Is car visibility safety?
>>
>>14129038
Yeah.
Car safety is really fucked up now, it's a shame.
The only thing people care about is airbags and crumple zones now
>>
>>14129038

Yes

In the current gen Kia Sportage I have to move my head from side to side like an indian fucking snake charmer to see if I hav a pedestrian or a whole fucking land cruiser prado hidden behind the a-pillar every time I get close to an intersection or group of pedestrians.

And when we start talking about any terrain that isn't absolutely flat you cannot see where the road on the passenger side leads if it is going downhill off the main road. So if I don't know the road or have a passenger to direct me I have to get out and survey the fucking thing and then enter it by memory which if I do know the road I still risk a vehicle, person, fallen rock, animal, etc. being right there and I would have no clue until I hit it.

>Also OP image not using their mirrors

The B and C pillars are bad but the mirrors are nice and large so they adequately make up for it.
>>
Windows will be a thing of the past, we have cameras and screens now.
>>
>>14129038

>car pulls up beside me. Partly obscured by A pillar
>I guess there is no car there.
>>
>>14129129

I guess signs, hydrants, curbs and other small obstacles like that don`t exist.
>>

>Small windows

>>
>>14129183
Apparently. If other cars don't exist, why would anything else?
>>
>>14129111
Electronics fail constantly, due to poor construction or exposure to elements. When a window breaks or shatters, you can pop it out or put a new one in. Plus these rear-view cameras seem to have a pretty piss poor refresh rate, and the one on my dad's Prius seems to be about half a second late.
>>
>>14129211
>Electronics fail constantly

I've never had that. Maybe you just don't maintain your shit?
>>
>>14129233
Have you ever owned a VW?
>>
>>14129233
I do maintain my shit, but my cars (except my 2014 WRX) have minimal electronics.

My mother's brand new E350 had all of it's electronics fail, causing them to read wrong and spaz out when driving. Thankfully it was all under warranty, and she got a new car out of it.
>>
>>14129211

I was being ironic. Also don`t those ass cameras only work while reversing?
>>
>>14129257
I believe so, I don't drive his car enough to know.

But fuck, that half-second delay really pisses me off. You could be running over a toddler before it shows on the screen.

See, what you said is entirely the point of why we'll have screens and cameras everywhere in the coming years.

>they look cool! Buy our futuristic cars!
>3 year warranty!

3.1 years in all the screens, cameras, everything possible fails, so you buy a new one or spend thousands fixing cameras, having to send them in to authorized auto techs, instead of a few bucks and swapping a mirror yourself.

It's already a similar case with electronic mirrors. What the shit. I work in nightclubs, some drunk idiot broke the left mirror on my old Panda, I spent the grand total of 8€ and 10 minutes of my time to unscrew the old one and put the new one in its place.
>>
>>14129455
Planned obsolescence is fucking shameful and disgusting.
>>
>>14129129
It's very easy for an entire car to hide behind a c pillar or a pillar if it's farther away.

Tell me about it.
Current driving a 2016 Tuscon. Used to only drive 80's turbo hatches.

Huge fucking car, huge blind spot. A pillar is a foot wide at the dash, cant see shit.
Having a hard time staying in my lane. Cant tell if I'm center or not.

Before the lines of the road lead to the corner of my hood on the passanger side, and way left of my windshield on my side. Now both of the lines dissapear into the windshield.
Right one goes almost dead center, and left one goes a few inches right of the a pillar.
I have no fucking idea. been driving a month, still cant stay centered. fuck

shit like pic related, except I cant see the hood, and have no reference point as everything is rounded off, and no sharp, or well defined edges.
>>

Second gen Audi A6 has all the seat setting electronics in its driver side mirror. It costs a shitton even used to replace and that car is over 10 years old.

oh well, looking out the window; forgive my not being native or whatever. the thing is, why would you want windows if you aren't going to use it? I mean, you'd be much better off getting an app that allows you to see through a live cam on the front of your car and take a peek between texts, right? it's not like you're going to pay attention to the road; how else are you going to shop on the internet with your phone? or ask the babysitter how she's doing, or check the weather? plus, modern cars break fr you, don't forget that.

another reason why I like convertables so much. Tons of visibility with the top down, although it's pretty bad most of the time with it up.

I've never had any electronics fail in any of my cars. My backup camera looks like it's showing about 30 fps and it works perfectly fine in bright and dark conditions. Perhaps your dad's car's screen refresh rate is shit because it's a cheap economy car?

>>14129455
To be fair though, the electric mirrors are much more convenient especially if you want to make sure you don't hit any curbs. Also my mirrors have an electronic anti-glare thing that works extremely well. When I drive my gf's car without it in the night, I get blinded by brotrucks and other retards.

>>
>>14129746
LED is a horrible idea.
Dash is full of soft edges, so its hard to define where the line should be exactly.

I know where it is, like half an inch right of the light sensor. but it has a soft edge that makes keeping track of it difficult.
>>
>>14129761

The Tucson and the sportage are on the same platform, dimensions and general styling so I think we got each others pain down correctly.

Though I will tell you that they have pretty good turning circle and as soon as you get used to the nonexistent reference points you can fit in the tightest of parking spots. If I had yo say anything nice about the vehicle it would be that
>>
>>14129183
Then what the fuck are your mirrors for?

Or are you that unfamiliar with your car that you have no idea where it is and isn't?
>>
the rear window in my mom's ford edge is essentially useless
>>
>>14129556

Sounds like you're just shit at driving bud, I was always taught not to use reference points relative to the hood or anything like that.

Learned to drive in a lifted full size truck and drove it for months, friends always wondered how I never curbed it. The trick is to get good.

you should always be scanning and know what is around you. when you change lanes, have a good look, god help if you have to turn your head and wait a second. indicate before you do all of this and the person might even back off and let you in. don't indicate as you're moving.

Did you mean long? i.e. from bumper to bumper
>>
>>14133133
> damage caused per human driver stays the same
as more cars become self driving
human cars could be misconstrued as causing accidents disproportionate to their numbers

>argument for self driving cars
no fatigue
consistent response to stimulus
obeys the law
muh safety

>argument against
there is some precedent of automation causing problems in the airline industry
poor error handling (this is a problem inherent to programming) over prioritises one sensor to the detriment of others .eg mud dauber nest in peso tube
even if there is a manual back up' the pilot will not respond properly due to being out of practise
this has been found to be the case with airline pilots who invariably become habitually dependant on fly by wire and automated systems

but if you bring up such objections you will be labelled as a Luddite not ready for the superior future way of doing things
>>
>>14133196
There's nothing to "misconstrue".
Insurance rates are based on accident statistics and profit margin calculations.
If rates for self-driving cars increase, it's because only hoonigans will keep driving them.
>>
>>14133199
They're based on credit score and credit history and age and vehicle and region.
>>
>>14133199
>only hoonigans will keep driving them
would you trust them more than a distracted driver ?

either way the demographics will change as the majority of car users shift to self driving cars

FALSE

I have never seen a car insurance company run a credit check thorough enough to shop up on a report. Soft checks tell you jack shit.
>>
>>14133045
If you are in a passenger car and you set up your mirrors correctly, you will hardly have any blind spot if you have decent peripheral vision.
>>
>>14133248

Yeah, I am shit at driving huge fucking cars that have no road feel.

I am used to a stripped down 80's coupe with poly engine mounts and stiff springs. I can feel driving over a leaf.

New cars are way too soft. One time I had a rental, had a flat tire. Couldnt fucking tell anything was wrong. car had so little road feel, I just couldnt tell the damn tire was flat.
yeah, felt very emberaced by it.

How do you maintain a fuel gauge to prevent it breaking 3 months after brand new purchase?

How do you maintain a horn and airbag combi switch to prevent it from failing 6 months after purchase?

How do you maintain parking sensors to prevent sensor failure 1 year after purchase?

How do you maintain a window switch to prevent physical failure 4 months after purchase?

How do you maintain dash lights?

2013 Kia Sorento that has spent half it's time in the dealership for warranty repairs.

This would be less of a problem in the coming future if they were literal window replacements.

All you'd need to do is ONLY buy toyota in this new future and constantly stay alert for any euroshit that suddenly has no windshield.
