Guy who was asking for basic fishing advice/reading/video links in last thread here again.

I'm from NJ.

Been watching Niggas in the river for the past 40 minutes which has been funny but not sure how educational it is.
>>
Decent light surf rod for <$50? I want it for big (30-40lb) cats, so I'll mostly be using live bait. Not too worried about sensitivity too much. Will an uglystik work?

>>783645

A personal fave is thundermist lures they do shill a bit but over all its very educational in regards to techniques, tactics and even cleaning and cooking fish
>>
>>783645
A lot of those videos are too much unless you know specifically what you are targeting or want to know how to work a certain lure.

Trial and error is the best. And most fun.
>>
I lost a really nice pike today. It seems like I lose the most fish when they jump out of the water, is there any way to counter this? Maybe I just didn't get a good hook set.

Pic related, where I was fishing. I couldn't get anything else to bite after I lost that fish.

>>
>>783887
jitterbug
>>
>>783887
Just remember that bluegill and shit can create quite a bit of commotion when going for bugs on a calm lake. It may not be bass. Also fuggin carp.
>>
>>783891
This pond I was fishing this afternoon has a fuck ton of big carp in it
First spot I went to i managed to bump one with my lure accedently then he took off and broadsided another
Causing about 30 carp @10-25 lbs to panic and stir up all the water
And effectively spook all the fish at the first spot
Second spot I nailed like 8 bass (biggest maybe a bit over 2)
Ad one little pickerel
>>
>>783891
I see. There are indeed a good amount of carp in that pond. There is stocking for trout and catfish. There were bass in the pond years ago, but I don't know about now. So far, I tried a popper (might be too big size though), and weightless superfluke, baby brush hog, and Yum worm but no luck so far. It's a nice size pond though that has good amount of structure and I heard it can go to 7 ft deep.

Another pond I also look at has a shit load of "weed bed?" I think the bass might be hiding under that. I see plenty of bluegill among the grass. I figure that maybe I can flip and pitch to punch into that cover. How heavy should my sinker be to get through? I have 1/4 and 1/2 bullet sinker. Is that enough?

Idk about other people, but I have better luck hitting bass when running stuff over the top of the weeds instead of through. Anything trying to go through ends up picking up a couple strands of shit and they don't eat it anyway.

I do better hitting the bass just on the outside of weed beds for the most part. I guess it depends how thick it is though.
>>
>>783905
You fish the edge of weed beds
Or try to fish over them tying to run over thin spots

That's basically what I was saying. I like to go just on the deeper side of them normally, but if I think the bass are in them I will run stuff faster on the top. Even with a weedless soft plastic, you will still catch shit trying to go straight through.
>>
>>783912
And by "catch shit going straight through" I mean weeds and gunk, and fish never seem to bite stuff with weeds hanging off.

Does suck they are only a pack of 5 when it's easy to rip through them on one fish.
>>
>>783964
yeah Bit i need more now
trying a different brand as well with different legs and will see how it works
>>
>>783965
I really haven't used em much since I bought them. The bass aren't hitting much of the topwater stuff (at least any big bass) and I was running them weightless on 10lb braid across weed beds hoping for snek hits but I got gar and a couple small bass chasing them.

Of the shit I read online for snakeheads, nobody really mentions spinners and they work better than anything else for me. Especially inlines. But those are inherently shitty with the weed cover where sneks live so not sure what to do now. Only reason I get along with them at this one lake so well is because the sneks hide in these underwater patches of grass and I can run over the top of them. But the lakes with lillies and reeds where there are lots of sneks, that won't work at all.

Could work. The sneks at the one spot are getting very weary of my inlines and I think I have killed most of the larger ones that lived right there.

I still need to get that monster...
>>
>>783985
if you hsppen to see horny toads on sale anywhere let me know nigga, the way you discribe the sneks reminds me very much of how the pickerel are here,
>>
>>783974
Never used a horny toad but I had a lot of luck taking one of those two hook hollow body frog lures with the legs and putting an egg sinker inside the body. Got it below the lily pads and the sinker couldn't snag any weeds where it was

>>783987
Dick's and Bass Pro are always having sales on Zoom stuff, mostly like 25% off or buy 2 get one.

Walmart is also really cheap for Zoom baits if they have what you need.

The sneks are easily spooked too which is a pain. The younger ones will run out of those little grass patches I was talking about and catch up with my spinner a few feet from shore and see me. And if they do hit it once and don't get hooked, you won't get another chance.
>>
>>783990
try crouching by the shore, basically slav squat,, ive noticed a difference when fishing for bass and oickerel
>>
>>783991
Man, it's tough though. The one lake with all the weeds and lillies, I know there are a bunch but I have only gotten one. He hit a Mepps as soon as it dropped in the water.

But when I went there specifically for sneks, I was spooking them with the smallest stuff. I would cast ahead of where I was walking and would see them bolt from the line moving a lilly a bit. It's so confusing.

>>783989
That's not bad. With the Horny Toads, I rig them like a weedless fluke or worm with no weight and run them like a buzzbait with just enough speed to stay on top of the water. I can easily drop em just below the waterline too. Works decent with lizards as well.
>>
>>783997
and do they react to live shiners?
>>
>>783998
I'm sure they will take them. I'm too impatient for that though. Only reason I bought those shiners a couple weeks ago is because I really wanted a peacock. And so the Miami anons might actually catch something. But I barely used them at all.

I also realized shiners don't last for shit in the South Florida sun. Grabbed em at 6am, used a 5gal bucket, and almost all were floating by 10am.
>>
>>784003
try downsizing, Use a 2-3 inch lure, Ive recently been using a 3 inch ( i think ) sluggo, ridded weedless and with a small splitshot infront of it, lots of twitching and dragging it across the bottom works well
>>
>>783663
Same thing happened to me today wven down to no further activity after losing the fish except it was a big bass

Key is keeping tension on the line while the fish breaches because if the line slacks then the hook will almost always be thrown during a breach
>>
>>783616
Well, try not fishing on Sunday. That way, you can fish on Saturday, and be rested for Monday.
>>
Question: if I catch snakehead fish, are they good to eat? I know they're edible, I just don't know if it's worth keeping them.

If not, I'll just cull the thing.
>>
I don't understand how anyone can catch anything with lures. I've never done it successfully.

Usually use bloodworms in fresh water, and squid in salt. They work really well.
>>
>>784058

Why not find out for yourself, since you should be killing those on sight anyways?
>>
>>784063
I know to kill it, and if I catch one, I will. I'm just curious if anyone here's actually eaten one, and if the taste is any good.
>>
>>784060

It really depends on what you are fishing for. As for freshwater bass and trout here in the states I'd rather go out all day and get skunked with lures than use live bait. In my experience those species aren't very hard to fool though.
>>
>>784066
I dunno. Live bait works rather well for me. I've even used minnows before.

I've found trout strike at anything, even empty hooks. They tend to be the only thing I've seen power bait work on.

Caught a largemouth bass one time, and couldn't get it on the pier. These kids saw I had the fish, ran over in excitement, and grabbed my line and snapped it.

They had all brought cheap, store bought, closed reel rods. I brought a 6ft surf rod. Might have been overkill for that lake.
>>
>>784070
I hope you threw them into the water
>>
>>784060
I don't like using live bait (except for worms) if I'm doing C&R. Seems kinda wrong to kill something for my entertainment, but I don't blame people for using them.
>>
>>784070

If you can't catch LMBs on artificials than you are probably in the wrong place/wrong time. Or doing something very wrong.
>>
>>784071
I really wish I had. There were too many witnesses.

Messed up part though... their older brother walked around the lake to fish by himself. He caught my fish.

Rage against the children.
>>
>>784076
I have no idea. I usually fish salt water, where the only bass I see are rockfish.
>>
>>784075
I can understand that. I stopped feeling bad for the bloodworms when I saw those teeth.
>>
While I and the two other people at a river weren't catching shit, the guy to my left had three within fifteen minutes or so, which was pretty good considering it was around 2 PM. I asked him what he was using and he said night crawlers. I saw one of his poles just sitting there with a line in the water, I assume a river rig, but he was casting and retrieving the worm pole. It seemed to have some weight on it, too. Anyone know what kind of rig that might have been? I didn't think to ask.
>>
>>784113
Probably a Carolina rig

They are supposed to be really tasty. They were farm raised because Asians love em and that's how they got out into the wild.

With the size and build, I imagine you can get some nice catfish type fillets from them.
>>
Has anyone eaten saltwater hardhead catfish?

I brought a couple home and their bone structure was completely different from freshwater cats, and it was very hard to cut into them without puncturing organs.

The meat was blood red but pretty tasty.

I just bought an intex 400 raft for fishing but can't find reviews of it anywhere online. My dad said it looks like a death trap so can anyone recommend good life vests and/or tell me if it was worth buying
>>
>>784241
May not be an exact match but the reviews might give you an idea

https://www.amazon.com/Intex-400-Seahawk-Inflatable-Boat/dp/B00164XK42

Also I was going to buy something similar at one point but my wife gave me a look like she'd kill me before the raft did. She's paranoid that a gator would bite a hole in it. But it's more likely I'd run over a pointy stick and bust the boat before I got it in the water knowing my luck.

>incoming Pepsi life story
Nah, a bunch of the locations are union but we aren't. The location in Miami is union and the union reps tried really hard to get us to unionize in past years. We actually have "No Tresspassing" signs inside our gated parking lot now because the union people used to lurk there in the afternoons when everybody was getting off.

I honestly wouldn't even want it. Pepsi is a decent company to work for, they match $0.50 per dollar on the 401k (would be better if dollar for dollar), health insurance and all benefits on day one, pay is competitive, if not better than similar jobs in the area. And both my immediate bosses are cool so I have never run into an issue where I felt like I had to go above their heads.

There is all the bullshit you get with any big company like games when it comes to promotions and a million bosses above my head, but I'm actually at the plant maybe 30min a day and just do my own thing the other 8hrs or 9hrs.

It's a hard job though, only reason I'm still there is because I know my route and customers and can knock out an 11hr day in 9hrs. Our turnover rate is crazy with drivers since they don't expect what is coming. But when you get your CDL, you can either work hard at a job like that or go cross-country and be home a weekend a month for $35k/yr. Fuck that. I would do it for a few years if I were making $100k/yr, but I'm straight working my 45hrs a week, $50k (plus no state income tax), and getting to sleep in a real bed with a big TV next to it.

What the fuck.

>mfw my boss calls ten minutes into fishing and I say I can't come in early because I'm busy

I tried a river rig, then switched to a Carolina rig, which someone suggested the guy who was slaying them yesterday was using, with no luck. I guess it's just too hot. Whether I catch fish or not, though, I always have a good time.

>>784572
Did you do a nightcrawler on the Carolina rig?

Back in the day when we fished the river for walleye and whatnot, we always did those river rigs with minnows. Some call em Lindy rigs maybe? Weight at the bottom, 2 or 3 baitholder hooks, and some little beads and spinner blades. Toss em out, tighten up the line, and wait for the rod tip to start bouncing.

One trick with nighcrawlers on those Carolina rigs is to blow them up with air. We used to use a hypodermic needle, but it you can't steal somebody's insulin needle, they will sell worm inflaters at Bass Pro and stuff. You pump some air into the worm and it makes them plump and float up above the bottom better. I bet dude you were watching catch all the fish was blowing up the worms.

Just don't go too big and make them pop...
>>
>>784484
Ahh, for the Okuma. Glad other dude reminded me of the Sellus. $50-$60. Otherwise look for a cheap Veritas somewhere. I think Dick's was clearing some of the micro guide ones out for $75 or $80, and they are casting rods.

I like the sizes on the Sellus rods too. Lots of them are 6'9" I believe. Fairly heavy and fast action for a medium weight rod which will be nice if you want to put #30 or #40 braid on that reel and rip through weeds.

>>
>>784574
Yeah, I was using crawlers on both the river rig and Carolina rig. The river rig I'm referring to is a three way swivel with a hook on one line and a sinker on the other, a lindy rig is different. Around here they're called Wolf River Rigs. Same rig I always use for walleye and white bass, but usually minnows or leeches. I've had success with catfish still fishing a Carolina rig. I'm not sure if I want to use up the last of my worms at the pond across the road from my work for catfish tonight or not, this cold is kind of kicking my ass.

There was so much current in the river I was on that it'd drag my pole around until I moved to that post where the pole sat in a little crevice, and I had two 3/4 ounce sinkers on.

Unrelated to fishing, my local pepsifag stacked 16 cases of Gatorade in front of electrical boxes that are clearly marked with signs that say "DO NOT STACK PRODUCT IN YELLOW BOX", how can I get back at him for being a nigger? I was thinking about taking all of the Pepsi products out of the racks and staring at him when I check him in.
>>
>>784585
So did you blow them up?

>>784592
Don't be a dick, his job is hard enough. I know a lot of them are lazy nigs (I work with enough of them) but just tell dude not to put it there next time.

On Wednesday, I stacked 27 cases of Gatorade in front of some fire exit door. Dude told me to though, thought it was kinda odd but it was a double door so I guess you could still get through one. Fire marshall would probably be pissed if he saw it.
>>
>>784596
No, I've never tried that. I might get one of those worm blower things, they look cheap.

I'm still going to stare at him while he reads off the invoice.

Got the new reels all spooled up. Spent more monies than I was planning to, but oh well.

Got a 7' 6" MH veritas for the memecaster and a 7' uglystik for the sienna to use for cats.

I went with 7' on the uglystik because the only time I really fish for cats is from my buddies boat and we usually just drop our lines and drift for a little bit, so I don't really have to cast super far.

Also, those siennas say they'll hold 145 yards of 50lb braid and it wouldn't even hold 125 of the spiderwire I got.

>>784575
Yee. I went ahead and bought a veritas 2.0 for full price because I'm impatient and want to use my new reel. I only saw one sellus and it was 6' 6" medium, I think, and I wanted something heavier.

Saved. Somebody wanted pic related for this thread but Skid got there first.

And def grab the worm blower upper deal. Should help quite a bit with presentation and it won't be more than a couple bucks. Or ask your local diabetic or junky for a (clean) syringe, they might even work better. Those are cheap too but you probably don't need a pack of 20 if you go to Walgreens. Maybe steal one from your doc's office.
>>
>>784607
Veritas looks nice. Micro guides or regular guides?

That shit happens to me too, I get a good deal on a reel and then get impatient and end up dropping way too much on a decent rod and some braid for it.

I'm so pissed I have to work tomorrow. Think I better get to the lake tonight for a bit anyway. I want to go to the lake with the monster bass but I'm probably just gonna go down the street.
>>
>>784614
Yeah it has micro guides. I think they're really nice with braid. I haven't tried them with mono so I can't really compare.

And I really wish braid wasn't so damn expensive. Spent a little over $200 today on 2 rods, 30# braid, 50# braid, and some 1oz weights.

Which reminds me I need some more bullet weights. Life is hard mang.

You might want to look at Home Depot. That's where I got mine and they ship it to your house for free. Everywhere else seems to charge ~$50 for shipping unless you ship it to a store.
>>
>>784629
It also said $90 shipping flat on kayaks I think, so I would probably pick up in-store or however. You're going to need a way to transport it anyway. Might as well figure that out before you buy so you don't get raped on shipping.

Or anybody with a car, just tie it to the roof.

>>784618
I feel ya, I always end up buying 300yd spiils too because I hate having 20yds left on a spool after spooling up one reel. Which reminds me I really need to add line to a couple of my reels
>>
>>784632
>>784629
You could also rent a Uhaul van for like $25 if you buy a yak and need to get it home. I always rent their enclosed trailers because no mileage fee. $20 for the whole day when the vans can end up being a lot more if you drive far. Just tell them it is in-town (no odometer on trailers anyway) and I hook it up to the Jeep. You need something with a hitch though.
>>
>>784634
Yeah having that extra bugs the shit out of me too. I thought for sure that sienna would take all 125 yards but guess not. Do the japs just not test that and guesstimate or what? Lol
>>
>>784638
>>784607
Maybe they don't take in account of the layer of backing and overspool the shit out of the reel or something. Maybe they use a spooling machine that has all the line sitting more neatly and perfectly so the reel ends up holding more.

The capacity label for braid for shimano is based on power pro braid too so many it's based on difference in diameter between brands

Who knows
>>
>>784646
It's not just braid, mono too. I think that line capacity is done spooling real tight and even with a machine and to the edge of the reel spool. You have to be careful with those Shimano spools too. They have that bevel on the top of the spool that just throws line off if you go too full. Casts well tho.

Tldr dirt/rocks got into the spinny rotating hand thing and now it grinds and isn't smooth

How can I clean it?
>>
>>784653
Everything comes apart easily.

For the handle, you either unscrew the cap on the opposite side or twist the handle backwards and it will come off. You can take the spool off too, and then there will be maybe 3-4 screws to take the whole rotor off. Just don't lose any washers or tiny parts and put them back in the right order.

And then rebuild it with some decent grease. If that's the Ugly Stik GX2 combo, I could probably rebuild mine later and take pics. Otherwise google it.
>>
>>784653
Try to remove the handle. There's a knob on the opposite side, just unscrew it.

idk about that reel, but for shimano reel, that part is separated very easily so that people can switch the handles to right/left side or change the handle.

Remove any shit you find. For the separated handle, you can probably spray/dunk it with water since there isn't much complicated components in it. Let it dry, put some oil on the moving sections of the handle, and it should be smooth again.
>>
>>784672
I'm trying to remember if those ones are like the Shimano reels or like Pflueger reels and stuff. A bunch of mine, taking the cap opposite the handle doesn't do anything. You have to twist the handle the opposite way you normally do to reel the line in and the handle threads in and out.

>>784653
I wish I were home and I would take pics of mine. All you need to take it completely apart is a smaller Phillips screwdriver and a wrench for the big nut (normally brass) that holds the rotor on. Those cheap reels can't have too many parts. If you can actually get down to the gears and that big corkscrew type part that moves the rotor up in down, you can clean that and grease the fuck out of it and you will be straight.
>>
>>784681
what does he need pics of? i may b e able yo do it depending on how well my broken phone feels like working
>>
>>784646
It probably has to be a machine then way over spooling it.

>The capacity label for braid for shimano is based on power pro braid
I think they're the same or damn near it. I wouldn't think it's enough to deviate ~30 yards. Oh well it's not really a big deal, just mildly annoying.

Was pretty windy anyway and I wasn't getting shit for bites. Then started messing with an inline for a min and got this little guy. Probably would've had more luck if I stayed, they like to start biting just around the time I left. My nigga who told me about that lake showed up as I was about to leave, he always has to stop by at sunset for a Black & Mild and a couple bass bites. Well I'm not impressed, but I'm not disappointed either.

Turns out the rod is a "frog series." I don't know if it's different than the other ones, but the tip isn't as fast as I'd like. The good new is, it's easy as hell to walk the dog with it, so it'll be good for jerks and i like it with cranks too.

The Okuma is okay. It is pretty easy to nest up if you don't keep your thumb on the spool, but that could be that I just don't have it tuned in quite right. The handle feels kind of cheap too. Not like it'll break or anything, just not like my STX. Cast really far though so that's cool.

I think I know what you're talking about and I remember them in IL but haven't noticed them around here.

The one thing that does annoy me is one of my regular lakes, sometimes when the wind is blowing just right, it brings a ton of these long pine needles along the shoreline where I go for the sneks and everything. Just because of how the wind comes from the east, I normally cast into it almost parallel to shore and if I'm runnig a spinner or crank, the line just funnels all of these pine needles right into the hooks.

Fuck nature.

South Florida is just a crazy mix of Cubans, New Yorkers, Jamaicans, Haitians, Canadians, and whatever else so it can get buck sometimes. Cubans are tame for the most part and Jamaicans aren't too bad. It's the Haitian and New York refugees that have this ignorance that makes you hate people. And I drink Diet Coke anyway. Diet Coke > Diet Pepsi. But I do prefer regular Pepsi to regular Coke even though the only time I drink either is when fast food places fuck up the order.

>>784777
Trips confirms. Hot dogs in Kool Aid. Sounds like a carp and catfish bait.

Back when I was a kid, I remember making a carp bait with white bread, cheese, and a little soda in it. Worked decent, stayed on treble hooks pretty well and I think carp go for that sweetness. If you ever buy commercial carp baits, they are normally sweet with some anise in it.
>>

Hotdog bait:

Ok. So it might work on carp? Personally, I wasn't sure it would work at all. I didn't think fish likes sweet things.

I normally don't have much of a problem casting the knots through the guides. The tags are what can catch up, but the flouro tag gets caught on the retrieve and the braid just frays right away so no issue. But I feel ya on not liking to cast the knots.

I want to get a roll of #12 or #15 flouro. I have a 250yd spool of #8 and #20. I run the #8 on #10 braid when I want real finesse stuff, and have been using the #20 for everything else including my Texas rigs. But that #20 is pretty fuckin strong and has let to me losing a bit of braid. I want the leader to break before the main line and it hasn't happened. Lost a bunch of line on a memecaster last weekend because of that and was a lil pissed.

I'm assuming you are looking for a spinning combo, right?

For my money, I would say get a Pflueger President combo. They will have them at Bass Pro or Cabela's on a decent store brand rod for around $80-$90. Or buy the reel alone for $50-$60 and get whatever rod you want. But those reels will last for years and years. Highly reccommended to me and I now own 2 and have nothing bad to say.

The Pflueger Trion reels are a little cheaper and seem nice as well. I know one of our Ausfag anons says he and a bunch of his friends swear by them. They may come on a Fenwick rod too which is good.

I'm not an expert on sharks but it looks like a black tip. Apparently there's another shark called a Spinner that looks exactly like it but the Spinner has a black tip on the bottom fun closest to the tail while a Black tip shark does not.
>>
>>784863
Cool. I can only identify the really big, man eating sharks.

>>784857
Sweet corn and sugar? Ok. I'll try it at some point.
>>
>>784862
never had anything too ridiculous happen , managed to catch a 200 lb shark while on a party boat fishing for cod once
well i got t to the side of the boat before the deckhands cut the line

Also saved some old dude last summer from possibly drowning
>>
>>784862
There's video footage of the event. Just have no idea where my step dad put it. Can't ask him, he died last year.

I cursed a lot, in that video.

that or if i can conince the guys i fish with to go out shafrk fishing il show you a real shark ( one of the guys ive fished with has the state record mako at 650 lbs
>>
>>784875
Excellent, sir. Last time I had a short that large hit the beach, was maybe ten years ago. No pics, sadly.

That same trip, ten years ago, I caught a seagull. I cast out, and the line hit it right as it flew by.

I'd rather unhook a shark than ever untangle a damn gull again.
>>
>>784879
comeo on handiling big birds isnt that hard, Last year i had to untangle a large osprey from a net at the hatchery, Wrapping it in my shirt helped keep it calm
>>
>>784856
I had 3 rude mexicans ask me if I had seen the police as I was leaving from river fishing in the woods. I said no and was really friendly telling them where the big fish were at because I was by myself with only a knife. They let me leave and when I got out of the woods and to my car the game warden showed up asked for my license and about the other car parked next to mine, I told him everything and he called for backup. I got the fuck outta there after that.

I don't think I'm going alone ever again.
>>
>>784881
Dude, I hate birds. Fish are easy to deal with, you just watch the mouth. Birds are faster.

I know a guy who ate seagull once. He said it was all gristle, and not worth the energy to catch.
>>
>>784887
thwts why you wrap it in a shirt, and have someone make sure its legs dont fuck you up
>>
>>784885
Wow. Where was this, if you don't mind me asking?
>>
>>784888
So, it's like trimming a cats claws. Straight-jacket shirt or towel. Ok, I'll remember that, and hope I have one of those things handy.

The more you know.
>>
>>784889
NC, why?
>>
>>784878
Well bear in mind I was in 13 feet of water with a tiny bait (5-6 inches maybe) and only 2 feet of wire
>>
>>784891
i mean dont try to handle birds, But we had to untangle this giant bird to help it
>>
>>784834
Haha that little guy would be awesome if I had a big aquarium

>>784856
A bird got tangled as fuck in my line this afternoon. It was kinda funny, the thing just landed in the water for like 15 seconds and had no idea what to do. I just let the line go slack and it somehow popped off when the fucker finally took off.

I also sold a 9lb carp for $5 to some Mexican family having a fiesta at this park when I was a kid. I didn't ask for money, and I told him they are no good to eat but he handed me $5 and took the big carp.

>>784836
In-store is nice because you can actually see what you are getting. And if you aren't spending a ton, it might not be worth buying online because $10-$20 shipping on a rod could negate any savings that you get compared to the store.

I still stand by what I posted earlier, a Pflueger President combo should last you decades if you take care of it. And the rest of that list will get the job done. Pflueger Trion for a little less moneh.

It all depends on your price range too. Bass Pro and Cabela's will have some decent store brand combos for <$50. But if a part breaks, you better have a Bass Pro or Cabela's nearby to return it to and get a new one. If you go with a major brand like Shimano or Abu Garcia, you will always be able to get replacement parts for it if something breaks or you lose a washer cleaning it 5 years down the road. Walmart even carries the Abu Garcia Cardinal SX combos for around $75 and those are pretty nice. Or there is always the ol' Shimano Sienna reel ($30) on the Shakespeare Ugly Stik rod ($40), can't go wrong there. Pflueger President reel for $50-$60 and an Ugly Stik and you won't have to worry about shit until your kids are grown.
>>
>>784893
yeah i never said it wasnt a bad fish, The party boat fish had no wire, and no clue about the mako,
>>
>>784892
Sounds like something more likely to happen around my area, MD.
>>
>>784897
Each one of those little guys, pulled down a 12 ft. Surf rod. The second the rod hit the sand, I dove on it, expecting something bigger.

Freaking birds, am I right...

Hey, a bucks a buck.
>>
>>784896
I wanted to let it loose, not keep it. Seagull's not good eating.
>>
>>784904
Younger fish fight hard a lot of the time too so I'm not suprised it seemed bigger.

And this lake where the bird got tangled up, there are these tall reeds where hundreds of little black bids hang out towards dusk and make a ton of noise. They hit my line quite a bit and get freaked out but never had one get tangled like that. It was just funny because it didn't even try to struggle and make it worse. Just landed right away and was confused as shit for 10-15 seconds until it shook it off.

Same lake a month or two ago I had a seagull take a dive at a popper. I yanked it away right as he was closing in and he just missed it.
>>
Ok, here's another story. I was at Mariner Point, in MD. My uncle took me fishing. The water was clear, and I could see this nice yellowtail fish in the grass. I dropped the hook in front of it, it bit, I pulled, it opened its mouth at just the right moment, and the hook came flying out.

At that exact moment, another yellowtail was swimming past, and the hook caught it in the ass.
My uncle was rolling. He said that was the first time he'd ever seen a fish come up on the line backwards.
>>
>>784906
Hehe. Birds. I'd be confused too if I was commuting somewhere, and suddenly FISHING LINE.

I usually have to keep one eye on the rods, and another on the bait box, because of the gulls.
>>
>>784911
Well to you it would be commuting then suddenly rope
>>
what should i get from cabellas? ? figure $10 worth of shit

So tomorrow I'm going fishing
Should I go to the river the lake or a New river?
>>
>>784927
actually up to 30-40 woth of shit

Ahh, I got one more that I may have told once before. It involves my old neighbor who was a couple years younger than me. I think he has been to the ER 3 times in his life and they were all accidents that happened when he was with me.

>family goes to this lake with a beach for a Sunday afternoon
>they rent out rowboats, so neighbor kid and I get one and go fishin
>hot summer day, neighbor kid has his shirt off and is fishing on the other side of the boat with his back turned towards me
>I get my hook stuck in a lilly pad and yank it out
>hook goes flying past me, lodged deep as fuck into kid's back
>I row my ass off in this aluminum boat to make it back to shore and it takes forever
>hook still in kid's back, now mom has to pack up all the beach stuff and drive back to hospital near home so his dad can meet him there and all that good shit
>poor kid probably had that hook in his back for close to 2hrs with everything that happened and they ended up cutting a second hole and pushing the hook all the way through so the barb wouldn't tear him up

I'm trying to remember the other two ER trips. One was at a roller skating rink when his finger somehow got ran over and really fucked up but I know there was another incident.
>>
>>784936
i remember when i managed to hook my best friend in the cheek i aso hooked my ltitle cousin in the arm and he wouldnt let me take it out, so he had to go to hospital
>>
>>784936
Ouch, man.

Ok, here's a short one...

I waited out into the surf, set the reel to cast, put the rod over my shoulder, and right as I let fly the reel locked and the hook sunk into my right calf.

Pulled it out, Barb and all. One bandaid later, I tried again.

Or a couple weeks ago on Ocracoke, I tried to snap the line with my fingers. The line was several years old, so I figured why not. The line sliced my finger open like a garrott wire. Again, one bandaid later, and I was back to it.
>>
Sliced a chunk of fingertip off once, with a knife. Held it on with paper towels and tape. Long story short, I still have a complete finger. It just feels funny in that spot.

Advice... never open a popsicle with a serrated knife.
>>
>>784927
>>784934
anyone? i know i should get line and weights, and hooks but thats no fun
>>
>>784946
Zoom Lizards in chartruese pepper.

I've been doing well with some of their darker finesse worms too. "Sprayed Grass" was an interesting color that gets bites.

Also get down on that all chartruese Booyah spinnerbait that I want to get.
>>
>>784946
Depends on the conditions and what you're after.

To start, Salt or fresh water?

Here's mine
>Be me
>Bored of catching itty bitty fish
>Take spot about 8 inches long

>hook it up on a fish finder rig and 4 oz of lead and a 6/0 circle hook with #3 wire
>Swim 150 feet out
>In a rip current
>Holding bloody fish
>Swim back in
>Lifegaurd is waiting for me
>He's pissed of
>an hour later
>Check bait; it's all been eaten by crabs
>Do it again
>Lifeguard yells at me again
That was a good day

I bought this
> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00843UMIU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
a while ago and it's really great. Very stable, moves fast, lots of room for storage, rod holders, etc. Feels like it's made very well and even after 6 months I still love it and haven't had any problems.

I'm 5 ft 4 and 120 lbs though so you might want to keep that in mind.. but yeah, great kayak for the money. Would definitely recommend.
>>
>>784954
Lifeguard? I've never seen a lifeguard at a fishing area.

Lucky something big didn't take a bite out of you.
>>
>>784955
I heard braided can be rough to handle. Strong as hell, but once it snags on anything, you have to cut it.
>>
>>784968
I've never had to cut it. I'll usually bend the hook or break the knot.
>>
>>784956
In that case, I'd say a 30lb test line. Maybe a 3 ounce weight. In fresh water, attach the hook at the bottom of the line, and the weight further up, that way the bait will float upward slightly.

Uglystick is a good rod brand to consider, maybe something short and thick to prevent breaking.

A good open reel runs expensive, but is less likely to tangle, easier to fix if it does, and metal gears inside shouldn't break.
>>
>>784972
I meant in cases where you can't get to the hook or knot, like if you snag a downed tree.
>>
>>784974
i hae 8-10 rods and reels i use4, as well as hundreds of dollars of tackle i just keep buying more shit
>>
There was this one time at a camp ground in VA. The singer/guitarist from my dad's church took a few of us to a secret fishing spot. We climbed over rocks, logs, and boulders to get there.

Right in front of a massive clay cliff-face, college kids had written their names in. NONE of those people thought of fishing there apparently.

The dude said to cast out, wait 3 seconds, and tug. He was not joking. Every 3 seconds, sunfish.

Sunfish all day. Awesome.
>>
>>784980
my uncle has a small pond in his backyard, i can litterally catch 3 fish at a time , on rod in each hand and one between my legs
>>
>>784976
Oh I know. I mean I do that from wherever I'm fishing from. If I don't think i can get it free I'll point the rod right at wherever it's snagged and just start walking backwards, hold the spool, and it'll break.
>>
>>784965
It was a public beach on the obx of nc
Lifeguards go up and down on 4 wheelers looking for people in trouble
Idk I take a lot of stupid risks that may be a manifestation of being suicidal
>Be me
>Last week
>busy road
>Traffic going 50 mph
>Speed limit is 40
>Drop gear
>Get on yellow line
>Tfw going 75 mph down the yellow line between oncoming traffic and the car a I'm passing
>>
>>784978
Why? Is their something wrong with the gear you have? I'd say, use it till it breaks and can't be repaired. That way, you learn the feel of the fish on the line, specific to each piece. Kinda like a muscle memory, or instinct. Fishing should be about skill, not gear. (Kinda like the anti-photography)
>>
>>784978
I'm up to 7 that aren't walmart specials and I use 2 of them the most. Then there's the 95% of the tackle I don't use lol.
>>
>>784985
i have my ultralight, my st croix, , my 2 ugly stiks ( loaner rods/backups) , and my short ultralight for freshwater, Then my old st croix, my new 8 ft surf rod, and my 7 ft boat rod for salt,
so 8 i use, 2 i use most in fresh
>>784984
different gear for different applications, im not going to use my 7 ft 6 ultralight trout rod for jigging for bluefish in 80-100 ft of waterr with 8-12 ounce diamond jigs
>>
>>784983
Oh you mean the beach patrollers. Their whole thing is to keep people from doing anything illegal, or potentially stupid. If someone's in trouble, they call the coat guard ships docked in the marinas and ferry terminals to come save you.

>>784982
I've actually never used braided. I want to, but it's so expensive. I just know what I've heard from people who used it. My step dad once told me he pulled up half a downed tree with a 30lb braided up in Harve De Grace, MD.

>>784981
Nice. Ever consider a double hook lead? Go for six at a time.
