leaving the autopilot on and not watching what it was doing

it couldn't have seen the trailer, but the human in the driver's seat could have seen it beforehand

People overestimating the capabilities of camera aided cruise control. There will be a time when you can let the computer drive and not pay attention to the road anymore, but 2016 is not it.
>>

unfortunately this is what happens when you get complacent. Hopefully this doesn't negatively impact the advancement of automated driving. Human error strikes again.

Autopilot is supposed to be a driver assist, not a full-blown self-driving vehicle. 2 of my family members own Teslas and both have tried showing off their Autopilot feature by doing retarded shit like post on facebook while driving.

Self-driving cars have their limits, and a driver should be obligated to take control of the wheel at a moment's notice. Why are people so fucking retarded?

Smart roads when??

If roads could network with vehicles via a standard API we could have all sorts of behavior programmed into automatic navigation, without having to develop an AI with better-than-human vision.
>>
>>15359632
>smart roads
hundreds of billions of dollars

it's literally easier to go the self driving car route because people buy them individually instead of relying on a large government effort, and better than human vision AI is happening pretty soon anyway, this shit is advancing hella quick
>>
>>15359347
Obviously there was a flaw in the system, but Tesla has made it very clear that the driver must be ready to take over at all times.
>>
>sensors that are cheap enough for mass deployment and not butt fucking ugly like all the lidar shit google puts on their self driving cars are not perfect when not driven on perfect flat roads within 15 miles of google's campus that have been extensively mapped, or buttfuck nowhere single lane roads in flyover states

Local sensors will remain there for the foreseeable future, otherwise you'd end up with shit like ADS-B.

Even if you close off the signal from the "public" dozens of engineers are going to leak it and anyone who knows it could become a terrorist who just made a radio that drives cars off the fucking road if they rely off remote signals for positioning/driving info primarily.

>>
>>15359500
This guy gets it. I worked in IT in the valley for the better part of a decade. The engineers working on this are the kind of people that get defeated by door knobs. They are people who try to set up a static IP when the corp network hicups rather than toggle their connection. They survive on delusions of their own greatness. They are worthless at everything but writing code.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they are developing self driving cars because they themselves are too autistic to figure out how to drive. Everything is a hobby ego boosting project to them, they are completely unable to deliver finished products.

The fact that they released a tool like this to the general public in beta is a wonderful example of how completely retarded they are.

>>
Also Porsche and other VW brands, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo every single other manufacturer with a lvl 3 autonomous system is using the same exact Bosch sensors that are also in Tesla.

They all require you too hold your hands on the wheel apart for the most time, Tesla just disabled this safety feature and went:

>>15359749
There are some divided highway in rural areas that have cross streets. Its not uncommon but this truck driver clearly should not be trying to cross a highway that is at all populated. This is not Teslas fault. It is a little of the dudes fault for not paying attention that his car wasnt seeing the trailer, and mostly the fault of the arrogant truck driver who think the road revolves around him

Look up video's of Tesla's driving in Autopilot, they ask to hold your hands on the wheel once a minute or two minutes tops. And only for a brief second.

The same Bosch system in other cars requires you to hold your hands on the wheel more then 30% of the time.

I see people asking
>Not to mention what the hell does one do when the computer sensors break down?
What does a normal car do when the human driver's sensors break down? Or the human driver has a stroke or a heart attack? Or the human driver stops paying attention?

But I'm not going to take the words of actual Luddites who still praise stick shift seriously though.
Sadly, this man's death will serve as beta testing for future development. The shitbox heaps that encase you and your bad driving, that cause millions of deaths every year, will soon be irrelevant. Programmers will get better and drivers will be phased out. Everyone covers this story to a fanatical extent, but no one talks about the drunk drivers and Fast and Furious wannabe racers that take so many more lives.
The codes we write will get rid of your "hobby" and make the streets safer again.

Actually I think you are dead nuts wrong. "inherent _______" is the future. Using computers to engineer things that do not have problems. Aka front loaded. All the sophistication goes on at the factory.

Correcting issues with software is going to be confined to special applications. There is no reason to have all the sophistication in the end product. Coders like yourself have a very difficult time ever doing things right the 1st through 200th time. Because you are so terrible at your jobs, automation will always require supervision and intervention.

It's not even comparable, because Melee has not really received any official updates since release, while manual transmissions continue to get better every year.

because they don't have an asshole leading them around, parading them as the way of the future, when there are clearly problems that should have been addressed before the car was available to the public. autonomous cars will be a common thing and people will get tickets for not being attentive at the wheel. There will still be fatal crashes with autonomous cars but people will accept the risk as worth while.

Worthless appeal to emotion. I'll ignore the utter nonsense where you devolved the argument into video game allegories. We're talking about cars and the improvement of technology. If your excuse of a hobby is to drive fast in a steal cage while putting everyone's lives at risk, then it's time to grow up. The future will be a world of driverless transportation that is safer than idiotic road racing spergs speeding through traffic, running over innocent pedestrians. And don't talk about fun when you don't even let /n/ enjoy their bicycle rides in peace.

I'll go back to /g/ where we're working to end driver input. Computers will lead the way. And to add on to my previous post, self-driving cars will be safe when all cars and most roads have government-mandated position and orientation identifiers in them. A self-driving car going off digitized models of the traffic conditions is a trivial thing to accomplish. A self-driving car using entirely visual information will always have wrinkles to be ironed out. That's why CAPTCHA's are visual images: humans are just better at interpreting visual data than even the most sophisticated algorithm.

Again, it's only a matter of time before your manual shitboxes will be collectively dumped in a junkyard where they won't be used to take innocent lives on the road. Maybe you can use the spare time to help progress technology instead of holding it back with appeals to emotion for an activity that's sole purpose is to transport, not endanger others with reckless stupidity.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There is nothing fun sitting in a chair doing nothing but fiddling with a phallic shaped object (which I'm sure you all love) while being stuck in gridlock traffic, as you're enclosed in a steel cage. In a driverless car, I could read, watch a movie, or put my time to programming and bettering myself instead of engaging in an archaic form of transportation. The future is a bright one, where road rage, drunks, and ghetto racers won't be ruining it for the rest of the sane members of society. Gasoline powered cars will be dead in 300 years.

Diesel vehicles will be dead in 300 years.

Self driving cars will be dead in 300 years.

All of the Earth's natural resources will be gone and spent. Either put into a battery for someone's phone, laptop, or massive laptopphone with wheels that carts them around. All of the hydrocarbons will be contaminating the air after being drawn from the earth and burned. Earth will become uninhabitable just like almost every other planet in existence. You think you're a fucking genius, and the results of your genius won't likely affect you in your lifetime, or mine, but you're just as big of a problem as someone speeding around in a shitbox. You're the type of person responsible for creating an uninhabitable Earth.

You've killed us all with your progressive techno bullshit. You're taking evolution out of the picture. Now, every retard can survive a full life and continue to water down the gene pool while the planet's population steadily rises. The pollution problem does the same, no matter how much "green" or "eco friendly" garbage is pushed. We're always consuming , as long as we exist. Eventually, there won't be enough food to go around. There will be riots, people will die, maybe in a Hitler-esque government genocide. There will be more nuclear explosions. There will be massive wars fought over water and bread.

No ship is unsinkable, and as far as I'm concerned Earth is the Titanic. Put the engines in full reverse, Captain Fuckstick, because we all trust that you know what's good for us.

Human beings are filled with determination and competition, it is (combined with an amazing anatomy) what sets us apart from animals and insects whose goals are to reproduce and self-preserve, not advance in their careers or connect with their children on a deeper level.

Humanity hasn't made it this far by taking the most optimal path. Millennium of struggle, hard work, desperation, passion, fervor, and trial & error is what it has taken to advance as a species. Computers will always be beneath humanity because they lack humanity.

Do you know what was referred to as a computer in the 1800s?
A human being.
It was a job that no longer exists because we now offload our mathematical processing to machines.

Humans are computers. We deal with much more abstract and complex equations than our silicon children, but we are computers and machines all the same. Your body is a collection of levers, loads and fulcrums that allow your limbs to move, connected to an electrical network of neurons that relay direction from a central processor to the muscle fibers that also allow your lungs to inhale and your heart to beat.

Those are the same fucking thing, you idiot. Humans caring so deeply for their children is WHY WE ARE STILL HERE, and career advancement is directly tied to social advancement, self-preservation and self-improvement. They are the same impulses, simply filtered through the human cognitive lens.

What sets us apart from the other creatures on this planet is our ability to adapt and improve upon what nature has given us, and what we have created for ourselves.

You can do all that in a bus right now. Problem solved. And all the road blights you refer to don't ruin things for the rest of us, just their low percentage count victims.

No, I eat my breakfast at a table, so I can enjoy it.
Talking with my friends while driving and playing the alphabet game is fun.
I prefer to take my naps in an actual, comfortable bed.

Omg this so fucking much

Just look at these cock sucking piece of shits in this thread. They sound exactly like any of your nerd IT hipster friend in real life

>ha! Future not your choice!
>anon. You don't decide future
>anon. Accept the fact tesla changes everything
>whether you like or not, autopilot will be enforced by 2020
>electric cars so much better. Petrol car has no advantage

These people just sound so fuckihg ego and ignorant. They want to flip over the world but in fact they don't realize how the situation is in real life. Exactly like how faggots praise Steve jobs as some god who takes over the control of this planet
>>
>>15359963
Are you fucking stupid? Billions of people are driving. Only few hundreds autopilot on road
In comparasion, autopilot has much larger chance of crash

None of those things has anything to do with a smartphone you contrarian teenager.

>>15363908
It's what it always comes down to, you self-driving-car nuts aren't really going to do anything sociable or productive during your commute, it's all about wanting to be a lazy fuck and tapping away at the most recent fad game and checking your facebook/instagram/twitter hundreds of times per day.
>>
>>15360387
With this many people sucking Tesla cock, NO
Stupid people would still praise tesla even if their parents died in a crash. Then technology would never evolve because OMG ANON ITS PERFECT ITS JUST YOUR FAULT
>>
>>15359963
>millions of drivers
>93 deaths
>a few "autopilot" users
>one death
My math says that your argument is worse for autopilot than it is for regular drivers.
>>
>>15363913
I'm not a self driving car nut. I like driving. But if I'm going on a three hour road trip down an interstate then I'm sure as hell going to let my car drive itself because how could I possibly enjoy that? I could read a book, watch a movie, get work done, whatever. It's a much better use of that time.
Self driving cars aren't going to be viable for probably a decade or more but I really don't see what the problem is.

Oh and I bet you're also a Marxist and you think you're cool in college

Company Beta tests safety critical systems on public roads. I can't find any reference to 13849 compliance for the system so presumably it's not sold with the autopilot and instead it's rolled out as on OTA update to avoid having to actually prove the system is safe.

This. I find it unconscionable.

If you think that, you're a simpleton.
>>
>>15363931
Are you gonna ban people who don't want to do this?
Why is that always faggot tech guy want to take away freedom and let government regulations take control of everything?
What if I want to drive on road? What if I don't give a fuck about books and smartphone and don't have friends? Are you gonna ban me because I don't fit in your "future"?
>>
>>15363985
No you asshat. I don't think manual cars or self driving cars should be banned.
>>
>>15363958
There is nothing of value in saving a hobby (if you can call it that) where the enthusiasts use cars as an extension of themselves, to give themselves an identity embedded in brand choices, consumerism, materialism, and mindless adrenaline rush endeavors for the sake of teenage racer fantasies. You are not the car you drive. It's a tool, and if you only use it just to go fast while sitting in a chair surrounded by a steel cage, then you've all had it coming. Programmers, computer scientists, and computer engineers will kill human car driving. It's only a matter of when.
You want to have fun going fast in circles? Take it to the track where it belongs and away from municipal roads. And I don't think you are looking at the advantages. If you get drunk at the club, your driverless car will escort you safely back home. Instead of being trapped in gridlock traffic, you can use the spare time to read, watch a movie, learn a programming language, lift a dumbbell, and actually better yourself instead of fiddling with a dick shaped object and metal levers as you gain weight wasting time in your life. And if you still want to drive, I'm pretty sure local tracks will profit off of this. You'll have a place where you can speed to your heart's content as you're no longer bound by speed limits and traffic laws.
>>
>>15359347
America should just stop trying to force the Tesla meme and let Detroit rest for good. Trying to compete with European, Japanese and Korean cars at all cost is literally killing people.
>>
>>15364138
I don't think human driving will be killed, just far more restricted the way that other forms of transport are. For example trains are restricted to the tracks they run on, but even beyond that they use a system where you cannot "run a red light", if you go through a red signal the train just stops by itself. Shit like that.

I can't imagine a world with absolutely zero driver control over vehicles. The roads in the US for one thing are too fucked up for this to work, we're really going to have a road system not full of random cracks, potholes, missing paint etc. and we're going to have to develop a road system that is stable and long lasting if we want a completely automated, driver less car system.

I'm not against increasingly automated driving features like collision avoidance/automatic braking, adaptive cruise control and blind spot warnings. But this is all a lot of fucking work just to have a world with millions of cars that drive themselves. If people don't want to drive drive - or cannot drive because of intoxication, lack of license etc. - we've had another option since forever: have them get on a train or a bus, and walk the rest of it. People who can't drive or don't want to drive don't need personalized 3,0000+ pound vehicles for themselves. That means less traffic on the road, and frees up the roadways to people who honestly, truly "need" a car.
>>
>>15364257
>we've had another option since forever: have them get on a train or a bus
Taxi tho. That said, a fleet of on-demand driverless taxis would be pretty awesome.
>>
>>15364328
>taxi tho
Even then, you're still letting somebody else drive. You're carpooling, which means one less car on the road. Where I live, almost everyone has their own car. This is mainly because there's no reliable mass transit that runs on a good, useful schedule and moves between the many spread out key areas. And people here will bitch and whine about traffic, about having to drive, about having to insure and maintain their car. I say, if they hate it so much, just vote in a mass transit initiative. When you're sitting in the seat of a vehicle that isn't yours, driven by somebody that isn't you, you're free.

Free of obligation to operate it or take over in case the fancy self-driving beta stage program shits itself. Free of having to constantly fuel it up with either electricity or gas, free of maintenance, free of insurance costs. Those headaches aren't going to go away just because the car drives itself, so would you really put up with that just so you don't have to pay attention to the road, when there's a much easier and currently existing way to do just that?

and before anyone says it, no, I'm not saying we should ban driving/cars period. I'm saying, let's not have all these people who hate driving being forced to drive because they have no other option. Let's not now make them sit in a vehicle that kind of drives itself but not really because it's on a glorified cruise control mode. Let's not have 3,000 lb, $35,000 appliances for a bunch of people who don't want or need them.
>>
>>15364138
There's more to having fun with cars than racing them and going fast. You'd probably appreciate the nuanced feel of a nicely tuned, fun to drive car on the road if you had driven something other than your 2004 FWD Corolla.

Well yes, you said train or bus, but these are bound to tracks or predefined routes, whereas taxis do exactly what autonomous cars will be doing. They're hella expensive because the driver and his family need to eat. So, autonomous cars will be the perfect taxis of the future. And I guess there will be people buying their own personal taxis for whatever reason I can't see yet.

>3,000 lb, $35,000 appliances
The Tesla Model X is full fucking 5,381 lbs. You kinda have to dig around more than for other cars to find out because it's so embarrassingly pigfat, the weight isn't even on their wikipedia page.

>Personal taxis
Yeah I'll concede that. And I'll admit we can't totally get rid of cars, I won't say there isn't a niche for self driving cars. I just think it's worthwhile to explore alternatives, like I said less cars on the road is better and safer for those who do need a car, be it a self driving taxi or commercial pickup.

>The Tesla Model X is full fucking 5,381 lbs.
Yeah I lowballed it with 3,000 lbs. I did see a model X on the road yesterday for the first time and it was pretty huge. The driver kept flashing his high beams at people too, I have no idea why.

If you google it specifically, you'll obviously find it, but for most cars you can find it without even looking for it. The average consumer won't even know what his supposedly environmentally friendly car weighs and how much energy it is wasting just to move its own weight.

Tesla autopilot is being investigated after Model S driver dies in crash

U.S. auto-safety regulators are investigating Tesla Motors Inc.’s autopilot feature after a motorist using the system died in Florida, ratcheting up scrutiny on the electric vehicle maker and on the auto industry’s race to develop driverless cars.
