I guess the Lafayette loop is neato, the Gulf trail from Madison-Washington is out of this world. The ice caves and rock scramble up King Ravine is pretty badass. Almost kilt me and I was in my prime.

I finally got up to the Whites early last month, had a kickass time going up Lafayette (pic). A group coming up the south side of the franconia loop (falling ice trail iirc?) told me to avoid going down it, so I ended up going from the lafayette to lincoln, and then back to lafayette in shitty conditions. Definitely a learning experience but a lot of fun too.

crikey that must have been surreal
>>
lol, 4,000 feet...I use to live at 6,000.
>>
>>745653
it's not the elevation itself anon, it's all about the geology and the views and weather. the white mountains are some pretty hard climbing, pretty brutal weather, and they're just generally fantastic.
>>
Ayy, I didn't expect to see a thread about NH on /out/
I've been considering going on a camping trip in the White Mountain National forest, are there any good spots there in particular worth checking out?
>>
Moosilauke is easily my favorite hike. All kinds of old stone structures on the summit, plus it's Alpine
>>
>>745644
yea it was definitely interesting. This was my first time up there, I would've felt a lot better had there been visibility like in OP's pic.

>>745664
I did Moosilauke too! That one was a lot of fun, though the road being closed in winter tacks on a ~3 mile road walk to your climb. I went that one week in march when it was 60 down below but with wind chill up high it was something like -20F.

I live now at 7,000

Yeah, but it's much harder climbing 1,000 feet at 8,000 feet than it is climbing 1,000 when you're starting at 500 feet. I couldn't believe how easy it was doing a few mountains back east after leaving at elevation in the West

I'm about 2/3 of the way done with my 4000 footers, I've gotten most of the chains done now I have a lot of scattered ones to work on.

I think Franconia Notch is my favorite place up there. Lots of great little easy hikes down below (Indian Head, The Flume, Basin, Lonesome Lake, etc.) and then you've got the Lafayette. My usual route is up Old Bridal Path and then down Falling Waters.

I've generally gone up in August or early Fall so I can't speak much for the extreme weather except for one time I shot up to Greenleaf hut and got this photo.

As I was getting ready to leave two backpackers approached from the summit of Lafayette. After talking to them they said they had stayed the night at the Garfield ridge campsite and had almost frozen to death due to the cold weather the night before. They didn't know what the temperature was but I had clocked in -12 down in Franconia Notch, I can only imagine what they might have faced.
>>
>>747096
weren't you supposed to have them all done by the end of last year? also i agree, the franconia area is just aces

If you're going for the AMC club and want a patch then sure but I've just been keeping track of which ones I've climbed for fun.

I also highly recommend the Flume in the winter, it's a cool spot and it's not the tourist trap it is during the foliage season.

Yeah it can be wild, I was lucky enough to witness one a couple of years ago. Did you get to see it at night? Ours rolled in just before sunset so there was some really dramatic lighting but I would have loved to sit in the dining hall in the dark and watch the horizon light up.

Here's a photo of the sunset from the top of Monroe. Me and my brother stayed at the Lakes for a couple nights two summers ago and ran up Monroe after dinner to watch the sun go down. It was beautiful
>>
>>751592
nah, people walk up it all the time with their skis. It's an eastern mountain so only takes about 2 hours base to peak. Not like real mountains out west.
