I let my friend drive my 01 BMW M Roadster while I was drunk, and he shifted it from 5th to 2nd at 80mph. The mechanic just told me the valves slammed into the pistons, and the engine is destroyed.

Sue him for the cost of a new engine, or work out with him a monthly payment plan that will allow you to complete the necessary headwork and order new parts inc. fitting over a number of months. Use the first paycheck to buy an absolute beater though and just deal with that in the meantime.

As a side note, never expect another person to care about your posessions as much as you do. I've had friends destroy numerous things of mine just by being clumsy.

nope, its probably just the valves. worst case you might have to mill the head and clean up the combustion chambers, then dremel smooth 1-2 of the smacked pistons if theres visible damage.

you're not the first one to moneyshift its very rare to crack a piston from one. worst that happens is you get a nasty indent in the piston face

And this, parents, is why you don't give your son or daughter an expensive luxury car, even if you can afford one for them.

Because sooner or later they get out on their own and then they're making money - but not really enough to maintain or support what you gave them. And then something breaks, and they can't afford to fix it. And then they have to get a normal mortal car like all the rest of the plebs. Either that or they go whine to you about how they broke their car can you please pay for it to be fixed.

If you like your kids at all, give them something mechanically sound, but something that's a step below whatever they'll be able to afford on their own. It should have ripped seats, maybe a weird smell, maybe the trunk leaks, just as long as it's reliable. And it should be dog slow.

Then when they get out on their own, that barely affordable Hyundai to them looks like an upgrade, instead of a fall from grace.

If I hated my son though, I'd get him the most expensive foreign import car I could, and then tell him he's on his own, sink or swim...

Your fault.
>>
>>15352271
>I let my friend drive my 01 BMW M Roadster and he shifted it from 5th to 2nd at 80mph.

Well, since you gave him permission to drive the car, you cannot force him to pay for it unless you had filed charges it was stolen. If the rest of the car is immaculate, then it is possibly time for an engine swap.

I remember letting someone else drive my new car. He wanted to see what it was like. He immediately drove it with the tach in the red zone. I had to shout multiple times before he relented. My blood pressure went so high that I was feeling sort of "faint" like on the edge of fainting unconscious.
>>
>>15354776
>Dude your friend money shifted an S54? A new engine is over 10k. Time for your friend to get a job and start making payments or for you to take him to small claims.

If it is over 2500 dollars, then it doesn't fit in small claims court. And in a real court, the judge will throw out your case due to lack of merit. That is, you have no contract or agreement drawn up where your friend must pay if you authorize him to drive your vehicle. If he agrees in court to pay it then fine.
>>
>>15352280
That's not what this is about. Interference engines die when the timing belt fails. This was a failure caused by over-revving, which can happen to any engine type.
>>
>>15354348
turbos are more efficient at compressing air than an engine in the first place, so why not
>>
>>15352593
Most cars top out at 62mph (100km/hr) in second gear in order to get the best 0-60 (0-100) time possible. Sometimes manufacturers improve a small-engined car by making second gear top out at 55mph, and then the magazines get upset because the extra shift hurts its 0-60 time.

It would be a gilipollez for a manual transmission car to have a 2nd->3rd shift point at 80 mph (or 80 km/hr).

How're those valves treating you, pistoncucks?
>>

Insurance doesnt cover mechanical failures dumbass

it's only a few grand tops for a replacement engine. seems like a car worth saving.

i'd say your friend owes you, that's a rare car to trash. only honorable thing to do.
>>
>>15359666
yes but it's harder than it sounds. you'll feel resistance in the shifter before it slots home so if your quick you can clutch out of it before bad stuff happens.

I've saved myself on the highway a couple times =,

Look up a 5.3 vortec swap. you can get a 5.3 from a junkyard and i can almost promise you someone has done a swap on it into a car like yours

Parts+Labor on a decent longblock is going to be at least 7500 tho. Sweet that they aren't as expensive as I thought.

Where you at OP??? I've got cash mane
>>
>>15360929
You probably took it to 4-5000rpm. High, but it's fine to take the engine there when you're in a hurry.
>>
>>15352271
You should get better friends or drink less. Or, drink better and have less friends.

Buy a $800 corolla dumbass and learn how to drive drunk.

>turbos are better at compressing air than an engine that does not compress air

I mean, come on, i do not hate turbos and i kinda like them, but the truth is that between a small engine that has a turbo simulating higher displacement and an engine of that same displacement there is a big difference in favour of the big engine.
>>
>>15352271
This wouldn't have happened in a lexus op.
Time to sell that junk and make a good decision in your life for once.>>15360437

Hi OP, have pic related, skipped gears a few times and it's never had this problem. Although it isn't the Msport version I wonder what the fuck your 'friend' was actually doing.

Yeah, because NOBODY EVER replaced a valve seat or a valve.

Don't listen to me, I'm just rebuilding this 400hp-capable Mazda shittoboxu head. Replaced the exhaust valves for oversized ones, ported both sides, new stem seals, fixed a couple of seats (see those circles around the valves, dumbass?) and gave it a slight polish to fix a bit of warp.

Fucking summerfags, I swear...
>>
>>15352289
if he's lucky but if valve hug the piston he could have to replace the cylender block too
so cylinder+ head +valve + piston
he will have to drop some massive cash

probably experiencing low compression

is it hard starting?
>>
>>15364507
We are talking about the valve contacting the piston due to valve float. The seat will be the least of problems. It will usually take out the valve guide and that isn't replaceable.
>>
>>15364974
That's if the valve drops in

I don't let anyone drive either of my cars just because if they wreck one I'm out the money + insurance probably won't cover it if they hurt someone and I'm not sure who gets stuck with that.

And then they're gonna owe me the money, and then they're not gonna have it, and then I'm gonna have to ride them about it forever, and then we're not gonna be friends anymore, and then I'm gonna be mad and down a car and some money and a friend.

you could easily sell it to bimmerbreaker in bimmerforums for a couple grand

check the z3 subforum

Or, you could keep it and swap an S54 into it.
