You'll want to put a hugger or something between the rear tire and the air cleaners. Those pods will gladly pass everything the tire pics up right into the cylinder. (it will crap that swingarm, too.)

And yes, you need rear-sets. And save up to upgrade those PS shocks to... Anything, really. Stock were better. Get IKON if you can afford it.

Nice bike, hipster. Be sure to spend more on your outfit than the bike cost and you are ready for Echo Park.

Just retake it faggot, you have to pay a small fee and you only have to show up for the skills test, not the whole thing. I recommend asking to show up for the whole day if possible for the extra practice. They'll let you if they have drop outs or open spaces in the class.

I literally could not do the cone weave on the repsol 250 they put me on, shit was squirrely as fuck at slow speeds, also the friction zone was insanely tiny.

Just bought a '99 DR350 with the intention of riding it down to South America. How did I do?

Needs a carb rebuild. Already has big plastic tank. Figure I need soft luggage, some sort of rack, and road-biased tires. Needs a new chain/sprocket so might go up a tooth.

replace all fluids, brake pads, cables and wheel bearings to save headaches later on.
pop the inspection ports and look inside for any obvious signs of damage and check your valves while its open.
if all that is good and done, you should be ready to load up and go

What's worth carrying as far as parts? Figure I might as well bring a complete gasket kit in case I need it. Rings too. That, tubes, and spokes I'm not sure.

Instead of a rack I'm hoping these - http://www.moskomoto.com/collections/moto-camping-luggage/products/reckless-80l - become available again before I take off in the summer. Would construct stand-offs, but otherwise seems like a much lighter solution.

Also, is 'sea foaming' the engine to remove carbon useful or pure placebo?

My friend coming with will have a KLR650, and he and others have tried to talk me into that, but I'm only ~150 pounds and always travel light, so seemed like over huge overkill. Also DR650 are rare and expensive (really like the idea of air cooled simplicity). Did a motorcycle tour around Southeast Asia last year on a 100cc, which really taught me the virtue of a lighter bike in shitty terrain/roads (also that you can go anywhere on anything if you take your time).

instead of a kit just bring a tube of sealant

A 350 is fine for South America, assuming you're actually going to adventure, ride back roads and dirt tracks and not just blast along highways.
>>
>>14680412
I'd put it on there just to be safe for such a long trip but in the end it's up to you. Since you're going with friends just bring a cable or strap to bumb start and that should be fine too.
>>
>>14680422
My buddy with the KLR tells me he uses liquid gasket stuff. Dunno if that lasts.
>>
>>14680409
I appreciate how you're new to riding and everything but I fail to see how you can even make a 90 degree turn safely. It isn't even how you're afraid to lean, that's fine - your technique is just completely wrong.

please go watch TotW a couple more times and practice countersteering in a lot before you go out on the roads friend - you're gonna get rear ended going so slow.
>>
>>14680389
like the other anon said, check adv rider.
bring all the difficult to get small parts, a coupel im following on their RTW trip routed new cables alongside the current ones to make things easy if one breaks.
i pack heavy on my trips but bring all the tools you need to do tires, chain replacement/repair, liquid gasket and of course the the diy fix materials, bailing wire, zipties, tape and rope

Just clutch cable, or brake lines too?

I'm a pretty hardened traveler (but pretty new to motorcycles), but my friend coming with I'm not sure how far he'll make it, so I might end up solo. The trip in Asia maybe spoiled me, since there's a mechanic every 200 feet there. Need to figure out what I need in terms of parts / tools, but really want to do this as light as possible (hence 350 vs. usual 650, although I think people do this on 250s all the time).
>>
>>14680443

I watched the 'Mondo Enduro' movies which they did on DR350s. They basically has no idea what they were doing: massively overpacked (the first time) and brought no spares, but somehow they made it around the world twice. They had had a piston built from scratch for them at some mining camp in Siberia. Scrounged wheels bearings also in the middle of nowhere Russia.

Main lesson from those movies (a la shoestring light-weight RTW riding) is that it's injuries and running out of money that will stop you, not the bike.

why do riders not keep going straight on a section of track like this? up ahead is another right turn, so why do they make that s shape on the straight?

it's going to be very expensive for a bike that people say is underwhelming (do your own research, i'm not informed on this at all). beginner bikes are typically owned for a year or (more likely) much less, and have a tendency to be dropped. all this will hurt your resale when you upgrade.

Rossi started in 7th place and rode up to 5th. Then he wasn't able to pass anyone for the rest of the race. Both ducatis were in lead until they battled each other and Iaonne fell, Rossi now in 4th.

Marquez fought really hard, took some risk and overtook Dovizioso couple of times but landed 3rd in the end. Ducati had the advantage of higher top speed at the long start/finish straight

Lorenzo took the cake away, even though Ducati had the advantage of top speed he even made some distance through the corners and finished first.

Marquez and Rossi both had the hard/med tire combo iirc but Marquez took a lot more risk and started in front of rossi. Lorenzo & Dovizioso (1st / 2nd) had the soft/soft combo.

Also the top 4 (Lorenzo, Dovizioso, Marquez, Rossi) left the rest of the riders completly behind. Doesn't mean rossi sucks, maybe just wrong tire choice. I hope he makes a comeback as the ubergod.
