This thread is about the glorious Diesel engines such as;

Indenor XD 4.88
Ford 4AB
Mercedes OM602
Datsun SD22
Isuzu C190
Perkins 4.108

Please share your experience with these engines or similar.

Only rule is no turbo, coal burning, or electronics allowed.
And no VW shits.

Dodge Charger with Cummins Turbodiesel swap

This triggers the OP
>>
>>14839693

Twin Turbo is even better. The BMW N47 in the 123d puts out 204bhp from a 1995cc engine. and a simple remap makes it put out 260bhp.

Pretty good from a rattly diesel.

Duck you OP!

Every diesel truck I've driven and every diesel tractor has been turbocharged. Hearing the turbo spool up on a tractor means some serious shits about to go down.

And a Case I6 Turbo diesel WOT still sounds amazing.
>>
The fuel itself is just so viscous that it doesn't vapourise and atomise effectively at higher RPMs.

That's what limits RPM and hence power so much in diesel engines. Not so much the heavier reciprocating components to deal with the higher compression.
It's just inferior to petrol, unless you want fuel economy. See the various companies trying to make HCCP work
>>
But muh torks! At very usable revs you say. Thing is a nice big petrol engine will have low down torks too AND will scream when they get to higher revs

>>
>>14844102
Not sure that is the reason for the limit to engine rpm in diesels.

It's because of the combustion process. In petrol engines, there is a single flame front, and the effect of increased in-cylinder turbulence speeds up the "turbulent burn" phase of the combustion process.
Increased engine rpm (and swirl) increase turbulence, so the speed of combustion and heat release increases with engine speed. In petrol engines, as the engine speed rises, the combustion process speeds up in parallel.

By contrast, in diesels, the non-homogenous charge means the combustion proecess is completely different. and does not speed up with engine speed. At higher rpms the power stroke would be too short (in terms of time, in seconds/milliseconds) for combustion to complete. Hence there is a low engine speed limit.

Atomisation of the fuel can be achieved through extremely high injection pressures, currently over 2000 bar and ever-climbing. Modern diesel injectors are quite incredible pieces of kit, in terms of both high pressures and control. But no-matter how well you atomise the fuel, there are issues with the stratified-charge compression ignition process that limit engine speed (and more importantly, lead to high NOx and PM emissions).

HCCI is probably a no-go, in terms of complexity. But higher injection pressures, modified fuel injector geometry and maybe some form of premixed combustion (PCCI) may be feasible.

Also, the idea that diesels are low-powered in something of a misnomer. Everyones looks only at displacement and power output, as if one 2,0l engine is directly comparable with another. These are really just design choices in the hands of the engineer.

And the crazy thing is, OEMs are actually looking at reducing specific power in diesels again, and reversing the downsizing trend. Moving back to bigger engines with lower specific power, lower combustion temps and lower NOx emissions.

Great post. Your last point was quite interesting: are there examples of companies changing engines in the way you are describing?

Titanium is stronger/tougher than steel at the same weight, and since titanium is much lighter than steel it means a 1/4" piece of steel is still stronger than a 1/4" piece of titanium.

For petrols and diesels kind of the same thing.
Diesels put out more torks at lower revs, meaning less fuel consumption needed to move whatever needs to be moved.
So economy is a factor, but the biggest reason why industrial machinery is always Diesel, is because Diesels last thousands more hours.
>>
Although I still think there's no replacement for good ol' displacement.

My next engine will be an LS3.
Put it on LPG. Sorted

Right, kinda ignored that for some reason.
>>
>>14844744
Basically.

High strength steel will be much "tougher" than titanium and a lot cheaper too.

Titanium is basically just high strength for light weight. But it's so expensive even aircraft manufacturers wouldn't use it. Hell, the new Boeing uses mostly composite materials for the fuselage. Aluminium is mostly too heavy for even that now
>>
>>14844754
By tougher I mean it may be in all shapes and sizes but it won't have failed

To be honest, not much that is available right now. The only real example is Audi's new EA888 TFSi. But it’s petrol.
http://www.greencarcongress.com/2015/05/20150514-gen3b.html

This paper by BMW talks about the potential of “rightsizing” for diesels: http://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007%2F978-3-658-08844-6_95 . I couldn’t find a publically available source though.

Basically, it’s driven by the move away from the NEDC emissions test cycle, to a higher-load cycle (WLTC) and real-world emissions testing. For higher loads, the "optimum” engine architecture to pass the emissions test is moved towards larger displacement.

>>
>>14844744
It's not just the torques, you could make a gas engine with as many torques as you want.
Compression ignition is just inherently more energy efficient.
>>
>>14838726
why would anyone insulate their engine with paint?
>>
>>14845728
My guess is its marinized, so probably to protect it from salt water corrosion.
