Yes, it's not perfect, primarily with that torque dip, but why are people hating on this car? It's the most important vehicle to come out in the last decade. We're living in an age full of

>bloated, overweight designs
>ugly aesthetics
>do-everything crossovers that do nothing well
>automatic transmissions
>overpriced sports cars
>plastic engine bays that only your dealer can access for servicing
>no drivetrain variety at consumer prices
>sports cars which just chase after numbers (hp, lap times, 0-60) in a worldwide dick measuring contest

And here comes the GT86, FR-S, and BRZ

>razor sharp focus on appealing to driving enthusiasts
>sacrifices numbers to bring the fun of oversteer at safe, controllable speeds
>nice and clean aesthetics
>is selling more manuals than automatics in North America of all places
>an open engine bay that begs to be modified to your desire
>just practical enough that the average 20-something could own it as their only car
>rear wheel drive at an affordable price

This is call-back to cars like the AE86 and S13, and no more expensive when you factor inflation. This is the return of the affordable Japanese sport coupe, and people want to shit on it. Why?

Welcome to /o/, we hate everything. Here is your complimentary basket of shit to fling

The hate on /o/ started because this board is hella poor, and the price point here tripped people into screaming that it was too expensive. As far the the actual price in terms of the real world, a base FR-S costs about 26,000. An Mr-2 in 1985 MSRP's for about 11,500...which funny enough, is about 26,000 dollars in today's money.

After that, it was troll/meme bench racing.

The car has some very legitimate faults, many of which it absolutely SHOULDN'T have, and it's future/development will never be what it should have been thanks to the co-development aspect of it's birth.

In the real world, the car was successful, and wasn't shit on. It's facing a bit of a sales slump in certain areas now, but that stems more from the lack of any gen 2 car on the horizon, and the failure of Toyota/Subaru to refine and diversify the car (STi/TRD trims, the roadster we were promised but never got)

>Yes, it's not perfect
Is any car? more importantly are there any good cars out there that deserve hate for not being a BMW or Ferrari? which are also far from perfect (especially Ferrari)
>fix it again tony

>It's the most important vehicle to come out in the last decade.

Are you shitting me? that right there could potentially make people hate the car. the most important "car" to come out in the last decade as I've observed would probably be the Tesla if anything since it created the biggest stir and made people think electric cars can be cool again and is actually getting snobby people who normally buy BMWs and Mercs to consider another brand to be an elitist about (also forcing other brands to come out with their own tesla fighting cars).

As for the most important "enthusiast" car that's another story.

>ugly aesthetics
I happen to find the aesthetics of some cars on sale today quite nice inside and out but its subjective so we could argue to the moon and back.

>automatic transmissions
a lot of cheap performance cars still come with manuals though so not really worth mentioning at this point.

>overpriced sports cars
Examples? (besides europeans which are a given)

>sports cars which just chase after numbers (hp, lap times, 0-60) in a worldwide dick measuring contest

I feel like the 86 will be doing that too in the future if there is ever a faster model and when it does you might be one of those people doing the dick measuring
>"guys lets not fight over laptimes"
>"possible 86 trim being faster than a corvette stingray or something"
>"HURR NIGGERZ MAD CUZ DEY CAN"T COMPETE WIT MUH 86!"

If the civic (type R) is getting in on the dick measuring than this car most likely will in the future too and when it does watch out for the yellow meme faces and "being this assmad" spammed to the heavens.

I like the 86 though and am glad there are more enthusiast cars but it was a little "meh" for me

I am so fucking tired of reading the im poor argument. I made 70k last year, I test drove one and the dealer was offering me private party value for my trade in ($11,000) and falling over themselves with rebates. I still walked out. Frankly I wasn't impressed with the performance compared to cars I could buy used and do maintenance on for 26k. I'm not one of those half wits that thinks everything new must be good.

Pro tip: Often times a company gets something really right, then stops making it. Often the replacement is not as good. Cars are like wine, not in the sense that they get better with age, but with age some prove to be better than others.

This might come as a shock to you, but as technology progresses, it becomes cheaper to meet previous performance benchmarks. The 86 meets the performance benchmark set by the 26 year old S13, it doesn't cost 26k to do that in today's money, the ground has already been broken. Lets be honest here, the car is for guys that want to be nostalgic but don't have the guts to actually drive a 20 year old car.

The car is a failure. Only the meme-tards bought it. Nobody else is stupid enough to spend 26k on a car that makes 200hp, has no grip, looks like a shit, and has an interior out of the 90s. There is going to be one generation of this car. And just like when the fedora wearing edge lord has finished saying his piece and stormed off, when this car leaves the rest of us are going to look at each other and wonder what its deal was. Maybe we will even rejoice that the king of boring has decided to stop pushing retro bullshit down our throats and the world of sports cars can actually get on with the business of developing the next generation of sports car. The Alfa 4C is the vanguard of that.

When ultra light CRP/FRP cars become cheap enough for blue collar people to afford, the meme lords will swarm onto them, and talk them up. It is what idiots do.

Cars are fun, including stock cars. If you can't find a way to have a little fun with it that is your problem.

Some stock cars, as something you are going to drive often, offer a longer lasting novelty when compared to others. the BRZ / FR-S is entertaining for all of about 5 minutes.
>>

Great post sir. I too can afford an FR-S and I even test drove one. Although I did like it and came close to getting one I really felt like I could attain something better if I saved a bit more or just spent my money on something 2-3 years old.

Right now I'm waiting for the Abarth 124, which should be a fair bit more expensive (and provide much more excitement) but hey, by the time it comes out I will be able to afford it should I choose to buy it - and if I don't... I've opened myself up to a larger portion of the used car market by then so win/win.

For its price it's not a bad car. It lacks the refinement of the Miata but Mazda have been at that game for decades. If the Twins last as long it'll get better and better, worse, and then better again.

86/BRZ fanboys themselves are retarded. The drivers tend to be no better, either fuckwads on their P's who had their parents buy it or middle aged men who drive like it's laden with explosives that detonate at the slightest bump.

It's like anything nice. Attracts retards like flies to shit. Old Jap shitboxes are a little more obscure. You get the JAY DEE EMM BRO morons and FnF fanboys with perpetual boners over the R34 and MKIV Supra but less normies want a 180SX to drift into a ditch as opposed to 86 (muh dreem car, so sick bro) because it's old (though still stylish as fuck and with huge aftermarket support) and middle aged men need something fresh and sporty to pick up college girls half their age in.

Attacking the vehicle itself is the best way to set them off. It's like when you tell stancefags their car is ugly shit instead of calling them vaping fuckwits.

The Twins are just a casualty in the never-ending battle. They'll live, we'll at least see Toyota persist with them possibly with the S-FR to join the lineup. Subaru might drop it eventually because WRX sales.
>>
>>14425799
To add to that, it's also something in the otherwise-depleted affordable new sports car market. Lets face it, we'll probably never sit in a new AMG, M, etc. and normie dream cars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.) are even more absurd. Hell, if I had the money to burn I still wouldn't buy a supercar because I'd be worried about the damn thing getting keyed, shit on by birds, etc.

So we've got (within the wageslave /o/tist non-poorfag bus cuck price range) the 86 and BRZ, Miata, WRX, possibly the 370Z.

Of course there's always used alternatives available, but the whole point of the Twins is that they're new.

When you grow out of your late teens you will come to realize the mass media does one of two things:

A: Tells you what you want to hear
B: Tells you what they were paid to say

Reality isn't what shills say about something, even if lots of lemmings believe it. If I put you in a cared for FD or Cayman, then you drove a BRZ afterwards, it would be clear as day to you that the car emerged from somethings asshole.

If I wanted to I could either buy a new one or a used 86 or BRZ, for now possibly clean. Literally who gives a fuck? It's the closest thing to a hardtop miata, wither you like it or you dont. Most of /o/ hates almost every car.

>And the z is pigfat and slow compared to other cars in its price range
Wrong and wrong. It handles well, not as well as 30k cars built for handling and is fast in a straight line (you're deluded if you think 4.8 to 60 is slow) but not as fast in a straight line as 30-35k cars built for straight line speed.

It's a jack of all trades sports car which looks bad on paper because you can't benchrace about its handling or speed but works really well in real life.
>>
>>14427643
To clarify it's considerably faster than comparable cars built for handling and handles considerably better than comparable cars built for speed. It's just a mid point

I see more women than enthusiasts driving these.

I think that says something. It's a sportscar for people who don't want to go fast but want something that looks quick to impress their pleb friends. Much like a veloster
>>
>>14427620

2700 lbs is light for today's standards
You have shit taste if you think its ugly
How many other cars sell 50/50 manual
25k is average for a new car nowadays
Not really compared to other new cars
Drive train is a mute point, all you need is manual version and an automatic

Where do you get your information dumbass? Go to there website and it says it uses a 1.6 turbocharged engine. That thing is going to overheat at the first stop light

lol keep losing those red light pulls friend. My e39 m5 and my e38 even would stomp you everytime
>>

Wow dude you are so cool, do you race for pink slips too?
>>
>>14428367
oh i know, and no i just get lit and fuck around. But don't pretend an frs outhandles an e39 m5 either. I could literally drift circles around you.
>>
>>14428507
I'm not pretending anything. I just don't really give two shits what you think you can do with your beamers.

I swear bimmerfags are the biggest boyracers around.
>>
10 years ago, when cars in its class were getting 190-HP, it would've been a must buy. Nowadays, the few cars left in its class are putting out ~300 HP. I'm sure it slides around real easily for the drift crowd, but in terms of actual performance, you can get a much faster car for the same amount of money.
>>
>>14427447
A roadster is a 2 seater with a convertible top. An 86 has 4 seats (though the rear seats are pretty much nonfunctional and only serve to reduce insurance rates). It's a sports coupe, not a roadster or sports car.
>>
>>14428637
Actually the 86 is a sports car, it's just not a performance car.
>>
>>14428604

i see you

...no?
>>
>>14428637
Coupe is a subset of car. Sports coupe is a subset of sports car.
>>
>>14428694
According to multiple credible sources, a sports coupe is not a sports https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_car

2/3rds of the ones I see are being driven by women. The other 1/3rd are evenly split between fat white fedora lords and pineapple haired FOBs
>>

for its price, it does not perform, nor is it worth it.

looking over what it does, what it has and what it SHOULD have. this car should be sold with a base trim level and start at 15K

instead its filled with useless shit and costs too much, weighs too much, is too slow because of it, and in turn drove me away from the concept car that was more of a stripped down sports car.

i might pick one up when the resail value on the used versions go for 10K or less and they have nailed down a swap for a traditional inline 4 instead of this boxter mess.
>>
I bet if Americans had P plates/license restrictions /o/ would love this car.
>>
>>14429485
The people that hate the car are not the people it was made for, simple as that.

>/o/ consists of 12-20 year old benchracing kids who couldn't tell a turbo from a torque converter
>86 was designed to appeal to informed car enthusiasts who understand what they want in a car and driving experience

Think about it
>>

>86 was designed to appeal to informed car enthusiasts
Yeah nah yeah nah mate. Most people I know who drive them are p plater trust fund babies who couldn't tell a 240z from an fb.
>>
>>14429505
Informed car enthusiasts don't defend their choice by saying reviewers liked it.

The car is designed to appeal the memelords that think they are car enthusiasts.
>>
>>14429083
That's literally just a concept car that Toyota has stated won't be made.

>some people i don't like drive them and therefore the car itself is bad
>>
>>14429623
I don't think the 86 itself is bad mate - it's perfect if you want looks / rwd and want to have a bit of fun without 600hp, but I wouldn't buy it personally and am unsure whether it deserves to be called an "enthusiast car" or not.
>>
>>14429649
It's an enthusiast's car, but whether or not they're driven by actual enthusiasts is a different matter.

Some wanna-be racer dudebro could buy one expecting a drift monster, but that doesn't mean he's the car's target demographic.
>>
>>14429362
You must in live in the boonies or a flyover state. Try living in a major metropolitan where demand is high for used "sporty" cars and where most of the options on the market are either molested to hell and back or marked up so much it makes more financial sense to buy new.

People don't NEED new, it's just more convenient sometimes. Don't choke on those sour grapes.

Yeah I go to local 86 meets and of the 20 or so cars that regularly show up, there is 1 woman who owns her own FRS there, literally everyone else who drives it are men.

Honestly, wouldn't complain at all if more women drove it, it's always such a sausage fest.

Or the snow belt where anything more than 8 years old is a rust bucket or if it was stored during the winters and in good condition, then it's ridiculously overpriced.

Was looking at a used 350z before I bought my BRZ and a rust-free, low mileage one was going for more than 20k around here and you can't get financing on such an old car. I didn't have that much saved up and needed a car. I did find a rust bucket for 8k that needed a bunch of work that was quoted at 6k just to get it roadworthy again. At 14k, it's an easier pill to swallow but who knows what else was wrong with it.
>>
>>14430514
>Proof BRZ owners are retarded
Holy shit nigger, you think women are actually going to show up to autistic car meets?

You can get one for 5k in the west. Don't be a bitch, buy a plane ticket and buy one. It is an adventure.

You'd be surprised, women are as interested in the social aspect as men are. At our local Corvette meets, roughly half of the cars are owned by women. The number of female twin drivers I see on the roads more or less matches what I see at the meets.

Guess this is different depending on where you live. You guys who see a lot of women drivers, are you all in the south?
