>Sun dolphin Aruba 12'

You could get the excursion 12' which is what I have. The walmart near me has them for $450, but their website says they're $550. So idk if that's a fault of my local walmart, or if they haven't updated the website. It already has 3 rod holders (two in the back and one up front). It might be something to look into.

As far as I can tell the aruba just isn't a "fishing" yak, but it's basically the same as the excursion. And I really like mine.

>>795874
I just a 5lb dumbbell and some para cord. I want to get some rope that doesn't stretch though.
>>
>>795874
I'm building that I've already got all I need
>Rebar
>1/4 inch steel plate
>1 inch solid steel rod
>Window weights
>Welding sticks
>welding machine
It will easily weigh 5 pounds
>>
>>795868
I can vouch for the crystal minnows. A couple weeks back me and three other guys went to the Canadian boarder for a trip, mostly going for walleyes. Very very slow. After trying ever technique in the book I was the the only one to catch any fish, and 6 of my 7 were on a 3.5" crystal minnow(1 walleye, 1 smallmouth and four northern pike). Then I lost it so I bought a few on eBay when I got back to civilization.
>>
>>795876
Does it have over 395 pound capacity?
>>
>>795879
It's capacity is 395.

It looks like the aruba has the rod holders in the back too, which I thought it didn't. The only difference between the two as far as I can tell is the colors and the rod holder in the front.
>>
>>795882
Yeah. The only other selling point is can I get it at six or gander mountain?
>>
>>795879
>395lbs
Thinkin about getting off that diet? It's good to plan for the future. You don't wanna outgrow that 325lb capacity 'yak.
>>
>>795893
Well once I've got a yak I'll be paddling constantly. I don't eat when I fish either. When I go to the obx all I bring with me is a gallon or two of water and I drop a lot of weight in two weeks.

Took abu garcia vengence out to fish in local river.

It was low tide though so I couldnt cast out far enough.

Couldn't see where the thing landed most of the time and when I reeled in so no line was in water it usually ended up getting sent back to me via waves.

Then when I got home noticed a ring of line loose on my reel. It got so tangled I lost a bunch of line having to cut it to get it out of the bottom of the reel. (It was tangled in the part of reel nothing should have been in.

Should I just rip all the line off and pay a sporting goods store to re rig it for me?

Should I start out in a pond?

Maybe instead of jig and grub I should just buy a baitfish bait or something like those little yellow things or worms and set up a bobber.

How do I set up a bobber thing for that?

Feeling pic related at the moment. Between fucking up and dealing with annoyance at current shit going on in USA with leftists trying to ban guns again I am having a bad week.

Ahh, you made it. Just replied to you in the old one. If you want to try live bait, pic related shows how to run bobbers. Otherwise get down on some heavier weights and google the "3-way river rig".

If you stick with lures, also check the youtube or google on how to fish em. Might want to read up on fishing rivers too. You want to look for structure or holes where the water isn't moving so fast. The predator fish will chill in the slow water and wait for baitfish to zoom past. You also always want to cast upstream with lures and fish them back downstream.

And here's the 3-way river rig I was talking about. You can easily do live nightcrawlers instead of minnows and all sorts of fish will hit those.

I'm the one that said it was shit.

>throw it anywhere that has current, lure tips over to the side and looses its action

>shitty hookup ratio, got hit several times by bluefish and only got 1

On the plus side it casts a mile and the action is great when the water is calm. It's not worth the price.

Were you fishing the jighead with a bobber or what? Did you put a grub or something on there?

Jigheads are normally no bobber, put some sort of soft plastic on there like a curly tail grub or little minnow, cast out, and swim it back to you. You can do it at a medium speed, or real slow and bounce it off the bottom, a bunch of ways. Youtube and Google are your friends. And learn the good spots to fish (especially in rivers) and cast upstream as possible.

I still think you should grab a Rooster Tail or Mepps just because they are super easy to fish with and catch tons.

>Lure fishing in lakes is too much fun

I don't know why people think pier fishing is just throwing some frozen bait on a hook and letting it sit for hours. Most of the fish I have caught off the pier have been with doc's goofy jigs, gotcha plugs and other lures. I have lost track of how many blues and spanish mackerels I've caught with this plain old rat-l-trap that you probably have sitting in your tacklebox right now. Lures are incredibly effective at the pier, especially at dawn and dusk.

dont know where you are but you dont need to register it unless it has a motor.

those sun dolphins are made really cheap. thin plastic hull. And if youre a bigger guy a SINK will be a pain in the ass for you. a SOT is really what you should be looking for but its understandable if you live in a cold climate.
Do you have craigslist in your town? Lots of deals to be had there.

trailer...harbor freight cheap fold up trailer. add ply wood and some tie downs and your set. What is a swivel hitch? do you mean a ball hitch?
try the kiss method and dont over complicate your yak. take it out without any of the shit on it and fish then figure out what you need. A crate works well with SOT's not so well in sit ins so you might try to figure storage options that work in tight spaces.

You also forgot your most important purchase to make and thats your PFD.
Watched a grown man have a complete meltdown on the beach when they pulled his dead teen aged son from the water who capsized in the kelp and wasnt wearing his pfd..I told myself that day that I dont care how much they cost im getting a good one. you should too.

I feel retarded atm.

I am not sure if i'm just having a bad week or what.

I am having issues even with the most basic things. I felt pretty stupid just casting out and reeling in my lure over and over today because I couldn't really even see where it was after it landed.

I think I may aim a bit lower than rivers for now and look for a pond.

Are books like "Fishing for dummies" at all decent?

I had so much fun last night watching 1 rod 1 reel videos and niggas on the river a few weeks ago but I keep fucking everything up.

Are there any channels you know of that go more basic than that but don't look like something trying to sell you a 20 disc dvd set?
>>
>>796021
>Are books like "Fishing for dummies" at all decent?
Yes those are great for beginners cause they'll have all the basic knots, give the rundown on the basics when it comes to tackle, and teach you about what to look for when fishing a lake and where the fish are likely to be given the time of day and year. They also usually cover the typical species and how they feed, what to catch them on, etc
>>
>>796021
Don't worry about being able to see your lure. I can't see my lures 95% of the time when I'm fishing. You may need to focus on where you're throwing it though. Look for cover. If you just throw it out into the middle of the river you probably won't catch much.

>>796020
If using mono it's fine. I wouldn't trust it with braid.
>>
>>796019

I did not wet the line first. Was that a big fuck up on my part?
>>
>>796025

It's never a bad idea to wet your knots before you cinch them tight.
>>
>>796025
That's probably your problem. When you pull the knot tight, it creates friction, which can weaken the knot. I just put the knot in my mouth and make sure some spit gets on it before I tighten it.
>>

From what i have read and experienced personally, palomar knot is preferred because it is both fast and reliable. In this chart you can see the palomar knot compared with various other knots on various different 20 lb mono line. For almost every line brand, the palomar outclasses the improved clinch knot.

Other knots are better, but it depends on the line you're using too.

Last Wednesday, I hit Loch Raven reservoir, in MD. In three hours, me and a friend caught two Bluegill and a Yellow Perch.

Slimy as hell, and took at least two hours to clean and fillet. We blame the really tiny scales.

I may do it again this week, but first I'm gonna have to buy some new gear. My friend lost three hooks and three weights.

2 is nice if you want to get smaller sunfish or crappie

This pleases me.

How organized do you guys keep your tackle boxes? I reorganized mine so what I use most is in the top level and I ended up with empty spaces by combining stuff like swivels. Time to go shopping.
>>
>>796123
You can tie them directly or use a snap swivel. Most people use snap swivels because it lets you change the lures out quickly, the key to catching fish is switching it up until you find what they're biting on.
>>
>>796129
I only use snaps with cranks. Everything else I tie direct. Sometimes if I'm lazy or don't have a lot of time I'll use a snap on everything, but it definitely will fuck up the action on some lures.

There is a bunch of stuff in that price range that will be nice. If it were me, I would probably have a hard time deciding between one of those St. Croix Mojo Bass rods or an Abu Garcia Veracity. The Mojo Bass rods come in a bunch of different actions so you could look for one that will handle the weight of tossing heavy catfish rigs.

You are probably better off asking the customers there. Most Dick's, the guys working in that section are just some random retail manager or a paintballer. If you're lucky, it might be a kid who kinda knows the area. I end up giving those kids working there tips on stuff.

my line's going all curly again.

i feel like i've changed my line every 3 weeks or something. This time I just took the spool out of the reel and put it in some hot water. That's usually what I do when I first spool the line on the reel so maybe it will fix the curls/twist without me having to change line for 10 minutes

Hey guys, sorry to be a bother, but In a few days, I'm about to go on a trip with my family down to the shore at montauk, long island, and we were thinking of doing shore fishing or fishing from one of the piers/rock formations. However, the only equipment I have is suited for freshwater.

Are there any kind of strategies I can use or equipment I should buy without having to actually go out and buy a saltwater rod?
>>
>>796512
I was looking at a 12 footer from dix
That's also why I'm going for a sit in
Its hard to go down in a sit in without going entirely over
I've seen people washed off of sit n tops 10 feet from shore. Once you're past the breakers you're good but if you've ever gone down in the 3 foot water with 5 foot waves you're pretty fucked. Rods will be broken, you'll be slammed into and dragged across the bottom, etc. What my uncle does is find a rip and launch there, then race to the side as soon as he's past the breakers; then he surf's a wave in to shore. He has a buddy on land to grab the front of his yak and they both walk it on to shore. I'm sure if I just tie a short rope to the front I could just get shallow, jump out, and walk it in. But any advice is appreciated.

Skid, youre going to want a sit on top, especially if you plan on doing anything that may have you flip , once a sit in flips, you arent getting back in it, and if you do it will be full of water ( i know from first hand experience, i flipped a sit in, Almost drowned, and had to abandon the kayak in the river ( luckily my buddy grabbed it ) , it would hae been impossible to get back in, Meanwhile my sit on top i often jump out of it to cool down, and climb back on etc, It wont ever sink , Il go off of it, But il always be able to get back ontop of it

Do you have a heavier catfish rod? You may not be going for 30lb+ fish so a heavy bass combo could work. I have a 7' Ugly Stik combo that I bought to bring to the pier. Put 40lb braid on it too so I figure I could haul most of the stuff I catch up the side of the pier. Only problem is it doesn't handle super heavy weight the best and isn't long enough for those giant casts like a surf rod.

tl;dr: use your heaviest freshwater combo and maybe just put some 30lb-40lb braid on there.

>>796546
Go out there with a bobber and some small worms or waxworms so he can at least catch some sunfish or little bass the first time out.

I brought my lil bro out for the first time like last summer. He caught on real quick and ended up getting this little largemouth while I got skunked. He was into it for a minute but has been too busy lately to go fishing much lately. At least he knows how to do everything himself now.

Noice. Dick's had the micro guide casting Veracity rods for $100 or $120 on clearance awhile back and I was real tempted. But I knew if I got that rod, I would need a nice reel to match and I didn't want to drop $350 on a combo then.

I got a spinning one. Got a pflueger president. Would you say that's good enough or should I get a supreme or something else?
>>
>>796651
You can spend as much money as you want and get a nicer and nicer reel. But you really can't go wrong with a President. Once you start going higher in the price range, it's pretty much just going to get you more exotic materials like "Magnesium this" and "Carbon Fiber that".

hmm that could be tricky Liz. even in New England (where it's from) it's kind of a novelty these days that can be tough to find. i have a friend in TN whose grandmother is from MA and she brings a case down every year for christmas and that's the only way they can get it. you might have to order it online if you'r really dedicated. it's a little like dr. pepper but not as sweet, and has a rooty medicine-like flavor as well... almost a root beer, almost a dr pepper, almost a robitussin. like everything it's made with co'n syrup instead of cane sugar now but every few years they do a limited release of cane sugar glass bottles - if you're gonna bother trying to source it THAT'S the one you want. i fucking love it, but it's a grown-up flavor, you might not like it.

that's actually not a bad price, even with the shipping they're gonna nail you with. it's not a mass-produced soda to begin with, and if you're buying 12 of the limited glass/sugar bottles you're only gonna get raped an extra dollar per bottle than if you grabbed off a NH grocery store shelf

No way to sit in, But bringing waiders or ainpants isgreat for cold water
Aso super easy to add shit to it, as opposed to drilling a hole in my kayak i added a milk crate with pvc for rod holders, Now my kayak can have 6 rods maximum , The milk crate also serves as a perfect raised seat ( im going to cut a piece of plywood to make it a bit more comfy) , alos the milk crate fit 3600 boxes nearly perfectly ( 4 fit in mine even with my rod holders) Milk crate is held down with removable zip ties
the only other modification ive done is add an anchor and a place to wrap the anchor up, Wich is only 3/4 ( i think) inch pvc stuck in the scupper holes in the front section and i have a nail through the pvc to prevent it from falling down further through the hole and a hole drilled into the pvc to still allow the scupper hole to function ( worth noting thiat isnt the net i normally bring ann i dont normally bring that many rods ( i usually bring 2 maybe 3) but like to have space for a net, or if im bringing rods for someone whos kayak doesnt have rod holders

I'm totally new to fishing and have a couple questions

Is there a line weight / type I can use for both lake fishing for trout AND river fishing for larger salmon? Or should I be using two different setups? PNW / Vancouver Island area if it matters.

And can anyone suggest a decent entry - mid level spinning reel for this purpose?

pus you can also supposedly build a cart to carry your kayak to and from water easily

Check out the Pfluerger President. The "30" size would be nice for what you are thinking of. It is a tiny bit smaller than most "medium" sizes but larger than an ultralight. I have one and run 15lb PowerPro braid. That might be the answer for your trout and salmon deal.

It's on a 6'6" medium weight, fast action rod. With the 15lb braid and that rod, I can easily cast 1/8oz lures like small Rapalas and Mepps and it can handle 1/2oz crankbaits and spinners. It is fun to catch 10" Mayans and 5lb bass with.

Pic related is the setup I was talking about. That's actually the President LE which is $80, but the regular President will be a silver/blue reel body and runs $60 US. The "35" size is pretty big so I would look for the "30" with your purpose in mind. Anything smaller than that might not have the drag for a big salmon, even with heavier braided line. Very solid reel for the money and everybody who has owned one seems to reccommend them.

They have those for kayaks, jet skis, and small sailboats at the beach with those big sand tires.

Also here's the copypasta of decent combos under $100 that they sell at lot of retailers. Most will be medium weight, but as long as the rod has a little backbone, you can do 15lb-20lb braided line on them (much thinner than monofilament for a given strength) and should still be able to cast trout lures while handling fish up to 10lbs+.

Top to bottom, left to right.
1) Abu Garcia Ike 2- $39
2) Quantum Bill Dance- $39
3) Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2- $49
4) Pflueger Trion- $59
5) Bass Pro Tourney Pro- $59
6) Lew's Laser Speed Spool- $59
7) Abu Garcia Cardinal SX- $69
8) Daiwa Revros- $69
9) Mitchell 300- $69
10) Pflueger President- $79
11) Shimano Sedona/Sellus- $89
12) Mitchell 300 Pro- $89
13) Abu Garcia Orra S- $99

appreciate the advice, the Pflueger reel looks to be just what i'm looking for after checking out amazon reviews

I want to use braid, but I fish in crystal clear water -- people have recommended I use fluoro instead because "fish cant see it" -- any opinion on that?
>>

That's what leaders are for my friend.

If you are fishing for the trout in crystal clear water, you could do a few feet of a lower test flouro as a leader like 6lb or 8lb. But I have never felt like a leader made a difference even when fishing clear water for bass and stuff. I still run them sometimes but less and less as time goes by.

That anchor seems like overkill for a 'yak
>>
>>796842

Not him but as someone who uses a 3.5 lb basic yak anchor I can see why someone would use something bigger.
>>
>>796850
The one he has is the most common model used by recreational boaters as in actual powered watercraft such as ski boats and pontoon boats

its only 4 poun ds works great, idont use iti in rocky bottom or weeds
>>
>>796854
also o only reason i have iy is because i got it for free anchor is only 4 pounds plus maybe a pound or two for the chain on it , i ought to get some more smaller diameter ropw for it and keep a bit more with me,

Here is my problem with that; I want an adjustable upfront rodholder. I have no problem drilling holes but is there any way to get inside the bastard thing to do it or am I pretty much stuck with how it comes?
I seldom have more than 3 rods. If I can't mod a sit on top I think I'll have to get a sit in
>>
>>796862

On a sit on? Use rivets instead of bolts to install accessories.

Rivits?

Miami anon may be a (fish) murderer, but at least she is down to be at the lake by sunrise.

I think if this lake was just slightly murky, I could do work.

Once again, ran like everything. Got one decent bite on a Texas rigged curly tail worm but besides that the fish just want to follow the lure and check it out. The largemouth were even jumping a bit but won't hit shallow cranks, frogs, poppers, or prop/walking baits. Fuckers.

Alot of them have an access hatch for a dry area, and you can reach your arm inside it
Sometimes you may have to cut an access hole then find a way to attach water tight lid to it
Though it's not hard to use self tapping screws, and silicone to screw anything down and you don't even have to reach inside

Check out the YouTube channel zoffinger
He has a lot of neat shit
