>Obtaining a CDL: How do?
Community College or a dedicating truck driving school. Do your research and don't get sucked into a "school" that's actually just a meat grinder for a shit company. Do not pay over $5000 for a course that lasts several months.
>How can I into avoidings shit companies?
Here are some decent/good companies:
http://pastebin.com/Sv0cyWyH
If you don't see the company you're looking at included on this list, lurk moar.

>I could totally go to school but I'd rather be a trucker.
If you think you'll love the lifestyle, maybe. You'd be better off getting a """""real""""" job. You can fall back on trucking at any time, but it is essentially a path of decent money for those that fail at everything else.
You can have good business sense and work ethic and make it big as an owner operator, but you would do even better at any other job.

Babby's first trucking job. Local delivery, M-F job. Only part I'm nervous about is making routes since it seems like every day is always slightly different. Does Google maps or Waze or some other GPS allow you to input all your stops and set up a route for you?
>>
>>15315575
My rand mcnally gps allows for multiple stops. Also, if youre worried about it buy a map.
>>
>>15315575
I'm sure you can route multiple stops, but I just want to warn you to be careful using Google Maps and similar GPS apps. It will route you through lots of roads you don't necessarily want to take a truck down. If I need to GPS something, I just look at it on a map and get there via main roads.

>>15315608
Yeah I know regular apps will set you through residential areas and stuff, I think I will get a hang of the locations soon to know their general location and to avoid getting off the highway early to go through neighborhoods.

>>15315598
That looks pretty cool, though I imagine it needs its own data plan? Problem is the guy I'm replacing has been doing it for 22 years so the company has no GPS units or maps, I'd have to get my own.
>>
>>15315702
>data plan

For a dash mounted gps? No. Its plug-n-play. Whichever one you get make sure it comes with lifetime map upgrades. It might cost a little extra but its well worth it.

>Only trucks I consistently pass are CRST
Isn't CRT like 68-70? They always pass me, and I'm governed at 65.
>>
>>15315768
They might be that fast. He might be thinking of cr england. I think theyre governed somewhere on the low/mid 60's.
>>
>>15315866
Confirmed. Skyline governs their trucks at 65, always passed CR England, rarely passed CRST trucks.

Side story
>Stopped last week for bite to eat
>Chatting with another driver, turns out he lives down the highway from me, few towns away
>Had previously ran Lease/Op + Training for CRST
>CRST ran it like teams, newbie basically learned nothing aside from doing it all himself
>Dude liked it that way because he got 75% of every load's payout
>Then one day a trainee fell asleep at the wheel and ramped off a ditch over a fence into a field
>Truck totaled
>CRST refuses to pay for anything, even though it was their own trainee that did all this
Dude said he's already got them in court, lawyer tells him it's open-and-shut since they covered trainee on workman's comp. Apparently they tried to claim they weren't responsible because the trainee wasn't yet an employee or some bullshit.

Thanks I'll have to look into one. Think the 730 is good enough? The TND 70 and 80 are kinda tempting because they can double as a dash cam which my truck does not have.
>>
>>15316019
I've heard that from other crst drivers too. The maintenance is just as bad they won't authorize repairs unless you take em to court or pay out of pocket. And this is on company rigs. Owner ops get a special kind of dicking.
>what the truck we sold you was a lemon? Well that load is late now. We're gonna charge you 500 a day till it gets there.what's that? You can't afford to replace everything in the truck we sold you?suck to be you.
>>
>>15316074
The Garmin Dezl units also support dash cams. I'm sure the Rand McNally TND line works fine, but I had several drivers advise me to avoid them and get a dezl. They all claimed the newer TND devices blow.
>>15316019
Probably just trying to talk nonsense in hopes that he'd drop it and not go to court, but that didn't work.

I've been known to take faulty equipment to weigh stations. Dot really really likes me when I do that. The company has gotten the Fix-It ticket every single time. It typically gets fixed in just a couple of days.
>>

I'll look into these, thanks

>>15316184
Nice setup, hopefully the truck has a cigarette lighter to power it, I've been looking and can't find one lol.

The dash cam is actually plugged in to my cb power supply via a cigarette lighter style extension cord found at any truck stop. My truck itself has 6 plugs.

>>
>>15316405
I was on 15. But not in cali today.
>>
BTW Pride (not prime) is owned by one of the England family.
Also BTW Knight, England and Swift are all Utah based, and there's significant backroom dealing and even marriages between the executive families.
Also also BTW Dick Simon was another Utah-based blight on the industry, but the company went under after their horrific mistreatment of employees got them in shit too deep to stay afloat.
However, the members of the board (Dick's kids) proceeded to strip the company of assets sold at ridiculous discounts to new corporations under their own names and continued business as usual under lower profiles.
Kelle's transport service is the most successful of these spinoffs.

>But the more axles, the more brakes.

That was the argument CTP and the other trucking lobbyists used, but they didn't bring any hard data to congress to back it up. No studies, no track tests. Lobbying fail.

The safety argument went beyond stopping distances anyway. people were asking questions about cornering stability and the effect of the extra weight in a truck/car crash.

>How else would overweight permits ever be possible?
The idea behind permitting is that you're doing something special and unusual that doesn't happen every day. It's OK for that to be less safe than a business-as-usual load.

On average how many days a week do you guys actually sleep at truck stops? If you don't stop at a truck stop every night, do you stop during the day to have a shower? I'm finding I maybe end up at a truck stop once a week, and it doesn't even necessarily have a shower... I also find while I can stop for up to 2 hours each day and still be able to drive afterwards for the missed time I'm always rushed into my unload/pick up.
tl;dr do you guys actually get a shower in everyday? because i haven't showered since Monday and I hate it...

I have a ton of plastic v-boards, got the telescoping stick that they sell, works great, throw the straps, lift the board. Move straps with the lifter
I haul that stuff from Mansfield all the time, company makes me tarp, pays for it, they used to not pay, told me tarp on my own time, nope, plus the crappy plastic wrap always ends up ripping, shredded, gone halfway to the receiver, had a few refusals, now I get to tarp, take a picture of the load and of the tarp job and once I get to the consignee, send the pics to the shipper, receiver and my dispatch, my company even sends my photo to pick up and drop off locations so they know who is coming, just a small outfit, only 25 trucks, so customer service is a major priority, I even have to wear a uniform, kept presentable, I have to ETA everyone along the way, some companies care, some give zero shits
>>
>>15322625
I agree with everything you said, but my company will not pay me to tarp and they will not buy real edge protectors, so that's the way I have to do it.

Unfortunately, most of these go directly to job sites and they don't give a fuck by and large. Oh well. If Roehl wants the small fish contracts they can have them, I only get paid to do what they tell me to.

This guy replied for me >>15322625

I was going to say, there's nothing inherently incorrect or dangerous about the strapping job. I'm sure it held fine, and would have held fine with just the straight straps over top. I'm seeing a lot of damaged product, the worst of which are the stacks at the back, damaged on several corners. What were you hauling?

Mostly I have an issue with the angled straps. They become longer when they're angled, and if they slip at all then the straps become very loose very quickly. Never seen anyone do a butt strap on the bottom of the back stacks either. I see that one is held in place by the X straps, which is good, but not sure if it was necessary.

Not trying to be a dick. Whatever gets you paid.

What's the difference in dedicated and regional? Which gets more home time?

I'm 22 thinking of becoming a trucker. My plan is to OTR 24/7 until I save $100K or turn 30, whichever comes first. Then try to get a dedicated or regional gig, buy a house, and spend weekends fishing.
>>
>>15322862
they both get the same hometime.
dedicated ensures you are going to the same place over and over so itll probably be better planned out. otr is a crapshoot but variety

any canadians here?

want to compare my salary: i drive a DZ truck, work 40-45 hours a week, i do like 20 stops a day. im getting like 40k a year with good benefits and 4 weeks paid vacation.

I can't tell if I'm doing alright or if I'm underpaid and I can't decide if its worth it to make more money if I have to work 70 hours a week for it.
>>
>>15323273
I have been caught out before. You think you're in the middle of fucking nowhere, so you have an outdoor shower and some bloody farmer comes driving out of the bush from nowhere.

Sounds like you're doing pretty not bad. I assume you're driving semi and not a straight truck, eh? I'd say that's pretty average for a tractor trailer driver back home doing drive and drop sorta shit, but those guys work way more hours than 40-45 a week. Always possible to make more money locally if you get on with a larger company too.

Dedicated drives for a single account. For example, you will be picking up from the same Target distribution center and delivering to the same stores over and over again. Regional is more like OTR, but within a specified region. It could be never leaving the state or it could be your home state plus surrounding. For example, I drive regional for a company out of Richmond, VA. I drive Virginia all the way down to Florida sometimes. I work Tues-Sat, off every Sunday and Monday 100%. I may be delivering a trailer load of recycled paper or a refrigerated load of frozen chicken. It's not the same shit over and over again. I tried dedicated for Target out of Stuarts Draft, VA for a few months and I hated it.

I like that you plan on staying out 24/7. As an OTR trucker, that's pretty much the lifestyle if you wanna get paid. I see all these new truckers complaining they ain't get no "$1K a week" like they were promised when they are going home every weekend. You gotta stay out at least 2 months at a time in my opinion to maximize your paycheck. I started when I was 24 and the only home time I took for my first 3 years besides Christmas and 4th of July was whenever I needed to visit a doctor or DMV.

>>15323262
I know more than a handful of truckers that have nice houses paid off for, driving Mustangs/F150s, brand new boats/RVs, etc.

If you can't save $100K as a trucker, then you are really fucking retarded. Being 21 you shouldn't have any bills but a cell phone and maybe Netflix, Spotify, etc.

>yes. Fuck this product.

>>15322852
I don't think youre being a dick. I think it looks silly which is why I used it in the OP.

This is polystyrene foam insulation, which as I said earlier goes mostly straight to job sites. There they stuff the bulk of the panels into the walls, and for the most part they understand that a few of them will have damage and they use those pieces in corners and near the top where they use partial width panels anyway.

Honestly, seriously I don't really want to do it, but it has to stay on the trailer, even after I've dropped it and johnny-my-first-load takes it and forgets that he has mirrors.

BCfag here. Drive only within the province, but all over it. Usually out for 2-5 days at a time depending on how much work there is, then I do local in Vancouver when I get back. Hourly, on track for $45k this year, made around $40k last year. Benefits and all that too, 2 weeks vacation.

The kicker? It's a 5-ton. Are you driving a semi? If you are, I would say it's slightly underpaid. Either that or I'm overpaid, or just getting a lot of overtime. Getting ready to license up and drive a real truck though, these threads are helping a lot.

>>15326399
Because Mazda consumerised the look of it for broader appeal in an attempt to be more profitable and at the same time tried to rein in the Wankel in order to appease Uncle Sam and Commiefornia's environmental regulations demands. The RX-8 is all around more tame and less fun than the RX-7, but it's still at least more fun than a typical economy car. Just toss on some wheels and subtle bolt-ons to grab attention.
>>
>>15326285
Then get an FB RX7, the 12a doesn't produce much power but it's simple and the cars are cheap as shit. If you need more power the FC RX7 has the 13b (also in FB GSL-SE trim) some which have factory turbo.

Well now I know not to go here, it really is a bad and dangerous place. Caught me off guard, I'd expect shit like this around Atlanta or Baltimore, not on the rural looking outskirts of weak ass nice Dallas.

Ya dun goofed up.
There's a loves with a tire shop just a few miles south on the 45, 95% nigger-free.

I drive intrastate
Got a bolt like that last month, on a brand new tire, partly in the sidewall
Happened on the highway, rural area, drive tire was flat after about a mile
Huge cost to come out and get it fixed, needed a brand new tire, had to wait for that too
Receiver got mad at the delay and refused the delivery, lost a pickup for the trip back
Manager writes me up for "not scanning the road for debris", avoidable flat tire, my fault for the lost buisness
Got a two week suspension

Using the time to find another job

Not scanning the roadway for bolts at 330 am travelling at 75 mph, I missed that class during training
>>
>>15329927
>not scanning the roadway for bolts
>at 75mph

How the fuck is anyone going to see something like a bolt in the fucking highway and swerve to miss it at that speed. I would've told them to fuck right off. I'd rather destroy a brand new tire than destroy a truck or a 4 wheeler trying to miss a bolt in the road. What the fuck.

Don't forget the Meth-heads, not even close to passing tranny whore, the asshole city county and state police
And all the fucking gravel, only city I have been thru that I routinely get my windshield cracked in
Absolutely hate doing a drop there, since the drywall business went in the toilet, it's either wait until you die or dead-head for no pay out of the state for a pick up
Beautiful state, just a ton of fucked up low-life's
Without Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs that whole state would dry up and blow away
Can't decide which truck stop is worse, the packed and stacked, inconvenient TA or the Flying J with the single narrow right hand turn, watching all the trailers nearly tip over, they have a new loves at the top of the hill into town, nice big dirt yard and when the afternoon wind blows thought the cab was going to tip over
I do my best to take my layovers at one of the Casinos

Do all trucks worldwide share the same dimensions and kingpin design or do they need to be altered if moved to another continent?
>>
>>15336479
That's actually a good question. I don't have an answer to that one.
>>
>>15336479
I've noticed that on American cars the kingpin is rather far forward on the trailer to increase the wheelbase, creating a rather gaping hole of several feet between tractor and trailer so the thing can still turn without crashing into itself. In Europe meanwhile the kingpin is as far from the front of the trailer as it is from the sides to close the gap between tractor and trailer and decrease drag. Not that you'd import an American trailer to Europe anyway, they're far too long for our length laws, and I think European trailers work just fine with American tractors.
>>
>>15336729
*American trucks, not cars.
>>
>>15336729
European trailers are snugged up against the tractor for aerodynamics and to maximise load area.
They also carry the majority of the weight on the trailer axles rather than the tractor axles, so the trailer axles are pretty far forwards with an aero box either side of them.

I think you could hook either trailer to either truck, but a euro-truck would have trouble hauling an american trailer at speed due to stability, and a US truck would have grip issues with a euro trailer, and probably take exception to the weight.
Note how, in the Russia pictures you see American and eurotrucks hauling both kinds of trailers. The russians don't give a fuck.
>>
>>15336927
A euro truck hauling an American trailer would mostly have a far worse turning radius and have to be more careful about its axle weight since most of them only have one drive axle. I would expect the longer wheelbase to be more stable actually.
>>
>>15336952
I guess it would be stabler at speed, but wouldn't the axle loads get all shitty under braking? Like not enough weight on the trailer tandem and too much on the tractor's drive axle?
Coupled with the short wheelbase of EU tractors, wouldn't that make the whole thing unstable?
>>
>>15336729
Thanks for the explanation. I've always wondered how the Euro trailers worked with the American trucks.
>>
>>15337479
Now, on to Japanese trucks. Can our resident Jap truckers speak up?

starting trucking school soon

one of my coworkers at my current job who also works as a dispatcher or whatever for a trucking company was telling me he could get my a job as a cross country car hauler. 3000 for a round trip load, 4000 as duo.. said if I was an owner operator and worked hard during the summer months, I can be making upwards of 16k a month being an owner operator.

does this sound feasible? does it sound like a good job?
