I've got a rat terrier mix that randomly showed up at my parent's house a few years ago when he was a puppy. He's a really good squirrel dog, all I have to do is walk through the woods with a .22lr or a 12ga shotgun and wait for him to tree one and start barking. He's also helped me trail deer and pigs that I've shot but he is utterly useless when trying to hunt rabbits. He's really quiet and well behaved most of the time, I take him with me pretty much everywhere I can.

Well what really helped was taking him along when I went deer / pig hunting. I'd taken him squirrel hunting a lot beforehand so he knew what a gun was and was used to chasing a wounded squirrel or locating a dead one after I shot. Once he actually saw a pig get shot, run off a ways, and die then he knew what was up and it was pretty easy to get him to follow a blood trail after that. He's not as good as a trained scent-hound but he's found maybe 4 deer and pigs for me over the last couple of hunting seasons, he just has a hard time staying on the right trail if there were a bunch of animals there when I made the shot.

Yeah, I got pretty lucky with him. Like I said, he just showed up at my my parent's place one day. I was helping my dad work on a tractor, walked around the corner of his shop and this little guy was back there just trotting along. He almost froze and almost bolted when he saw me but I crouched down and called him over and he cautiously approached me. He had no collar and was pretty skinny so we gave him a little food and left him outside thinking he'd go back home or something but he never did. I took him to the vet a few days later to check for a chip and he didn't have one so we ended up keeping him.

Well I actually had a beagle growing up, he was a great dog. They're a true scent hound so you probably won't have much luck hunting squirrels with him but they're pretty much the go-to breed for rabbit hunting, they'll follow a trail and bay for hours. For rabbit hunting you'll want to take the dog out, let him get on a trail, and then just try to get ahead of the dog and rabbit and let the dog run the rabbit right by you. They won't normally push the rabbit too hard and just maintain a slow and steady pace while trailing so the rabbits respond by running a ways and then hiding in some bushes or something until they hear the dog getting close again and then they'll run off a ways to another hiding spot and that just repeats until the dog gives up. The rabbit will pretty much just make a big loop (they won't leave "their territory" unless they feel REALLY pressured) and a good beagle will be able to trail a rabbit around that loop 2-3 times. If you miss your chance to shoot the first time then you can wait for a while and the dog should run the rabbit back around eventually.
I'm not sure how to really train a dog to follow the trail of a wounded animal, I just got lucky when my dog picked up on it on his own.
My beagle knew what a gun was and would get really excited when I grabbed a .22 and started heading out the door because he knew it was hunting time and he was ALL about hunting. The beagle was also good about finding raccoons, possums, and skunks while we were tramping through the woods so keep that in mind. Look up some good skunk-spray remedies and keep the supplies on hand. We always kept some large cans of tomato juice and had another recipe that used hydrogen peroxide so we also kept several large jugs of peroxide handy.

Border collies are insanely clever, so she'll pick stuff up really easily. Basic things like come, sit, stay, drop for a start but then more advanced stuff like 'backup' in case there's danger ahead, 'get behind', 'freeze' and maximum roaming distance.
One tip as well, give her an /out/ blanket of some sort and train her to sleep on that when you're outside. That'll keep her off the cold ground, but also make it easy for her to understand whether you want her to sleep in your tent, near the fire, or whatever.

This will make it harder to train her. Sleeping and eating are two ways in which dogs determine hierarchy. I know I'm going to get deluged with anecdotal evidence to the contrary, and you can certainly still train dogs that sleep with you, but if you really want them to train well then they have to have very clear boundaries, and they have to know that you are the master.
You can still be kind to them of course but I would recommend eating before her, not giving her human food scraps (only dedicated dog food), and not letting her on your bed/couch.
But if all you really want is a pet then go for it.

I know a lot of people who run hog dogs here in TX. One guy I know has 13 dogs and at any given time at least 1/2 of those are too cut up to take out hunting (he runs dogs pretty much every weekend). It's pretty insane the damage a hog can do to a dog. I've been at the vet's office when guys bring in a hog dog that's been ripped to shreds, not a pretty sight... The dogs live for the hunt though, it's not like the guys have to force them to do it. Sorry - I got a Labrador/Staffy Cross - he would SMELL his way along tracks - the narrowest barely visible Wallaby track and he was faultless - Used to Go Geocaching with him when he was young[er] - he always 'see' the easier track.

Planning on taking my dog to the Boundary Waters this summer. He'll be 8 months when we go. I think I may take him out on a lake before we go to see how he does in it. Nervous about the portages, gf may need to have him on the leash while I carry the canoe.

So I had to euthanize my doggy over the weekend, she had cancer. Probably not gonna get another dog for a month or two, just to let the dust settle.
What is a good breed? She was a husky/german shepherd/lab mix, she was fun and playful but not the most cooperative. I've been thinking about getting a Caucasian Shepherd, they're super cute and fairly hardy. However, they're not exactly a common dog in NC, so I don't think that'll work out. What's a good /out/ breed that's easy to train, is smart and cute, and not super rare?
My mum wants to get a rotweiller, which I absolutely hate. One of our first dogs was a rotty and he was batshit. Before that we had a belgian shepherd, who had a grass allergy so we couldn't keep her when we moved. Other breeds she wants is a pitbull or a corgi. I don't really know what she's looking for in a dog other than four legs and a tail tbqh, but I know that I want a reliable companion. I'm not that great with people, and my dog was an emotional support for me. I wouldn't want a dog that I couldn't bond with, either because it's too violent and scary like a rotty or a pitbull, or bc it's a cunty little bitch dog like a corgi. My stepcousin has a chihuahua and it's the most aggressive little shit I've ever met, and I get the feeling that's p common with smaller dogs.

I'm the guy who posted the golden earlier in the thread. She is the sweetest dog I've ever seen and probably the only living creature that is always, always happy to see me. Every morning I feel so guilty going to work because she is sad when I leave. I know it's a meme dog but my vote is for the golden.
Word of caution though, my golden has cancer. It's common in the breed. Might want to avoid if you don't want to deal with the same thing again.

I don't think I can go through cancer with another dog, at least not for a few decades. I'm sorry to hear about your dog, hopefully she has a good life for however long she has left. If you decide to get her put down, seriously consider not being present when they do it. I chose to be there, and the last thing she did before going to sleep was look me in the eyes with concern, not because she was scared but because I was crying. I'm glad I could be there for her, but holy fuck it hurt so much feeling like I was betraying my best dog friend

They make pretty good pets and are no trouble at all hunting. They're happy to sit at the bottom of a high seat for a good hour+ waiting, same with lying prone with the rifle, they just lie nearby and wait.
I got this guy almost a year ago, and I take him hiking every chance I get. He only listens when he wants to though, so I can rarely let him off the leash. inb4 "le train your dog". He came from a shelter and has a mind of his own. The people at the shelter said he was a stray, so who knows how long he was on his own for or how many owners he's had. He has really bad separation anxiety as well.

I have trained him in quite a few things, it's just that sometimes he gets easily distracted or won't listen. Other times he's good and will respond. Every time we leave the house together, I make him sit and stay before I put his harness and leash on. I've been doing this since the day I got him, and it still takes 5 minutes or more to get him to calm down and listen. I think he has ADD. I've had other shelter dogs that were immediately loyal and listened to me with very little training. This guy just had a different life beforehand, so I think that's why he doesn't listen well.

I want to get a dog so bad, but living in the dorms has prevented me so far, hopefully though I can next year when I live off campus. I would really like to either get a wolfhound (swede or norge) or a Shiba Inu meme dog. I guess if I cannot afford either when they become avaiable I'll just get a healthy dog from the humane society. As of now my parents have two dogs I could take camping and hiking. old doggo died very suddenly a couple months back. She wasn't quite as excited about going outdoors as she used to be, but thought she was just starting to get old. Turned out she had really aggressive cancer.
Got a new pupper a couple weeks back though, cause I hate being with a doggo companion. Gonna have to teach him all about the outdoors as he was previously a city stray.
