Is the Ford Focus really much less reliable than the Civic? Civic or Focus for 6k? What else is there or are these pretty much it in price range without getting something 15+ years old?

I don't know about that. I drove both. Feel about the same to me (Civic and Mazda3). Your suggestion isn't bad, in fact it's a fair car to consider, but I don't see why you have such a strong preference toward the 3. Also, I have shopped for both. Sister has a Civic, mom has a Mazda 3. Rockauto and such has less parts for the 3.
