I obviously bring my deer rifle along when I'm going on hunting trips, but I'm considering getting something like pic related for solo hikes.
Just in case I ran into a weirdo or had to end myself as starvation set in.
Are there laws against carrying in most state forests?

Unless it is illegal in general in your state, the open transportation of firearms is perfectly legal in national forests. There's only a handful of states that don't allow open carry and I don't think any of the ones that do care about if you carry in the forest or not. If you're doing long distance hikes and you're not in bear country, I'd recommend a compact, polymer frame pistol than a revolver. More ammo and less weight.

State Parks out west allow a .22lr revolver specifically and you can't shoot it unless you have to dispatch a snake in your boot or fend off a backwoods serial killer.

I usually go to national forests and unless I go there to shoot, I just bring my .38 revolver for no particular reason, just because fuck carrying around a 10lb longarm for no reason.

I carry an old bolt action 12 gauge. 2 in the magazine and one in the chamber. Never really shot anything but hogs with it.

Let's say I was hiking the AT and passing through towns and such. Would I need a special permit for that? I would just keep the thing hidden in my pack probably

I think it depends on the state. I could imagine the southern states not giving a damn, but I feel like the more north you go you'll run into butthurt.

Of course you'll be keeping it in your pack the whole time so no one would know
