#37- "Snakehead Terror" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>754112

Glad I got out to the lake today despite being exhausted from work. Caught a couple sneks but got discouraged with how many young ones I saw. Gonna be time for some ultralight action and a Mepps #1 so I can get as many 8"-12" sneks possible.

I still need to catch a Peacock Bass.

If anybody has any more reccommendations for the "Combos Under $100" from the last thread, let me know. I was trying to pick combos that are generally sold at multiple retailers. Too bad Shimano doesn't do a Sienna combo. I would shill that hard.

Let's talk fishin'

>Combos Under $100
Top to bottom, left to right.
1) Abu Garcia Ike 2- $39
2) Quantum Bill Dance- $39
3) Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2- $49
4) Pflueger Trion- $59
5) Bass Pro Tourney Pro- $59
6) Lew's Laser Speed Spool- $59
7) Abu Garcia Cardinal SX- $69
8) Daiwa Revros- $69
9) Mitchell 300- $69
10) Pflueger President- $79
11) Shimano Sedona/Sellus- $89
12) Mitchell 300 Pro- $89
13) Abu Garcia Orra S- $99

Open to suggestions as always. I don't think Mitchell gets enough love sometimes. I had an old Mitchell combo that I gave to my bro, has to be 15 years old and still works great. One day I might grab one of those green 300 combos, they look nice.

I made this stupid thing. Lol, it has a pretty sick wobbling action though. Stays topwater and leaves a nice little wake.

Supposed to imitate a baby duck. I made it out of a broom handle, model car paint, and spare hardware.
>>
>>755758
Have you caught anything with it?
>>
>>755627
not sure where you live OP, but shimano does do a sienna combo where I live. they combine it with a shimano sonic pro rod. I have this combo and i use it mainly for bass. Best part it only put me back ~$80.
>>
>>755765

I made it during the winter so i haven't had a legitimate chance to use it yet. Still waiting on topwater season to heat up but i will defintely give it a shot.
>>
>>755775
I might copy your design and give it a go

I haven't had success fishing top water yet either (although my buddy pulled in a gigantic largemouth with a broke back rapala) but Texas rigged creature baits have been pulling in some monsters for me so far

Might have more to do with where I'm fishing than anything else

She's back! Completely disassembled my Quantum SX2 spinning reel, found the cracked anti-reverse ratchet, epoxied it back together, cleaned every part and filled the reel with grease and somehow figured out how to put it back together.

If you have an old spinning reel like this taking it apart to clean and lube is a fun project. Can't believe I've never done it til now.

Where did you buy it? None of the major retailers in the US seem to sell Shimano combos besides Dick's with the Sedona.>>755775
>>
>>755803
I took apart all my reels and cleaned n oiled them like a month ago. Dropped one of the million spacers from my President LE and it took me half an hour to find it.

The do run nice tho after packing the bottom where the gears are with grease.

This is also a testament to why you should buy from reputable brands. I had no problem finding the schematics for the reel and would've been able to order the part online had I lost it for good.
>>
So pike season started again last sunday.
went out to see if i could get one.
no luck tho, but that just means that i have to air the rod more.

wondering if i should give some spinners a try instead of the wobblers.

Heres another plug i made using a super cheap store bought needlefish. I sandes off the finish and painted it to imitate a squid. I also added lead solder to the belly in a few points to make it neutral buoyant.

Im gonna try to use it with a sinker for doormat fluke. No idea if its gonna work or not. I wanna try some weird shit for big fluke this year. Needlefish, inline spinner teasers, homemade teasers and 6" rubber squids are all on my list. Im gonna stick the experimental rod in a rod holder while i jig a bucktail. May 17th cant come quick enough...haha.

Heres a teaser i made out of an octupus hook and craft feathers. I used two 16th oz bullet weights for bass glued together as the eyes. The feathers made it float upwards and the weights keep it pointed down. Kinda interesting. Ive gotten some real fly eyes since then haha.

For early season striper pack various bucktails from 3/4oz to 1 1/2oz. Use a trailer like porkrind or gulp. Glide it slowly near the bottom for best results. Also bring some storm or tsunami shads. 4" is a good size for early stripers. Youd also be foolish not to carry some smaller pencil poppers.

Its still a little early, im expecting things to get really good within a week or two here. I havent been able to get out and explore much lately though cause of work and rain and such.

Make sure fluke are in season in rhode island when you get there. We open on may 17th for fluke. Those gulp tipped bucktails do work on fluke though.
>>

ive got a 1 oz bucktail, have a 1/2 oz one coming g in the mail soon ,
have some gulp coming in the mail aswell, and also have 4 inch swimbaits il be using, what im lacking is true saltwater rod and reel, 7 ft bass rod will be all i have though that can handle 1 oz ( just barley)

>>756060

Use braided line if possible. 20-30#. Watch your drag if you get into a larger striper. No promises a freshwater rod will come out alive if you get into a 20+ pound bass haha. Size 3000 or 35 reel minimum. 4000+ is better. Rinse your reel with gentle warm water when you're done to prevent corrosion. Also, you run a pretty good chance of losing those bucktails to the rocks on the bottom so just be ready for that, maybe grab some back ups if possible.

As for spots, i cant really speak on specifics in ct and ri, but look for current and structure. Read the waves, look for sandbars, gaps in the sandbars, underwater boulders etc...large bass use heavy current to ambush the stupid baitfish that cant swim in it.

My ultimate advice: go to youtube and type in "john skinner" lol. He will learn you better than i ever could.
>>
Will my finger get cut in casting with a spinning set up if I'm just throwing sub 1 oz lures?

Putting electrical tape on my finger mess up some of my cast because I can't feel the line well and it slip out during cast.
>>
>>756078
im going to be running light 12-20 lb though il have my 7 ft heavy boat rod with 50 l b braid, that has handled some large fish,

>>756080

Use medical tape. If your hands get wet and soft over time, braid can defintely cut ya.

12-20 should be fine, just keep an eye on your drag. Tight enough to set the hook, but light enough to let anything big run. Be ready to adjust on the fly too.

I use 40# braid on my surf rods. We'll see how it holds up this season
>>
>>756102
>let anything big run
That kinda fucked me up on the monster I had hooked twice last week. First time was #10lb braid which the thing would've broken if I didn't tire him out good, but second time when I had him on for a couple minutes, I should've tightened up real quick. All hope may have been lost that time though since he ran out so much line as soon as I set the hook. Provably woulda caught up the line either way.

>>
>>756132
Basically what skid said.

First time was on a Blue Fox and fish ran it into some snag almost immediately. Second was on a Texas rig. Set the hook and he ran out like 30yds of line. Then I started fighting with him and was making a little progress. After maybe 2min, he wrapped me around something real solid underwater and I was done.

I'm guessing it was a 10lb+ snakehead. I have never had anything fight even close to that hard. 5lb largemouth fight good, but won't rip 30yds of #15 braid in a couple seconds. 10lb carp dob't run like that either. This was also the lake where dude recently pulled out a 47" 14lb snakehead.

>>756134
Not really a small pond. Not huge but I would consider it a lake. Odd shaped but probably 1.5mi across total.
>>
>>756143

I use 20# for all ny bottom fishing, and 50# for striper fishing. Dudes use mostly 80# mono for striper out here nowadays. Pretty crazy lol
>>
>>756138
Just doing mono?

Arbor knot to the spool, keep some tension on the line while spooling, stop when you have ~1/8" of spool left. Shouldn't take more than a couple minutes.

I'd start on a cheaper rod
Because you have to buy every rod knowing you very well may break it
Thats what I do with everything because I break everything- nice or cheap

I fell on it walking through somebwoods looking for squirrel
Bent barrel

The trigger didn't reset any more
Broke all the sights
Including the ×4 scope
Was easier to replace than fix

If you really want to spend $200 on a combo, spend like $130 on a reel and $70 on a rod. But youcan get something decent for a bit less.

I haven't been able to catch fish for shit lately. Today I was getting solid bites every 4 cast or so. My rod almost went in the water lol.

Maybe it's because I'm used to using braid and I'm using mono, so I'm not setting the hook hard enough? Or it's not bass, but sunfish or drum. Or maybe I've just been off lately. Pls halp.

What lure is it? With spoons and cranks you shouldn't wait as long to set the hook as for soft plastics due to the hook position and lack of natural feel. They're more likely to spit the bait early (just my personal theory)

perfect size for brackish striper, or tarpon, redfish, etc.

with a 4k it makes a good salmon rod, with 6k a strong inshore rig

perfect for buck-tailing a canal or river

i already have a boat rod with a fierce 5000 that id be fine to swap over to a different rod based off situation , but im not sure what my best bet would be, fishing the ct and thames rivers from shore etc, i dont think i want something rediculously long, but mabye a 9 or 10 foot rod for throwing lures and shit from shore, Any suggestions, i have heard positie things about the diawa sealine surf rods

What mainebub said, st croix triumph man. Its worth it. Tsunami makes a really nice surf rod too. The airwave is sick and they have a few cheaper ones as well. Penn also has a few good surf rods, my battalion is pretty decent.

The only real choice for cheap is really ugly stik. But they are heavy and will wear you out way faster than a nicer rod. And ive never used an ugly surf rod, but they arent known for being super sensitive. Get on Craigslist. You're bound to find something for cheap.

As for length. 9-10' should be good. Look for a medium or medium heavy rating. Something that will throw 1-3oz should cover just about everything. Maybe 1-4oz.

If im strictly catch and release is it worth getting lures and swapping out the treble hooks? i've pretty much exclusively used livebaits

Swapping the trebles for what?

You could always just crush the barbs.
>>

J hooks, circle hooks, something else, i hate treble hooks, they shred fish and im bad at taking them out
>>

You could if you want, but normally the barbs are the problem, not the treble. You just have to be smart about taking them out.

Use some pliers or whatever and crush the barbs down on a couple lures before you start replacing hooks. See if that helps.

Almost all of them have been on Mepps or Blue Foxes. The big guy was on a regular spinnerbait, and I caught one on a little underspin with a Gulp minnow and one on a texas rigged worm.

If you choose to swap out for a single hook that is not a spinner bait, try to look for those inline hooks that have the eye orientated 45 degree compared to normal hooks. You can put those directly on the split rings and they will face the right way on the lure. This is particularly important for lures heavily relied on lateral balance.

naw, something like this. Vmc, owner, and mustad have these kinds of hooks. I only managed to find owner ones at the retail tackle place near me.

I goes for single hook for these lures since i want a bit of extra strength on the hooks and strength per weight, single hook is stronger than treble. I don't want to replace with heavier treble since they might mess up with the action of the lures. Also, I like fast action rod and also is using braid, so I feel that single hooks would be better

So far, I haven't gotten chance to try them out yet though.
>>
>>757236
Oh, wow. They are made specifically to replace trebles, that's interesting. And I see what you mean now, the eyelet is turned 90* from where it would normally be.

Are those Shadow Raps? I bought one or two of the other Shadows with 2 hooks but I don't think I have used them yet. Getting warm and the bass haven't been hitting cranks and spinners so much, they like the Texas rigged stuff instead.

>>
>>757240
How did you snap it? You're just supposed to clamp down on the barb.

And I would reccommend getting hooks like posted here >>757236, those hooks you have could fuck with crankbaits. Either throw them off balance or just make you lose a lot of fish.
>>
>>757244
idk i just clamped and it broke. Only one of them though out of the 12 i did.

I can just rotate the eyelet 90 degrees with pliers though, no need to buy special hooks with the eyelet facing sideways
>>

image.jpg
3 MB, 3264x2448
>>757251
>rotate the eyelet 90deg
If you snapped a treble trying to push down the barbs, good luck trying to twist the eyelet without breaking it off. If you manage to do it, the hook will probably be incredibly weak.

I still think you should try the trebles with the barbs crushed first. It isn't that hard to get trebles out even with the barbs. Just grab the shank of the hook with some pliers and bush straight back.

Pic related is GOAT too. But I have never needed them yet, always manage to get it done with a Leatherman or regular needlenose pliers.
>>
>>757251
If you can rotates it without damaging the hook then that would work. I think using heat helps. I would use the best octopus hooks you have since they don't have a shit load of barbs that make it more difficult for you. Those eagle claw baitholder rust really fast btw so I wouldn't use them for lures.

Use an octopus hook about a 4-5 size higher than the treble size. There are conversion chart online somewhere that you can find. You want to match the hook weight as close as possible to the treble replaced so there would be no difference in lure action

Also, to pinch down barbs on smaller hooks, I use a nail clipper and just clip the barb tip down. You just beed to pointy tip of the barb to curve downward and that would make a huge difference in removing hooks from fish. You don't have to use a lot of force
>>
>>757182
That would be a final product. This is a test run.
>>

So, new angler here. I went out and bought a few fishing rods off a buddy of mine and started fishing with them, he threw in his "Fishing starter pack" and it had a bunch of pic related in it. Ive had absolutly no luck with them. But I see them all over the place so im obviously using them wrong. Any tips? Or should I just throw them away and keep using other things that ive been more successful with?

Hell for that matter, mayonaise will get pine sap and oil off of the hands. Bottom line is my hands got dirty because I live in the back woods and hard work aint always clean.
>>
>>757834
totally understandable, working on bikes, cars etc is dirty work,
i just try to keep my hands clean,
Shit , back when i was working at the hatchery my hands amost always were coated in fish slime
>>
>>757833
Yeah dude. IDK wish I recorded more, didn't really want to emphasize it si CE it doesn't really fit with my channel.

Oh well, thanks though I'm somewhat pleased how it turned out.

And for anyone else that wants the shitshow of haphazardly put together video from CO here it is.

http://youtu.be/olCsIFdbYeg

Few things, it isn't just fishing, there is music but very minimal, Very little information is portrayed. Got too lazy while sorting through to do any real editing.

Good time, fishing in CO is hard. The fish are smart and you have to use very very light tackle. It is nice to see North East fishing tactics work in that region.

Good times though, will be going back again in the future.

>imblyign any of our hands are clean

I'm not a fan of fish slime tho, especially since the flies and gnats will be all over it. If I can't lip a fish, I will use a rag and I have wet wipes in my bag.
>>
>>757827
Bluegill and maybe crappie will take those if you just jig them around a pier or dock. I never used them much, aleays had better luck with a beetle spin or just jighead and curly tail grubs.
>>

>rag and wipes

That's how you kill trout and other species that rely on the bacteria and slime on their bodies to survive.

Just promise me if you catch trout and you don't intend on keeping it, you wet your hands and bare handle the fish

Noice.

How warm is the water? Were you just fly fishing?

I have been suprised lately after expanding my lure choice and techniques. Last year when it started to get warm like this, I had a lot of days when I wouldn't catch shit. Now that I'm running more soft plastics as well as topwaters at certain times, I can normally get something even if they aren't biting cranks.

How is the newfound freefom of walking on water like Jebus with the waders?
>>
>>757556
Never seen it like that. I just chop the heads off instead of being a dick and letting them suffer.
>>
>>757890
The water is in the low 50s (53 is what I heard) and no one's had good luck in weeks near me (everyone I run into has the same story- even the panfish are being tough)
I was doing everything today
The only bite I got was on fly and I think it was a pike or something else toothy because I had him on for 3 seconds before the line broke just above thy fly and my line hit me in the face

Also the waders are fun

>Implying any animal is conscious for more than a few seconds after blood pressure drops that much that suddenly
Those fish were fucked harder than a deer with a heart shot from a bow

Tl; Dr: the fish didn't even know they were suffering within a few seconds

New Revos are making a debut on the JDM scene.
