I was thinking an old holden v8 with a chevy small block because there are heaps of cheap parts.

re-asking here

Would a bad shifter ball bushing cause enough play for the transmission to not hold 1st gear properly? it goes into 1st fine, even when moving, but unless I hold it, it flops around, and will occasionally pop out of gear if I'm not careful. vehicle is a 91 Hilux, if that matters. I already replaced the rubber seal that sits in the shifter hole, which did eliminate a lot of the shifter slop in general. i noticed that the little flat plastic bushing on the bottom of the shifter would rotate freely on the ball. not sure if it's supposed to do that or not.

Yeah the negative battery terminal. It didn't seem like a huge amount of corrosion or anything, but I'd tightened it too much and it just kind of turned to dust near the base. The top of it was still intact in the ring that makes contact.

What is this ''before /o/ after /o/'' meme? I don't have the picture currently, but there are a lot of cars in the ''after /o/'' section.

What are those cars? What is this meme about?
>>
>>15017726
There are two, one full of Renault Twingos, and one with Mazda Miata/MX-5s. The Twingo is meme because it's cheapo, pretty basic, and looks kinda cute.

The Miata because it's small 2 seat roadster, it's good handling, rather good looking. But moat of all you can have a open sports car, despite being a poorfag.

And remember, here on /o/ the single moat important aspect of a car is it's price. Pretty much everyone here is poor

Sometimes when my car is sitting overnight, and the engine is nice and cool, when I start it the engine sounds like it's sucking in air. This is coupled with the fact that when I press the accelerator, it sounds as if it's sucking air through the valve into the engine, and it has been starting to run slightly rough, so I wonder if air is being sucked in where it shouldn't be?

Please help.

My catalytic convert has went into fucked mode, it rattles loudly when I'm idling.

I'm going to get the cat cut off and have it straight piped, but there's a problem, it's a V6.

I really don't want to be "that guy with a straight piped V6" but it's the cheapest way to get rid of the cat. The muffler is staying on

Anyone have an idea on how it'll sound? What other opinions do I have while staying stupidly cheap?

Its most likely a rusted headshield. just get underneath the car, and remove it.

with my experiance, any beaner muffler shop will remove it without issue. just take it with you, its worth like $60

also, without a glassback muffler, your exhaust may sound shitty.
>>
>>15018616
I mean remove the rusted heatshield yourself.
If you want, a beaner shop will remove the cat, and replace it with a straight pipe.

Toyota/Aisin transmissions are famous for having shifter bushing issues. They allow a ton of slop in the shifter making sloppy shifts and wandering gears almost guaranteed. Also, the plastic bushing on the tip is supposed to rotate freely, that's OK. There are aftermarket kits that solve the bushing issues, if you are interested.

However, the gear is held in by a detent along the shifter rail. Basically, a ball bearing sits on a spring and rides along the fork shaft. At specific points, (namely in gear), the ball falls into a ground out spot givving that 'popping' into gear feeling, and holding the shaft from coming out. See attached image. The balls (2) are e pressed against the shaft (6 and 8) by the spring (1). When it falls into one of the notches on the shaft, you're in gear.

When the spring gets worn out, it takes less and less force for the detent to pop out, until it may not take any force at all. This sounds more like your problem.

Two common symptoms of worn-out detents are popping out of gear during acceleration/deceleration, or just having to hold the gear in all of the time. It usually happens more with high-milage vehicles, or city driven vehicles that shift a lot. You should feel a firm, positive pop when going into gear. Detents are often shared, so 1-2 both should have firm pops. If only one does, then your problem may be elsewhere.

I've never had a case of enough slop in the shifter to cause it to come out of gear, but Its been a long while since I've rebuilt a W56. If memory serves right, the transmission must be taken apart to get to the detents. I don't think it has a shifter tower... By not fixing the detent, you are not causing damage to the transmission, however.

Long air boxes/tubing sometimes do that. I had a Jeep TJ with the 4.0L that the PO put a CAI with a pod filter on it. When you would start it, it would sound like hurricane katrina in a tunnel. After it warmed up and the idle kicked down, it would go away. The tube would just sound like it was 'sucking', as you said. I looked for a vaccum leak even though it ran fine, but it was after I took off the filter and covered the intake with my hand that I found out it was just resonating at that engine rpms.

Have a friend with a 2009 Ford superduty that does it too, but that has a turbo. His would actually whistle.

Unless you're having drivability issues, I wouldn't think twice about it. Check vacuum hoses, especially PCV and brake booster, if you have them. Otherwise, run it til it dies.

I'm considering something similar. The idea of a relatively minimal, almost wholly mechanical car is getting more appealing as new cars keep getting more bloated.

So I'm trying to get my distributor out of my 94 Firebird with the LT1, I've gotten the waterpump removed, but and all three bolts to the crankshaft pulley removed but I just can't seem to get the damn pulley off.

I've tried the pulley removers from auto zone but the bolt threads that come with those are too small, and the stock bolts are too thick to fit through the assembly. I also really don't want to get it out of time, so if there's anyway to 'lock' the crankshaft so I don't move it that would be wonderful.

Does an engine having a higher output mean it will become damaged easier? So if you take a stock motor and put an aftermarket intake and exhaust on it and improve the WHP, does the engine suffer?
>>
>>15028295
Typically with an aftermarket intake you're looking at better airflow, but worse filtration so more shit gets into the engine, and may cause damage if you don't up the maintenance to deal with it.

But IRL it makes basically no difference unless you're moving from a truck air cleaner to to filter at all while living in the sahara

I'm looking at getting something that'll last and be comfy. I found a 1997 Lexus LS400 for just under $4K. 1 owner, 157k.
>What's the cost of maintenance and to own on one of these?
If something goes wrong, i don't wanna break the bank fixing it.
There's a reason I'm looking at getting something this old and cheap.
I don't care for looks, and actually kinda like it's subtle looks.

Alright /o/rphans, fairly simple questions, but here goes.

Buying a manual car tomorrow, I've test driven it enough to be able to drive it but I'm still extremely worried about stalling it at a stoplight.

With that said, here come the questions.

>What is the most braindead way to easily shift neutral to 1st without stalling?

>tips on city driving?

>how to inch forward in traffic?

I've got the whole engine braking + rev match concept down, these are literally the only things I have left that bother me.
>>
>>15031182
Depends on how much torque your car has. Getting going easily in my car is a matter of letting off the clutch until right when you feel the car start to move, let it a tiny bit further, then hold it and modulate the throttle to control acceleration. If you want to creep, give it a little throttle and then out the clutch back in. If you want to launch, give it a lot of gas and dump the clutch the rest of the way. But I always start with slipping it a little to get the car moving a bit. This is also better for the car if you do decide to hard launch it because it takes the slack out of the drivetrain.
>bought a car with a stage 2 clutch/short throw shifter in November

Its more fuel efficient to go slow. And use the lowest gear without lugging the engine.

The older ones 4.0 and 3.8 v6 were decently reliable but not so great on gas or power.
The new 3.7 is quite a bit better on gas and power and has been just as reliable,if not more so.

Well the best way to find out would be try it one way for a while and average your mpgs then try it the other way and average that. Might be different for different cars, drivers, traffic conditions etc. I say find out what works best for your situation. Theres some work involved in that though.

Start with a full tank and just record how many miles you get with it. Do the same for the next fill up but use the other shifting method. Divide miles by the size of your tank to get the approx mileage. Sure it wont be 100% accurate but it should be close enough to see a difference between the two. >although statistically you would have to do more than one test of each for accuracy but that seems unnecessary in this case.

Is turbo vs supercharger a matter of opinion nowadays or is there a distinct pro/con between them?
>>
>>15032775
That depends. The 370 is miles better than the 350 and ive had a hard time finding a 350 that wasnt beat to death because the prices are pretty low right now. Dont forget that theres a lot of cars in that price range that offer similar or better performance. But if thats the car you're wanting. I would personally wait for a 370 in the right price.
>>
>>15032799
Turbocharger produces typicall more power. Negative is that it takes time to spool up, relying on the exhaust.
Supercharger produces less power but there's no lag because it's driven from the crankshaft.
>>
>>15032813
Isn't turbo lag a myth?
>>
>>15032799
>ohboyherewego.gif

Turbos are more efficient, but theres some lag at high boost levels.
Superchargers are instant. But different strokes for different folks because the differences between them dont make or break either one.
They both make boost. They both sound cool. Pick whatever is cheaper/easier to install in you car pretty much.
>>
>>15032819
Nowadays lag is hardly noticable unless your pushing 16+ pounds of boost. But it is there.
>>
>>15032819
It can be almost eliminated with a smaller turbo (at the cost of less power), a system of dual turbos (one small that spools up quick and one bigger that engages after a certain rpm, which is relatively complex) or with a fancy air blowing system (compressed air is stored and blown into the turbo to keep it from slowing down too much and lagging) like the one Volvo has been trying to introduce in their engines lately

If the bigger pump is putting out too much it may try to push fuel back to the smaller pump. If you put the smaller pump in line supplying fuel to the larger pump it may make the bigger pump cavitate and overheat it. Placing the larger pump feeding the smaller pump will just limit your fuel output to the level of the small pump. May run a little higher pressure. That's my guess anyways.

I was always under the assumption that diesels dont have throttle bodies as they use fuel injection, rather than limiting air flow.

but, my VW Diesel 2-0 Turbo, when under boost and letting off can hear the intake charge 'whoosh' or whatever the term is.

is this just the charge hitting slowing valves, or could this diesel have some sort of blowoff.
>>
>>15034392
A lot of diesels do have "throttle" bodies that are used to switch the engine off by suffocating it to prevent the good old inconvenience that happened a while ago when diesels kept running even if you pulled the key out of the barrel. It's not a throttle body tho and it stays open as long as the engine runs.

The change in noise could very well be a wastegate or something else making more noise than usual.

Diesels don't have proper throttle bodies that need the protection of a blow off system

Can you get bird shit and dust and muck off your windows between washes?

I got some glass cleaner, a clean microfibre cloth, and a burner cotton cloth I can use on the outside and get dirty.

I just inherited my first car from my aunt who really wanted to get rid of it.

It seems to work fine but when I'm stopped at a red light sometimes the gas pedal will not respond even if I floor the pedal it just coasts gently forward and eventually sputters and start speeding up again. If I turn off the car off completely, it will reset the problem like nothing's happened. I have no idea what causes it but it's almost always when I'm stopped or idling for a while.

No idea what the fuck is wrong with it, no engine light, ODB finds no codes. It's an automatic tho.

the new plugs can affect the amount of fuel that is burned and that would directly impact your emissions system. That being said, your old plugs would have needed to be pretty beat up or old to cause an emissions issue and would most likely have given you a misfire code well before any emissions stuff.

Also, consider that they could be not related at all. if you have an issue that is intermittent it will throw a code, then function normally long enough for the computer to reset the code (usually a set number of "cycles").

So maybe you fixed it, maybe you didn't. what were the codes if you can recall?

If you're running a high compression piston, do you need high compression top end gaskets/rings?

I have a JE high compression piston and I was in the process of rebuilding the engine and bought Namura piston rings ($20 vs $40) and a gasket kit from TopEndGaskets.

The gaskets that were with the engine before were noticeably thicker than the aftermarket gaskets. The aftermarket gaskets leaked oil, but it may have just been a cheap brand.

I put it back together and it was running fine for a while, but now it's smoking like a freight train.

As far as 1.5 and 2 way LSD's in racing go - Would the locking % be essentially describing the shape of the 'notch' in the pressure rings or the strength of the friction discs in the clutch pack?
>>
Can you import an r33 or r34 into america if it will only be used as a track car?
>>
Should I repair my Celica's clutch and keep it or just trade it in as it is

I dont wanna spend 1k on a shitbox FWD pos, but its still a rare manual 2zz. Theres nothing else interesting below 10k either...Dont know what to do.

Would a vacuum leak cause a vehicle to stall while at low RPM's?
>>
>>15044720
Yes
But so cam a lot of other things.
>>
What are all the things I need for a head gasket replacement? Is it just a head gasket and head bolts? Or will I need more?
>>
Are there any brands of oil I should avoid? I don't really care about which is the best I just want to avoid the worst.
>>
>>15044405
The steepness of the notches describe how fast and abruptly the lock happens, the number and thickness of the friction plates describe how strong the lock is.
So, to answer your question, the percentage depends more on the amount of plates

Bought some used shocks online. Checked the threading and saw this. It looks like there's threading within the thread.

Should i return it, or will it hold?
>>
>>15045455
Looks like the idiot cross threaded it.

Hey just saw this, I'm who you were responding to.

I doubt those plugs were causing the code, but maybe it's possible.they were certainly due for a change so good on you for doing it, I'm sure your truck thanks you.

Regarding that code, it can sometimes be an issue with the gas cap not being tight, or a leak in the vacuum lines that is used in the evap system. If it comes back check there.
>>
>>15045455
That looks like a helicoil. Means they fucked up the original threads and repaired it. Hard to tell which part of the shock that is from your pic. Could be ok, could not. Depends how much stress it's going to see.
