#35- "The One That Got Away" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>748842

Still contemplating committing sudoku after losing whatever it was that ran two of my lures into the weeds today. Need to get on some fresh Blue Foxes now but nowhere near me carries much of a selection.

HatcheryAnon says CT waters are hot for them pickles and pre-spawn bass, Mainebub coming through with the Colorado fishing report tomorrow. Texas anon will have that rod and reel chart one day I hope.

Question from end of last thread- does anybody use those Zoom (or similar soft plastic company) frogs? If so, any success? How do you rig them? I'm thinking they may be worth trying for snakeheads but the only frogs I ever run are the typical weedless ones and I haven't had much luck.
>>

actually fish were finickey af today, only 10 fish over 3-4 hours of fishing
yesterday i got 13 plus a bunch of missed fish (10+)
i think it was because it got cold af last night

Question for my fellow braid users- when doing a leader strictly for visibility purposes, how long do you normally go?

I do ~3' most of the time. This rod has 10lb moss green on it anyway, I really should be tying a leader to the one with 15lb red line.

Fishing Forecast: April 28, 2016
It's a bluefish bonanza going on in New Jersey! Shops across the region are reporting numerous catches with some fish weighing into the high teens.

Long Island anglers are finding the local waters full of bait. The predators are hungry and following their prey; stripers, bluefish, and even weakfish are being caught in the shallows.

Farther north in New England, Rhode Island's tautog bite is heating up and the light-tackle striped bass action has picked up in the Connecticut tidal rivers. In Massachusetts, schoolie stripers have made it all the way up to the North Shore!

12-24 inches, or 10+ft of mono as a shock leader type dealing
i just dont like casting through eyelets since i use improved albright and its not the smoothest

Got a care package today
The flies I got from bub came in and my dad got me a frog after losing one of my other lures
It was a rat-l-trap but I never had luck on it

On to Bubs flies
They seem nice but they are fruity lol
I was expecting just black and white
But I can't complain, I bet the fish will hit them just fine

Here are the flies all spread out
I might try the green big ones for bass- I heard they've been liking green lately
>>
>>751333
Checked. Those flies got to you pretty quick. Nice lil tackle box and everything too.

I've never used frogs quite like that either. The ones I have always have the stringy deals to replicate the legs like it's swimming. I wonder if that Lunkerhunt will be better in certain situations since it looks like it's sitting still.

>>751331
Idk, I do the uni-uni and I can tie them pretty smooth so I barely feel a 3'+ leader even if the knot does go through the top couple guides.

The one I just tied is 8lb flouro on 10lb braid. But I have another 20lb spool of flouro that I use a lot with 15lb-30lb braid. Casting is smooth since the knots are small and the tag from the braid knot frays right away. But reeling in the 20lb flouro leaders, the tag from the flouro knot likes to get hung up sometimes since it is so stiff. I just try to cut them real short. I have even tried putting a tiny dab of super glue to hold down the flouro tag but it wears off pretty fast and isn't worth the trouble.

And the last thing I need to do is drive to the Bass Pro Shops an hour away

You mentioned the zoom frogs in the last thread. Yeah they work, they're like a completely weedless buzzbait. Just reel them slow over literally whatever you want and stuff will come up and check them out.

This guy right here is literally exactly who you should be watching. He fishes all the same stuff you could in all the same places.

Walmarts near me only carry a couple Rooster Tails and maybe one small Panther Marlin. Dick's carries like 5 Rooster Tails and 3 Mepps. Gander Mtn didn't have shit for inline spinners. And one Bass Pro carries maybe a dozen Mepps and a handful of Rooster Tails, while the other Bass Pro has no Mepps but some Blue Foxes.

I'm probably just gonna order some online. I like some of those UV ones they sell. I looked on eBay to see if they had a nice set for cheap but too much shit to dig through.

I like that girl aside from that mild Down's smile.

Pickerels are defintely hot on long island as well. Bass are still being picky though.
No stripers in my neck of the woods yet. Maybe about an hour west near brooklyn.

Today i got to fly a drone, and finally got the spinfisher wet lol. The combo i put together is perfect for surf fishing. Plenty light, hurls light lures with ease. I cant wait for it to heat up here.

It has a bail. Considering getting a cheaper bail less to learn though. Surfcaster Journals youtube has a great video on using them. seems straightforward enough.

And on an un-fishing-related note, here is a video i made of some drone footage i took. Nothing super interesting, just getting the feel for it. Taking video from 150ft high is pretty sick though haha. Looking to use this in future youtube fishing vids.

Question for the experienced braidfags, other than slightly shorter cast distance, are there any drawbacks to using mono with a rod that has really narrow guides?

I'm pretty sure this is a monofilament lead. I'm a fucking noob. Where do I attach the hook if I want to use it for a lead? I can't tie it on wouldn't that defeat the purpose of using a lead? Only know the basics.
>>
>>751520
Attach the hook to that snap swivel
>>

>>
>>751525
Yes or attach a small wire leader from there
>>
>>751532
Okay thanks anon. Didn't want to look like a retard when I go fishing this weekend.
>>
>>751534
I tie all my hooks. Only use swivels for sinkers or lures.
But i guess you can do that too, if you arent fishing for overly careful fish.
>>
>>751534
You'll be all good friend

Catch some big ones
>>
>>751536
When I do fish I mostly go after cat fish. But someone gave me this monofilament lead and said I'll have better luck. But I've always just used a simple sinker and hook set up when I would fish in the Ohio river.
>>
>>751539
I think i remember reading catfish are poor sighted, but rely on smell and feel. If thats correct, you will have no issue with the rig you got.

What kind of hooks you use?
>Circle/Octopus hooks a best
>>
>>751548
Actually I was just about to set it up with some octopus hooks.
>>
Should I use a swivel with a spinnerbait or just attach it directly to the main line?
>>
>>751508
No where near as much sensitivity, and I hate mono for when I'm running a lure along the bottom. I always seem to get stuck more with it.
>>
>>751344
>Blue Foxes
I can get BF's at a crappy little store called Benny's
They're chain but I'm not sure how large and too lazy to look. They're fishing gear is always at least 25% less than anyone else.
>>
>>751589
I know that, i meant in terms of tangles and shit.
Rods made for mono have wide bottom guides, while rods made for braid have thin thin narrow guides afaik
>>
>>751596
Oh I'm dumb. Just woke up lol.

I don't know about rods made specifically for braid. I've used microguide rods with mono though and haven't had a problem. I having seen any spinning rods that don't have a couple wide guides towards the bottom.
>>
>>751614
I have seen spinning combos with micro guides and it seems like a retarded idea. The Skeet Reese combos for ~$100 that always go on sale at Dick's are like that.
>>
>>751626
That seems like a terrible idea. The only spinning rod I have with microguides still has a few normal size guides towards the bottom then the micro guides
>>
>>751630
Exactly. But those Skeet Reese ones have like 1/4" guides on the very bottom. Not sure why they would do that. It has to cast like shit.
>>
>>751686
Probably why they're always on sale

>>
I go fishing every day but can barely catch a bass. Can someone tell me how to catch a bass? I use a white spinners bait and sometimes a carolina worm, drop it to the bottom then reel slowly.
>>
>>751747
I catch them by leaving a worm on a hook and letting it float till I get a bite.
>>
>>751750
I see other fishermen throwing out big waggle worms (i think plastic shads) and other fishy looking ones then reeling them fast, and they pull in big bass non stop. I try it and dont catch a thing.
>>
>>751754
It's technique and luck. I would try for 2 hours and nothing. Then a bite.
>>
>>751539
I use a 100 pound test braided line leader for cats

At all
I once caught a cat in The following way
>20 pound main line
>50 pound shock leader

>Snell 5/0 circle hook on shock leader

The sinker was literally 1/4 of an inch away from the hook and a channel cat still cane after it

An 18.5 inch halibut managed to break one of the treble on my shadow rap. It probably broke while the halibut was fighting in water and hit it on pebles in the sand or was flopping in the sand onshore. I don't think it actually hook onto the halibut since I rarely get strike on the front hook. That poor halibut did get the middle treble foul hook onto its head though. I think the halibut managed to shake off the lure from the mouth, but then get rehooked again from the outside.

I challenge you with this unweighed fatty we caught recently. If i had to guess i would've said between 4 and 5 pounds, picture hardly does it justice. I could fit all four fingers along its bottom lip no problem.

For long island, its a pretty rare fish lol.
>>
>>752215
You or the fish?
>>
>>752124
It's rural as fuck, but it's a well pressured spot, the fish here are very smart. We are fishing 5x leader with 6x tippet. It's extremely tedious to fight a large fish with such light line. But they are extremely hard to deceive, and are very, very line shy. Pretty much fishing this spot for 2 more days. In Maine we typically use 3x leader and 4x tippet because our fish aren't line shy, so adjusting to lighter line has been a bit of a challenge.

The biggest fish we caught today 23"+ was fished with our smallest nymph, a #25 zebra midge. We also hit a few on the midge hatch, so getting a few browns on the dry was a treat.

Hoping to hit a few more spots on the Taylor, than heading south to the forks, and finishing north in the East river, where there is a healthy, extremely fiesty brown population.

Ever catch any exotic or invasive species?
>>
>>752308
Look for ponds in suburban neighborhoods. I fished one absolutely piss drunk at 5 am last weekend and still managed a couple fish. Hilarious.

I was putting together my travel rod in the parking lot next to this party and people were like
>r u fishing rn??
>duh
Walk to pond, catch bass, walk back into party with bass. Hilarity ensued.
>>
>>752320
Just carp. I don't think there's many exotics in north Texas, and carp is the most prevalent invasive species.

I hate carp. I wish there was some way to kill off carp populations without killing the other fish.
>>
>>752327
Heh, yeah I've been trying too. Right now the water is so high most of the ponds are in peoples back yards, so I haven't really been able to fish them. What I really need to do is stop being lazy and take the kayak out.

I too have gone fishing drunk and at parties. People either think it's great or I'm weird. Haters gon hate. Also, watching a hammered girl trying to cast a memecaster is pretty funny... Until I have to fix the birds nest

Sometimes, but I have better luck fishing the lakes connected to the canals than the canals themselves. If you do the canals, you gotta find some structure.

Where are you visiting? The snakeheads are limited to a fairly small area. And the peacocks are only found really far south. Sailfin cats are all over as well as some South American cichlids.

>>752367
Eh, a couple more. I get a lot more largemouth than snakehead. I was actually driving past a lake yesterday that is right off that C-14 canal where the sneks originated and I'm thinking about trying it out today.

Think I recommended those frogs/toads to Pepsi last thread. A lot of folks seem to like them for snakehead. Most solid body soft plastic frogs I've seen rig weedless with a typical EWG worm hook. I haven't tried using them yet but I've always had luck with Zoom's other baits, especially their spinnerbait trailers.

>>751836
I only recently picked up a scale but I'd estimate my largest largemouth was at least 6.75#. That was out of Snyders on Raystown Lake. On the bottom end of the lake at Weaver Falls I had something snap 12# fluoro like it was a cobweb. No jumping and took off like a rocket so I figure it was a double digit striper, muskie or pike. That lake has fish that can easily scoff at my bass tackle.

Slept through my alarm clock this morning. Gonna be getting a late start somewhere. Probably Mallows again or maybe the Mattawoman Creek. Still a cold spell here. Gonna finish checking local reports, tide tables, and head out just as soon as this woodpecker leaves my feeder (don't wanna scare him off). Wish me luck.

So ive fished with medium/heavy tackle my whole life and ive been wanting to give light tackle a try

I got a light rod yesterday and im looking for a recommendation for a good light spinning reel for 2-6lb test preferably under $100

what do you guys think?
>>
It's nice and cloudy today, I think I'll go do some fishing this afternoon. Though I can't seem to find any decent lakes for shore fishing around me. I've been trying a few for the past couple of weeks and have only caught small fish with a rooster tail (bluegill, one tiny channel cat, and one tiny bass). My problem is probably that I can't find any good structure to fish around. Gonna stop at bass pro and pick up some inline spinners, maybe I'll have some luck with those.

I couldn't even tell what that was at first. Just realized it's a snap swivel attached to a flouro leader with a surgeon's knot. I don't think that tag is as long as it looks.

>>752544
Go for it. 4lb-6lb mono is nice because you can cast 1/8oz lures easily and still handle most bass. Just look for something around a "2000" size. Sizes vary by brand a bit though so look at the line ratings and I would go for something that will hold 150yds-180yds of 4lb-6lb. It could be a 1500 size Shimano or 25 size Abu.

That is my favorite size for pond and lake fishing. Not quite ultralight, but not as large as a regular 3000-3500 medium reel. I like running 10lb braid on them. Very versitile.

As far as <$100, you have a ton of selections. I would check out the Shimano Symetre. Maybe an Abu Garcia Orra SX? My Pflueger President LE is close to the size you are looking for too and that was $80.

do you think a 2500 size shimano would be too large for 4lb test?

cause ive been looking at the siennas but they dont have a 1500, just 1000 then 2500
>>
>>752595
Size 2500 and 3000 shimano are exactly the same size and weight. 3000 just have a deeper spool for more line.
>>
>>752595
and size 2500 would be a bit too big for 4 lb test. I think 1000 would be perfect for 4 lb test if that is the test line you want want to run.
>>
Well I forgot my fake maggots. I was hoping to go to a little cove and slam some gills but now I can't.
Its also wayyyy too cold for frog's so that's an issue too
And cold rain so cold water
What do?
Cold air and water, overcast, not too much wind but enough to ripple the water
>>
>>752577
Looks somewhat like horse mackerel, except the dots.
>>
>>752595
Look at the line ratings.

>>752600
I think the Shimano 1000 size reels are nice for 4lb. It's hard to tell without seeing them though. My Okuma 25 is a little but larger than most 1000 size reels, but you probably wouldn't want to go heavier than 6lb mono on it. And my Pflueger is almost the same size, maybe a tiny bigger and that one is a 30 or 35, you would run 4lb-8lb on that. And that
35 is smaller than my Abu 30, which is about average medium weight 6lb-10lb.

So check them out in store and look at line ratings.

Also, wut kind of rod? And you think about running braid at all? 4lb mono is nice and flexible as long as you can deal with losing lures almost every time you snag a lilly.
>>
>>752595
There's really nothing between? What is the 2500 like? That might be nice for 6lb, a good medium-light combo. Otherwise 1000 with 4lb.

I don't know the Shimano sizes too well since my only Shimano is a 500 and it's really light. I have 6lb braid in it with a 5'6" Ugly Stik. Still fun for small bass and big bluegill or Mayans though.
>>
>>751314
How do I get good at fishing? I've been out fishing like at least 10 times for a good couple hours and I haven't caught anything cause I suck. Maybe I'm not going to the right places either. I'm in Southeast PA
>>
>>752617
What are you fishing with? Gotta find good lakes, good spots in those lakes, the right bait/lure, the right weather (somewhat), and be a little lucky at the same time.
>>
>>752617
Dont get discouraged.

>>
>>752215

So is there substantial difference between 2 pc and 1 pc rod?

2 pc rod has a lot of bad reputation but I wonder if they are that bad, especially on a decent $100 rod
>>
>>752639
2pc rods on a bad rep? what?

In my experience 2pc are sturdier, overall have a better feel. only downside is transport size.

Tele rods are practical for size, but often are thick and soft.
>>
>>752639
I wouldn't spend $100 on a 2 piece rod but they work fine. You sacrifice a little sensitivity for a lot of convenience. Only problem I've had was the top piece coming off during a cast. For this reason I wouldn't trust a 2pc rod with very light line, because if that line breaks if a piece detaches, you don't have a usable rod any more.
>>
>>752651
I think you got them mix up. 2 pc is the one that come apart into 2 parts for convenience of transport.

>>752652
I see. people always complain about 2 pc coming apart and not being as sensitive. However, I heard 2 pc users defend that the more expensive and modern 2 pc rods won't have that problems. It's just that someone is selling a used shimano compre 2pc for $45 that happens to be what a I need length and weight wise. However, I was planning to use that as for light casting so it might not be a good idea then
>>
Finally bought some braid line, man that shit is expensive. Thought I was going to be paying maybe $10 a spool, but most of it was in the $20-$30 range. Found some EZ Braid 20lb moss green Spiderwire for $16.99 though so I went with it.

Why is it considerably cheaper though? Is it just shit line?
>>
>>752662
Was it a 150yd spool? Normally those run <$20 while 300yd spools are like $30.

And over the long run, braid ends up being about the same as mono, if not cheaper, since you don't have to change it after 6mos.
>>
>>752663

110 yard spool. Do you need cutters or some shit for this? Scissors, nail clippers, a dinky pocket knife, nothing worked. Ended up just burning off the excess line after tying it down.
>>
>>752666
Shitty scissors don't work well for cutting braid.
>>
>>752660
No, tele rods fold down to less than a meter in length.
2 piece rods of the same length are always at least 1.5m in lentgh (makes sense lol)

As for them coming off during casts, only if you dont put them together like youre supposed to. (Not too tight, not too loose)
Only happened to me once in several years of using 2 piece rods. And it was a new rod which i gingerly tightened, so its my fault.

>>752670
This. I hate that i cant do it with my knife as easily.
Any recommendation?
>>
>>752672
Oh, I was talking about 1 pc rod as in standard regular full length rod, not telescope rod.

What happen if you tighten the 2 pc rod too much?
>>
>>752672
>can't do it with my knife
Really? I don't have a problem at all. If I'm trying to cut a 1/3" tag down to a 1/8" tag and can't get it with the knife, I just use a lighter.
>>
>>752680
You can't really tighten them too much. It's not like they're threaded or anything.

I prefer 1pc rods for the record. Mostly because I have room for them in my car and I get pissed when they aren't lined up perfectly. 2pc rods work fine but I feel like they're missing a little sensitivity and backbone. But if it makes your life easier, go for it.

>>752687

Yeeah, you can tighten it too much.
Then its an absolute pain to disassemble. Especially if its thin, and has no "grip strip" on it, like my 3pc 13ft surf rod does.

>>752691

>>
>>752705

>>752707
The piers also go out pretty far. Not sure exactly how long the one by my house is, but at least 100m out into the water. Plus around here in FL with the Gulfstream, the water gets deep pretty quick I'm sure.

Still suprising though.
>>
>>752712
Sailfish are bluewater fish. Their's no pier that goes out that far. It's a miracle that thing was close enough to be caught.
>>
>>752712
I dont use the guides for leverage. Nah fuck that lol.

Yeah, thats why shore "points" are best for fhsing for predators here. Depth comes soon, and they usually pass closr to shore on these places, compared to bays and things like that.

I want to catch mahi mahi though. They are rarely fishable from shore, but they put up a spectacular fight.
>>
>>752730
They catch those a lot in South Florida. Not sure how often on the pier, but either way it looks like a blast. They are beautiful and ugly at the same time.

I really want to get a Pompano in Pompano Beach. They look like they fight good.

Here is all you need to catch salt water fish
>1, 2, and 3 ounce pyramid sinkers, 2-4 of each, should be less than 3 dollars at a tackle shop
>Two hook bottom rigs; about 1.50-3.00 each, get a few
>Size 1 aberdeen snelled hooks

That will get you Most smaller species and is the generally agreed upon way to start in salt
For bait I like squid cut in to strips, bloodworms, and shrimp

Lures
>Gotcha plugs
>One white w/ red head, one pink with yellow belly
That will get blues and spanish

>Bucktail jigs
> 3 1/2 oz jigs, one blue one white one bright and flashy
>Same with some 1 oz jigs

>Gulp 4 inch swimming mullet
>Size 2 baitholder hooks

To rig these
>15-20 lb mono or flouro
>surgeon's loop
>Dropper loop a foot up from that
>Jig on surgeons loop
>Size 2 baitholder hook on dropper loop
>swimming mullet on each
That will kill flounder

And then grab a catfish rod or similar and do the following
> 5/0 circle hooks
>swivels
>#3 wire
>50# mono
>Pyramid sinkers
>beads
Now for rigging
>Fg knot for braid to 50 pound mono for a shock leader
>Slide on a bead, then the sinker, then another bead
>Tie on swivel
>Pick either more 50 pound mono or the #3 wire
>rig on a 5/0 hook on a 2-5 inch leader of either mono or wire
>Chunk-o-fish.png

Cast That out and set your drag just tight enough to resist the waves and set it leaning against the railing on the 2nd guide so it won't get yanked over
That will get you drum, Ray, shark, cobia, anything of size

These are in order of importance if you ask me

I forgot to add, maybe those bait holder are designed to be that way though so that they can rust away easily if needed to be cut away due to deep hook, which tend to happen when using bait. However, the hook will still rust fast in normal use due to the blood of the bait on the hook or the blood of the fish that got hooked.

You have most of the things covered. I would get some of the 3" big hammer baits, some in a really light pearly color and some in a really natural bait mimicking color. I've caught all my striper/halibut/lingcod on the"city shrimp" color, so that would be worth a try too, maybe. Also get more octopus hooks in more sizes, you can never have too many of those.

For halibut, i would let it fall all the way to the bottom and then do a slow retrieve, occasionally flicking the rod tip to speed the bait us and maybe a few pauses to let fish catch up to it. But the fish may respond to different presentations down south, if you're catching them on some type of bait, base your collection around what's working. Wouldn't hurt to try a few more colors though. Also, how do you fish those flukes? I've been wanting to use flukes more, not sure how to fish them.

I use those ewg hook for twistlock and weight and rig them up like this. Rigging them weightless might works in really calm water, but if there's any bit of wave or strong current, your fluke will be knock around. I like rigging them this way since if there are seaweed around, I won't get caught onto them

I would cast them out, let them fall to bottom, then make small jerks with my rod tip up so that they would hop up then fall back down. Sometimes I make a lot of fast jerks and sometimes i wait a long time between jerks.

Fluke is a flexible lure though and there are many way to rig and use them. I haven't tried them alll. I'm sure that you can drop shot with them if you fish from a high platform like pier and carolina rig works everywhere too. If you don't like to weedless rig then you can use an octopus hook and hook through the head as well.

If Bass Pro is good for one thing, at least they have Zoom baits for 20% off all the time.

>>753532
Medium weight rod, 6'6", and a reel that will hold ~150yds of 8lb mono. Most combos on a 6'6" medium weight rod will have a 3000 series or similar size reel that should be good for everything from panfish to bass. You could go 6lb mono too but be careful with bigger bass and weeds. Alternatively, you could run 10lb-20lb braid on that same setup of you are ready for it.
>>
>>753532
>>753536
Thinking about that more, if you think you're going to fish for trout and panfish more, I would do the 6lb. 8lb is a good all-around weight, but if you want to toss 1/8oz lures for trout and panfish, you won't get a ton of distance.

10lb braid will solve all of your problems though...

Btw, what are you looking to spend?
>>
>>753540
>>753536
100$ or less
>>
>>753541
You got a decent selection then. There is tons of nice stuff in the $70-$100 range. Best bang for the buck will be a store brand combo like a Bass Pro Tourney or whatever is in that price range at Bass Pro, Cabela's, Gander Mtn.. Otherwise Shimano Sellus/Sedona combos, Abu Cardinal STX or SX.

Pflueger President combos are nice too and normally run like $90 on whatever rod. Go to a good retailer and see what you like.
>>
>>753544
better to get a combo or buy the rod/ reel separately? or is it just personal preference
>>
>>753547
When it comes to that price range, you are probably better off just getting the combo unless you are super picky. It notmally saves you like $20 too.

You will get a $60 reel on a $50 rod for $80-$90 in most cases if you get a combo. And the sizes should be matched properly.
>>
>>753547
There are also some nice lookin Lew's combos in that price range too. And possibly a Daiwa or Quantum (but make sure you read any online reviews for Quantums or any setup).

I always say you can't really go wrong with any of the major brands in that price bracket. And even the store brand stuff is getting pretty damn nice.

Ayy good lookin. Inline spinners are a best. I mean it's no Mepps but will get the job done. Just stay away from weeds since that treble hook is basically a rake.

Did you buy that lot off ebay or something? If you want to sell a couple of those Blue Foxes, let me know. I've been having really good luck on the snakeheads with those.
>>
>>753558
I bought them locally for $1 each, seemed decent for throw away baits.
>>
>>753541
Shakespeare or zebco
>>
>>753494
muy bueno pisca

I target trout and suck at it. Perch jump in my yak and attack anything I tie to my line, kastmasters today. Have never caught a bass.
I caught 9 perch, talked to a dude at pond and he had 6 rainbows.

>>
>>753568
damn good price.
>>
>>753572
For reels? Or rods?
>>
>>753572

>>753578
Do this. Get an Ugly GX2 combo knowing you're going to replace the reel soon. I actually don't mind the combo reels but people here rip them. Replace the reel with a Shimano
>>
>>753572
>Zebco
Topkek
>Shakespeare
Only if he does an Ugly Stik and whatever better reel he likes.
>>
>>753582
That's a total waste of a reel. If he doesn't do a combo, why not just buy the rod for $10 less and get the reel he wants anyway?

Plus I'm starting to think there are a handful of better rods for either the same price or $10 more than Ugly Stiks. They are fine if you are gonna abuse the shit out of them, but a lot of other options for $50 have great action for the price.
>>
>>753590
Like I said, people here don't like them, I do. I've never had an issue with the Shakespeare reels on the GX2 combos.

Have you owned and used one or are you just going from other's opinions?

I currently on 2
>>
>>753584
I use a zebco catfish fighter. Is decent but I found it when someone was getting evicted. But I dont do a lot of fishing here in Michigan. Would you recommend replacing it if I started fishing a lot more once I move to Florida?
>>
>>753582
what shimano reel, theres like 50 that all do the same thing on amazon
>>
>>753572
>>753584
Zebco is alright.

Used their shit for years, never gave me trouble
>>
>>753606
I own one. They're just cheap plastic reels. They get the job done for awhile but are pretty rough and flimsy. Buying the combo just to replace te reel is a waste. And with anon's budget, he could get something much nicer. With those Ugly Stik combos, I always tell people to spend $20 more and get a combo with a similar qyality rod but a reel that is leagues above the one that comes on the GX2.

>>753614
I know exactly the one you are talking about. Main problem with those is they are big so you will have a hell of a time trying to fish for panfish and smaller bass. That setup is like the GX2 where they get the job done but if fishing becomes a main hobby, you will definitely upgrade. I own(ed) one of those too.
>>
>>753625
find a bunch in your price range and pick a color that match with your rod.

Color matching is important. You can't fish with a poorly color coordinated combo can you?
>>
>>753628
Yeah it is a big rod. I only use it currently for catfish. I have a ugly stik but haven't tried it out yet. Either way I already want to upgrade to something nice and simple that can put food on the table. My dad use to fish and eat shark but he doesn't have his poles anymore.

>>753625
Are you really gonna do Amazon? I would go to Bass Pro and Cabela's to at least see them IRL if possible. Find the model and size you like and if you can get a good deal on Amazon, order it after you know exactly what you want.

>>753629
>color matching
Kek, you should see my Okuma rod. White reel on an orange and grey rod. Looks awful.

>>753635
So running them through weed beds, you think I shoud weight them? They have some weight to em already so I bet I could cast em with 10lb braid rigged weedless with no weight.
>>
>>753643
9im planning on going weightless, never fished them before spent another $30 on lures today, going to spend another 20-30 soon aswell fuk
>>
>>753643
I'm in New Jersey. We don't have Cabela's and the nearest Bass Pro is in Atlantic city, a nice 1 hour 30 minutes from my NJ version of Pennsatuky. It's easier to order a rod/reel and return them if I dont like it. I have prime so they come in 2 days anyway.

All the mom and pop stores around the raritan and the tributaries charge an arm and a leg extra
>>
>>753647
For sure. Well as far as Shimanos go, Siennas are the cheaper end but I'm thinking a Sahara or Sedona would be about your price range. And I believe 2500 or maybe 3000 would be the right size for 6lb-8lb line if you want it setup for panfish, trout, and bass.

Are you gonna do the Ugly Stik? If so, probably just 6'6" and medium weight is the way to go if ordering it online. You don't have to get the combo, you can just grab the Ugly Stik GX2 rod for less if you are going to get a reel anyway.

If you see anything else you may like just post it here and chances are somebody has used one and can tell sizes.

>>753645

Ayy turns out they work.

I'm getting the best action running them almost like a buzzbait. Steady retrieve just fast enough to keep em on top.
>>
>>753379
I got most of my tackle second hand. Like at yard sales, antique stores, hand-me-downs, thrift shops. Most places like that you can get a deal if you buy everything. I'd usually buy it all and sort it out into would-use and never-use then give the never-use stuff to friends.
>>
>>753669
I'm too picky for that. I have been looking a little to see if I could get a decent price on a bug set of stuff like anon earlier who got all the Rooster Tails and Blue Foxes because I will always run those through the weeds and the Mayans or bluegill don't really care what color they are.

I need to get to a fishing show one of these days. I remember going to them as a kid and always walking out with close to $100 worth of tackle for $30. You can always find some soft baits that will eventually get ripped up by bass.

If I do find 100 Rooster Tails for $30 on eBay or something like that, I promise I will share with needy anons. I grabbed some random $2 crankbaits a week or two ago from the clearance bin at Gander Mtn just to help fill out dude from work's new tackle bag. If my lil bro went out with me more, I would def give him more.
>>
>>753701
good guy pepsi, that reminds me if anyone needs a $5 tackle wwarehouse code, i can give one its just enough to get free shitting usually,
>>
>>753654
1 piece or 2 piece ugly stik? the rod I have now is a cheaper 2 piece Shakespeare rod i got from a friend. It catches stuff fine, but I'm looking for better/sturdier equipment
>>
>>753719
Maybe I should order the Blue Foxes through there. Still have a cart full of them on Bass Pro. I'll probably hold off and wait until I need a couple more things to make shipping actually worth it.

Bass Pro doesn't have regular dressed Vibrax's on their site. They do have these UV ones that caught my eye. I wish they were easier to find at stores.

Oh, and the Bass Pro closer to my house has one single Vibrax on a peg by the Mepps that has been there for a few weeks. A blue and silver one. I'm gussing somebody probably bought online or at the Miami store and returned it there.

I prefer 1pc rods. But I also drive an SUV so size isn't an issue.

I think you lose a tiny bit of action and backbone with 2pc rods, but if a 2pc is going to save you a bunch of headaches in transport, go for it.
>>
>>753724
check the price the $5 off code is enough to get free shitting usually, the shit i actually want they dont have in stock

>>
>>753722

Check if the middle of the part of the backseat can be folded down and open up into the trunk compartment of your car. If your car can then you should have no problem storing a 1 pc rod. I pretty much take my 8 ft rod that way to go fishing in my tiny civic. The only downside is that you can't fit 5 people in the car when going fishing but i almost always go alone anyway
>>
>>753742
oh nice i have a civic too, looks like im good to go then

That dude I work with drives a Crown Vic and keeps his rod in there. Either the seats don't fold down or he doesn't know how and he has fucked up that Sellus so much trying to keep it in there. The top guide is so fucked, and a bunch of other guides are bent as well.

I caught my first fish on opening day last weekend. I did not get a hold of the pic until now though.

This was a beautiful rainbow trout - about 13 inches long from end to end.

I felt so proud when I landed this baby.

>>
>>753775
>>753770
What weight is it? 4? 5?
>>
>>753815
Hope not for anons sake. Throwing those big as poppers and streamers will be damn near impossible with anything under an 8 wt. Im guessing the original owner had two rods. One for bass (those poppers and streamers) and a smaller wt for tossing those dry flies to some trout.
>>
>>753815
The rod has AFTMA no 6 on it, I guess that equates to size of line.
