#59-"Late Nite Special" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>797249

It's way past my bedtime. At least I got out and caught a couple largemouth today. I'm convinced it would've been more if it weren't for the damn wind. Feeling bites and setting the hook on the Texas rigs with wind blowing from the side is difficult. And fishing a lighter finesse Texas rig or shakey head is almost impossible with the wind. Such is Florida.

Sprayed Grass might be the best Zoom color after Chartruese Pepper. In green-tinted water, the Sprayed Grass color seems to kill it whether it is the worms or the brush hogs.

Dog I bet you can buy a baby catfish. Maybe that Furry that does the hatchery work can get you one of his people's extras, I doubt they really count each individual fish, probably just do it by weight idk.

Hey hey hey I am not the furry, skid is
And we only do catfish stocking once a year, all out catfish come in from out of state,
And we do count each individual fish when loading trucks in the morning
1800-2100 fish per truck ( normal size fish)
And 3-5 trucks going out a day

But mean if he wants a catfish I could send him one in the mail, I've got a spit I can catch a bunch at,

>smoking pot
A bowl is pretty nice every once in awhile out on the lake. I wouldn't do it with a bunch of other people around though.

>>798925
That fish is really cool looking. I've never seen one with a color like that.
>>
>>799069
While the littering and noise bothered me most they shouldn't be smoking in a public place with kids around,
There's a ballfield literally a minute walk from it
Good thing the police check the parking lot for unregistered cars and tow them and kick people out
It hasn't been that big of an issue(it used to be way worse) but someone must have called today
Probably the old lady walking her corgi who avoided them and brought her dog over twords where I was fishing so it could cool off

They barley spoke a lick of English as well

Though one of them was alright and told me he liked fishing too
>>

Guy asking about shore fishing from before:

Should I use a shock leader for fishing lures as well as bait rigs?

How should I rig up a shock leader?
>>
>>799079
albriggt knot to main line, use enough shock leader to run around the spool 2-8 times, down tgw rod and out the tip 2-4 ft
>>
>>799087
Alright

Anything to look for in particular while I'm on shore?

Should I try fishing some inlets or something if I can get to them?

Rod is 9' MH
>>
>>799091
I only run a shock leader when throwing heavy weights (usually only cut bait)

I focus on throwing topwater when I see fish and bait on the surface

When ride is outgoing try to find a spot like a salt pond, breachway or small river etc that will pull bait fish out, with the tide

Then is a good chance to throw soft plastic swimbaits and jerkbaits etc into the outflowing water

Dont Be afraid to ask everyone else who's fishing there what they're catching them on

Where will you be fishing ?
I'm by no means an expert saltwater fisherman but I know a bit

When you get good at it you can read the waves and shit seeing disturbances caused by rocks, or sandbars etc
Also if you see bait fish, or birds there is usually a good spot to throw lures etc
>>
>>799079
Depends
If you're doing mono to mono or mono to flouro do an Albright or double uni
If you're doing braid to mono or braid to flouro do an FG knot

And that's up to you depending on weight, how hard your casting, etc. I'd say for one ounce or less 20 pound flouro will be fine, if you're gently tossing it, 20 pound flouro should work for up to two ounces, but if you're heaving it with all you've got I'd use a shock above 2 ounces
>>
>>799097 i often throw 2-3 ounces pretty hard with normal 2 ft leader(20 lb mono)
but i trust ,my knots
>>
>>799091
Look for birds
Birds mean fish
If you see a dark spot moving along the beach that is provably a baitball
Fish it
I've ran a mile trying to catch up to one before
They're worth chasing down

If there are no birds or baitballs look for rip currents; fish Will hold near those right behind the sand bar looking for disoriented bait fish being dragged out to sea
If you look at a depth chart and see any holes or high spots, fish those
>>
>>799100
My rule of thumb is 20 pound minimum; 10 pounds per ounce up to 80 pound test
So
20 up to 2 ounces
30 for 3
40 for 4
50 for 5-7 ounces
80 for 8+ ounces

If I'm running lures I don't go over 30 unless I'm after blues

>littering and noise
Reeeeee. I'll put up with most other bs, but littering and noise are the worst.

And yeah I pretty much only smoke out on the yak or when I'm in a secluded space. I would judge someone who was doing it with a bunch of kids around.
>>
>>799104
i throw 2-3 ounce kastmasters and plugs on 20 mono, leaders,
though i dont normally throw more than that
>>
>>799110
I would be really nervous doing it
I'm content with throwing 2 oz on 20 mono but I'd rather have 25-30 for 3 ounces
>>
>>799102
Is there such thing as too much bait?

This morning, I don't see just a ball, but the whole mile of the coast was darken by anchovies. I think that all of the predators would be full and the chance of my lure getting hit was slim to none.
>>
>>799112
im not, had the bail slam shut on a hard cast w/ 3 ounces and all was fine
though thats my chance
>>
>>799095
Probably the surf at the southern beaches here in NC
Will try to get to some other places if I can but it's just a weekend trip with a friend we're gonna camp out on the beach

I'm a bass angler so lures are my bread and butter but I'm sure I'll just want to chuck out a line with some bait on it then kick back and drink some beers rather be active fishing the whole time

>>799097
I'm gonna go with the 17# braid you recommended for my main line and mono leader for lures, fluoro for bait

Do I need to do a shock leader for lures too or just when I'm tossing out some cut bait?
>>
>>799102
Yeah I've heard about looking for holes and birds being a good sign
Didn't know about the rip currents though

Won't be going down there for about another month so I'm gonna try to learn all I can before then

I'd really like my first surf fishing experience to be productive

I'd love to catch a shark but if I can get some bluefish I'll be really happy too
>>
>>799114
Yeah I'd say that's too much bait
Get out there with a cast net though
Net them and do two things with them
Bag and freeze some of them
And others take a gallon bucket, oil it, put sand and rocks in the bottom, then a layer of masserated anchovies, then more sand, anchovies, sand, etc until you've got a horrid layer cake of sand and fish
Put a little water in there and freeze it
Wrap that one in plastic wrap then make another. If the fishing is tough throw one of those into the surf to bring in fish.

>>799130
>#17 braid
I think you mean #50?
I don't think you'll regret it.
And If you have a good bass rod with some #20 braid (at least 150 yards) bring that
Make the surf rod your bait rod and the bass rod your lure rod (up to an ounce)
>>
>>799102
>I've ran a mile trying to catch up to one before

Sure you did, fatass.
>>
>>799153
This was a few years ago back when I used to wrestle
>>
>>799141
In the last thread you said to go with 17# hi vis suffix or 50# power pro for the main line

I also have a cast net that I used to catch tons of shrimp in the marshes last time I was down that way so i figure I can use that if I see any schools of baitfish swimming around

I also have three pyramid traps that I caught tons of blue crab with using a mullet that I got in the cast net and cut up for the traps but I don't think those will be any good in the surf as I only set those in the marsh before

NIBBLESWORTH IS THAT YOU?1 TOO DRUNK TO TELL
>>
>>799157
Suffix tritanium is mono
Not braid
But yeah a cast net is handy
If you can catch what the fish are feeding on you're more likely to get the Fish. Definately bring the cast net. Though remember you could always put some 17 pound tritanium then top it off with some 20 pound braid. You'll get more casting distance That way, and more sensitivity.

Keep it alive overnight, sober up, and check him out in the morning
>>
>>799163
You caught bis goddammit ass. I'm drink with you too but I'm happy you caught his ass

>>
>>799157
Oh the high vis is only really important if you will be fishing at night or in low light (makes it easier to track fish and see where your line is) but if you only fish in the day clear is fine. I fish night a lot so I do high viz.
>>
>>799165
I'll spool it up with suffix then for more casting distance as 9' is a little short for surf casting no?

>>799169
I'll get the hi vis since I'll be using leaders anyway
Not expecting many swimmers or kayakers around but it could help them see the line too and avoid it so they don't fuck my shit up
>>

I call him El presidente grande cat. He's from Australia
>>
>>799172
Well you'll want to spool it half way with the suffix then the other half with #20 power pro for more casting distance
If you go to a bait shop they should be able to do that for you or you could do it yourself.
>>
>>799178
Suffix on first I'm assuming?

I'll just do it myself
>>
>>799182
Yeah. Put on the suffix, then top it off with braid.
So spool it maybe 3/4 of the way with suffix then get a 150 yard spool of high vis 20 pound power pro and finish spoiling with that.

It has multiple purposes
>separates hook from lure body so the fish can't use the lure as leverage to throw it off when doing head dances

There must be a reason why bass fishing is so popular.

I'm just a fan of the lure selection and different techniques. If I'm going to sit at a pond with a hook and bobber, I would rather just do saltwater.

Yes.

But this will only get you the basics, though. I've been fishing for decades and whenever I get to a new body of water, I still ask locals what's biting, what kind of presentation works bets, etc.

Knowing how to fish is only half the battle. The real trick is figuring out how to consistently catch your target species of fish in a variety of conditions.

So usually all I do is fly fish fresh water and occasionally fish on my buddy's boat on the great lakes, but I'm headed to the CNMI and Guam for a few months. Any tips? What sort of tackle should I bring out? I'd like to mostly fish artificials but I'll run bait too.

Check out some forums specific to fishing that area and get in touch with some anglers there and ask them what to get if you can

Definitely buy before you go though cause everything there is significantly more expensive as is shipping anything there due to it being in the middle of the ocean

So what's the best way to slaughter a fish humanely for eating? I just did it for my first time while camping, I gave a 10"ish yellow perch a bop on the head with a maglite and it immediately stopped moving and bled out from its gills and from all outside appearances died instantly

Did I do it right? I imagine some fish have bigger skulls

The perch filets were delicious cooked over an open fire by the way

Took a friend out fishing for his first time, he caught a few white bass worth keeping and a few perch. Was jealous as fuck because I only caught 1 baby white bass my first time fishing. Im glad though, since he caught so much he's interested in going again. He also wants to buy one of my cheap rods.

That makes me wonder, when you went fishing for your first time what did you catch? How many fish in all did you catch?
>>

Too young to remember, I'm guessing nothing. One of the first I can remember was a sheep's head I caught while out with my friend and his dad. First fish I caught alone was a bluegill.

I think my first few times fishing were at a lake house my grandma used to own in Michigan. I had a lime green Zebco setup and used to get sunfish on the dock. I'm suprised I remember that considering she sold the place when I was probably 5 or 6 and I don't remember shit from age 15-23.

Pic is little bro the first time he ever went fishing.

For maximum freshness and to reduce possible spoilage keep it alive until you're done fishing.
When I'm done fishing I clean it and take it home to freeze it (I don't live far from my fishing spots so I don't carry a cooler and ice).

I feel ya. I want to buy both of them. I was actually looking at that Sabalos at Dick's the other day and it looks gud. But now I want another memecaster. Plus they always have the Flash Sales on Thursdays when I'm looking at my checking account and regretting what I spent the past week. >>800269

>>
>>800266
90% of fish live in 10% of the river. You're probably just fishing in the wrong places. Weedy cover should hold bass and pike. If that isn't around then look for areas of slack water behind obstructions in the current
>>
>>800291
How is that baitcaster?

And I wish they did more than just the reels. They did tackle bags once with the flash sale but they were all 20% or 25% off so it wasn't anything great. Some of those Wright & McGill rods are supposed to be nice too but they don't have those on the flash sales.
>>
>>800294
It's pretty good. Cast decent and the drag seems fairly smooth. It still feels solid. I think it'll last a good while.

You should get down on some Texas rigged stuff. Maybe the water is getting warm and bass and pike are being lazy. They won't want to chase spinners and cranks like what happens down here. Get yourself some worm hooks, some bullet weights, and some soft plastics like "baby brush hogs" and maybe the bass will like that. Not sure about the pike.

Essentially to give all bass a chance to spawn and protect their egg beds through the spring (thaw is earlier in southern ON and later north obviously) if we didn't have seasons for bass here the Vietnamese would literally wipe out the entire population.

>>800474
Your brothers pretty stupid but oh well he made the choice. Honestly if you're going to do it you have to be smart about it like not fishing a texas rigged worm and say throw an inline spinner or spoon or crank... at least then you can say you're looking for trout or something.

CO's have been known to video tape people fishing from far away hidden in the bush and if you're catching bass out of season repeatedly in one spot(obviously on purpose) then you're getting a fine for each fish they see you reel in.

Spawning season nigga.

You also have to remember that bass grow slower and live longer in places with cold winters. In FL and TX, largemouth could grow to 4lbs in a couple years while a Canadian bass might take 5yrs+ to get the same size. Also the lifespan of a FL bass is <10yrs while the CAN bass will do 15+.

Not sure how a "Bass Season" really works tho since pre-spawn bass go for everything. My friend up north told me a few days ago that bass season was about to open in Northern WI.

Get a waterproof box for the battery and strap that down in the cockpit.

If you don't care about water temp you can put the trans inside and glue it.

Lightning Rods cost the same as Ugly Stiks and they are much better for fishing lures IMO. Ugly Stiks aren't bad for throwing heavy catfish rigs and stuff but I'm kinda over them.

The "Shock" Lightning Rod (the one made for braid) might be $50 at Gander Mtn, but Walmart carries them for $39 so make them price match and save $10.

Just found this little guy stuck in the middle of the lake with no energy to resist the current. Suprised a big pike didn't come up and crunch him.

Fuck it, got a st. Croix ultra light '5. Hope it lives up to its name as its my first st. Croix rod.

>mfw wanted to buy a cheap $30-40 rod and ended up spending more than twice that

I used my buddys St. Croix Avid X rod a couple weeks ago and the thing snapped in half on a 30 inch pike.... Luckily Gander replaced it because of how new it was but I dont think i could ever buy a St. Croix rod again. hope your luck is better then mine

>5'
Too short. I have a 5', 5'6", and 6' all with 10lb braid and the 6' is the best which is why I want to go the 7'+ route one or these days.

Yeah I'm sure there was no boat flipping or high sticking involved...

I genuinely did nothing that shouldn't be done with a rod. The pike shot under the boat and wrapped the line up on the bottom and as i was trying to get the tip around the side to the other side where the fish was it just put to much pressure on it i guess and it just snapped. everyone on the boat was in awe that it would broke like that

My friend has a big ass pond in his back yard about 5 acres but he claims there aren't any fish in it. Is there a way to find out besides just fishing it? It seems really hard for me to believe there isn't any.

Bass season opens up tomorrow here in my part of southern Ontario. I was talking to the conservation officer yesterday about it. Essentially they just don't want you targeting or taking bass. Obviously you can't control what takes your bait or lure they know that. As long as you immediately release a bass out of season then there will not be an issue but if they see you throwing a rigged plastic worm and reeling in bass after bass its obvious you're targeting them.

& you're right peps 4 & 5 pounders are big boys for our waters. We've got a pretty good trout and walleye fishery to make up for it though.

walk around the edge of it and see if you can see any small bait fish/minnows swimming around. Although the presence of the small fish doesn't exactly mean there are bigger fish in there but likely there is. try fishing with some worms and bobber or something

That looks like a place I pulled a 35 inch pike from
Where are you?

Just go out there on a warm afternoon when the bugs are out. If there are bluegill, they will be jumping at the bugs.

There's fish almost everywhere
