Hey I work for Ford, but since I can't get a falcon here. Without importing a classic over, yet my love for australian cars, I'm looking at them too.

My friend had the last year they made them, until he traded it for a street bike and a smoker dirt bike. It was a nice car, no trunk space though. Weird.

Well since this went straight to ausfagging, I'll tell you what I know.

Decent interior, LS1/LS2 is gud. 4L60 is mediocre, manual would be better. LSD's kinda shit themselves, but maybe that's just people using the wrong diff fluid without whatever weird friction modifier. They kill rubber strut mount bushings like the G8's. They're a bit heavy and a bit bland, but it's one of the best horsepower per dollar bargains out there right now. I'd absolutely consider buying one if I didn't already have a comfy rwd V8.

The rest of what you talked about is true.

Gearbox is unkillable but a little slushy, much better with a tune

Engine is godly, do you guys mafless tune ls1/ls2s in the states or?

Front suspension will shit itself over time but as you said its only bushes which is very common for older heavier cars.

Rear end in mine is tight as fuck only needed new shocks BUT on the downside the VT-VY do have a fuck load of inside camber wear on the rear tyres especially if you lower it or get a grippy/wide tyre.

Fronts have the opposite problem with outside camber where even at stock/sports ride height the car goes up on its toes and squats at the back under heavy cornering and acceleration
I dont agree that they are 'bland' cars maybe for you yanks but with some tasteful basic modifications they are fun.

Maybe I'm crossing over from first gen CTSV's or something. Or it could be that people changed their diff fluid for new stuff that needed additives like a friction modifier for the LSD to work. All the G8 people recommend getting the GM spec'd diff fluid.

4L60 is killable once you start adding some power. I assume 4L80 swaps are common though, and they should hold up. Or just buy a manual.

Typically 400hp coupes at low prices in the US are a lot more aggressive looking than the Monaros/GTOs were. I'm down with the understated look, but a lot of dipshits will call them ugly.

I have one OP.

I will say parts are a bit harder to find compared to a Camaro or Corvette. It may be slightly heavy, but the interior is much better than anything else GM had at the time.

I have a 4L60, I'd stay away from it if you want to build it because it's the weakest link by far. 2005/6 Got the 4L65 which is much stronger.

The diff is fine, I've never had any problems with it.

The looks are fine to me, I prefer my cars understated.

The Pontiac GTO did not come out until 2005, the CV8 Monaro was in production back in 2002, in 2004 they released the VY HSV GTO (the one in that picture) and then in 2005 they released the 6 litre version (VZ the one with a 6 litre), the same year the new 6 litre Monaro was being sold as a GTO in America.

They made thousands of Monaros, they made less than 500 GTO's of each type.

Both the Pontiac and HSV Coupe versions of the GTO came out in 2004, with the same drivetrain options (both 260kW/350hp). Then in 2005 with the release of the 6.0 LS2, both the Pontiac and HSV Coupe versions of the GTO upgraded to the 297kW/400hp drivetrain.

The CV8 was a sub-par cookie cutter variant, regardless of arbitrary release numbers numbnuts.

If you don't mind the styling,

04 gtos are cheap for the power, but

Brakes are junk, problem fixed in the 05 and 06
Rear spring sag, known problem. Have to order springs from straya. Peddlers is one supplier.

Bushings in these car go bad fast. Rear camber cannot be adjusted without aftermarket parts, so if the bushes go bad there go the inside of your rear tires.

The posi units tend to burn up fast as mentioned.

4l60 is kill. 20mpg max. But still faster in a straight line than a 6spd.

But overall I say the ls1 is the better buy. Head and or cam swap negates the extra power of the ls2 for far less money. And all the newer parts swap over.
