Is it by chance the guide on the tip? If so, they sell kits to replace them at Walmart. I've done it once before on an old rod; worked fine. If by chance you bought it from Walmart, they'll likely replace the rod for free if they still carry that model/you still have the receipt.

Also, I made a trip for continuity's sake. + I don't have to say "Indiana anon here again" to preface each post.

Pic is of a 3.98# bass I caught last year. Was my first bass on a memecaster, also first on a topwater.

Its the 5th guide from the top, so its a smaller one.

Obligatory "bowfin" picture

Probably gonna head over by that lake this afternoon after I get a haircut. I found a new lake yesterday that isn't too far from my house but it is kinda strange. Bottom is all sandy, some small weeds all around by the shore but doesn't seem to be any lillies or big patches. Saw a dead bluegill and dead cichlid. I was getting a few bites and I have a feeling there are lots of snakeheads in there.

The one thing that made me weary of this new lake was the lack of baitfish. Most places when I run a spinner close to shore, little baitfish will get freaked out and you can see them jump. Not sure how healthy that lake is but it might be worth trying again.
>>
>>742204
Your best bet would be to try to find a rod with similar guides for sale on Craigslist or your European equivalent , buy it and then strip the guides from it to keep backups
Strip anything else of worth and you may as well save the blank
>>
lurker here, central illinois fishing. don't have shit for equipment and starting to get more into it. wanting to buy some more rods/reels but want to do it cheaply. what thoughts/reservations would you /out/fags have on this lot?

follow up for newfag me; i do mostly bank fishing and enjoy crappie and bass fishing. am happy to catch anything mind you, went fishing over weekend for first time in a long time. just bobber and worm/minnow but fun
>>
>>742217

Figure out roughly what size you need, wrap it on the rod with nylon thread, epoxy over thread.

Go to mudhole.com. they should have the guide you need, epoxy and thread, and they have videos on exactly how to do it.
>>
>>742250
You could probably buy that lot and resell them for more than $45, but I wouldn't consider anything in that lot to be something you'd want to go forward with as a "serious" fisherman. Unless you literally only want to ever use a bobber & worm, in which case that's a great buy. A cheap (<$50) medium-heavy spinning combo from Walmart would have you covered for anything you'd be likely to catch from a bank.

what would I be looking for in a rod/reel for light duty bass fishing? the appeal to multiple rods for me is to not have to switch out the gear as often

been lurking out in general for a few months, getting out more this year. pic related is sunset from saturday night from the bank

just want to fish some bass and crappie here and there but want to actually catch something for a change
>>
>>742216
Nice fish man
>>
>>742270
I would get a 7 ft medium action rod, it will be a bit heavy for crappie but just about perfect for bass fishing
I have an old ugly stick that I use sometimes as well as a St Croix
One cheap the other pretty pricy, but both work well
Get a 2-3000 size spinning reel, doesn't have to be expensive a good cheap one alot of people use is a shimano sienna, I think there's a few folks here use them

Figure 40-50$ for the rod and $30 for the reel
And you will have a rod and reel that will last you a lifetime, and unless you really get I to fishing you probably my won't ever be wanting so.ething more
Spool that rewl with some 8 lb monofilament and you should be set up to catch near about anything g freshwater

While it is nice to have multiple rods it's easy enough to use a snap swivel to change out baits/lures quickly
If you start fishing more and really get into it then it may be worth it getting a second rod
>>
>>742248
Are those all spincast reels? I wouldn't do it unless you want to sell them.

>>742263
I'll post the copypasta for newccomers in a second.

>>742288
This is bretty good. 6'-7' medium weight rod, 2000-3000 size reel, ~8lb Trilene or other good brand monofilament line. Only thing I wouldn't do is buyin the rod and reel seperate. You could buy a Shimano Sienna for $30 and then an Ugly Stik for $40 and be fine, but if you go to Bass Pro, Cabela's, Gander Mtn, or even Dick's and buy one of their rod & reel combos, you will get a little bit more for the money. Normally a $75 combo will retail for closer to $100 if you buy the rod and reel on their own.

>tfw finally saved it so I don't have to retype it almost every thread

Best bet for fishing lakes and ponds, get yourself a medium weight rod and reel. 6'6" rod with a reel that holds ~150yds of 8lb or 10lb mono. Spool it up with decent 8lb monofilament line, most fishing outlets can do this for you. If you want to fish for more carp or catfish, maybe 10lb line. But 8lb is good for just about anything freshwater. You can still cast panfish lures with it and haul in bigger carp and bass.

Then grab assorted hooks, a couple bobbers, and some split shots. Pliers or a multitool are nice too. Best bet is just running nightcrawlers on a bobber and get comfortable with casting as well as seeing what you catch at these lakes. Then you can start with some lures. Ask what other people are using, or if you are catching crappie, largemouth, whatever, you could ask here for reccommendations or look elsewhere online. Watch youtube vids on how to fish the lures. Find out what works well at your lakes, and just keep going from there.

For a medium weight rod/reel combo (spinning reel of course), you can grab something for $40. But if you think you will really be into it or aren't too strapped for cash, you can buy a combo closer to $75 that will be much nicer and you won't want to replace after a couple months.

They do sell little starter kits with a couple hooks, weights, shitty bobbers, and a lure or two, but it isn't enough go last very long.

Sorry I'm posting a ton at once, but I also want to add something if you really want to run more than one setup.

I would grab a medium weight rod and reel first (6'6" rod, 3000 size reel, 8lb mono line) and make sure you get the hang of things first. You can still cast some <1/8oz lures for bluegill and crappie (not super far) and you will be able to handle decent sized channel cats and carp on that as well. That's a good setup if you are mainly targeting bass.

If you are just fishing lakes and ponds from shore, I think an ultralight rod and reel is the way to go for a second setup. Something like a 6' light/medium rod with a ~1000 series reel and 4lb mono line. With this, you will be able to cast 1/8oz lures plenty far and could even run 1/16oz. On days when you are only catching crappie and <14" bass, it will be much more fun. Plus just easier to work the lighter lures. And if you do hit a 4lb+ largemouth on the light setup, the fight will be really fun.

Probably 70-80 percent of all my fishing is done with soft plastic lures, for bass atleast
It's funny some years there's a certain hot lure,
7-8 years ago it was black worms , then after that red surgical tubing or any bright long red worm,
Then black worms again then senkos, or anything wacky rigged, then black worms with chartruce curly tails, this year it seams to be soft plastic swimbaits that are doing good,
Beat part about soft lures is they're cheap enough you can buy a bunch to find what works

I'll post my "Largemout Essentials" kit. I like inline spinners a lot like Mepps and Rooster tails. Bass and panfish love them. Rapalas are always great too. And then there's a ton of soft plastics especially on days when you want to fish a bit deeper.

>>742302
I meant to ask, what is that little slot behind the eye? I have seen those lures before where you change out the tail if needed but never thought of trying em. What is so special about them?
>>
>>742294
Looks like your collection grew a bit since the last time you posted.

What's up with the blue line? Is that mono or braid? Closest thing I've seen to that is the SpiderWire blue camo line.

I also have that same Bass Pro popper with the red spots on them. I wanted some smaller ~2" poppers and the Bass Pro brand ones were the only smaller ones. Everything else was closer to 3"+.

>>742311
Might be a rattler slot?

I know some fancy softies have a slit in their belly that leads to a slightly bigger opening in the innards where you put a rattler or two, or pack some attractant.

Never seen those flukes hooked through the top like that. I always see em hooked through the bottom for weedless setups.

You have a lot of luck with the black and chartruese PowerBait worms?

>8.5/10, needs a Rapala or two
But flukes do replace cranks like Rapalas in a lot of situations. I get better hookups with cranks since they have the treble hooks but running them through cover is a pain in the ass.

>>742319
For sure. I'm about to take all the SpiderWire off my reels that are spooled with it. I'm noticing that it likes to fray much, much easier than PowerPro.

PowerPro ftw but if you got a good deal on the KastKing, can't go wrong.
>>
>>742330

typically 10lb. I'm just getting back into fishing. one of the rods the lines still good, the other is shot so I need a replacement.
I typically go for bass and the occasional trout, but the waters I hope to fish are also home to pike, so I don't know how lucky I'll be this season.
>>

are eels a meme?
Ohio's DNC lists them as "prevalent" throughout the state but I've never seen or heard of anyone catching or even seeing one.

Anyway, yeah tell me how the catfishing goes. If you're in CT then you'll probably get channel cats and white cats at around a pound. Northern states don't usually carry monsters

Sunset time , and only out if the river , apparently if you go kayaking on clear days you will sometimes see them sitting on bottom in the river but not often

Going to target this section of river that's had a bunch of gravel and shit pulled out of it , deep so there should be alot of big fish

I just hate fishing alone at night to be honest
I think this section of river has potential for monsters, depths of up to 35 ft
Slower then the rest of the river
I've actually seen catfish sunbathing on waters surface one or two times there

I would kayak fish it but I refuse to be o that water after dark
It's spooky

>>742456
If you want to know the glory of braid, I would spool up some 15lb or 20lb PowerPro on there. It will cast further than the 10lb mono.

>>742460
The main differences are that braid will be much thinner at the same line strength compared to mono. It floats (but so does mono) so some lures may run a bit more shallow. It is slightly more visible in the water compared to mono, but if you are running 15lb moss green, it should blend right in unless the water is tap water clear and the fish are super picky, but this can be solved with a flouro leader.

>>
>>742460
>>742471
Didn't really mention why braid is so great.

First is strength. 30lb braid is the same diameter as 10lb mono. So if your reel holds 150yds of 10lb mono, you can do 150yds of 30lb braid or 200yds+ of 15lb or 20lb braid. I would run the 15lb or 20lb instead because you still get way more strength and will be able to cast lures much further compared to 10lb mono.

Braid also doesn't degrade like mono does. With mono, you have to change it out at least once a year or it will get really brittle. Braid, I've been told you run it for 2 years, then unspool it and put it on for another 2 years in the opposite direction. The longevity negates the price difference.

My favorite thing about braid is the fact that it doesn't have memory like mono. So you don't get those stupid loops in the line like you get on mono which also helps cast further. It is more flexible than mono too and I always feel like the knots tie better with braid.

Braid also doesn't stretch like mono, so you can feel every little bite or every rock if you are jigging along the bottom. Just gotta be careful not to set the hook as hard as you would do with mono because of this. If you set the hook real hard with braid, it's easy to pull it right out of the fish's mouth.
>>
>>742478
Replace the treble hook. A lot of my bites are hooked on the rear when an indecisive fish nips the tail.
>>
>>742486
Though it's worth mentioning braid tangles more
>>
>>742471
>>742486
Oh man thanks. Now i'm itching to give it a try. Does it take some getting used to? Sounds really interesting and really makes mono pale in comparison. didn't think i'd switch getting back in, but might as well start off fresh.
>>
>>742491
I have never, once had that issue. If anything, mono has always been more prone to tangles for me because of the loops you get from the memory make tangles much worse.

>>742460
Also, if you do go with braid, you might want to do a mono backing on the spool. Braid is more slippery than mono, so if you spool it really loose, the whole bunch of line will slip and rotate around the reel spool before the drag kicks in.

Lots of newer reels will have little rubber parts on the spool to stop it from slipping. If not, you can get away without a backing as long as you keep the line real tight while spooling it. Otherwise you do 10yds-20yds of mono on the spool first (enough that it wraps around the knot a couple times) and then tie the braid to that and spool the rest of it with braid.
>>
>>742311
It's called a spooltek, it was made specifically for snook fishing near bridges. It had a deployable steel cable leader that withstands damage far better than a 100lb mono leader and it prevents the fish from throwing the lure.
>>
>>742494
Nah there's nothing really different about fishing with it besides it being a little more bouyant than mono. Otherwise you will just notice how much further you can cast on 15lb or 20lb Power Pro compared to 10lb mono.

And remember what I said about spooling it up on the reel here >>742498

How do you guys run buzzbaits? Steady retrieve at the top? Or buzz it at the top, let it sink for a second, buzz, repeat?

>>742509
Wow, that's some Inspector Gadget shit. I guess that way the bait doesn't get all chewed up either. I have some painted spinners that are pretty chipped up from bass and snakeheads.

>>742537
Most of the time, you will still break it at the knot just like mono. That's always the weakest part of the fishing line. If I'm running a reel with 20lb or 30lb braid, I will normally bend the hook off the snag or pop open the snap swivel before I break any line.

You could also buy yourself one of those 30yd spools of flourocarbon for leaders. If you run 20lb main line, run a 15lb flourocarbon leader. Flouro is the less visible of any line, so it will make it nearly invisible to the fish. Flouro also stretches more than braid so it will give you a lil shock resistance when you set hooks. It's good to have some flouro for leaders even if you don't run braid just in case you run into picky fish and clear water since it blends in with the water so well.

Dick's has the best prices on Power Pro. 300yd spools are $27.99 I think and 150yd spools are maybe $17.99 but not positive on the 150yd price. Bass Pro and Cabela's both want like $5 more for the 300yd spools.

All the retailers have sales on it too, Dick's just had it for BOGO 50% off. Power Pro is the way to go with braid too. There are some budget brands, but line isn't really something to cheap out on and not worth saving the $5. I run SpiderWire on a few of my rods (bought a few spools when it was on sale) and it is decent but it seems to fray much easier than Power Pro. Sometimes I have to cut off a few feet near the lure because the line frays a litte (either from the guides or rubbing on rocks and weed, not sure) but it only seems to be an issue on the rods with SpiderWire.

And the flourocarbon, if you want to grab that you should be able to find a shorter spool for cheap. I remember buying a 30yd spool of Berkley Vanish a couple years back and I think it was something like $5. Def less than $10. It's not necessary though but if you run 20lb braid with a 15lb flouro leader, you will always break the leader if you get a bad snag instead of losing a good chunk of main line.

If you ever get a snag though and have to pull on the braid to break it, make sure you wear a glove or I always wrap a rag around my hand. Otherwise you will cut your hand up something fierce. I accidentally got my finger caught in some 15lb trying to break the line a week or two ago and it was like a really bad papercut.

Abu Garcia STX on a MH, fast action, 7' 3" rod No. 8 Tackle Blackout rod

Abu Black Max on a 7' medium uglystik

Abu Orra on a 6' 6" medium uglystik

Shimano Sedona 1000 on a 5' 6" light (may be ultralight) uglystik

I've bought almost all of this since the new year. I have a problem. Pls help.

>>742581
I got a few more bites on those lizards but eventually got pissed because the cover was so damn heavy. I think I'm gonna try them weightless next time and kinda run them along the top of the weeds.

And for the rubber bands, grab some like pic related. I actually got this bag from some beauty supply store I was delivering to so maybe the beauty section of Walmart or any supermarket or grocery store will have them by the hair stuff. Best thing is this big bag of a couple hundred was free because owner was a bro who was tryin to become a trucker and askin a bunch of questions.

With the rubberbands though, be careful about keeping them next to soft plastics since some soft plastics have that shit that will melt other rubbers. Not sure what it is, but it didn't melt the natural colored rubberbands or these red ones, but it melted some black ones I actually got from Bass Pro in some saltwater rigging section. I'm thinking maybe the black ones were latex while the other ones were natural rubber.

Yeah running them through weeds can be a bitch. When I get a bite I normally just stop and let it sit. Maybe give it a few tiny pops and they usually take it.

I'll keep an eye out for those rubber bands next time I go to the store. I don't usually keep my cranks next to the soft plastics so I think it'll be aight either way.

those craw jigs are good shit.

No fish in the kayak, did see some sturgeons jumping, and all the cormorants that frequent the area seem to be back, even say a few with alewife in their mouths. Wicked windy today down at the sand flat I was going to drift. Tried a few drifts for flounder but I was moving too fast. Might bring a spare plastic bag with me and use it as a drift bag next time.

Good day though kayaked about 10 miles and fished all day, so I ain't made. The smell of saltwater also made a day without fish much more tolerable.

Here's the video so you can see how to do it right and how simple it makes life. When you find those small rubberbands, it will be the best $2 ever spent.

I normally don't have cranks and soft plastics together either, but I had that little 6-slot box I keep in my back pocket and one of those rubber Storm lures, a jighead with a PowerGrub, and a crank with the black rubberband all in one slot and the rubberband melted all over everything.

>>742591
Ahh, you're in Canada. Well either way, PowerPro is one of the main companies for braid so they should sell it anywhere that carries fishing stuff. Walmart has it too.

>>742595
But wut did that little abbreviation even mean?

Also I agree I have way too much tackle, I don't reccommend anybody goes that far. It totally isn't necessary to have 5 diferent colors of the same exact size Rapala in order to catch fish. But it's fun to collect it and try out new lures in new places. Keeps it interesting even when you aren't catching much.
>>
>>742593

>>742594
>I really hope to fucking god you guys don't carry ALL that tackle with you when you fish.

Nah. I keep most of it in my car. I have a bag for stuff I use a lot. I just grab some shit I think will work. I don't even expect to use most of it 95% of the time. I just like having extra incase I lost a bunch or I can give it to friends. Plus buying unnecessary shit is like half the fun of the sport.

>>742603
Awesome. I'll check it out.
>>
>>742596
I thought about a Stradic, especially one of those nicer ones but goddamn it's gonna be rough to end up spending $500 on a combo. If I stopped buying $30-$50 in lures at least once a week and didn't drop $100-$200 on a combo every month or two, it wouldn't be a big deal.

I think I want to get a decent 1000 size reel with 6lb braid and put that on a nice rod like a St. Croix Mojo. Maybe I will stack up a lil for a Stradic. If not a 1000 size, maybe a nice 3000 size for 20lb braid.

You don't know who you're talking to...

But anyway, all of my stuff fits in my bag (although it is heavy as fuck). I can park real close to the water at most places I fish, so I will often just leave my bag in the grass somewhere close to where I'm fishing. And then I'll put whatever I want to use on 2 or maybe 3 rods and start walking up and down the shore with just the rods.

Otherwise I have that small 6-slot box and I can load that up with a few lures and toss it in my back pocket. If I'm going to walk quite a bit, I will just do that.

I'm still thinking about grabbing a Plano Weekender 3500 to carry around with me. Or I need to get back to Gander Mtn and get that small store-brand one that they sell. I like that one a lot. Pic related is the Gander Mtn one, I think it's 2 or 3 3500? size boxes and one small 6-slot box in that pocket.

I'm also thinking about the worm binder. Bass Pro's tackle bag selection was wiped out yesterday though. I'm just not sure how bulky the binder will be with 20-30 bags of soft plastics.

Hey all I just got back from the store, I was the guy asking about info for beginners two days ago. I ended up with a Berkley 7' medium power rod, with a Quantum Triax reel. He wound it up with 120 yards of 10lb line for free. Cost for both was $55, which was below what I was expecting to spend. The guy seemed to know what he was talking about and told me of a few places to fish around my town. He said for catching small mouth, crappie and walleye I won't need anymore rod than that, especially just starting out.

We picked up some lures, a Flicker Shad, Pop-R, an Aguila spinner. Also got some lead shot and some single hooks. My friend and I got our fishing license today, and we are going out to catch some suckers this weekend.

There's a few little ponds in New Britain that are all around baseball fields and public parks. They aren't too big but hopefully they aren't overfished. In IL, I had some ponds like that but they weren't really worth it for bass. Could go out there and get some carp or channel cats a lot of the time, as well as tiny bluegill for days.

Pic related looks like a good area to check out on a Saturday or whatever when you have the whole day free. Lots of these lakes look like you could either get there from a main road or just skirt private property and get to the shoreline. Pond hop from spot to spot all day.

Hey /ftt/, amateur angler wish a question.

Fishing season is about to open in Washington for a lot of the inland lakes and such, and there is a statewide derby for select bodies of water.

I just bought the "ultimate fishing manual" guide, and I have been doing some research on the side as well.

I wanted to ask you though - what would you use to fish for largemouth bass and rainbow trout in a lake at 5am?

My friend has a small barge I plan to use - would trolling be more effective than short fishing?

Can you guys recommend an ideal set up for a rod?

I appreciate any input given.

You got a lot of shoreline to fish at this place. Plus it's kinda narrow so if you want to run something in deeper water, you should be able to cast out that way.

And I'm looking in the little more populated areas because those are often the ones with industrial and commercial areas that have manmade ponds where nobody fishes. They will have tons of shore access because they mow the grass around the lakes and you can normally park right by the lake on a Sunday afternoon and everybody will leave you alone.

>short fishing
You mean shore fishing?

And I would reccommend something like I posted here >>742293 and >>742311

At 5am, if the water is fairly calm and you can see the bass jumping, I might run some topwater like poppers. That is normally feeding time for largemouth as long as the weather is right. So if not topwater, you should be able to get away with shallow running crank baits, spinners, or rubber flukes. This is all assuming your water is getting warmer. If it is really cool at the time and the bass aren't even in pre-spawn mode yet, might have to run some jigs or Texas rigged worms real slow along the bottom.
>>

Idk shit about trolling. I always thought a lot of people ran spoons and Kastmasters n stuff quite a bit. Or in a deeper area, sometimes those longer banana-shaped deep diving cranks.

>>742733
Depending on the size of the trout, you may want to be running two different setups. If you want to go hard for the big largemouth in cover like weeds and underwater tree branches, you can run 10lb-12lb mono on a 7' medium or medium-heavy rod. If the trout are smaller, they might get spooked by the same line and tackle so...

Idk much about the trout fishing, but for the largemouth in the early morning, fishing right at the edge of weed beds and dropoffs is probably gonna be the way to go. Like I said, that's when they will be lookin for some smaller fish to feed on so some nice sized shallow diving cranks or spinners should get em going. Or topwater like poppers and possibly buzzbaits if the wind and water is calm and the bass are jumping.

I use the cheap method from canoe when trolling. I target both bass, trout, and togue with the same technique.

3 way swivel
one tied with braid 10# 1' with 2oz surf weight
one tied with flouro 12# to either a spoon, grey ghost, or panther martin inline spinner #15

I find the grey ghost to be most effective. This is a good alternative to expensive lead line setups, and can produce just as effectively.

You can use a wide variety of lures, and even bait with this method, so don't limit yourself to a few spoons, experiment.

I find grey ghost flies work well, and basic red with white stripe spoons.

3/0 and 4/0 widegap hooks. Pic related. They'll work for almost any lure you get. You'll want to grab some bullet weights and some split shot too.

Honestly you could probably just get a couple different size/color curly tail worms, lizards (any creature bait really) if you want, and some pre-rigged swimbaits (berkley powerbait or storm are the brands I'd suggest) and you'll catch fish.

Then watch some videos on YouTube on how to fish whatever you get. You don't have to buy a bunch of stuff to get set up.

It would be cool to do something like /o/'s sticky with rods, reels, and line. It would take me ages though since I'm always just on my phone and have no software like that on my ol' laptop.

Anon made this thing on baitcasters, but he has a hard-on for Shimano and Daiwa and hates everything else. Plus it's kinda hard to compare one reel over another unless somebody has owned and used every single one extensively. And a $200 Shimano reel and $200 Abu reel should both be really nice and compete with eachother. A $100 Daiwa isn't going to be better than a $300 Abu.

I think you should start with one for reels and another one for rods. I don't think you need to really do "pros & cons" but maybe just some features of each reel. Maybe organize it by price range and do like 5 reels in each price bracket ($30-$50, $60-$100, $100-$150 for spinning reels).

Lures are really too much to get into as far as comparing brands, unless yoi want to make a chart saying how to rig them and fish them, like spinners, poppers, diving cranks, etc.

>>742892
Have you actually gotten to the lake with that thing yet?
>>
>>742889
yea colors keep stumping me on some of them. the go to's are pumpkin green, watermelon and purple. but then you have those stupid flakes that are pointless. Still I'm almost done my list of basic lures, will post at somepoint, and we can work this out.
>>
>>742898
>I think you should start with one for reels and another one for rods
Good idea. I'll see how the space if I do it and if it needs to be separate or it'll work.

>price range
Also good. There's just so many different reels it's hard to narrow it down.

As far as lures I wasn't really going to go into brands, just types of lures, how to rig them, and how to fish them.
>>
>>742905
>>742898
And where to fish the lures, like what structures to look for and stuff.

>>742904
Yeah I don't think the flakes make THAT much of a difference. I was just gonna say black for muddy water, dark for stained, really any color for moderately stained/clear water, then natural colors for clear water.
>>
>>742905
I mean I would just to the main ones. Maybe mention a store brand from Bass Pro and Cabela's in there since they are worthwhile competitors now.

And not like you really have to delve into the sizes or anything. All of them have similar sizes. I mean if it's going to be a sticky type deal, you could keep rods and reels <$100 since anybody dropping more than that and the buyer probably knows what they are looking for. And I wouldn't even worry about getting into memecasters for a bit for the same reason as $200 spinning reels.

At least that's how I would do it. If you kept it <$100, you could probably do 20 reels, maybe 25, and cover almost everything worthwhile. That would cover one ~$40 reel and one ~$80 reel from each of the major companies. And if you do it like a chart or spreadsheet deal, you can have boxes for bearings/type, sizes and line capacity, materials, and extra features.

Rods would probaby be an even smaller chart keeping it <$100, maybe closer to 15 that you can find most places.
>>
>>742908
>where to fish the lures
Definitely. Season, weather, water conditions, time of day, species that will bite em. That sounds like a fun and really useful one.

I would like to see the lure one covering all the basic lure categories, then spinning reels and rods <$100. Put that in a Pastebin or Imgur or whatever and we could link it in every OP.

>>742914
Damn that's a cool idea.

>>742905
Want to start compiling a list of reels and rods <$100 for this? I'm gonna throw in a few I can think of right now. And I think besides the couple store brand rods/reels, we should do popular ones that are available at almost any major retailer.

>Reels
Shimano Sienna & Sedona, Abu Garcia Cardinal SX and Orra(?), Pflueger President and maybe a cheaper one like the Triton, Daiwa Laguna, Okuma Stratus V... I will look more into that tomorrow since my alarm will be going off in 4hrs.

>Rods
SHAKESPEARE UGLY STIK, Shimano Sellus, St. Croix Triumph, Abu Vendetta and I think Vengeance is the cheaper one, Fenwick Eagle, Berkley Lightning Rod (Shock), and then Bass Pro does the Graphite Series I believe for $40 and the Bionic Blade (may have changed/disco'd) for around $80.

Those are just a few I think should be included in the list.

And for the rods, I think the categories should be sizes, weights, actions, handle type, blank material if applicable, guide type, and I'm sure more.

If I had and were profficient in a program to do this, I would totally get on it. But like I said, it took forever just to make that Bass infographic deal look OK with these mobile apps.

I've got a super ugly looking list with just popular items I've found and put on a possible shopping list:

senkos worms (4”-5”)- watermelon(red/black flake) and greenpupmkin (watermelon flaked or not)
Finnesse worms and Zoom trick worms
Zoom lizards (chartreuse)
hula popper
weedless frog (bullfrog color)
mepp spinners (black fury)
spinner bait- (chartruese and white w/ gold blade)
brush hog- (green pumpkin)
speed craw (blue or green pumpkin)
crankbait- (shad/ XPS tri-vibe)
booyah jig- (black and blue)
red devil - (red spoon w/ white stripe)
Misc- Heddon super hook and Gamakatsu work hook, powerpro braided.
Knots to know: clinch and pallomar

now things I'm not that familiar with:
rooster tails, rattle traps, football jigs - IDK colors

and that's about it for the general stuff i have. This is from a relative new guy trying to come back into fishing after all these years. Advice, tips, critique?
>>
>>742885
I do think that Shimano and Daiwa are well established brands. I like that their reels are consistent and are often used as benchmarks for other reels.
With manufacturers like Abu and Lew's, they outsource manufacturing. That's not to say that a reel made in Korea is worse than a reel made in Japan or Malaysia. They spend time perfecting one frame, and then use that one frame for a wide range of products to match different price brackets. I find it hard to justify spending a lot of money on a product with the same frame, materials and technology as a lower tier model. Try palming a Revo STX for example, and then a Revo SX. It should be very similar.
>Plus it's kinda hard to compare one reel over another unless somebody has owned and used every single one extensively
That's true. Unless you're Cal from tackletour, your probably not qualified to make an assertion that one reel is better than another. The reason why I didn't put a lot of higher end Abu reels is because the lower end models offer similar performance and the features added as you go up the ladder don't add up to much. With Shimano and Daiwa, frames change, line guides change, gear size and materials change, bearings change etc.
Also, Abu could be offering more to the american angler. They have a wide assortment of awesome gear made specifically for the japanese market that would be awesome for us, like the Revo LT. Anyways, the revo lineup is due for a refresh anytime soon, so I'll update the chart once reviews come out and I get my hands on one.
>>
>>742926
>>742922
For the reels, the Orra S is the good one for that chart at $70. Lew's Lazer Speed seems to be a popular one for <$50, and then there's also the Penn Fierce II reels for $70-$80. Pflueger Purist as well for another one around that $70-$80 range.

Anybody have an idea for a Daiwa around that $75 range that is popular and sold most places? I know that Excelcer is sold lots of places but I always see that in 3500 and 4000 sizes so it is pretty big. And the Laguna should def be on there but that is also a $40 reel and I think we need Daiwa represented with a more expensive one too.

Also, need another Okuma that is popular and sold most places, maybe 2 so we can have one around $40 and one around $80. The Stratus is actually a Dick's only reel but still pretty easy to find since the US has a ton of Dick's stores.

There are like 10 Shimanos for <$100, but I think we should keep it to 2-3 reels from each make just for the sake of simplicity and being able to read the final product.

If anyone else has input I'll gladly take it. I don't have that much experience with different rods and reels, so if there's one you guys like in the >$100 range let me know.

I guess I'll start tripping for the purpose of this infographic thing I've taken on.

>>742934
So this is a shopping list for youself?

Either way, Rooster Tails are the same as Mepps pretty much. And Black Furies are good for dark and real murky water, but if you own one Mepps, I would do an Agila with a gold blade and brown skirt. The yellow and black Black Fury is great though, but better for specific conditions.

Your Booyah jig is a football jig just to get that out of the way. You got the baitholder hooks, but I think you should add a pack of Zoom SuperFluke Jr's in there. Also bullet weights for dem Texas rigs.

You have a pic of that XPS crankbait? Does it have a lip? Otherwise it could be just like a rattle trap. If it is lipless, I would add a deep diving crank and a Rapala-type floating crank that dives shallow.

You got a nice lil list going there though.

Pic related. I could refute everything you posted, but it will be like a political argument where nobody will change their minds. If Abu didn't make nice baitcasters in the same price brackets as Shimanos, they wouldn't be in business. I wouldn't hesitate to buy most Shimano and Daiwa stuff if it fit my needs, but there is worthy competition out there.

>>742950
If it's lipless and kinda flat on a vertical plant, I'm sure it's a "Lipless Rattling Sinking Crank" kinda like I posted earlier. There are a bunch of different types though.

Anything that looks like a "Rat-L-Trap" wth that kinda flat on a vertical plane body is normally going to be sinking and rattling and will wobble through the water. The big, bulbous cranks that are almost kidney shaped will float when not moving, but then dive when you reel. If they have a longer lip, they dive deeper. The ones with the square lip only dive a couple feet. Then there are the more long torpedo looking ones like typical Rapalas. Most of these will float and dive shallow when cranked. Lots of them are suspending though, so they will sit a couple feet under the surface. Maybe I will post a pic in a minute.

Huh neat thanks, had no idea. Overall would you say this is a good list to start out with to get the basics of what one needs in their fishing kit? adding the weights that is. Idk the specific names/brand types of the various cranks you mentioned yet so I can add them.

Yeah I'm probably letting my personal feelings get into it. Maybe it's because shimano and daiwa have that pedigree marketing and feel.
I just want to get the last word in on the pic tho. Shimano owns that malaysia plant, whereas the facility that Abu uses for the revos are also used by Pflueger and Lew's reels.

Yeah, the list looks bretty good. You def need some 1/4oz bullet weights and I would grab something like the Zoom flukes. A Rapala or two wouldn't hurt. Original and/or Husky Jerk.

So pic related is pretty much 2 of each of the main types of cranks that you will see. Top left are regular diving cranks. I think those will normally run like 6'-10' deep depending on how fast you reel and line and all that shit and then they float to the top when you stop reeling. Top middle is squarebill cranks, they float when not moving but will normally dive 3'-5' when cranked. Top right are the lipless rattlers. They sink when not being reeled, so you keep em suspended by reeling them in and they normally wobble a bit too.

Bottom left is going to be a suspending jerkbait. They dive slightly when reeled, and they just suspend when you stop reeling them. Rapala Husky Jerks and X-Raps are a couple types of these lures.

Bottom middle are floating and shallow diving cranks. The top one is a Bass Pro brand I think and the bottom is an "Original" Rapala. They look real similar to the suspending jerkbaits, but most of the time you see that body shape, it will be floating and shallow diving unless the package specifically says "Suspending" or something similar. Those are a great lure. You crank it a few times, let it stop and suspend a could feet under water, twitch it a couple times, and the fish love to hit them on that pause or as soon as you start moving them after the pause.

And finally, bottom right are some real deep divers. They will normally float when not being reeled, but will shoot down to 8'+ as soon as you start cranking them in.

Hope that helps explain it a bit.

This helps a ton! Thanks so much!
Only clarification- if possible with jerkbait/crankbait go for the suspending option when possible? Also thanks a ton for dropping the names, helps a lot!

>suspending vs floating/diving
Idk man, I have a bunch of each. I guess it decides on the situation. That's basically Original Floating Rapala vs Rapala Husky Jerk. If you want to run really shallow and keep it above the weeds that are 2' under the surface, than the Original Floating is a good choice. Husky Jerks will normally run a few feet deeper. I probably use Husky Jerks more often. If I can run a lure 3'-4' deep without getting hung up on a bunch of suff, I would use the suspending Husky Jerk. If you get one, maybe Youtube ot Google the technique for fishing them. They wobble a bit on their own, but that little pause when using Husky Jerks is a great move.

There is also the X-Rap which is a newer line of Rapalas that acts kinda like the Husky Jerks. They are a little pricey around $10ea, but I have been loving the action and color combos lately. Pic related is one of my favorite lures. I have 3 different sizes of the same X-Rap because I have had such good luck with it.

Pepsi guy

What exactly do you want done to that pic of the four feathery hooks?

I can edit shit for ya - i am feeling disturbingly altruistic right now.

Thanks a ton man, I'll explore some more on the subject. Defintley search up the techniques to see them in action.

I think I'm ok with it now, I finally found an editing app and a process that made it turn out halfway decent (I think). I was really having trouble earlier getting the text at the bottom to not look like shit.

No problem mang. And there are plenty other brands to choose from but Rapala is one of the standby's and they carry a ton of them everywhere.

Feel free to post and ask about brands and stuff too. I'm always down with Yo-Zuri stuff and Strike King makes some nice lures too. And if you want to do it on a budget or don't feel like snagging $50 worth of lures at that lake with a lot of branches underwater, you can always go with some cheaper stuff. The Bass Pro XPS brand honestly isn't bad at all, especially considering they are 50%-70% less than a lot of the major brands.

And as far as colors go with crankbaits, gold and silver are my #1 choice in most situations. 2nd choice for color would be "firetiger" aka the bright green with orange, yellow, and normally black stripes. Always worth having some stuff in firetiger for murky water or cloudy and darker days.

Nice to know, yea the lakes I'll be going to up north, I know one one of them is full of trees at the bottom, the other has the nastiest bottom I've ever had the misfortune of stepping on while swimming. Pure sinking sludge.
At least now I have an idea of what to look for when I go to bass pro later this week to pick up my gear.

Pic related would be some of my go-to colors.

Top is just a nice silver shad with maybe a tiny bit of blue. Next is some gold shad, I think I do a little better with gold than anything else.

Middle is the firetiger. Every company will have stuff in firetiger colors. Next is normally gonna be called chartruese which is almost a flourescent yellow. Sometimes Rapala does a "Mustard" which is like one shade less bright than chartruese and works well. And bottom is going to be "Sexy Shad", lots of Strike King lures come in that color combo and it's a good one.

If you have some clear water and the fish are being picky, you can do a real natural bluegill or baby bass color too. Rapala also has a perch color that is popular as well as some trout color lures but I don't mess with perch or trout really since they aren't in lakes down here anyway.

It's way too late, I'm gonna be fucked tomorrow at work. Oh well.

Anyone know much about rainbow trout fishing in lakes?

Should I stay near the short or use my mini dingy raft to go near the middle?

Is it even going out on the lake if I dont plan to troll?

Well I appreciate the time you're taking with the posts. I've definetly learned a lot, so thanks! Hopefully tomorrow, with the list guy we can refine and compile something worth stickying!
Then the real challenge of seeing how much I can get of it on a budget the following day begins haha,

Keep an eye out for sales too, especially since you are just building up a collection so you don't have to be super picky. If you have a Gander Mtn nearby, they may still have some good clearance shit. The one by me had a ton of disco'd stuff after the holidays and they may still have a couple bins. All the Dick's nearby reset their fishing sections a month or two ago and they have had a lot of stuff on clearance too. Dick's has some good sales on lures from time to time as well.

Walmart and other big department stores will have random clearance bins with fishing stuff too so I always take a look when I'm at a store like that. I know Mainebub killed it with clearance stuff at Marden's a few weeks ago.

Most of the time I'm at Bass Pro, I end up paying full price for most things. They had 20% off Zoom baits over the weekend though so I guess that's ok. I go to Bass Pro when I want to be really picky about lures.

And if you do Bass Pro or Dick's, make sure to sign up for the rewards program. Dick's will send you a $10 off coupon right after you sign up and then you get $10 in credit for every $300 spent. Bass Pro's adds up after awhile but not as good as Dick's. Probably ends up at around 2% unless you really take advantage of the double and triple points purchases.

Do people still update this?

http://out-fishing-general.wikia.com/wiki//out/_Fishing_General_Wikia

I ask because you mentioned you were going to make a sticky post for these threads. I would love to see whatever image/pastebin you come up with.

I don't go on there. If we do a pastebin, we can just post a link in the OP.

And other TX anon is gonna make the litte tables for rods and reels I believe. I'm excited for that. I would do it if I was on that NEET status and could into computers.
