Is it possible to light a charcoal grill using just some dried leaves and twigs? I would prefer to not use lighter fluid if possible and would like to avoid purchasing anything like a starter chimney if possible.
Yes, but it may take awhile. I've done it with cardboard, I made a pyramid of the charcoal and then stuffed some thin cardboard strips under the grate. For sticks you should probably get a little fire going then add the coal.
Yes, i use some paper and fatwood
Just use a fucking propane torch.
Why does /out/ have to make everything so complicated?
i always just use newspaper and kindling, nothing bigger than thumb sized. not that difficult, tastes better and coals burn more evenly..

better watch out or summerfag will come in here ranting about your meat eating ways

They make those charcoal starter things that are basically a hobo stone with a handle on it. They'll get a grill full of charcoal going with just a couple pages of news paper.
Put the charcoals in your grill, then create 2-3 little holes, take paper towel, dip it in some oil, light it and put it in this holes, then cover them but not too much, so the charcoals around this hole will burn. like 4-5 minuets later get a hair fan/a plastic plate or something and air it, strongly, it should work.

Grills aren't just good for meat, anon.

not that guy, but if you get a simple torch tip, you can attach it to any camping propane canister as well
but any properly made fire will be fine

don't be pedantic; obviously the vast majority of grilling activity includes meat

I would put money that the percentage of *charcoal* grill owners who are strictly vegetarian is pretty goddamn low
>>800704
Oh yeah, I do it all the time since I ran out of lighter fluid one night.
Tastes way better. Not like toxic chemicals.

this
Threads/fittings for the green 1lb propane bottles are the same as the blue utility torch bottles. Neither one's more than $5.
The trigger-start head will set you back $20-30. Cheaper ones without the trigger aren't worth the hassle. They last about ever.
Little butane ones won't start charcoal very easy. Propane works nicely. MAPP works well too.

>nevermind why I tucked my torch in bed
> Using store bought chemically aoaked charcoal instead burning down real wood to coals.
You fuckin wot op

I tried this the other day, but also used a whole can of zippo fluid. Took 1.5 hours to take flame (family dollar charcoal)
You are probably fine if you use better charcoal, but go buy starter fluid if you have cheap shit.
That shit threw me off wanting to grill for this month.
You are going to have a pretty bad time though op.

Why go outside, just stay in your fucking house.
Why does /out/ have to make everything so complicated?
>>801215
Why do you need any kind of chemicals? Newspapers, cardboard and light stick aren't enough?

> butane ones won't start very easily
Dude, wut?

I resent that...
there's plenty of ways of setting fires, been doing it for years
>>800848
just as an aside FYI, those hobo stove/charcoal starter chimney things burn really hot and are godly for searing steak or tuna or similar.
>>800704
>avoid purchasing anything like a starter chimney
Why?
Chimney starters and literally GOAT tier and any serious griller owns one.

The little pencil-torches and "micro torches" won't. Something like your pic is fine, but at that point you might as well just get a propane torch.
>>802591
The micro torches work fine if you got dry tinder, just need to carry around a tiny tinderbag (which you should have anyway) in case it is raining.
Those solid fuel cubes work fine if you don't want to get newspaper and twigs
They stock 'em near the charcoals in stores

Dump the charcoal on the coals from a wood fire. That's the way I was taught.
