That's a seasonal thing for me and there's only one thing that beats a 4WD in those conditions and it's a FWD.
Before you mindlessly dismiss this, have a think about it. FWD you just "point and click". Point the fronts where you need to go and just floor it. And drive coming from the rear makes it harder for the front to achieve its goal.
