Wildlife Stories General 1/2

Ran into some wolves yesterday, how much danger was I in?

Greentexting because it's probably the most convenient format to read, I dunno.

>So I live in a national park where there are a number of deer, elk, coyotes, bears and wolves. The deer and elk come directly into the town quite frequently (especially the deer, which are practically tame) but I had never seen a wolf or bear since moving here.
>Anyway yesterday I was walking on a trail about ten kilometres away from town when I decided I should turn back since it would be getting dark around 5:30 and I wanted to get home by at least six.
>As soon as I turned around a wolf walked onto the trail right in front of me, and there were two others behind it, at this point I was maybe ten feet or so away from the wolves
>I immediately skipped back a few feet when I realized these were wolves and not just a dog, before I started slowly backing up
>When I had gained a bit of distance I shouted at them as loud as I could and brandished a big stick I had found, but they really didn't seem to care at all
>Since I was walking backwards away from town the wolves were blocking the trail which would take me back, two of them were hanging back and one was walking slowly towards me the entire time
>>
>>624605

2/2

>Since I was walking uphill, and faster than the wolf I was out of sight pretty quickly when I turned and walked rapidly for a minute or so before I entered the woods to get around the wolves
>I ended up in a marsh and circled around back to the trail and never saw them again

So was an attack likely at all? I know non rapid wolves rarely attack humans but they also rarely approach humans as well I believe and since I live in a national park there's a decent chance these wolves had been handled by people or had other experience with them, also I think the wildlife is bolder than usual in this area, as we often have bears entering the town etc.

Share wildlife stories/tell me if I was likely to be attacked ITT.
>>
>>624606

*rabid*

And I should add that the wolves didn't display much in the way of aggression that I know of, there was no growling, for example. Pretty cool experience all in all, they were sort of qt.
>>
I really need a new recording. But anyway, was camping with a couple friends and we were up really late (and rather buzzed), so to keep our spirits up my friend told a joke.

I usually bring one of my recording rigs and record several hours hoping something cool happens. And the rest, is history...

Wolves that are stalking prey don't actually seem menacing at all. Most of the time they look likena dog would if it were intrigued by you in a playful manner. Ears perked, highly alert and approaching what they should be afraid of means yes, you were indeed in very serious trouble. Dogs and wolves are related but their mannerisms can and will be totally different. They were tracking you and probably had been for a while. Carry mace with you as that could have ended very badly for you.
>>

>Most of the time they look likena dog would if it were intrigued by you in a playful manner. Ears perked, highly alert and approaching what they should be afraid of

Damn, yeh, that's what they looked like. Pretty glad I noped the fuck out of there then, I was feeling a little silly about wading through a freezing river and walking through a marsh to avoid them after people were telling me wolves basically never attack humans.

What got me at the time was they appeared in front of me basically the moment I turned around, which was freaky, and they did approach me for sure.
>>

>I was feeling a little silly about wading through a freezing river and walking through a marsh to avoid them after people were telling me wolves basically never attack humans.
Typically they don't. You going through that water is probably what saved you though. Threw your scent off.

You should report that to wildlife authorities. This could very well be a pack that is beginning to look at humans as potential prey.

I'm not too up on gun laws. I've never fired one honestly. I didn't really consider myself "in the bush" either since I was on a public trail attached to a national park town, though it was a long one.

I'll just probably avoid that area for some time. Too bad because it's my favourite spot. Pic related.

I'm planning a 10 day thru-hike and most likely i will encounter some wild life (hopefully just deer and elk). In the off chance that i encounter a wolf

which of these techniques would be most effective in neutralizing an alpha male? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fElhm_JlnXg

I'm leaning towards the suplex but some of you seem to favor the classic body slam.

Thanks.
>>
>>624757
next time you see a wolf you should body slam it.
>>
>>624792

He had two buddies to tag out to though!
>>
Wolves generally don't like people. Most likely they were just curious, if they really wanted to follow you, they would have not stopped. Wolves generally only attack something that's running away though.

As for throwing off your scent by going through a marsh, that's pretty BS. A wolf can easily track scents over water. Regardless, they had you within sight, they would not lose sight and then track by scent, they would have kept you in sight if they wanted to eat you.

Actual danger was low, wolf attacks are rare. Still a slight danger. Follow up with park rangers snd see if anything has been fine or had further reports.
>>
Basically in the last 75 years, 2 people were documented killed by wolves. North American wolves were always respected by Native Americans. They natives also did not take any shit from the wolves, and therefore wolves over here are very timid of humans usually.

Opposite in Europe, where humans have been food for wolves for centuries. The country with the most deaths by wolves is France.
>>
I live in Croatia and I've encountered bears few times in my life.
Few years ago I was hiking in national park "Velebit" when i stumbled upon 2 bear cubs. They were 20 meters from me, roaming around, but i didnt see the mother. I snaped a photo and turned the other way around. All of a sudden I heard a roar. I bet that she was calling for them. I almost shat my pants but I just kept walking they way I came from.
>>
>>624750
Whts the problem man. Its a good thing. Humans should adapt to the animals, not the other wy around.

Carry a spear and be ready to climb up a tree nd youll be fine.

Paying out of pocket for education and medical expenses is pretty shit though.
Oh and we Americans pay FUCK tons of money to fund our ever growing war machine that we have no say in whatsoever.
At least other countries get to benefit from social services from paying their taxes. We on the other hand flush money away so some meat heads get to play police man in foreign countries to protect our masters' special interests to line their pockets.
>>
>>624790
i don't recommend either of them except the one where you armlock the neck, you have to control their mouth the rest of the wolf is harmless.
if you watch how golden eagles kill wolves they take control of the mouth, if you wear gloves you should grab the lower jaw in a way that your knuckles are resting against the soft-palate that way the wolf can't effectively bite down or shake it's head because the lower jaw can't take that shit. once you took control of the jaw punch it in the throat and jugulars until it passes out or starts choking. or you can grab the opposing foreleg under it's chest and pull it while pushing down the head with your left hand holding the jaw. after the wolf is on it's side use your knees to crush the ribcage.
works on large dogs just fine should work on a punny wolf.
>>
>>625110

Canada here, and we pay out of pocket for education as well (though it is less) and while you don't pay for medical expenses good luck getting procedures for non life threatening/emergency problems if you need them. I have a knee with something like a detached piece of cartilage, every two years or so it collapses, swells up and I'm put into a splint for a month. I've been waiting for surgery for SIX YEARS, since ortho is one of the most common surgeries people need and my knee problems aren't incredibly serious.

I've also had chronic eczema from a young age which leads to some scalp and skin issues. Generally it's treatable but I've put in dozens of tickets to see a dermatologist over my life time and I've NEVER been scheduled for an appointment.
>>
>>625118
Yes but, does your country spend $600 billion a year on a defense budget in a time of peace? Ours does.
Someone has to pay for that.
>>
>>625122

You guys pay 3.5% of GDP on your military and we pay 1.5% of ours. You pay a little more than double per capita, it's a lot, but it's less than Russia per capita.

I don't think America is perfect by any means, but a lot of people have this warped 'Michael Moore' perspective on how the more socialist countries work which is just totally wrong. I've listed my personal experiences with Canada's healthcare system and I've heard that in the U.K, which offers a more comprehensive 'free' system, the waits are often so extreme that people are going blind, for example, before getting their necessary eye surgeries.

Oh really anon?...

"Large prey, such as moose, elk, and muskoxen, usually stand their ground. Should this occur, the wolves hold back, as they require the stimulus of a running animal to proceed with an attack"

-Mech, L. David (1981). The Wolf: The Ecology and Behaviour of an Endangered Species. University of Minnesota Press. ISBN 0-8166-1026-6

You think water will throw off your scent? Wolves can smell objects under water from particles floating to the surface. They will also readily follow prey into water.

Me Stop posting? You're obviously the one who has absolutely no idea what youre talking about. Fucking moron.

>You think water will throw off your scent? Wolves can smell objects under water from particles floating to the surface. They will also readily follow prey into water.
At what point did anon submerge himself in the water and wait with a breathing apparatus? Or where did I say "Go jump in a body of water to mask your scent"? If we waded through a body of water then yes his scent would indeed be harder to track as his ENTIRE BODY would be moving and the particles that make him his scent would be diluted by the water.

If I have to explain to you why what you said completely destroys whatever half brained notion you think makes you intelligent then you're a bigger moron than what you think I am.

>>
>>624867
Thing is, evolution is ongoing, and there's a ton of coyote and dog genes circulating in wolves these days, under selection pressures that are very novel for North American wolves. We just can't treat traditional behavior patterns as some kind of guarantee going forward.

>>
>>625364
>>625306

Really now?

You realize they have dogs that are trained for underwater body recovery. A dog is just a wolf. Body recovery dogs can locate a body that has been submerged for DAYS, just from particles rising up and being released into the air.

A wolf could easily smell someone that's gone underweater, let along through it. Water does not "wash away" scent.
>>
>>624605
Dude, you just greentexted a story but typed it like a normal story. That's not how greentexting works. I applaud you for it though because I really hate greentext stories. This "convenience" thing is nonsense, if I read a story I want it to be enjoyable to read and not a bunch of sentence fragments. So thank you for doing it this way.
>>
>>625306
Actually, experts often say going through water makes it easier for a dog to track your scent, because as soon as you leave the water you're dripping water that smells like you all over the ground making your trail very easy to pick up.
>>
>>624617
i aint clickin dat shit senpai
>>
>>625487
running water does carry away scent and make it difficult to track someone if hes is wading running water for miles especially if he gets out at a spot where a dog can't negotiate the shore.
>>
>>625493
they are saying that because they hate to wade through water when chasing someone wet shoes and whatnot.

One of my other friends reacts every time I say "douchebear" with
>"it's not the bear's fault, stop calling him that"

I'm honestly unsure of what to think of the situation. Technically it was Jeff's fault the bear took his pack, buuuuut...
>>
>>624605
had a somewhat stupid moose encounter recently. i was going for a hike, and as i left my car by the road there was some rustling in the undergrowth at the edge of a field. huge fucking moose appears. it just stands there, which was somewhat weird. i take some pics with my shitty gopro, and after about one minute the animal retreats into the woods. i begin my hike up a large hill. when i'm finally loungin at the top with some rum and smokes, two rifle shots penetrate the silence. turns out it's hunting season, and i've scared the moose straight back towards the chasing hunters. it probably would get bagged soon anyways, but i felt stupid being an indirect accomplice.
>>
>>626083
Jeff sounds like a liability, don't take him camping again.
>>
>>626095
If we start pointing fingers it was my fault I didn't start a fire the moment we set up camp. Also only Jeff's stuff was broken, so I really didn't lose anything as a result of this except a little peace of mind on all trips since.
>>
Not really my story, but

>roll over, go back to sleep

Apparently he heard a big branch snap as if something heavy stepped on it, and heard twigs snapping around the tent all night within 30 feet.

Probably a herd of deer or some shit, but he was fucking awake the entire night muttering some shit.

you have horrible joke delivery. also coyote howls like that are fairly common about an hour after sun down. i was in a canyon/bowl in the texas hill country one summer evening and heard one probably that loud, all around us too. the coyotes came to get the same thing we were there for, water.

i don't know what makes them all go nuts at once but it's normally a little after dark and they do it a couple times and then are quiet the rest of the night. i've heard it so many times it doesn't even make me think twice about any danger, just wether or not the food is tied up.

That's not true. The scent would be still there, and would be even easier for the wolf to pick up as soon as he left the water, because the water running off you makes even MORE scent. Bunch of water that smells like you making a nice trail right to where you are.
