E30 or E36? Both excellent condition, both excellent price.

id say e30 as they will increase in value sooner and there are less good condition examples left

most people will say e30 but i think the e36 is more livable without sacrificing too much fun

have you test driven an example of both?

This. E30 has dat look and feel but the e36 is just modern enough to be livable like that. Also, e36's are like legos if you're gonna mod it.

Although, if the e36 you're looking at is a 4cyl, don't and get the e30 regardless of it's engine.

welded a small patch for my e30 floor. it's fucking terrible chicken shit welds and I had holes. Cleaned it up with wire wheel, primered it, sprayed some rubber coating shit to seal it up under and on top. I guess it might be terrible but it's better than a rust hole.
>>
>>15260164
Were you using a mig welder with gas? If you spend some time learning to set it up correctly there's no reason the weld should have problems. Maybe you didn't clean the welding surface enough. You can always do another pass over it.

So, I'm thinking of buying some aftermarket headers for my Z3

trying to decide if i should buy ebay ones like everyone and spend a little money ceramic coating them and getting an exhaust shop to make them fit perfectly, or buy the bimmerbrakes V1's that are a little more expensive, but wont have any clearance issues

only question is, will there be fitment issues considering i've got an M54B22 (2.2i)? The headers are for the M54b25/b30 (2.5i/3.0i), they're both M54 engines so there shouldnt be any problems, right?

thanks

Now all you need is a shitty trip and a plushie of your previous car and you'll be a faggot just like me.
I'd say if it's a 6 cylinder and in decent condition you won't regret it. The only thing I regret about mine is 4 cylinders. Be prepared to spend more on the BMW than on the Punto though. Or are you not the Punto guy?

Are 5 series in general really that big? I've always thought my 7 series was about average and that the E34 for example is a bit cramped inside, yet people commented on my E34 how huge it was.

>>15261530
Keep an eye on the cooling system and you'll be golden, the M50 engine itself is easy to work on and hassle free, but the cooling is a weak spot due to the use of plastic everywhere and plastic becomes kinda brittle and weak after 20 years.
>>
>>15261530
I'm already jelly. I myself am considering an M50B20/M52B20 swap. Don't want a more powerful one cause I know I'd kill myself. But I can't afford a swap yet so maybe after I'm done with my job in Denmark.
>>
>>15261565
I'd still have to get it
still can't let go of the Punto for some reason I'm really attached to it.
>>
It just dawned upon me, the M70B50 engine has a compression ratio of 8.8:1, right?
Doesn't that mean I could boost the thing without fearing of it blowing up like a towelhead in a US embassy?

Not talking about mad "hektik flutter uleh" here, just some very light boost for fun.
>>
Is an e30 a terrible idea for a first car. I work at a place that isn't a car mechanics, but restores old parts and machines including engines and carbs, shit like that if it makes a difference.
>>
>>15261690
Yes and no. It's a great car to get experience on wrenching things, but it's also a terrible car because you'll be wrenching a lot.
Sure the M10 and M20 engines were pretty much indestructible, hell, the M10 was technically even used in Formula 1 after a ridiculous amount of boost.
Still, they're old cars, like almost ancient and shit is bound to fail left and right after over 20 years of seeing asphalt.
>>
>>15259602
I happen to have both! E36 is by far the better car, far more modern and feels better on the road. Both are 325 coupes with their respective era engines (M20 and M50TU). M20 sounds nicer and is way more register-happy, probably due to lighter flywheel. M50 feels a bit smoother, has a timing chain and is almost as undedable as the M30. M20 is aight but you can almost bet your ass the owner hasn't changed the timing belt in forever and it likes to break rocker arms after 150k miles+ if it's being driven hard (which these tend to be, because there is no power down low)

One thing i can say in the E30s favor is that it's way lighter, my 325 weighs in at almost 1.5 tonnes or around 3300 lbs topped up with driver, while the E30 weighs about 1200kgs or ~2700 lbs. Considering the price of a good E30 these days i'd strongly suggest getting a good E36 instead. Unless you have some sort of die-hard fascination with the E30 chassis

That is the plan, however im not convinced with an M3 bumper, they're expensive and everyone has one, I was planning a look similar to pic.
For wheels im planning to go with some style 32's from the 7 series get something like 17x9s

yeah, maybe chrome is a little out of place on hellrot.

Style 32's are beautiful on all BMW's, just make sure the offsets work right on your car as it's 4 cylinder (and i believe the rear offset is a little weird on those)

Considering this as a DD. 2007 335i M-Sport with 48k miles, asking price £10995. Good or bad idea?

The main contender is a 2012-13 GT86 which is slower and stands out more (-), but is newer, cheaper to run and stands out more (+). I'd prefer an E92 335i or even a 330i but they're like hens teeth around here.

Make sure it has full service history, has all the recalls done
I bought an 07 335 and its my biggest regret, maintenance is a bitch on them. on my 4th HPFP and my 3rd waterpump. second set of turbos (thankfully warranty covered) and a bunch of other shit.
Its hit or miss though, I think I just got a lemon, my buddy has an 08 335 and he hasnt had any of the problems except wastegate rattle (which is quite frankly unavoidable)
do your research on the N54

Thanks, just the type of response I wanted. It does have FSH but I've noticed a few bodywork issues, main one being the condensation in the headlights.

Do you drive hard? My commute is very short, but it's mainly A/B roads and I rarely see motorways, sometimes spirited driving but nothing over the top. I'm assuming that's going to wear out the turbos etc a lot quicker than normal commuting?

E36 is more practical

E30will increase in value more reliably, and will be forever be more of a classic. It's also probably a bit more fun to throw around, although depending on the engines the E36 may be faster, and more fun because of that.

LTW is not a company, it was an M3 limited run that had better aero and was lighter. The lip linked is kind of like a Rieger GT lip which is a lip made to resemble the LTW's corner splitters and tray.

I have an LTW splitter, the cool thing about it is that it is retractable. I had one on my old M3 too and it was barely damaged when I crashed it. This one broke because it is a replica that I got (and I'm still pissed at the material quality of the tray) because the Genuine one is backordered still, so if you want one that will last do not get a replica. Or the Rieger lip either, people always talk about those breaking easily.

Hopefully it comes off backorder though, I know some people who have had orders since last autumn. They need to get around to making more, the real thing is a damn sturdy part.

If you want the spoiler (which I plan to get as well), get it from Abraham's Motorsport, it is regarded as one of the best replicas. MAShaw is sturdy but less precise finish (well because they are more race oriented). And eBay ones are fibreglass and sag etc.

Z3 guy here

That car's got the M sport seats, which are kinda rare, also has a new soft top rear window, which is a bit of a hassle to replace, also has the rare-ish 3 piece style 42's and the on board computer screen that some facelift Z's don't have.

130k isnt much for a Z3 as there is little to go wrong besides the cooling system that applies to all BMW's with the M52/M54 engine.

That being said, something is fucked with my 750 again, the thing stopped blowing hot, only cold comes out from the vents.
Turn the dial to hot and it stops venting completely.
Surprisingly the windshield vents do blow hot and the door vents blow hot to the windows too.

hallo ja fellow nazi's

meine e90 318i smokes like mad cunt when its been idling and i press down the gas pedal

then i can just keep mashing and revving the engine but it wont smoke until i let it idle for a little bit, it'll also do it if i cruise at very low rpm in heavy traffic between 1000-1500, then if i accelerate it'll shoot out hectic smoke clouds.
I did notice that when i try to pull off the oil cap its really sucked down to the valve cover, like theres a huge vacuum in there. My honda's dont have this and neither does my opel. Could that have something to do with it?

Also:
i replaced the valve cover gasket because that was leaking on the exhaust which made it really stink so thats all good but now i still sometimes get that oil on exhaust smell, could it be the vacuum pump thats leaking oil somewhere? the smoking is more of a problem though than this

it's nice at those times

I keep my hardtop on all year except spring-early summer, It's going back on next month when it gets even hotter.
It makes it very exciting once i get to take it off. I would take it off more often if i had a hoist for it, as of the past 2 years i've only taken it off and put it on a DIY PVC stand i made with a guide online.

I prefer how the car looks with the hardtop, but i really like driving with the top down.

During the winter as much as i'd like to put the top down, it rains a fuckload here during that time period and my hardtop leaks less than my soft top, so i just leave it on.

What type of oil does a M20 engine from a 1987 E30 325i take?

Forums are saying everything from 5w-20 to 10w-40. I bought 10w-40 but I'm scared to put it into the engine. Also since the engine is running low on oil but the filter is relatively new, I can just pour more oil in right?

you only go up in oil if it's burning it or leaking it.
10w-40 will be fine, most high mileage oils are 10w-40 or 20w-50

if you live somewhere where it gets exceptionally cold you might want to go back down for winter.

>>15285619

I didn't say the car was too low to fit a jack under it, I said I can't fit under the car, and I don't have a jack or jack stands, friend.

Also I am currently in possession of """oil knowledge""" and have done many oil changes, but it's not my car. It's my uncle's and I'm borrowing it, and I'm really paranoid about doing anything to it.

So how in the fuck do you not know that mixing oils is fine?

I've never had to mix oil weights so I never had to deal with it. Common sense says there's nothing wrong with it but I'm paranoid like I said, ok? Now get off my back about it.

Welp, parts I ordered are going to take longer than expected to arrive. God damn why does everyone need gaskets from BMW right this instant?

>tfw no ancient 7s around with the M30 engine

How were they otherwise? Did they have the classic electrical gremlins of other 7s or were they equal to an E34 in reliability?

My little seven was fine otherwise, didn't really have any electrical problems.
Mechanical ones more so, 2 transmissions left me stranded, both due to the a pack problem.
Also ran the thing for two years with a worn cam and broken lifter, ticked like the wnd of the world but never gave a fuck, just kept running.
Swapped in a new head, lifters and cams and the thing was fucking golden.

I actually kinda miss the fucker, the thing had its own charms and it was budget luxury, hassle free german budget luxury.

Tales from the V12 land.
Something went SNAP today and now it rattles whenever I rev the engine. Never a dull day.
>>
>>15286439
>now it rattles whenever I rev the engine.
That must be hell.
Sure it's probably minor, but since it's not suppose to happen, it becomes deathly annoying.

Hope you find that problem and get it fixed.

Enjoy spending hundreds on that timing chain and guide job.

>>15286470
lel fuck no, that's probably the ugliest V12 engine bay of all time.
>>
>>15286453
I'm suspecting an exhaust flange rusting off or something minor like that because the engine still runs like a pro

>>15286470
Not yet, need to get it cleaned and maybe paint the intake manifolds in some sexy colors. Black and red with white BMW text maybe?

Ehhh I'm personally not crazy about them. They're pretty much E30 roadsters with E36/46 drivetrains. I kinda feel for that much you can get a mint E36 M3 or a ratty AP1 S2000.
>>
>>15286960
Bigger than the 30 or 36. Still prefer my 7 series.
>>
>>15286729

you can get an M roadster for a little more, anon

M54b30's are nice and torquey, but M roadsters are much better.

Hell no. That is Z4 3.0i range. Bump it up to 13-15k and you can get a Z4 3.0si, or a Z3 M Roadster.

Not even the most pristine, low mileage, sport package Z3 3.0i is is worth that much. Just get the Z3 M Roadster. You won't be able to afford an S54 as they cost almost as much as a Z4 M Roadster (20-22k).

I was going to get a Z3 3.0i but just said screw it and got a Z4M. Way happy. Z4 is such a better car than the Z3, but quite larger feeling. (pic not related)

Obviously the guy put a lot of care into the car, but the mileage is pretty high. Its been for sale a month, I'd offer $2700 (tho personally i wouldn't buy such a car). Nice sport seats and manual are a plus, no HID is a shame tho.
>>
>>15289821
Were HID optional or something in America? Every old BMW I see in my country has HIDs, I've never seen one without them before.
>>
>>15289918
BMW didn't really offer them standard in the early 2000's. We either have different meanings of "old BMW" or the cars you see have aftermarket kits which aren't legal in my nation and I doubt yours.
