okay. I am not mechanically inclined, but I've been looking for a project car that is unique and will allow me to learn fixing cars and shit. one car I've been eyeing is a 1985 Landcruiser FJ60. would this be a good starter car for a noob like me? >>15378335
cost vs benefit.

The leaf hangers locate from factory holes in the frame and require no welding. The leaf springs I used ride great and provide a ton of wheel travel. In my case, the benefit of coils would be insignificant but they're require substantially more time, money, and effort.
>>
>>15378297
If you're an Ausfaggot for that coin, look at similar era diesel Pajeros. Anything in that price range you'll be getting great condition NLs or earlier NMs with the 2.8. You may also find higher mileage NMs with the 3.2 DiD for that money.
I would bother with pre 2.8CRDi Jeeps.

D22 Navara was offered in AUS with a ZD30. Was much more reliable than the ZD30 in the Y61 Patrol as the Navara unit was a rotary pump DI, conventional wastegated turbo and under a lot less stress than the variant in the Patrol.

YD25 isn't too bad in the D40's (Frontier?) but pretty pus in the D22. Pay particular attention to the plastic timing chain guides that fail and allow the timing chain to come off the timing gear set. And be aware that there is nothing happening below 2000 RPM, nada. On-boost and the motor feels very strong but in displacement mode until the turbocharger is doing it's thing, the YD is very soggy.

I had a D40 for a work car over two years and overall enjoyed it. Very spacious cab, and comfortable seating.
>>
>>15378297

If that's a two-point-eight I would walk away quickly. A good friend attempted to drive from Townsville to Port Headland but only got about 2/3rd's of the way. I cannot remember the cause of the fault exactly, but over half of the rocker arms were snapped with many lunched valves. She broke timing for one reason or another.

Perfect service history etc etc etc. Gave up, bought a Landcruiser and is now somewhere down the bottom of Aus.

Sounds pretty unfortunate.
From what I've been digging up and reading the VM Motori 428 is a pretty stout little motor. Infact, one of the only reasons I'd be looking at something like a KJ Cherokee/Liberty is mainly for the motor (which is used in current Holden Colorados today).
I still wouldn't pass up something Japanese though.

ive been really pondering getting a Land Cruiser, i just cant really decide which one i should get

FJ40 prices are insane, and being a car i would like to use regularly its seems like a horrible choice, but for the 50% of the time i drive it off road, it would be the best since its the shortest wheelbase

FJ60 prices are a bit expensive but not as bad as the FJ40s, i think they look the best, but for offroad use theyre worse than a FJ80, plus being carbeurated sucks for inclines

FJ80s seem to be the most capable, and the most comfortable, and prices are good, but theyre the least aesthetic to me. plus aftermarket is way better.
>>
>>15378707

I know a one-off isn't the be all and end all, but damn did that throw a spanner in the works for his holiday.

Another good mate had a Colorado where everything but the engine failed, and if it's the same engine he seemed to like it enough.
>>
>>15379773
I'll bet. Being 2/3rds toward PH would've left the vehicle in one of the least comfortable places in Aus.
It's a similar engine to the one in the current Collorado with what GM and Holden market a the "2.8 Duramax". Same engine, although I imagine with different head and manifold design.
After cross marketing the KJ Cherokee I previously mentioned as a possible family hauler, I couldn't find too many negatives other than emission components failing causing premature engine failure (something every late model diesel is potentially subject to), but that stuff easily fixed. I'm not the guy asking about the Grand Cherokee ITT.
>>15379630
Keep in mind while the J60s are pricier than they probably should be, they won't be depreciating any more. At least in Ausfaggot land they've been steadily heading up in value, and I imagine it's the same elsewhere globally. That said, J80s haven't bottomed out as similar era competitors have either, and I imagine they'll plateau before riding the supply/demand cable car.
As you said, J80s are a much more compliant ride with better suspension travel characteristics, and much better engine options. But like you, I love J60s as well.
Fucking Landcruisers, they have an economy of their own.
>>
>>15379823
tl,dr; either J60 or J80 would be a sound investment, regardless of their seemingly inflated prices. Just pick your poison.
>>
>>15379823

Only person smiling was the towie.

Dead on, just about every modern diesel is in harm's way from EGR + crankcase fumes, excess pilot and regen injection and failing DPF's. Bit of a pain now really.

At least Toyota made it easy on the 07-15 1VD 'Cruisers to fuck it all off.
>>
>>15379852
Kek
Well that's it. Same with the Jeeps in question. It's simply a Provent and a tune. Hell, you don't have to physically remove the EGR, the tune simply reverses its function and uses it as an overrun bleed back. Literally a plumb back BOV.
However, if we continue looking for a family chariot I think I'll just be focussing on NM and NP Pajeros with R51 Parhfinders as an outside chance.

I've used multiple as quarry and mining LVs. Not once has one of those YD25s suffered vague, poorly described failures such as a "shit head and timing chain".
The only gripe with them is they're gutless if the turbo's caught with its pants down.

Top cuck mate. The head is shit if overheated, like every alloy head. Timing chain was dodgy in very few of them in real life. Keep memeing though, you're doing a great job.

What about the Subaru Impreza/WRX? BMW X-drive sedans? Audi/VW AWD sedans? As I said not every 4wd car is a large SUV or truck

I once daily'd a 5 ton for a week, good times, but my wallet. Did like 500-600 miles that week. Highway commute was 65-70mi round trip. I absolutely did not allow myself to use my other vehicles. I went grocery shopping in the 5 ton, picked up my date in the 5 ton, drove the 5 ton to work, college, took my mom to dinner in the 5 ton. I made it as if it was my only car. So many fucking lols where had.

Also dat flex. I also blew out the sidewall in some rocky terrain. Hopefully i never have to mount a new tire bigger than those again in my life.

The HMMWV is just so shit though.

>>15385906
I'm not sure I'd daily it if I got one, my V10 fullsize pickup is bad enough on gas. I want to build an LMTV into a bitchin overlander

Handling and high center of gravity I'll give you, but my 4x4 Toyota legit weighs less than most new cars nowadays. Is smaller than most of them, too.

Holy shit you guys! I just found out that my workplace doesn't block 4chan anymore! Well, the SFW boards anyway. Farewell, productivity, I barely knew ye!

In other news: I *do* own a 4WD, I just don't do any offroading, because frankly, I don't have friends who are into that and the next place that even resembles fun terrain is too far away... [image unrelated, but I kinda wish it wasn't]
