the majority thinks it's time for "the future" and they believe that stuffing everything into a tablet is progress.

they seriously think mechanical switches and knobs are old fashioned and a bad thing.

most of them would even use suicide telephone cells because it's futuristic.

The point of a gearbox is to provide mechanical advantage for an engine. ICE can't make power at 0 rpm.

A car with a battery already has all the power it needs in the battery, it simply doesn't need a gearbox. If you want to put one in that's cool too.

>>14755794
But electric motors are not efficient over a full speed range, why do you think all the top Formula E teams run gearboxes, fun? Not using a gearbox and relying on the ever decreasing torque of an electric engine (yes that is the correct term, see zytec) is stupid on a monumental level.

The whole climate change prevention shit is all crap anyway. Every single prediction has been wrong for like 30 years, in fact the earth has cooled half a degree in the last 5 years. Air quality is a real measure though, that shit matters.

What's your solution? Wind turbines that don't work half the time? Dams that destroy entire ecosystems? Solar that does nothing at night? Just face it, nuclear is the only solution we have that isn't going back to the fucking dark ages

quick notes on nuclear energy for everyone

>we haven't built a new nuclear power plant in a long time, R&D is already at gen IV+ reactor designs were are really safe and produce very little long term waste after recycling (which can definitely be stored safely for 10k years, there's just little political will to set that up)

>this is ignoring new technologies like liquid fluoride thorium reactors which run at atmospheric pressure, are thermally self-limiting systems meaning they shut down if they get too hot and can be "throttled" really easily, and the longest term waste they produce drops to background levels in 200 years and the waste is full of SUPER valuable isotopes. the whole thing runs on thorium with 100% burn up so you basically just drop a little pellet of thorium into a reactor feed tube every month or so and it powers a city

it's super easy to be misinformed about nuclear power because the knowledgebase is scattered and requires at least some knowledge of nuclear chemistry to "get", which is really uncommon

The thing about that Model 3 that is bad is that it's not a luxury vehicle. Tesla has poised itself as a luxury manufacturer akin to Mercedes-Benz or Jaguar by releasing two expensive but also finely made cars.

But the Model 3 is anything but. It's very barebones. Most of the price comes from the battery and motors, with batteries being also a production bottleneck. This means that there's very little to spare for other luxuries in the car.

If you go to Tesla's site now and look at the features they are touting about the Model 3, it is quite underwhelming, especially if you think about it as a luxury car.

>215 miles
That's the batteries, the brunt of the cost.
>Under 6 seconds
And the motor, again, large part of the overall cost.
>Seating for five adults
So it has two front seats and a backseat. Obviously you get some benefits with the motors being in the back with the footwell space in the back, but otherwise this isn't really anything special.
>5-Star Safety Rating
While good, it's basically just adapting the design and manufacturing process from the Model S and Model X. It's not in itself anything special for the Model 3.
>Autopilot Safety Features
This is mostly just a freebies, since Autopilot is largely dependent on the software, not the actual hardware. Of course, it costs some to add that hardware, but the R&D itself exists and the R&D is very much shared between all of the cars, so the cheap Model 3 doesn't have to finance the research.
>Supercharging
Okay?

I imagine that a lot of people are going to be disillusioned with the Model 3. Currently the Model S and Model X are creating a lot of positive press for Tesla and I imagine people expect the Model 3 to be the same. But it's clearly the cheap option in the range and is probably not going to be such a wild success.

Also, we currently have no idea about the specs, options and prices. The quoted $35k is most likely for a 40 kW. Who knows if it can even do the quoted 216 miles.
>>
>>14757071
keep in mind that you should be looking at competitors within its space, namely the Bolt.
the tesla looks a little nicer inside and out and feels more "future", and looks a little more premium

in this case the interior minimalism actually helps, it looks more like a concept car and the lack of interior adornments keeps costs lower

Does the Model 3 come with the full Autopilot suite as stock? Because on the website, it advertises "Autopilot Safety Features" as a stock feature of the car.

Then if you look at the Model S, one of the options you have in the builder is "Autopilot Convenience Features". So they are sort of separating the "this will keep you safe in case you fuck up" stuff from the "this will let you not focus on the driving as we do it for you" stuff.
>>
>>14757127

>>
>>14757134
it's vague, but
>speculation: they'll include all the autopilot hardware as standard but to get anything more than the really based crash avoidance stuff you will need to buy the option for like $2000 or something and they install the software OTA to take full advantage of the hardware

furthermore because it's a static hardware suite they can improve it over time software wise and keep sending updates
>>
The interior is still in concept stage, you cucks. Do you really think they wouldn't have any buttons at all, even on the steering wheel? The car isn't being delivered until late 2017. They're not fucking done yet.
>>
>>14755944
>It's the same or better. You get a greener option if you can get your power from a nuclear plant or some combination of renewables as cities update.

People who buy (read: lease) a Tesla wont own it long enough for it to really have a difference. Take into account production and other expendables and the difference is pretty small.

This does not only take into account energy, but "products" in general. You might as well replace they with "green" alternatives, but it will be counteracted by more and more global consumption. Places like China and India will produce and consume more and more and it will make zero fucking difference if your car runs on freerange organic hemp, or a fucking coal steam engine.

What about a display integrated to the white band?

Like it's invisble when the car is off, but lights up and shows through the material when the car is on. Very basic, just a speedo, range and warning lights.
>>
>>14757262
it'll take much longer than that for the entire battery pack to die out
i mean, look at used priuses with "bad" battery packs, its usually like ten cells that need to be replaced and you can have a specialist do that in an afternoon for $500
>>
>>14757262

The prius is actually a really simple vehicle, the tesla is needlessly complicated. Look up the cost of repairing Roadster batteries (the only ones older enough at the moment), it's an expensive nightmare
>>
>>14757327
the mighty phillips 18650 cell, one battery to rule them all

in fact, most of the gigafactory is just a massive phillips 18650 cell production facility, only at the last step do they put them into car batteries/powerwalls
>>
>>14757336
i see your point, but worst case scenario is tesla can just buy the packs back from you and install a new one for like $5000, which covers battery pack replacement labor and the difference in cost in manufacturing a new battery. having to pay $5000 once every 15 years over the life of the car aint bad desu
>>
>>14757355
It's going to take a huge number of cars off the road, and using the superchargers kills the battery life so it will be more often than 15 years for sure

>using the superchargers kills the battery life

>>how often are people actually using those?
Anyone that needs to go further than 200 miles at a time, so probably not all that often unless you have distant family or travel for work or something
>>
>>14757394
>It's exactly the same when you fast charge a phone battery, it's the same technology
so it's an assumption based on a loose analogy?
keep in mind, distributed cells doesn't work the same as single cells in terms of charging, and supercharging mostly works using clever load balancing software and black magic shit like that, not just spraying a fire hose of electricity into a thousand thimbles
>>
>>14757407
>magic shit like that, not just spraying a fire hose of electricity into a thousand thimbles
It basically is, you're fast charging the cells by pumping more volts in there than would normally be used. It would be like filling your gas tank with a fire hose worth of pressure. It fills faster but fucks up all the seals at the same time
