Get your blog holes ready, because it's a blog post.

Bike school ride 5/8 happened today. Lots of fuckups, one old man in front of a hospital nearly made me listen to the wisdom of the asphalt from close up. Instructor was visibly (audibly) frustrated at every issue. I could barely make out the words - he still has no idea how the bluetooth comms in the helmets work, so every instruction he yelled was through 2 helmets into my ear. This was especially fun on the freeway, doing 90kmh and nearing a multiple-choice exit, not hearing where he wants to go, but clearly hearing he wants to go somewhere specifically. Also wind.

The bike was laid down recently he said, the brake on his end was not functional. The right mirror was broken as well. All in all not my finest hour.

Looks like my remaining 3 rides are going to be with this guy. Exam is on the 30th.

On the plus side, while waiting for him to gear up I did a the written portion of the test for practice. 55/55. Not giving up
>>
>>15098814

on this note; help me decide. In bike school I'm riding a SV650. I feel like it's way too wide for me, unless I'm pressing my legs together I get a crampy feeling in either the left or right hip. Is this something I'll slowly grow into, or should I consider a smaller bike?

Also please confirm/deny: CBR600F vs SV650F huge difference? If I "learn" on the 650 V-twin, will I still die on the I-4?

I have never ridden a beta 300 so hard for me to give an opinion on them, my 300 is about as powerful as a 450f mx bike and the delivery is fairly similar, if anything my 300 has more bottom end power than any 450 i have ever ridden, they are fairly tamable with the powervalve springs too (4 different power delivery setting basically)

I think the difference where people think 300's are way more powerful than 450's comes purely from the fact that they don't slow down when you let off the throttle, if anything you are probably going to be faster on your 250 than a 300 simply because you can actually use all the power, different story on open trails, its just nice to have that power there when you really need it.
>>

Anyone who rides old British motorcycles. I was briefly a Real Motorcyclist with my BSA Bantam as if it could not be done with liquorice tyres, Amal carbs (basically a hose stuck in the air intake to pour all your fuel down the drain) and bobweight ignition advance, I didn't do it.

I feel like i need a cup in my one piece. Is this normal? I find it much harder to grip the tank as well now or it could just be a feed back thing like when your wearing your winter gloves and the comtrols all feel a little different.pic related my one piece i got to wear once but now im out of town for a week while my new baiku is at home wondering what she did wrong
>>
>>15098842
If you're starting out it could be that you're unsure how to position yourself on top of the bike and end up gripping the tank with your legs. It could also be that as a beginner, you're tense. I've never ridden a SV650F itself but I've ridden 600cc i4s, a Z800 and some other crap and they all felt alrite. I think it has more to do with being a beginner, you'll be alrite anon.

I daily on a 250 and I actually feel uncomfortable on it on longer rides because my legs want to "open" on the seat and I have to keep them closed. It's kinda fatiguing.

As for the CBR600F, I own one of the old iterations and I would not recommend it for a first bike. First of, your insurance is going to be ludicrous. They're also very unwieldy at low speeds (turn radius is large), the steering is very twitchy for a beginner bike (wants to fall to the inside), the brakes are very strong (more than a gentle pull and you're locking up) and there's the you'll-drop-it-and-scratch-it factor. Their power delivery is mad in higher revolutions. It's not that you're retarded, it's that you'll make mistakes, and those bikes don't forgive much.

You still can do it if you want, but it's not something I'd recommend.

Cheers m8

Define freeway and which 250 you're after.

Can checking valve clearance / syncing carbs & adjusting fuel/air mixture make up for a decrease in fuel efficiency from 19km/l (46mpg) to 15km/l (35mpg) when I knew the front cylinder is set too rich?
>>
>>15099220

What do you mean by 'make up for'?

Do you mean 'fix'?

I think it's pretty safe to assume that syncing carbs/tuning mix will get your fuel efficiency back to what it was
>>
>>15099220
>when I knew the front cylinder is set too rich?

well if its running to rich then it gets to much fuel doesnt it?

It think one can safely assume that more fuel in the mix leads to a higher fuel consumption, kinda like eating more leads to less food.

the top one is actually a 250 2t, so it'd be around 100kg ready to go, so yes, significantly lighter.

what's interesting is lighter doesn't necessarily = higher lean angles in motorcycle racing, there's a really great article from casey stoner where he talks a lot about the different way each GP motorcycle rides, he actually claims motoGP bikes are easier to turn than 250 GP bikes (what? I know) because you're cutting different lines, 250's are all about wider lines (ie less lean angle) and continually holding the speed right on the limit of highsiding while motoGP bikes you brake harder, go slower and turn sharper.

Really interesting read.

I want to get rid of my bike quickly, can't really afford the insurance anymore and it's hard to maintain at this apartment I moved to. It runs fine, but the fairings are cracked. There's some competition in the area, at $2000-2500, also with cracked and scratched fairings. What's the best way of going about this? I'm willing to lose some money to make a quick sale.

If I list my bike at $1500 will I get a flood of retards offering 30¢ on the dollar?
>>
>>15099655

We have a bunch of 250-300cc riders that come down here.
Everyone is super laid back and chill for the most part
>>
>>15099681
Sell for the lowest priced competition. if there are some selling for 2k and some for 2.5k, sell for 2k. That's quickest way for the most money. The absolute quickest way is 1.5k, with no negotiations, and I'm sure it will gone in like a week. Low priced ninjas sell pretty easy, I got 5 offers in 1 day for selling mine at 2k.
>>
>>15099681
If it runs well and has reasonable miles you could probably list it at 2k and get 'talked down' to 1.7k in a few days but that also depends on where you're at. As the riding season picks up more people will be looking to buy.

Won't sell as fast as a 250 though.

Then don't make motorcycles the priority conversation, don't wear gear every place you go to. I mean seems easy enough, just don't be obnoxious. It's okay to post a trip picture or something interesting with a bike. It's okay to show your interest in motorcycles. Some people will hate you regardless of your attitude because of you have a motorcycle, others will like it and think it's cool. It's just something that happens.
If your conversation starter with anybody is "I have a motorcycle." Then you're done anyways and should probably take some lessons on how to talk to people.

Yeah, i was thinking about ways to replicate my fenders today and do it cheap and easy. We have one at my college.

I want to replicate the fenders in the vacuum and then chrome plate it. Making it lighter and alot more flexible.

You can easily engineer your own stuff. Design and implementation is engineering. But that's probably because I'm an engineering student so I have access to cool tools..
You go to lowes or any materials shops online(which sucks because shipping metals takes forever), buy what you need, and manufacture it at a workshop. At the moment I'm working on 2 projects. Reinforcing cheap wal-mart boots and building a flexible, comfortable, armored jacket that costs less than good 500+ jackets. The catch is that certain areas that get ripped can be replaced like a module if it gets damaged, reducing cost of the jacket.

Not sure if this is a stupid question or not but what's a good motorcycle for around 7-8 grand? Never had a street bike before but ridden dirt bikes up to a 500 and a wr250. I was think about something with more of a streetfighter look.
>>
>>15099856
>chrome plating plastic
fuck, coating the plastic in copper or nickle and then chrome sounds like a awful process.

making the molds and cutting the flash and fitting would be the most time consuming imo. After seeing it done now I really think it'd be something cool to try. Seems pretty inexpensive too compared to injection molding.

Yes, he did. But you can start from anything.

He takes all the existing protection off and replaces it with steel. Though that is a weeb kind of video, the same can be applied to motorcycle protection that you might want to make yourself.

Of course, use much less steel and spread it on places where you may be hurt whilst falling

>>
>>15099905
why would you replace the existing protectionf with steel
>>15099916
or any metal

The protection is there to absorb the kinetic energy, why replace something made of soft plastic with something made of steel
>>
>>15099916
He uses aluminum many times. But the armor he's doing is supposed to defend from knifes and bullets and shit like that, not to be flexible for falls.
>>15099925
He is using it as an example on how to cut the steel to get protection.
So basically he's removing plastic and replacing it with steel so you know how to cut yours when you try.

>>
>>15099820

>>15099925
soft plastic could crack, if you skid, abrade it and make it useless. With metal it wouldn't crack, and barely wear it down. You could absorb kinetic energy with high quality foam or layered material under the metal, that way it can be reused.
If you want to spend real money, you could get some composites wouldn't crack nor abrade as easily, and in certain circumstances actually handle it better than metal while being lighter.
>>
>>15099895
>>15099904
All a little too close to the end of my budget. What about something a little older? I want to have some money left over. What about getting a regular bike and taking the fairings off? What're some good looking bikes to turn into a streetfighter?

>>15099907
Don't really like the look of it but seems pretty comfy.
>>
>>15099938
I'm just saying that the principle for making protection is the same as those in the videos.

You can literally just strap the steel for places where you most need it for falls instead of the places where he is putting it.

If you were going to make a business out of it you might make it, but I don't know if you could make the fairings the same as the manufacturer. They might shove a lawyer so far up your ass for patent infringement that it wouldn't be funny.

it should start. If it pops once, like you had fuel and spark but didnt start, take choke half off. Find top dead center again, Dog it again.

take 150$ off the asking price erry time you have to dog it again and it doesn't start

maybe it's the new york city driver in me, but i would've sped up past that uhaul and got in front, then lane change to pass the black pickup, then lane change again since the white van moved up enough for me to pass if i went fast enough.

i love those snake-like lane change opportunities.
