How did people drive without phones back then?

I forgot my phone when I drove to work a few days ago, I was freaking out that somehow if something happened I'd be stranded without communication.
>>
>>14723955
With both hands on the controls, looking where they were going, and not constantly distracted.

Also, we had these things called 'payphones' where you paid a small fee to make a telephone call.
>>

At one point men had these magical sacks that dangled under their penis. This magic sack contained manlinessium, a now rare substance which allowed the men to do things like take care of themselves and be brave.

Sadly, the worlds supply of manlinessium is drying up fast.

My uncle was just telling me a story about how he was on a long motorcycle trip by himself back in the 80s. He stopped about 10 miles from home to take a leak, and when he got back on his bike, his chain snapped 2 miles later.

He was on a rural Texas road. No payphones, nobody out and about on this particular day. He simply had to walk his ass home.

I'm more amazed at how people were able to navigate effectively before satellite nav/phone navi. I actually had to go out and about without my phone yesterday to try and find an auto paint shop (there are none in my town) since google maps suxxx

what I always wonder is how people found anything

I always use my phone to navigate my ass around, and sometimes I can't even find those small businesses that are stuffed in the crack of ass somewhere.

what a time to be alive
>>
i'm immobile without my phone!
>>
Back in the day people drove around just for fun and found new roads and places. So basically they got out of their house and explored. And if you didn't know where something was you asked someone who does. And like the other poster said, if you breakdown in the middle of no where then you start walking til someone picks you up. Or you get home.

I spent a good month without my phone every year. Its not that fucking hard.

It is hard to be thrown into an environment where you need a phone, and be without it.
Say you're going to a show, and realize you forgot your phone, and now you cant get ahold of your friends.
>>
>>14723955

You kept a city map / book in your car. If you wanted to look up a business address, you'd use the phone book at home. At times it was also appropriate to ask other drivers at stoplghts which way to whatever street.

Road atlas. I always have one in my car and I always familiarize myself with the route beforehand if I'm driving somewhere I haven't been before. Maps are easy and they're your friend. If you need to find an adress, the yellow pages are still a thing if you need to find a business, like a paint shop.

I had to pick up my sisters car one time but she didnt tell it had like no gas whatsoever so I tried making it to a station

I ran out had to push it to the side of the road and sat at a black barber shop who let me use their phone until someone came with gas

10/10 would do again

also saw a car full of Mexicans get pulled over and like 4 squad cars show up across the street

if I had a cell phone I wouldve just called and got gas delivered to me and missed out on a good time

I've never had a cellphone, and I was driving a couple of weeks ago when my clutch went out completely. I walked home, and the next day I (using my trusty landline) called the towing place closest to where I parked the car, called the nearest repair shop, asked a friend to drive me back out there, and got it taken care of. Just takes a little bit of extra effort, that's all.

>what I always wonder is how people found anything

They got directions, checked maps, read signs, and wrote things down. All else failed, they stopped and asked directions. People talked to each other back then, back before media scaremongering and crippling social anxiety.
Map-reading is a useful skill. I suggest you learn it if you want to survive away from electronics. GPS is easy to jam, and can be switched off on a whim.

I keep a road atlas in the car at all times. I've barely used it, but I've come across many a GPS or cell signal blackspot, and been dumped off motorways at night with no directions and no ability to redirect the satnav.
Otherwise, I've trained myself to navigate across the country using road signs. The satnav's only really useful for finding where I'm going, warning me about speed cameras, and navigating ridiculously complex junctions.

And there's something pleasant about being able to navigate with just a map and compass. Especially when people are either blundering around lost or cursing expensive devices, and you're able to just stroll on past, stopping to check your direction occasionally.
Orienteering compasses are fucking invaluable when wandering around, since they've got an arrow for the direction you want to go in.

>walking down a road wasting your time is considered a good thing

>>
>>14723955
We made it work out somehow. You basically looked at what you had available to you at the time, made a plan, and went from there.

What I have noticed since the advent of cell phones is that I'm less self-reliant in adverse situations and will readily call a friend and bother them with my problem

I went 4wd'ing with a younger mate and some of his mates. He's a champion but these other lads....

Not much spare water, no UHF's other than .5w handhelds, no first aid kit, basic recovery gear but no comealong or block'n'tackle just straps and jacks. I asked the driver of the young lad mobile (HiLux) where all of his spares were. He mentioned that it wasn't a big deal as his phone gets reception pretty much anywhere.

So then I asked what happens if his phone got dropped or stopped working. His response; 'Well then we're proper fucked.'

I couldn't believe it, this dude couldn't imagine what to do without phone contact to ring another lad to come and pull him out or bring water or whatever. And we were about to go up a range into a national park rainforest with no phone coverage and shithouse UHF transmission (no repeaters, tall trees etc).

Too spooky for me man, what the fuck.
>>
ITT: Normalfags who have no sense of direction. I drove 1200 miles to a friends house that I had only been to one time before without a map and didn't get lost. Maybe if you cucks spent some time outside you could survive without a phone.

Honestly it wasn't that hard, if anything now with GPS it is convenient when you're lost and saves fuel from going around circles trying to find an address. I usually drive with no GPS and try to find my way to where I'm going or find alternate routes to keep my skills somewhat sharp.

So little happens there, nobody moves. Not even the air molecules move, so it's cold.

But nah, southern Aus weather revolves around cold fronts riding on low pressure areas moving from the west to the east. Tanzania gets cold then the system fucks off to NZ where it gets colder, and another one pops up south of Western Australia, moves to Tanzania and it begins again.
