Been thinking about buying one for a little while now, need a bit of advice probably
>>
get 2003 or newer because older ones burn oil.

they are not fast, especially not the GTs, so do not expect it to be.

they are, however, fun little cars that look nice and have nice interiors.
>>
>>14776138
Had a 2003 GTS, was ok. Interior was nice, handling was good but slow around town due to no torque.

Blew it's o rings at 136k miles, burning half its oil reserve in a single drive so I got rid of it.
>>
>>14776144
Im thinking of having one as more of a daily so as long as it has even a little bit of speed here or there, id be fine. you wouldnt happen to have any personal suggestions, would you? Im also fond of the previous generation celicas as well
>>
>>14776183
like i said, just get after 2003 if youre going for that gen and even then check the oil every drive.

you could also get like a ~1995 one, those are nice but never owned one
>>
>>14776176

>>
>>14776195
Thanks, it was hard because the interior/exterior was absolutely mint. But I wasn't going to change the engine.

I own 2 Mitsubishi now (08 eclipse, 15 lancer) but I'd buy another 7th gen celica if I came across one, I liked the car a lot.

they do though

what the fuck was going on at Toyota around that time? a lot of their 4 cylinders were buring oil, I've got a 2006 RAV4 with the shitty 4 cylinder and it burns about a quart between oil changes.

I don't know, I read they were going through some issues with engine sludge at the time. With mine I think it was probably just the result of the previous owner driving the shit out of it but who knows.

>pic related, rip
>>
>>14776138
I have a 2002 Celica GT that I run as my daily driver. I love it. It's all show and no go, but that's okay. I have a fairly long commute each day, and it handles well, goes fast enough, and I personally think they look good.

Have thought about swapping in a 2ZZ and six-speed transmission, but decided that until I run into the issue with the piston rings sticking (causing excessive oil consumption), I'll stay with the 1ZZ.

Anyway, go get one and enjoy it, if you're looking for a decent ricey looking daily driver. I've not had a single problem with my GT, and have put nearly 70,000 miles on it in 3 year.

Just stay on top of your oil changes, etc. Take care of it and it'll take care of you.
>>
What about 1991 Celicas? I've seen one of those with 250k km for about 1000 eurobux in pretty good shape.
Don't know If I should give up my 90' Corolla for it.
Seems like a car that is bound to have something going on for being that good for that price.
>>
2500lb car with a peaky 180hp engine (GTS) and good handling. The aftermarket is pretty good for it. I don't see why you shouldn't buy one.

OP here. For instance, this is one of the celicas in my area that i might consider checking out. Im in love the look and what they've done to the car in terms of cosmetics, though it has shit ton of fuckin miles and idk if it'd be a reliable choice.

Bad idea OP, with mileage and year of that Celica, the engine is probably burning oil, badly.

Also, please don't consider the automatic. The car is already slow enough as it is.
>>
>>14776214
i really like them and
>muh toyota reliability

but the only celicas i have ever driven were an automatic 2001 GT and a manual 91 GT.
>>
what is the story with this burning oil business? someone pls explain why these specific engines burn oil
>>
>>14777576
The ZZ series burns oil because.
Think they eliminated it around 2005.
>>
>https://www.celicahobby.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/301929/oil-consumption-solution.html

The oil consumption problem on 1ZZ-FE motors is caused by gummed up oil rings. The build up of half burnt oil causes the rings to stick in a contracted position inside their ring groove on the piston. This causes them not to come in full contact with the cylinder walls, causing oil to get by them & to burn off. In fact once it starts, the problem makes it self worse.

also, I used to be pretentious about manual vs auto, but ive had a lot of people tell me that standard is pain in houston traffic and its just not worth it on a daily driver, what do you think?

Well, speaking from experience of actually driving a manual Celica in Houston traffic. I say go for the auto. I used to work in the Galleria area and the roads were the worst, the traffic was the worst, and the car was just not in its element.

I drive manual all over stop and go St. Louis traffic. It's fine.

You're better off with the manual. A traditional torque converter 4-speed auto will kill any sporting pretense the 1ZZ/2ZZ ever had.

I have an 01 gt 5 speed manual, and a mate has a 99? Gts auto

Mines been incredibly reliable, oil isn't that huge of a deal, just stay on top of it

GT or gts, doesn't really matter, as for a daily you wont be lifting anyway

Just stay away from auto and get the mintest manual you can find and sheel be right

Theres honestly nothing wrong with the car aside from its looks.
I really dig a slightly older look or at least more sqared off and less round.

Im also considering gen5 preludes, do yall know muchabout those?

Don't buy, it's slow, suspention is stiff but understeers. Even my audi a4 has a better suspention for curvy roads.

I had the 143 hp version and the faster ones are also slow. Can confirm the oilburning problem. Seats are sporty and give you backpain after 200 km autobahn.
>>
>>14781087
Was that yours? Story?

>>14781106
Yeah, was my first car. The person in the pic is the dumb bitch that wrecked it.

>driving straight
>very confused cunt want to turn left in her little womans car
>i slam the breaks and steer away when i see her, too late
>Rams me full force in the side

I only slightly hit my head, not even the airbags went off. I was calm, what helped was that the cops saw it all, they were doing a report on an accident that happened there before.
She was fully guilty, we sued her for inflicting pain on me, got some extra 600€ from her insurance. And overall the payment was nice, i could have bought an other celica and some more.
>>
I had a 2000 i drove for 60k miles or so. It was great on gas and sufficiently peppy around town. You wont be fast but they look pretty cool and the styling has aged well IMO. Get an 03 for the better finishes like a glass sunroof. Only get one if you can drive stick. All the autos were crap. I think the GT auto is actually faster than the GTS auto because of the crappy torque curves.

The RSX is likely a better all arounder if you can stand the styling.

Hello retarded tripshit.

Welp, after the piston rings in the Probe bit the dust in quite a bad way (block was kill) I ended up buying one of these. GT model.
I gotta say, it's a light little car. Really great handling and the suspension is really nice stock. But it does have the ring issue itself, plan on putting the correct sizes in within the next month, along with a full head rebuild and maybe some new bearings on the bottom end. It isnt fast per se, lack of torque below 4k rpms, but once you hit 5k or so it fucking pulls.
Not the greatest car, but it looks and handles amazing. Im happy with the purchase.
>>
>>14784385
I've also seen that while the GT-S makes more power stock, due to the higher compression it's quite a bit harder to make good reliable power on. There's a pretty big aftermarket for the 1ZZ outside of just a TRD supercharger.
Eventually Im gonna do a FI setup for mine after I redo the head and lower end. I've already got headers and a catback on the way.
...and no it's not just some fartcan. The stock air box is pretty nice too once you get rid of the butterfly valve. But I suppose it may have to go if I want to s/c it at some point.
>>
>>14781087
I can confirm under high revs, the understeer gets pretty intense. But not so much that you lose control of it.
I actually liked the stiff suspension. Feels a lot better in corners and has good feedback.
I can't agree on the seats though. Yeah, they're bucket styled "racing" seats, but ive done a 400 miles round trip and had no back pain at all. They cradle me perfectly and Im 6'3/200lbs.
>>
