Hey /out/, I'm planning a camping trip with my friends next weekend and i'm going to be doing it in a state owned forest that is like an hour away from me. What are some essentials that I should bring? What are some things you always bring? I've gone camping before with my family but never anything that wasn't on a designated camp ground. Any tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

That's a really broad question. Are we talking about car camping? Or are you hiking out to a remote site? What sort of gear do you already have? What sort of gear do your friends have? Are you going to be sharing a tent? Or are you making individual shelters?

If you're going to be hiking any significant distance you'll want to plan what you pack as a group to cut down on redundancy and lighten everyone's load a bit. For example, no need to hump three or four stoves and water filters, and half a dozen pots that aren't going to be absolutely necessary. You'll also want to plan meals together that take into account what sort of cooking and serving equipment you'll have on hand. Otherwise you'll get there and have to improvise.

Long BBQ lighters.
Extra money
Extra water
Extra batteries
Extra alcohol
Something to keep yourselves entertained (condoms, porn, deck of cards, hobby gear, etc) when there's nothing else left to do before bed.

We're not really camping out at a remote sight, it's not that far away from civilization at all really. I have most of the basic gear we need and my friends have pretty much nothing. And I think we will be sharing a tent. Unless I have more than one, i would have to check for sure.

So you will have to carry all your gear to the site then, not car camping? What do you have for a pack?

Just normal book bags pretty much. nothing fancy or anything. We won't be walking too far to the sight so we didn't feel the need to get new bags.

So essentially you're car camping and you'll be making multiple short trips to lug all your stuff out to the site.

If that's the case you really shouldn't have much trouble. Since weight and volume aren't concerns you can have all sorts of comforts and regular household stuff.

Just make sure everyone has a spot in a tent, that everyone has a pad of some kind to get them off the ground, that everyone has a decent sleeping bag, and that your tent's rain-fly doesn't have any holes in it. Other than that just plan every step of your meals ahead of time and don't fuck up the forest.
