#40- "Friday The 13th" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>760858

I got nothin. Almost the weekend, just trying to make it through the work day without getting run over by a car since it's Friday the 13th. I wonder if the fishing will be any good today.

Talk about feeshin.

Buddies hit some shad yesterday in the river...and im sitting here like a gypsy Hocking shit at a flea market.

Fuck I can't wait to get home. To catch shad and maybe try it with my new tenkara rod.

Some shops do cheap tats today if anyone is into that. Gonna try to use some finesse today. Worst case I'll catch sand bass and green sunfish with them.

I got run over by a car while working on Friday the 13th in Feb last year. Since then, I'm not a big fan.

If you move around areas with traffic, you have a high chance of getting hit by a car.
Literally no relation to friday the 13th.

I'm going gill netting in Alaska this summer,

Is there a correlation between fish size and the body of water they reside in?

There's tons of healthy bait fish, young bass everywhere, but I have yet to catch anything larger than 10".

Ponds definatley can be overpopulated
>>
>>764506
I don't know about ecosystems but i wouldn't say it's overpopulated.
Schools near the shore aren't anymore than a dozen or so bluegills, and occasionally you'll see a handful of bass together, but it's not like you throw a piece of bread in the water and you have hundreds swarming, far from it actually.

I know the pond is older than I am, but the fish have always been the same size for the 20odd years I've fished this place

Are the gills etc small? Or of decent size
If there are alot of small ones it may be worth it to remove a hundred or so small gills
If they're of decent size maybe the bass just need time to grow, maybe there was a fish kill there in the past years
Or maybe it's just totally overfished and everyone keeps the big ones
>>
>>764620
it's private property, and we've always done catch and release.

I'm about to head up there right now for a bit I'll try and take photos

Then continue with catch and release
I've helped manage a few ponds removing hundreds even thousands of bluegills from one pond in particular
Now you catch much more bass and perch, and the average Gill size s 8 inches compared to 5 inches like it was before

I work at a country club & occasionally help people with their tackle & I've been running into a LOT of old lures in trees that seem like they've been there for decades.

Are any of these expensive? If so, what should I look out for? I've been cleaning them off branches & don't want to throw them away if someone could use them.

Not my picture btw, just the first google search result for "expensive fishing lure"

Gonna hit up the Bass Pro Shops in a couple hours

And try (and definitely fail) not to spend all of my money

I'm gonna pick up some 8 lb Cajun line mono, a Rapala broke back minnow 6" or larger probably, 5/0 wide gap offset shank hooks, a new hat, and need recommendations on other the following please

A recommendation on a spinner bait, and a top water would be appreciated

Thanks

Most lures, no, maybe a few bucks. You would have to find some exceptionally rare shit for it to be worth high double or triple digits. The ones that sell in the thousands are generally 1. In excellent condition with box, or 2. so old that few have survived.

Contrary to popular opinion, today was a lucky day for me. Caught these two pike off a tip I got last year and just now followed up on. The guy who told me about it said people laughed at him when he asked about fishing where I was, which was below a dam. Last cast, I figured I'd cast along the shore to my left. What I thought was a snag was the Northern on the right. The next cast got the one on the left. At this point, I really did have to get going, so I packed up and left with plans to return soon.

Tackle used:
Pole: Shimano Scabard 6'6" medium action
Reel: Shimano Sienna 4000FD with 12 pound mono
Lure: Little Cleo Wigl Lite

I knew my dancing lady would come through for me, she always does.

Booyah also sells some nice chartruese ones with yellow blades. I have one in yellow and black that has gotten me lots of nice bass.

I highly reccommend a Rapala Skitter Pop for topwater. The brown frog. Pic related.

Finally got to try out that duck lure i made. Was pleased with the result.

That day was slow as hell, but picked up right as the sun set and the air temp cooled (and of course when the go pro died)
>>
>>764741
Or "turtle figures out how to get a circle hook through his neck"
>>
Im fairly new at fishing, and just picked it up again. I've caught a few fish before, but have always had my dad or a friend to help me land and release.

The few fishing sessions ive had now never caught any, but i have always been nervous about how to handle the fish. I know you should have wet hands but that's about it. Any pointers?

Also is barbless hooks the way to go?
>>
>>764752
don't touch the inside gills
support the body weight with your other hand when you can, especially for bigger fish

Barbless takes some work to get used to. It will be hard for a beginner to not lose fishes. I started to lose fish with barbless when I never did before when I had barb. Of course, if you use treble then barbless helps removing hook a lot. For single hook, you are going to have to keep tension really well. If you are using a small single hook though, you probably should keep the barb.
>>
>>764709
Miami anon here, wanna do something this weekend? I'm fine with any time of day.
>>
>>764752
Fish are pretty damn tough. Like the other anon said as long as you don't fuck up the gills or leave it out of the water too long it should be alright.

It's okay to lip the fish to pull it out of the water and everything, but try to support the body with another hand whenever you can. If you do lip it make sure you hold the fish vertically and not at an angle.
>>
>>764741
ok seriously, does being a better angler decrease the chance of hooking a fish through the eye, or having them swallow the hook completely?

I'm so sick of finally getting something with a little fight in it, and then seeing the damn thing somehow managed to notch the hook through it's eye
>>
>>764760
yeah I do, just not with you
>>
>>764752
barbless are good i you know you're releasing. Barbs tear up their mouths. I've crimped down the barbs on what I'm using now unitl fish get over keeping size. As soon as I land one of those bi@tches I'm going full dinners on the table barb
>>

I've got a Blue gill spine lodged in my palm right now, and no amount of digging with a knife and tweezers can unbury it, it seems.

Is this like a catfish barb where I'm at risk of serious infectious, or am I ok to just wash it out and go on with my day?
>>
>>764804
Umm it has to be removed at some point dumbass. And yes high infection risk.
>>
>>764805
yeah but a catfish's is barbed, so it won't come out naturally, I assume this is no different than a splinter and it will come out eventually
>>
>>764804
Wash your hands abd let it fester a day or two
Once the barb is buried in a small cyst instead of flesh it should just pop out

Just watch it and make sure the infection isn't too bad
>>
Whenever bub gets here I hope he sees this or at least a fly fisherman sees it
Soon (few weeks maybe) I'm going to respool my 7 wt (it's currently wearing 8 weight line)
Its main uses are steelhead, bass, small pike, and I may do some light saltwater
Should I get sink tip line of floating line?

Since I have my New 4 wt I've got a panfish and trout rod so I want my 7 weight to be set up properly
>>
>>764816
No need to dedicated sinking leader, just use 3/4 ounc split shot on your tippet
>>
>>764817
>3/4 oz

Isn't that a little heavy considering most fly fishing splitshot are ranked by letter instead of weight? Like B, BB, BBB, and BBBB are the ones I see most

I'm just not sure
I guess you're right I can just weight my tippit to get deeper- you can make floating line sink but it's harder to make sinking line float
>>
>>764823
For my 6 wt rod I will sometimes use up to 5 ounces of split shot on my 3x tippet

If your doing mostly top water get floating, streamers get sinking. You can use either or really, just depends on what you use most.

Buddies caught the front end of the shad run, and stripers are being caught as I type this. Excited to get home.

I'm not sure
If I get sink tip I can get nymphs, eggs, streamers, etc deeper but I can't make it float. I definitely do wets more than dries but if I need a wet to go deeper I can put shot on my tippit
But can I make sink tip line float?
Probably but I might not get it to sink again

I think I'll get floating line and if I have to get deeper I'll run some splitshot or something

I have the graphite tip from a sharp pencil stuck in my leg for the past 20 years. If you don't immediately get a big infection, you will be fine.
>>
>>765284
That's an "inorganic" foreign object; that spine is going to try to rot and decay in him and cause infection regardless of how clean he keeps it as long as that spine is there

Best case scenario he gets a small cyst and the spine comes out with the pus worst case he gets gangrene or similar and either loses his hand or gets blood poisoning and dies.

probably me but out of context. I doubt they'll twist and bend and die on freshwater. I wouldn't trust the salt fish of a lifetime to one, even if it was rated 50 or 75#.

>>
>>765301
You do have to keep an eye on them after some use though. Snap swivels will allow you to get lazy with knots and stuff and before you know it the snap will be bent and open up on a nice largemouth.

>>765429
Cut the bluegill up and use it as cutbait if you think it's too large. A 40lb+ blue/flathead has a BIG mouth, they can easily eat a 7" bluegill. I know some guys who run trot lines around here and they use ~5" bluegill normally.

This is the seaguar smackdown 8 strand braid vs regular power pro. Both are 20# line strength, but the seaguar is significantly smoother and thinner. Pretty crazy. Cant wait to see how the line strength holds up.

Power pro is up top, seaguar is on the bottom.

I'm new to this stuff, but the small areas I've fished so far I can NOT use any odd bait to get a Catfish.

I live in NE Ohio and the several ponds/reservoirs I've been too, whether it be clam meat, shrimp, chicken liver, or certifiedâ„¢ catfish bait, the bluegills just nip and tear at it until there's nothing but a bare hook.
>>
>>765443
Hmm.. I have good luck here in TX using CJs Bait Co punch bait for channel cats. If bluegills are tearing your bait up then you're not getting it deep enough into open water I'd say. You need to get it far enough away from cover that the bluegill are afraid to go out there due to the fear of being eaten by a bass or other predatory fish.
>>
>>765445
what is "deep"? I'm anchoring at maybe 20-25ft of water
>>
>>765446
Damn, you shouldn't be having much trouble out there. Maybe the ratio of predatory fish : prey species is out of whack and those places are covered up with prey species.

Bluegill are some pretty good eating if you can catch enough that are decent sized. Here in TX there's no limit on the size or number you can keep of sunfish species so you can catch 100+ and have a big fish fry if you want. I dunno what else to tell you, our reservoirs and rivers are full of big bass and lots of blue catfish that eat any prey species that are brave enough to venture out into open waters. The only places I have issues with sunfish eating my bait is when I'm fishing in less than 6' of water near the shore or in a shallow cove.
>>
>>765446
That's suprising. Wouldn't expect little shit bluegill to nibble at the bait out there.
>>

>>
>>765452
>>765450
alright just gotta keep at it.
other questions, it's about 50f out right now after a light rain, would that be in the realm of "worth a shot" or "don't even bother" when it comes to fishing?

finally, is there any sort of legality(in terms of fishing license) for fishing on private property?
To clarify my street has several large ponds that aren't on anyone's property, just part of the development right now.
>>
>>765462
I've caught countless fish during and after rain, but depending on the target fish, they might not bite at all because all that good shit that got knocked off of the trees.

As for fishing on private property, going on private property without the owner's permission is trespassing. However, the ponds you're talking about don't seem to be on private property, so go for it.
>>
>>765462
In TX you can fish on private ponds / lakes without a fishing license or any length / bag limits provided you have the owner's permission. I'm sure that varies state-to-state though.

Eh, I bought a cheap old deckboat with a motor and trailer for $1500 off of craigslist, put another $1500 into fixing it up (had to tear out the deck down to the hull, put in new treated beams, made a new deck out of plywood, made a new console out of plywood, replaced all the hatches, rewired everything, new power pack for the motor, replaced all bench cushions using plywood, foam, and marine vinyl, etc.). It's not pretty or fast but it's a great fishing boat that's really stable and has plenty of room for 3-4 people and their gear. I have one friend that goes fishing with me a lot and several other friends that we bring along sometimes. Most of the others aren't regular fishers but they still have a lot of fun when they go. Just try inviting some of your friends along one afternoon when the weather's nice. Hell, bring a charcoal grill along and cook up some burgers and hot dogs while you're at it and maybe bring some beers if you're all drinking age and it's legal to consume alcohol where you're fishing.
>>
>>765549
that sounds like a plan, and awesome job fixing up that boat. I need to learn how to get a skillset like that. What did you do to proof the plywood?

Well the beams under the deck got replaced with treated 2x6's and 2x8's, I got rid of all the foam blocks under there because they were just completely saturated with water (previous owner had left the boat out in the weather obviously) and weren't going to do any good as "emergency flotation material" anymore, they would actually be doing more harm than good by holding moisture down there. The deck itself I used 3/4" untreated exterior grade BC plywood and applied 3 coats of exterior paint to it before I cut it to fit and installed it. If I left the boat outside in the rain and weather then it would probably rot eventually but since I keep the boat under a roof then it should be fine for a long time. Of course I pull all the plugs on the boat when I haul it out of the water so any water that did make its way under the deck drains out and everything dries out. The console and hatches were all made out of 1/2" untreated exterior grade BC that I applied several coats of paint to as well.

I don't have a good picture of the entire boat but here's a buddy of mine with a lake record channel cat that he caught on a fishing trip we took several months back. He had just gotten out of the Navy and hadn't been fishing in a long time so my buddy that I go fishing with all the time and I took him out to drink some beers and mess around on the lake... We had pulled a couple hundred channel cats out of that lake before this trip and he ended up catching a bigger one than we had ever pulled in from that water, funny how that works.

No problem man. The worst thing that happened with it was the 3rd time I took it out I had hauled it about 50 miles to a lake for a camping / fishing trip and when we put the boat in the water all the motor did was turn over and never started. I had no spark... It had rained heavily the night before while we were camping and was REALLY humid the next day and that apparently let some moisture get into the power pack and fried it so we had no boat for fishing that weekend. After some troubleshooting with a multimeter I determined that the power pack was bad and ordered a new one and it's run great ever since. The motor is a 1974 70HP 2 stroke 3 cyl Triumph so I'm sure that'll blow on me some day but that's just something I'll have to deal with when it happens. The boat is a 1975 model and is in pretty good shape overall since I reworked it. I think it's pretty neat to scoot around the lake in a 40+ yr old boat that I paid all of $3k for. It beats the hell out of paying upwards of $30k for a new "fishing boat". It's not like the fish care what kind of boat you're fishing out of to be honest.

Today was the walleye opener here in Minnesota (bass doesn't open until the 27th). It was 34F when I got to the lake this morning.
>>
>>765842
I'd try fishing the worms on the bottom first. It also wouldn't hurt to get some slip floats and vary the depth from 2ft down to 10ft using a float stop. You just gotta try everything until you start getting bites. You also have the possibility of catching carp when you're fishing worms on the bottom in deeper water.
>>
>>765851
I don't think there is carp(none that I have seen) there are a dozen or so Koi, but I would really rather not try and catch them
>>

Good question. I think it's fairly deep because it took a couple seconds for my lure to hit the bottom. Bass are still spawning here so there should be a few up shallow.

Burr...

I'm really glad I started using Texas rigged stuff more though. The fishing down here is quite a bit different then when I was in Illinois.

With cooler water in IL, I could almost always just fish spinners and crankbaits in the afternoon when bass come closer to feed. Here in South Florida, I rarely catch bass on spinners and cranks besides January and February. Kinda sucks since I love my spinners, but the snakeheads, Mayans, and bluegill will still hit them at least.

For the mono backing, I don't do much, like just enough to coat the spool with 1 or 2 layers.

And NetKnots.com is great for knots. For splicing line, I normally do the Uni-Uni knot. I know others here like the FG or Albright but one of those is stupid complicated, can't remember which.

For braided line to tackle, Palomar knot all day.

Also, for the mono backing to the spool, use an arbor knot. And make sure you keep some tension on the mono and braid while you spool it up.

Just debating which lake to go to...

I have two in mind, right across the street from eachother. One has produced some big bass for me but I have seen other people fishing there sometimes. That lake has an interesting shape where there are lots of decent spots to hit from shore and the vegetation is incredible for fish to hide.

The other lake is slightly larger but square so I haven't found the good spot in the 2 or 3 times I went there but it's more hidden and novody ever fishes there and I know there are big bass since the vegetation is pretty good.

I think I will hit the big square one first.

Water temp changes a lot slower than air temps. Depends on the size of the body of water too. But if you had a stretch of 70F sunny days for a week or two, it should take a few days before the water temp really starts going down.

Where you at? I can't stand those weather changes. So glad I left Chicago. This time of year, a cold front means a high of 78F while a warm front is highs of 88F. Ocean temps never allow it to get too crazy.

What Peps said + look at capacity. Say you have 150 yds braid and your reel holds 250 yds o that diameter. You want to back enough mono so your braid fills your spool properly. Mono is cheaper than braid so on larger reels this is kind of important. Currently spooling an 8000 series that hold like 500yds of 50# braid so I have to math to figure out mono...

I read about countersinking here but could not get it to work properly. The concept is there are 3 ways to present live/organic or soft baits. 1) suspended, or a few feet off the bottom, 2) on the bottom, or 3) countersunk into the bottom several inches. I had trouble in determining how deep the bait was actually in the ground because so much mud was kicked up. My sink pole was only 20' long when extended so I was limited to 18 feet or less of water. I'm going to try again today but any advice is appreciated.

Also for braid to hook I like the double uni
>>
>>766065
6'6" medium action ugly stick
Shakespeare excursion reel
6 or 8 pound test, 10 if you'll be going after bigger stuff more (bass, catfish, carp, pike/pickerel etc)

Then whatever tackle suits the fishing you're doing

I've yet to meet someone who says it wasn't worth learning after they get their first fish on fly
>>
>>766154
Honestly I fish sub surface more than anything
There are more nymphs and minnows at any given time than hatching insects
But when there are hatching insects anything else is a waste of time
>>
>>766161
Oh for sure. Must've missed it. I'll probably be out a lil bit tomorrow, takin the day off work to get to a doc appt in the morning and then not shit afterward.

>>766172
>braid to hook
>double uni
That's the line to line knot nigga. And Palomar is the superior choice for braid to hook or lure anyway.

>>766174
>fly fishing
I think it's too early for you skid.
>>
>>764760
Fuck, finally saw this post. It's like the one post I missed. Oh well.

I would be down to fish a lil tonight but I have some shit to do until like 7pm. Plus got barely any sleep last night so I could get out early today.

Early afternoon tomorrow?

Better for mono imo

Oh he said fly fishing? One second

I've got work from 5am-9am so along as its after 9 I'm down.

How do you convince someone who thinks fishing is dumb, that its something amazing?

Basically he thinks fishing is a means to an end, not a sport or something done for enjoyment.

I have similar feelings about hunting(bow or Rifle) but I think there is a discernable difference between hunting and fishing.

Get an eagle claw fly rod of the appropriate length and weight
Then you need a reel
I heard good things about the okuma cascade and am getting one but can't say that for 100% sure it's good

Then get the appropriate fly line

Lets say you got a 5 wt rod

A good go to is a 5 wt line
If you Will only be fishing really tight areas where 15 -20 feet will be your maximum cast consider 6wt line to load the rod with less line
And If you need distance more than anything consider a 4 weight line so you can loal the rod correctly with more line out

I could say more and give specific models and stuff if I knew more about what you're doing (where you are fishing what you want to catch etc)
>>
>>766236
It depends on hunting
If you just want to kill something and bring back the antlers you're a prick
If you are taking it for food that's a whole other story
>>
>>766245
I won't go into semantics of comparing a fish to a mammal, I just have this notion that the sport of fishing, there is a certain level of "fairness", a connection between man and fish, where Hunting is one sided

Damn, that's a crazy shift. I'm thinkin maybe around 1pm or 2pm, try n get somewhere down south a little before traffic gets crazy.

I'm still just down here exploring around Pembroke Pines. Only problem is so many of these lakes are those quarry type lakes where there is a shelf of 2' deep water that goes ~10' out, and then it drops off really deep. It doesn't make for great vegetation and I have trouble finding good spots. If anything, I just get those Mayans hitting my lure as I drag it up the drop off.
>>
>>766251
I'll agree on the "fish can't be compared to mammals" but I disagree on the one-sidedness of hunting but here and now are not the time or place for it
Either way I'd say the only way to change that other person's mind is to take them fishing and let them see how fun it is
Make a deal
"If you come fishing with me once and catch a few fish and you hate it I'll never bug you about it ever again, But I'll bet you'll like It"
>>
>>766255
I bet he works fast food like me
They'll give you weird shifts
I've worked everything from 5-9 to 5-2 and a few times 6-4
Fast food is the most inconsistent work ever
I've had 40+ hour weeks next to 15 and under hour weeks
>>
>>766101
hey Pepsi! nothing wrong with yums, all I can afford mate. shame on the fucks that litter.
>>
>>766281
Yum is fine, just don't trash the fucking lake and make the rest of us look bad.

>>766262
I can't stand those stupid short shifts. I remember those when I was in HS working at Petsmart. Waste 5 nights out of the week for <25hrs. Hell no. I could work that in 2 days when I was at my restaurant job if I wanted to. Boss man would give me anything I wanted since if I was there, he didn't have to worry about the place burning down.
>>
>>766118
lmao if you saying the fish in the pic is 2-2.5 nice try bud
>>
>>766153
that's awesome. haha nice catch.

I see we have a professional photograph analyzer goy here.

Def a solid 2lb'er, Believe it or not, I have seen a lot of largemouth bass in my life. Pretty easy to tell when you are holding them IRL as opposed to a close up cellphone pic at a shitty angle.

A 2lb largemouth isn't that big anyway, especially if it has a little gut.
>>
any of yall ever fished a mepps comet minnow?
>>
>>766286
Luckily I work mornings so those stupid short shifts only mean I get on the lake faster
I'm looking for a better job Though but given my minimal skills and qualifications

I can weld but I'm not certified so jo one wants me for that

Yes

I haven't really had better luck with them compared to regular Agilas. Plus the minnows spin around so if you're trying to make a realistic presentation, the minnow doesn't quite swim like it.

I would rather do other anon's idea of replacing the treble on a Mepps with a worm hook and rig up a Gulp minnow or something to it. Or just run a regular Mepps Agila.

For Mepps? #1 is the natural squirrel tail brown-black-white skirt with a silver or gold blade. They sell those everywhere. If I want something brighter, yellow skirt with either silver blade or the firetiger blade.

The first ones I mentioned are the only ones that use actual squirrel tail hair I think, and it seems to have better motion in the water than the colored skirts.

Also that brown skirt one with the chartruese blade was great for the short time I had it but then it got snagged. I have never seen another one of those. The bass here love the chartruese so much for some reason.

I don't think I had the Blue Foxes when I took that pic, but those Vibrax spinners aren't bad for night or really cloudy water when you want a bunch of noise and vibration. Worth grabbing one if you see them.
>>
>>766346
The bodies are made of xps polystyrene and coated with epoxy. The kermit and the brass is tied on a 4/0 hook, the blue one on a 6/0 and the smallest on a #1 hook.

>6/0 hook

Wow, those are bigger than I thought. Then I looked at the pic again and saw them sitting on top of a coffee mug. You just going for largemouth or what? Are they pretty sturdy?

I wish I could still get away with topwaters but these bass are just too lazy with the warm water now. I get the occaisional gar to take a shot at topwater stuff but they never get a good mouthful of them. I need to find a place where I can get the sneks or peacocks on poppers.

That's because chartreuse is the GOAT color
