinda hiking in general, but thats besides the point. I need examples of layers and temp ranges, anyone want to be awesome? Obviously its subjective to each person, but amuse me.
>>
>>725209
Just avoid cotton, and dress for what you expect the weather to be like at night when temperature is at it's coldest. You can always remove layers during the day.

Underwear should be wool. Synthetics like nylon or poly are nice but I always get swamp nuts wearing them cause they don't breathe as good. If it's cold weather, I will also wear wool long johns.

I wear a wool long sleeve shirt in colder weather and a nylon short sleeve shirt in warmer weather. In warm/mild weather I wear a wool jacket like >>724960 or a soft shell jacket if I'm expecting rain. in colder weather I will wear a thicker down jacket. Pants are always the same year round.

I personally love wool. My body doesn't breathe very well in synthetics.

I really like MASSIF stuff, its mainly military contract stuff but you can buy anything from their cite.

Form fitted, insanely soft, HEEUUG pockets and ton of them (2 on each arm as well) and even fire proof for when SHTF

I was thankfully issued a ton of this stuff and I can totally vouch for the brand.

Its expensive since it has fire retardant and crazy softness but if you want to look good, operator and be warm off your ass I high reccommend you check out their gear.

I wear this jacket and its mega comfortable inna. Its very expensive so I understand no one buying it. Their undergarments are reasonably affordable and they are also hypersoft and effective. I wore this shit for months on deployment and always felt blissfully comfy in it.

Nylon is nice.

The minus 33 merino wool bottoms are the comfiest i've ever had. They aren't cheap($50-60) but ive found that cheaper wool bottoms are scratchy and not as warm. Dont skimp, you will be glad you got these.

Dont bother with their top though, the neckline is super uncomfortable to me.

All of the G1000 stuff has a coating of G1000 wax, which is a heat setting wax that essentially melts into the fabric.
Works pretty well in repelling water and looks pretty good doing it, you can add more coats to different parts of the jacket and make it more waterproof, or more breathable. I have a special edition Greenland jacket, very nice.

Am I /out/ approved btw?

Honestly, I wouldn't substitute a hardshell for it. Those lighter coloured areas on the torso are just some stretch fabric. Great for breathability with a backpack on but not so good at repelling water. Ultra comfy/cosy when combined with the Keb fleece though.

I'don't be interested to get my hands on one of the economy shells they're producing now. Can't see it trumping my dead bird swag for practicality but I bet it'll look awesome.

The Fjallraven trousers I have are Barents, Nils and Karl Hydratic. One pair of each. I'm 6'8" so their 'raw length' is great for me.

the Hydratic is waterproof and breathable, but when I mentioned that in my previous post I was talking about my Gore Tex jacket. It's GoreTex Pro which is amazing.

Would this jacket actually keep you that warm? I thought dead air space was still a thing?
>>
>>725096
I have this. I ordered this for a base layer and it's kinda tight so maybe order one size up. But I like it none the less. The inside has a weird material. It's kind of like when you run your hand across the roof liner in a car. It kind of sticks to any loose skin on your hands. But you can't feel it when it's on.

I've been slowly moving my wardrobe away from a seperate /out/ and /city/ wear and towards clothes that fit both criteria. Seems like it would be better to have more a more simple, practical wardrobe.

At the moment I'm looking at getting a good fleece that can satisfy both - something practical and light for hiking trips but also something that I can wear around without looking like a middle age dad. Anybody have any suggestions? Not looking to break the bank too, considering its just a fucking fleece. I was thinking the Patagonia Snap T looks comfy af. But in Aus its hard to get non tacky colours and also no hand pockets is a draw back

>>728162
tbqh I hike in new balance 574s that I picked up for AUD50 on sale. cheap, light, sturdy, and comfortable. they've been great for spring through autumn hiking - i honestly wouldnt ever bother with hiking boots again I think. Maybe for winter hiking I guess.

wouldn't waxing make it a bit waterproof?

But what do i know.. i wear a jacket like this one, a Conquista Chamonix (something like pic related) and already feel good with myself.. maybe because i live in souther Brazil and our winters won't go below 3ºC in most of our cities so there's not much reason to have something beyonde that, maybe something more "social"..

As other anon said its a fairly loose fit which makes it quite nice circulation wise.

As it comes it's not super waterproof. What i've done is use some Nikwax wash in waterproofer which has helped quite a lot, it's still not completely waterproof, but it was never really meant to be. Its a good tough outer garment that stands up well to being roughed up over rocks and through nasty undergrowth. I've used it while scrambling, in the snow, in forests etc and I'm extremely happy for something that cost £40. Get a set and mess around with it!

>>
>>731877
It depends on what you are doing /out/side. If you are just walking around the farm, riding horses and getting aound they are okay but most arent waterproof. Day to day if you get a good pair they are comfy but forget hiking in them. Make sure you get some outdoors ones and not fashion ones. They also rake a while to break in usually and its worth spending the time making sure you get the perfect fit. Nothing worse than ill fitting western boots.

Maybe you misunderstand. I'm not saying everyone has really fucked up feet like that first picture, right?
I am asserting that no one who wears shoes as they grow has feet that develop naturally. Even people that wore properly sized shoes at all times.
Look at the second picture I posted. Does everyone have feet like that?
I would suggest that the "normal" foot is like the one on the right in this picture.
That foot is deformed. It's just not as bad as the pair in the first pic.

How do you like the Litespeed? I've been teetering on getting one for over a year but I just don't know if I could justify it. I don't know if it would offer much more functionality than my GR0. Or maybe I'm scared it will offer too much functionality over my GR0 and my GR0 will end up collecting dust. Which would make me sad because my GR0 has gone with me everywhere and I'm sentimental about it.
>>
>>736318
Honestly I really wanted a Goruck but I got the litespeed for $195 which is $100 less than a GR1 so I'm happy. It's a great pack, the back padding fits me perfectly though the contours of the straps don't really fit me (I have the old model, the new one has narrower, thicker straight straps). It has a TON of webbing on the outside and I don't really know what to do with it besides attaching an admin pouch but I don't know which one to get yet. The pack's beavertail (I believe TAD calls it a "transporter tail") is really useful, I'm always using it to carry a couple of water bottles or my jacket if I get too hot. It has a pair of mesh pockets inside that are a bit smaller than the GR0's but they're great for holding things like a scarf, gloves, a flashlight, batteries, socks, underwear, or maybe a first aid kit. I can't really speak for it's waterproofness because I've only been out in light rain with it.

Really if you love your GR0 then I I think you should stick with it, all the litespeed really has over it is the mesh back padding and the transporter tail.

beautiful classic design, world class quality, great ankle support etc, and modern tech like goretex membrane and vibram soles mean they're not just hipster bullshit, they're solid, decent boots.

Ranger Shirt reporting

feelsgood
>>
>>729405
I own the Skogsö as well and really like it. I did not buy it wanting it to be a completely waterproof jacket - I have a proshell for that. I found that whenever it was'nt raining I would much prefer not wearing gore-tex, but something like a woodsman-shirt instead. However with those I had to put on my gore-tex as soon as any rain was suspected.
To sum it up I have tried to bridge that gap. I love the comfort and breathability of the polycotton jacket, and still I dont have to bring out a rain jacket as soon as I feel a raindrop on my skin. I own Fjällräven pants as well and i'm slowly becoming quite good at aplying thier wax a way I like it. You can make the fabric pretty water resistant but never water proof. The way it is waxed right now, my jacket will keep light to medium rain out for about half an hour without it starting to soak through. But then again it dries pretty quick anyways. I also like playing around with where I apply the way, leaving some areas unwaxed for better breathability and other areas like shoulders heavily waxed.
>>
>>739587
Does it feel pretty light to wear? Looking for a decent all round jacket as i have a shell or poncho for rain. How long does the waxing last for usually?

what size did you get it in, mate?

From what i've heard and seen the bush shirt is more of an outer garment for cold weather and the ranger shirt is more of a spring/autumn and mid layer garment. how does it do in the rain?
>>
>>739565
I've got one. Two things about 'em:
*I MIGHT have sized up if I could try them on. It's plenty big but the hood doesn't come over my big head as much as I'd like. Possibly this would be different with a larger size? Probably not.
*You'll be warm and maybe not notice it until you take it off but they trap sweat like crazy. Cotton would be a bad idea under this.
>>
>>739664

Went with a Large. But then I was also able to get mine from a shop (Bushwear - Perth) so trying them on was an option. Did't try on the Bush Shirts or other stuff by them otherwise I'd have given you a rough idea of sizes and shit.

I'd probably agree with that, the Bush shirt does look quite smart if you wear it all tucked in like Uncle Ray does. I've been using it as an outer though. For work recently I normally have a merino base, a teeshirt and a heavy cotton work shirt so having it on loose on top of that instead of a fleece or something has been pretty effective. I often remove it and just wear it while we're sat around on breaks or sharpening saws and stuff.

For just a single layer of the material, in light rain/mist, it's kept me dry over the course of the working day. In actual downpours, as long as they go off again fairly quickly it's fine too. I've never gotten wet wearing mine.

You'll dig it, don't worry about the sizes too much.
>>
>>739609
I have a size medium which weighs 610 grams. The cut feels much like any other good quality softshell. The fabric of course does'nt stretch, but I am not restricted in it at all.
I'm normal to slim built and my arms are quite long and the medium size is fine for me. (I'm 187cm and weigh 73kg's) If you're heavier you should go for a larger size as the jacket is slim around the body.

As for the wax. I was in Norway for about a week this winter using fjallraven pants. I was a lot on my knees is the snow and after comming home I did want to reapply some wax to the knees, ass and at the very bottom of the legs. Other than that I think it last a long time.
Unlike DWR treatments I dont have to wash it into the whole garment, so it only takes me a few minutes to add some extra to certain areas using a hairdryer.

You should be filled with doubts. As far as looks go even that picture somewhat shows that it's a dumb neckbeard-ey jacket that you WILL get weird looks for. The outer material feels like burlap, and the fur liner is the furthest thing from soft it could possibly be. The jacket is VERY thick but doesn't even provide as much warmth as a light fleece layered under a softshell.

It's probably the worst piece of surplus clothing I've ever owned and I used to collect surplus.

What is this jack wolfskin hivemind you speak of? What did he mean by this?
>>

it's a German thing. Germans love functionality in things even if they never use or need it.

Around 2009 jack wolfskin gear became extremely popular and omnipresent.
Especially with rather inactive or older people that live in a sheltered city environment.

Now there is a store in every small town but the brand also changed their image to appeal more dynamic again.

Also, Jack Wolfskin products are actually kinda shitty. They're like Germany's North Face.
>>
>>743351

It's true that over in the UK, the majority of people who buy a Gore-Tex jacket, for example, will never use it outdoors. But then again people buy North Face Evolution Triclimate jackets by the ton so horses for courses...

But it's nice when you see someone in a bright jacket that's covered in patches and scratches and you know the guy wearing it has been somewhere cool and climbed/hiked in it for years and it's his companion.

Check the weather for this time of the year for the last 3 years.

get a poncho if:

>Heavy rain — when the precipitation rate is > 7.6 mm (0.30 in) per hour,[105] or between 10 mm (0.39 in) and 50 mm (2.0 in) per hour[106]
>Violent rain — when the precipitation rate is > 50 mm (2.0 in) per hour[106]

Don't trust the word of locals, as they are always used to the weather and will tend to underestimate.

Hope it helps.

It depends on how much it's going to cost abd if it is a place you wear out.

It's a /fa/ meme. Don't bother
>>

What, do you hike fully covered from head to tow in the summer? Maybe you should try shorts and a t-shirt. You know, like someone without brain defects?
>>
>>728542
That......does not look good. To me anyway.

I wear them for winter hiking, and in the summer if I'm going hiking somewhere especially muddy, but mostly its just in the snow.

Nothing worse than hiking in snow and having to stop every 30 feet and scoop snow out of your boots with your finger.

If you wear trail runners, they'd probably be helpful when doing scrambling so pebbles don't get in your shoe. The picutre looks like somewhere you'd get a lot of rocks in your shoes.

I'm looking for a pair of short shorts for summer hiking. Specifically, shorts with an inseam of 6" or below for men.

Topo mountain shorts are comfy and lightweight

>6" inseam

You want your balls to hang out?

go to a thrift store and buy some cheap running shorts. I've got some spaulding 6in shorts that are perf for hiking and cost me $2. Besides that, maybe look into Patagonia Baggies

how much did it set you back? looks p sweet but too /fa/ to wear /out/ - i'd be worried about ruining it
>>
>>753207
only AU$60 because eBay.

I only just googled it and realised it was waxed, is waxed good for outdoors? I know barbour coats are waxed but have never had one before
>>
>>753207
not wearing it /out/ is ruining it. /fa/ is a terrible place full of people who weigh 100 lbs worshipping 70 pound gender neutral asians with weird haircuts.

What I'm getting at is that in 6 months it won't be cool to wear anymore anyway so don't be scurred senpai
>>
>>753215
Ever handled a Drizabone? It's like that. An oldschool method of making waterproof gear that much of /out/ might poo-poo today for being heavy and not effective enough.

I think it does have some pros, though. It can take a beating and last a very long time. Though it will need re-applications of stuff occasionally.
