Snowed yesterday in Michigan and Ohio. Got into the single digits around Chicago, but it was in the teens near Detroit. Saw about two dozen trucks broken down between Toledo and Detroit this morning, so I'm guessing it's the guest cold snap of the season out here.

That was my tank pressure. It was dumping air as fast it was compressing it so the pressure wouldn't build. Usually stop with the application needle around 30psi, but it goes as high as pic related. (Middle gauge in the second column from the right)

I was in NE and it was in the singles. Drove through IA, for several hours it was between 0 and -2. Now in OH, 13 degrees.
Speaking of Ohio, I got pulled over on the Ohio turnpike. The guy was pretty nice, no violations, but he complained about my windshield cellphone mount. He also asked me if I had any shotguns, which leads me to believe that he that my guitar case was a gun case... which was probably why I got pulled to begin with. He checked my logs and let me go pretty quickly.

So do companies and owner/operators even use cb radios on the road anymore or is that something that got played up in convoy and smokey and the bandit?
Asking because when I was working with a hauler company doing tomatoes (I was the guy who set out markers on where to turn in the dirt roads and direct the drivers on where to drop the empties and which set had been sitting the longest) and I got issued a cell phone with ptt and inacurate phone numbers.
Also what's your record haul that you delivered without getting over weight? Iirc we had one trailer set that made it to the cannery ring in at 126thousand.

I've got my radio on all the time and it's helped out a lot by giving me advance warning of problems ahead. Occasionally you run across good conversations between trucks heading your way, and not long ago a particularly gregarious driver got I65 karaoke night going, but most of the time it's just verbal dreck spewed over the airwaves.

Ah, was just curious because the only truck that had a cb in it still when I was working for that hauler was the mechanic's field repair rig and an older cabover with a coat hanger being used as an am/fm antennae since they'd pulled all the cb's and replace them with a small mountain of cell phones.

Non trucker here, what's the standard procedure when shit like that happens? Do you take it back to the loaders or do you have to basically park and gaurd it like an angry goose till you can deliver?
If you have to guard it do you get extra hours, or is it a situation where your docked pay for not being on time despite it being entirely the fault of the forklift drivers?

lol, this was me a few days ago
I don't think hes trying to adjust his tandems... I think his tandem brake shoes are frozen to the drums and his trailer brakes aren't disengaging. Or perhaps his trailer air line is frozen.
I believe he is trying to jostle his tandem wheels free from the brakes, but because he's on ice, the wheels just slide.
I learned some valuable lessons that weren't covered during my OTR training from doing this:
>never set your brakes in freezing conditions, find a level spot to park so you won't roll
>always carry a hammer so you can bang on your brake shoes to get them to disengage when frozen
I set my brakes and passed out. 10 hours later its 5 degrees and I'm stuck, parked on a slab of ice. I poured alcohol into the air line, onto the brake shoes, tried rocking back and forth, banging on my shit with a hammer etc. Six hours later, I was still stuck, even with my locking differentials. Never again, I said.

When I fairy trucks around our little yard, the first day I did this it was almost all 10-18 speeds I was driving around. First time using a tractors clutch, first thought was holy hell it's like moving a cinder block on pavement, second thought was why in gods name do they grab at the fucking top.
Anywho, got back in my 6 speed Camaro and coudln't feel my clutch for a while. Like I couldn't feel the grab point at all, stalled right away on flat ground and had to get use to driving it again.

So, I have an interview with a smaller midsize trucking company Friday. They train new drivers without a CDL from Tennessee for free without a contract. 2 weeks to get the CDL and 3 weeks otr. The company is RE West. I have heard mixed reviews about them, so I dunno.

I had 8 weeks of one on one training with Werner after CDL school and that really only scratches the surface of everything you need to know to be cut loose solo.
Unless you're willing to go after companies too small to be arsed with DAC, it can be a career ender.

Hmm. I was really wanting not to be in a truck with a trainer over a month, but I might have a totally different opinion when/if I am horrified and driving such a big vehicle in fucking February alone in Michigan or some shit.
I was really leaning towards them for the contract-free CDL, but this has really made me pause. I've seen some that recommend them and some that say they like to flunk you out of training if you don't catch on quick and/or mess with the DAC.

I've also had it where there are three set of lights right after our yard and even though I leave with all my tires rotating with no issues - I'll have to stop at the lights and when they turn green, tires are seized up again.....at all 3 lights.
About a 1/2 mile stretch but takes me 15 mins to get through on the colder days :(

I went through Gary, so it might be a little different.
Accommodation, lunch and dinner are provided. They pay you $90 for every 8+ hour day and $45 for anything less than that.
You do 7 days of on site training.
Day 1 you do your medical test and a bunch of in processing stuff
Day 2 you do trip planning and backing
Day 3 you do backing and short drives
Day 4 you do backing and short drives
Day 5 you do backing and slightly longer drives
Day 6 you do backing and mostly highway driving
Day 7 you do flatbed securement if you're flatbed and then wait to do a DMV style test.
After that you go out with a trainer for ~2 weeks, when he says you're ready you'll go back to the terminal do another DMV style test and you're in.
At this point you they try to find you a truck and you can start working.
What division did you sign on to?

Very serious, folks will steal a whole trailer and truck if there's a hint of value. Generally the closer you are to a border the higher the risk. A lot of the time I had to check in with an entirely different set of people whose whole job was to watch me as I drove. I even had an escort leaving San Bernardino. Granted he was probably a very hopeful thief who got dissapointed after my 6th hour driving

So basically, you use air pressure to apply your service brakes. That is, you push the brake pedal, air shoots down the brake hose which acts on a diaphragm which pushes a pushrod which moves the slack adjustor which turns the S cam which pushes the shoes and linings against the drum. HOWEVER the park brake works the other way around. When the park brake is applied, there is no air pressure in the park brake circuit and a spring pushes thru the service brake diaphragm and pushes the pushrod in to apply the brakes. When you release the park brake you fill the rear half of the brake chambers with air which pulls the spring back and holds it captive so that it can't apply the brake anymore. there are a few slightly differing versions of this system but that's how the guts of it works.

I think Schneider can me a mediocre okay starter company from what I read, but I'd avoid any dollar store accounts. If they have bulk openings near you, that could be good for experience from what I read. It's hazmat tanker, so I'd keep that in mind as far as risk and complications go.
I've read good things about Abilene, Magnum, and Freymiller for otr. Abilene also has regional, but their training program is really long, for better or for worse.

Honestly? You dont. There's a few workarounds that give mixed results one that worked for me was setting it up and then pulling the sensor off the rear to confuse it. Otherwise the bunk heater only works when the truck is off. So you get to decide. Be frozen or need a jump in the morning

I did the coupling correctly - the only likely mistake on my part is that the locking jaw may not have been 100% in place, but it sure as hell looked like it was. From now on I'll be sure to tug hard enough to damn near scoot the trailer forward, and remember to trailer brake check every time (get up to ~5mph and pull trailer brake lever).

Tug testing won't solve anything. You need to learn what the locked distance on your 5th wheel is based on the distance between the inside of the handle and the outside of the top plate. Measure that, and check it along with the visual inspection of the locking jaw, and the stop rod adjustment. Unless the kingpin is worn, all of these measurements being in spec with no ice or debris in the locking jaw will ensure proper engagement of the wedge and jaw.

Yessir, track maintenance (MOW). Travel is required, but some people get lucky (or already have a CDL before they hire on) and can hold close to home after they hire out. On average I'd say it takes about 4-5 years of seniority to hold close to home.
On the other hand, you have guys that will spend an entire career on the road, but that is their choice.

I remember the naysayers all throughout cdl school and otr training saying that you'd be lucky to get 2500 miles a week, realistically, yet my first 2 weeks have each been over 3k
I spoke to a transam driver while doing laundry... he was a nub just like me. Said his otr training lasted 13 days. He said he had been stuck there for a day because he didn't know how to move his tandems back. A dock worker helped him move them to the rear for loading. Also he said he has never scaled a load before and he didn't know how.
As much as I freak out about shit, and as much as I've fucked things up even after my 3+ months of training, I can't BELIEVE a training program could be that short.

There are already class 6 hybrids. Electric motors are ideal for starting from a dead stop, but only ultracapacitors have enough juice to do anything within a reasonable weight at this point, so they only push for a few seconds before the ICE has to take over.

Driving a truck for Amazon:

Nah, they bought some trailers which led to some people speculating that they plan to buy their own trucks.
The reality is that a company as big as Amazon probably just wants trailers for extended mobile storage purposes and can't be assed to run their own trucks.
If anything they'll contract a dedicated carrier to move the trailers that they own, so you'll see a truck with Amazon in big letters on the door and "operated by wat truking llc" in small letters below it. Amazon has no influence on how wat truking runs their drivers off of Amazon property, so on a dedicated Amazon account you'd still have your ass in a cage at both ends.
