This is mine, arrived wednesday, and it's my company car.

I didn't expected nothing on "power" side, I know it uses the prius powertrain, but actually I feel the car goes well and when in sport mode the engine kicks instantly in. Very nice to drive around.

I bought this 1990 mr2 gt for $3500 last June. It's been my dd any day without snow on the ground since then. Besides a couple gaskets and a thermostat I haven't put any money into it yet. I will be doing a full top end rebuild soon though to make sure its road trip worthy.

Working towards buying an IS300.
I'm not going to bother trying to hunt down a manual, they're all either beat to shit or "projects" when I need a DD.
I have to ask though, did autos have an LSD option? IIRC it wasn't a standard thing.
>>
>>14731815
I'm not sure about LSD coming with autos, but if you look inside the door on the VIN sticker there should be a code like "B02C". If it has a C in it then the car has an LSD, if it has an A then no LSD. They're fun cars, good luck finding a decent unmolested one anon.
>>
>>14731987
How are the autotragics on the IS300s? Been wanting the wagon, but only made available in auto in the US.
>>
>>14732521
As far as autos go, they're pretty good. If you put it in 'power' mode, it holds the lower gears longer for better acceleration, and compared to other autos, it's much easier to get it to redline. I'm pretty sure every auto version also has a fake manual setting with upshift/downshift buttons on the steering wheel.

I've driven a manual version and it is a lot more fun with a clutch, but the auto version isn't bad at all. Really just depends on if you want spend a few months hunting down a manual version for a reasonable price.

Trust me here - REPLACE THE CAPACITORS IN THE ECU ASAP!

>Caps

in the 80s some cap company released a formula which was incomplete and stolen by someone like panasonic or whoever.

Basically 100 bil caps were made or something ridiculous and caused a capacitor epidemic in electronics from 85-96 or so.

The caps are all basically used/gone now.
New cars from japan wont have this issue.

The issue EVERY lexus and toyota faces from 91-98 is the capacitors erode, leak, and fuck shit up.

Your car might idle low or high, you may have a lack of power, your gears may not work, your airconditioner may not work - and so on.

Replace caps in main ECU before doing electrical work on this vehicle.

Trust me.

Costs 30 cents for caps.
Takes 1-2 hours in total (so that's like $120 labor).

Do it.

>>
>>14735689
>>14735679

People spend thousands on the car - then realize it was the ECU caps all along.
Fix ECU first - even before it breaks.

Do it ASAP.

MODELS/ENGINES AFFECTED:

This issue affects all Lexus & Toyota models with the following engines: 1JZ, 2JZ, 1KZ, 1UZ, 5E, 1G, 3S

The following are some of the models affected:

● Lexus LS400 - 1990-2000 (in 1997 and earlier models, the problem is extremely common)
● Lexus SC300 - 1993-2000
● Lexus SC400 - 1992-2000
● Lexus GS300 - 1993-1996

● Toyota Celica GT - 1985 -1998
● Toyota Supra Mark III (JDM) - 1986-1993
● Toyota Supra GT - 1995-1997
● Toyota Supra Mark IV - 1993-2002
● Toyota Supra Twin Turbo - 1993-2002
● Toyota MR2 - 1990-1999
● Toyota Camry - 1987-2001
● Toyota Soarer - 1992-2000
● Toyota Aristo - 1993-1996

adding to this:

You may think the car is perfectly fine right now, but the ECU most likely is already fucked.

Replace caps - gain another 50 horsepower or more.

MY caps were ruined.
Car would idle from 1000-2500rpm over and over by itself.

2nd gear also wasnt working properly (auto).

Airconditioning not working.

Other strange electrical issues not worth mentioning.

All fixed with ecu repair (cap replacement).

Car is back to 6.5 seconds to 60mph.

Was doing it in 9.

Old fellas will say "oh it's a 20 year old car, course it's gonna lose power".

That's true to an extent - however - you will only lose 20bhp or so over 20 years.
The BIGGEST cause of losing bhp - is a faulty ECU with fucked caps, which can't charge circuits properly and thus can't adjust fuel/air ratios and timing - and so on.

:D

>>
Where are you guys getting your capacitors switched? I want to do this to my SC and am afraid to mess with the ecu myself.

I have always had electrical problems.
>>
I had all kinds of gremlins with my IS300 when I first got it. Eventually learned it was a loose cable in the ECU. Once loos cable was causing half a dozen different CEL codes. Fucked with my brain but it's been 100% since.

Get the caps done at any TV/computer repair place.

Anyone with BASIC knowledge of electronic repairs will do it easily.

You clip off old caps, put new ones on and solder it.

You clean board and inspect traces.
Repair traces with wire or trace glue.

Very easy.

Will be under $200 USA dollars in total.
Most likely around 2 hours labour.

I suggest you people - ALL of you people with 20+ year old cars, have your caps replaced.

Preventative maintenance.

www.soarercentral.com
>>
>IMPORTANT: It is critical that you use the exact premium Japanese low ESR capacitors I have linked above, even if you are having someone else do the work.
The correct capacitors are very rare type and they will not have them locally - if they use other capacitors, the repair will not solve the problems you are having!
