About 4 months ago I bought an 87 fiero gt, and dropped a l67 swap kit from an ebay seller,it came with the full drive train, management and the parts to modify the chassis, I got it fitted, and turned the key less than a week after I bought it.
Thats not the issue. I hate the Fiero, the way it looks, and the interior specifically,a new steering rack, and adjustable suspension components and it goes from a mini boat, to a porche, so its not that big of a deal. But just generally, what the fiero is and stands for in it relationship to gm, I hate. The Fiero I had was a v6 with the 5 speed, with some go fast bits bolted on, so it was the best of what the car could offer the way it was intended. It's just garbage, I can't stand it.
This morning I was reminded of the Renault Clio Sport, quite possibly the hottest hatch to ever exist, and I found out, with the dimensions of the drivetrain, it was lighter and smaller that the 3800 that was sitting in my fiero. So, without thinking, I ordered a complete engine from the uk, and found a 87 fiero gt without an engine on craigslist in really good shape. So now, I have to fieros sitting around, this isn't even the bad part.
While I was in the junkyard looking for some parts to get the swap started, I found another fiero, this time an 86 gt, it had no trans, the paint was toast, but it had no rust. I pulled a couple of parts from it and then it happened. I saw a Corolla engine (2g-fse) with an aftermarket supercharger fitted, everything was there, came out of a rear end collision.
Long story short, In a period of 4 months I now have three Fieros, a car that I can't stand , sitting around while I torture myself, doing swaps for a car I don't even fit in comfortably.
Why does the universe hate me, praying on my lack of foresight and self control? Why Can't I stop buying Pontiac Fieros?

Well, It's almost 5 in the morning, my wife comes into my office, she just got off work, and asks me why there is another fiero in the driveway, almost crying from being confronted with my shame, I say I don't know, it just happened. After a disgruntled sigh, I hear her say, I can't take this anymore, TWO IN ONE FUCKING DAY, get rid of them, all of them, or we are through. A couple of weeks ago my buddy crashed his vr6 golf, he had it built for 12 lbs of boost, 5 days ago, he had sold the shell and most of the parts, because he had the engine built for boost, it had lower compression and made less power than it did stock na, He couldn''t get anyone to buy it so he offered it to me for 500, the transverse vr6 just slides right in. I checked craigslist really quick and found a clean silver 86 Fiero base with a blown tranny for 600.
Why does the universe want me to suffer, I dont think I can stop myself.
How much investment are we looking at if we consider transforming it into a proper sports car? I'm talking 21st century suspension, breaks, LSD, power steering, alu block, 6 speed tranny etc

Honestly no that much, the first fiero cost me about 500 after i sold the engine, and the swap kit was 750 with everything, and the suspension with coils was 1500, the second car was 600, the clio engine was 2k, the third car was 300 and the engine was 450, all in all i should be able to finish all three for less than 12gs.

An 88 shell, a base 5 speed Cobalt or L61 Ecotec Cavalier donor car, a head unit, the Grand Am based brake upgrade, and a suspension refresh will give you a car that checks all your boxes, beats the FRS at everything but drifting (lol short wheelbase and rear weight bias), and can be done for under 5 grand. A non-88 needs altered rear suspension geometry, which gets spendier
$1500 into speed parts for the L61 will get you a better p/w ratio than an E46 M3 (if you stick to the NA recipes on the Cavalier forms, boost does more but 8500 RPM NA sounds more fun to me), and should be paired with more handling upgrades, big fat sways at minimum, but I'd go for adjustable coils at that point.
Much more than 250 hp and you are gonna wish you had room for more tire.
If I ever find a clean but cheap 88, that's what I'm doing. A NA L61 making 210 hp or so, and an exhaust system so short I throw flames. Battery relocation, gut the sound insulation for the newer lighter stuff, maybe a chrome molly tube rear subframe, formula front notchy, coils, decent sway bars, those nicer seats the guy sells on Pennocks, maybe a dash kit and door card set, digital gauges, JW Speaker replacement headlamps, 10 inch slotted 3 piece rotors, 4 piston fixed calipers.
Sufficient power, sufficient braking, shave what weight I can without making it obnoxious to drive, and zip all over the place with it.

Update: THings don't seem to be getting worse, I've staved off the need to buy another fiero for now. Between me and the wife, she still won't talk to me, but its not worse. The 3800 fiero came back with her, so it still lives. It's her day off, she drove her car to the store a few minutes ago. Maybe I should sugest she gets rid of her shitbox?

Tell your wife this is the plan and you're just flipping the other two fieros for fun and funds.. then make your fav fiero the one of your dreams with the majority of said funds..
