You know, for stuff to do, how about a steeplechase?

Like, someone goes and scouts a long course that winds all over the place. Then for each major course change, they write a clue pointing in a cardinal direction (and distance) towards the next change. Have a set start point, a few checkpoints, a finish line with a prize worth trying to get, and then you race to see who gets there fastest. It's not about your speed, but how well you know your city and how well you can figure shit out on the fly to race against the clock.

Obviously it would take a lot of work to set up and run, but it might be a lot of fun.

Once upon a time, in 1836, there was a town called Gonzales settled by Texians in Mexican Texas. The town of Gonzales had a tiny cannon to help defend against bloodthirsty injuns.

Now, at the time, just as today, the Mexican government was filled with corruption. There was much resistance to the government of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, and General Santa Anna used his armies to crush it.

One day, the Mexican Army came to Gonzales to demand the cannon back, fearing that it would be used against their rule. The people of Gonzales, however, defied the Mexican army and raised a white flag with a black cannon and star, and the words "COME AND TAKE IT" written on the bottom.

Then they shot the Mexicans with it. This was the first battle of the Texan Revolution.

Soon after, the Mexicans laid siege to the mission at San Antonio and slaughtered everyone inside. This place is known as the Alamo, and the cry of "Remember the Alamo!" caused the revolution to spread.

After the defeat at the Alamo, the Texian militias lead by General Sam Houston retreated across half the state before meeting the Mexican army on the shores of Buffalo Bayou in what is now Deer Park. They attacked at dawn while General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was busy going to town on a mixed slave girl now immortalized in the song "The Yellow Rose of Texas". After about ten minutes of battle, the 600 Texians defeated the Mexican army, killing 600 and capturing the remaining 700 and Santa Anna himself, while losing only a handful of men.

General Houston later had Santa Anna shipped to Washington DC to sign a formal treaty recognizing the independence of the Republic of Texas, overseen by President Andrew "try to assassinate me and I'll beat you half to death with my cane" Jackson.

The end.

We all have decently fast vehicles, some are shitboxes but still go pretty quick. Obviously not the fastest vehicles around so that's why I'm thinking Twisty Roads is the best, only problem is.. we're living in Houston. Either way, doing it on Galveston is a fucking stupid place to do it. GPD do not fuck around. They are bored out of their ass 80% of the time, so if they get even one call about people hooning around they will call up every tow truck on the island to impound your ass.

That said Harborside and Old Port Industrial are comfy as *fuck* to cruise at night. I just wouldn't risk an organized race on them.

I agree with pretty much everything except HWAT.

And perhaps Happy Tea House, because that parking lot was cramped, and there was barely enough seating for everyone the first time.

It's got some good feng shui, though, felt like we were a neo Mid Night Club. We need something with more space, though.
>>
>>15077970
yeah i'm just thinking towards the future. even if somebody puts a scavenger hunt/road rally type thing together with different points around houston. start a stopwatch when each person leaves the parking lot, and take any route you want to hit all the points on the list. take a picture at each point for proof, and the lowest elapsed time with all the points is the winner
>>
>>15078134
HWAT is what most people wanted. It's been voted on. The meetup and finish location will be voted on for each meet though.
>>
>>15078167
There was a time where there wasn't an "other" option for the name, so we don't know how many were aware that they could edit their response.

Maybe we can be HWAT online, but have a different name for club stickers?
>>
>>15078205
I added it a few days ago, posted about it, and let everyone know they could edit their answers by going back. Unless a bunch of people want it changed we're not voting on it again. Personally I don't care for HWAT either, but it's what most wanted.
>>
>>15078205
let it evolve naturally. as we meet more, the group will get a better identity and we will probably get a name that everyone relates to. no need to force it or try or take it too seriously. we are on a taiwanese moving picture site.
>>
>>15078217
>>15078234
Fair enough. It'll probably take a few more meets before we really get an idea of the direction we want to go.
>>
>>15077787
>>15078142
That's what the steeplechase suggestion upthread was.
>>
>>15078240
steeplechase was more like getting directions as you go vs getting it all at once and quickly planning a route. everybody just needs to buy their own stopwatch and have timekeepers at the start/end point with the watches.
>>
>>15078288
desu that'd probably be safer to do even if it does take more effort to set up and run. If we're going to actually run a race, it needs to be safe and street legal.

>>
>>15078378
We're all NEETs, anon. If we're going to do a "race" as a group, we shouldn't do something that invites police attention or breaks any laws they can hammer us with.

Wangan runs on 610 in the dead of night are one thing, a race on city streets is another.
>>
>>15078335
>>15078378
>>15078387
Well, yeah it has to be "street legal". We would have to do it on the honor system that if you get stopped, you are disqualified, and your time does not count.
Timekeepers will chill at the tea house, and the race will begin when the driver starts his stop watch and runs to his car in a le mans style start. Starts will be staggered in 10 minute intervals, and the drivers will be given 10 minutes to plan their route before leaving, so when one driver leaves the next driver is given the points. then the timekeepers just wait for everybody to get back and hit their stopwatches again.
>>
This isn't for the next meet, but for future ideas.

Does anyone know if there are any arcades left in a 100 mile radius? Maybe they've got some Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune, or Initial D cabinets? Or just anything racing related. They were fun as fuck when they were around, but I don't know if anyone in this whole municipality has arcades left. Just a suggestion.
>>
>>15078462
There's always Dave and Busters, but I don't think they've got Initial D cabinets. Hell, I don't know if any have existed in Houston for years if they did at all.

>>15078434
I dunno. A straight timed race like that just devolves to speed fairly quickly, especially if you can lay your route out with GPS.
>>
Okily dokily, guys. Well it seems in regards to terrain, we're highly limited on local options, though I'm sure you guys already knew that.

As far as touges are concerned, anything, south, central, or east is non-existent and barren.

Meaning our only options are to the west and/or to the north. Looking forward to any suggestions.

They would on the city streets. Either way, I'm saying that's boring for a group race. We already go fast. If we're going to do a point-to-point, it should have more going for it than just "go WOT following your GPS".
>>
>>15078566
it wouldn't be just on city streets, the points would be spread around Houston. If you want any kind of driving competition within the group, this is going to be the safest. If you don't want to do it, you can always be a timekeeper.
Also, yes, people will likely be speeding regardless of "breaking the rules", but there's a limit to how much somebody is going to speed in a certain area just based off of common sense. Nobody here is going to blast through a school zone at 70 mph just so they can beat a Camry and a Civic in the Inaugural Autist Road Rally
>>
Why can't we just set up a street circuit somewhere?
>>
>>15078635
No, you misunderstand. I'm arguing for the other kind of point-to-point race.
>>
>>15078663

Maybe one of these areas?
>>
>>15078704
Ok, but even one at a time, how will they be given instructions and at what points? And once they have been given the instructions, won't they just "WOT and follow GPS" to their next point?
It just seems needlessly complicated to something that is basically achieving the same thing, but needing much more time to do so because it can only be done one at a time.
>>
>>15078678
It's like a treasure map. You give people the whole route with directions and distances between landmarks/course changes on the route. If you know Houston well enough, you could recognize a few and take shortcuts to them to earn time back. If you don't, you can just follow the directions and think on your feet. In between, you have a couple checkpoints to keep track of everyone, maybe splitting up the route so all the racers have to go through the checkpoints. Make a post in the thread with the actual address of the checkpoint after a certain time period has passed so nobody gets TOTALLY lost and the stragglers eventually make their way to the finish line. Have a prize for the person with the fastest time and a joke prize for the one with the slowest.

Now, I'm not going to lie, that's going to take a LOT of effort to set up, so maybe it should be what to do in July, but I think it'd be fun. I remember doing one like it with the A&M car club up in College Station.
>>

>>
>>15078495
Something north of Spring, around FM1314 and FM242.
>>
>>15078759
So, it's pretty much exactly what I suggested, just with added complications. See >>15078142 and >>15078434
Drivers will be given the points 10 minutes prior to their start and choose any route to take. What don't you like about that plan?
>>
>>15078789
You're not actually giving them addresses or direct identifiers that you can plug in. It's much more about planning on the fly than it is routing it out beforehand.
>>
>>15078801
Not sure what you're trying to say here. I was thinking more along the lines of "Beer Can House" or "AstroDome" as points, not addresses. Did you want addresses? I mean, people can be given all the points as soon as they start their stopwatch if you want to do it that way. I just think this is the easiest way to accomplish what we are trying to do. Sure, if we had a bunch of people willing to put in man hours we could make a crazy road rally, but we have to work with what we have.
>>
>>15078751
The idea is competition, like need for speed. Personally I much prefer togue or running the loop together. I'm just taking hypotheticaly
>>
>>15078836
It is a competition. Lowest elapsed time wins. Running the loop together will always be there, but it will be much harder/more dangerous to make a competition out of that.

>>15078495
The closest thing we can get to a toegay is the Livingston Circuit, or portions thereof.
>>
>>15078821
No, I mean like you scout out the whole route, figure out where you make each turn, and write a descriptor for it. If you know the part of Houston that you're running in well enough you can go "Wait, I know what that is, I can get there faster by doing this".
>>
>>15078884
Yeah, Lake Conroe or Lake Livingston seem like the best spots.

We could have our own designated Lake Akina/Lake Haruna.
>>
>>15078894
Again, needlessly complicated. Look, we have to work with what we have and there is going to have to be compromises on how "fancy" the rally is. Additionally, since you are allowed to go off the pre-determined course, what's to stop somebody from just scanning through the directions and just finding the key points?
>>
I just want to do a race like the opening scene of 2 Fast 2 Furious, is that so much ask. ;~;

(Wasn't part of the conversation involving street rally.)
>>
>>15078917
None of the roads around Conroe are suitable.

I've already run the Livingston Circuit a few times. Only one guy showed up for the meet I tried to host for it though, and he refused to drive fast because noballs.

It's a long run though, so maybe just specific parts except for special events. Fortunately, most of it is completely empty.

The most >fun part is 224, but there's almost always some truck driving along at 30mph to ruin it. 924 is probably the best bet, since it's always completely empty, though it's not as windy.

Seems like north is the only way to go.
>>
So, someone's going to have to do some scouting to make sure the roads check out.

The Brazos Circuit of the Dagumis worked because multiple people have driven on it before. Finding new ground, it's hard to tell how enjoyable a circuit will be judging just by the lines on a map. Any volunteers?

Maybe if some people are up for it, there could be a scouting group that could test them out in tandem, or try different roads simultaneously.

Whatever the name is, it needs to look cool on a sticker stuck to the rear quarter panel.

The Initial D team names are what we should be going for. Akina Speed Stars, Akagi Red Suns, Miyogi Night Kids, et cetera.

Something like Houston Orange Flames or something else that reflects the area. You can see the refinery flares in Pasadena really well from the south loop heading eastbound over 45.

Sprained my arm. Can't move or feel it much at the moment. Nothing else other than that.

Didn't see the turn in time. Going downhill at a decent grade, by the time I realized a turn was taking place, it was too sharp, too late, and the overhanging ditch too deep for me to get enough traction to stop in time.

Some neighbors down the road said they heard the crash. They said people go off that turn often enough that it's called Dead Man's Curb.

Doesn't run. Wrecker fees for just the first day are $415. The estimate to tow it back to Houston is an additional $375-400.

In between jobs means both the car and I are probably irreversibly fucked.

>>15090310
Liability only.

>>15091915
The unfamiliarity is definitely what hurt me.

>>15093136
>>15093320
That's the worst of it, I wasn't even going that fast. Compared to the runs I was doing the rest of the night, which were taken at 90-100 with no problem, during this stretch I slowed down to a cruising speed of about 50-60, but had lost my bearings and was in the process of re-routing. The complete darkness and lack of road foreknowledge + temporary lack of maps meant even reasonable speeds were too great for a turn unseen in blind darkness.

F1 engine swap when I stop being an incredibly poor fag, which seems like a distinct impossibility now.

I guess I'm out. There's nothing I can do anymore. I always felt like I was the joke of the group, anyway, even at the first meet, just because I've never been fortunate enough to climb out of poverty and own a respectable vehicle.

It's my own damn fault.

i was surprised at how everyone turned out to be mostly normal, helpful, and funny

i got the old tacoma and a chain if you want to tow it from where it is back to your place to save money on a tow truck doing it. as long as it rolls straight and the steering works

then we could go car shopping, or really its pretty much motorcycle season
>>
>>15093752
As rough as it may sound, learn from this. Don't go racing around unlit roads that you don't know late at night. There are risks, then there are /o/ risks, and there are STUPID risks. For all we joke and how casually we treat speed, cars are dangerous and should be treated with respect.

Don't stop driving, but don't forget this day. Learn from it.
