The original paint on my NA is in pretty rough shape. Full of swirls, oxidation, a lot of orange peel from some shitty body work, etc. Also have some new parts that need to be painted. Would I be better off having my paint corrected, and the new parts painted to match, or should I just get the whole car wrapped another color? Local shop who does really high quality wraps quoted me around $2,000 with jambs. Unsure how much the paint work would cost though.

I'd take a 2.5 swapped NC as well

>stock 2.5 is 170-180 whp/wtq
>exh/header pushes these number to 200+ whp/wtq with a tune

sounds like fun to me. you're right about the suspension though, every NC needs shocks, springs and sway bars at minumum

if I were you I'd get a quote for the paint too and compare to the price of the wrap. Personally I don't really see the point in wrapping over bad paint

Even a cheap scuff and shoot will look better than the best possible wrap, and cost about the same, while lasting longer. Wraps look like garbage in person, don't let low quality jpgs on the internet fool you.

you can get it liquid wrapped for about $1400 which is removable and should last 4 years or more

Okay, so I know nothing about cars but I want to get into them. I currently have the option to buy a early 90's miata convertible for $200. It hasn't ran in 7 years and has sat under a tarp for a majority of the time. What do?
>>
>>14676454
I've seen wraps that this shop has done, and they're not garbage. The vinyl they use is a really high quality, and they take the time to make sure it's perfect. No visible seams or anything anywhere. You couldn't even tell that it was a wrap until you got up close.

>>14676439
I had got a quote a couple years ago just for paint correction and a respray on my hard top from one of the best shops in the area, and they told me around $1,900. 80% of the paint isn't bad, it probably just needs some correction done, but I have a feeling that the stuff that's orange peeled is going to have to be redone. Red was the last color I wanted when I was looking for a Miata, but I got such a crazy deal on this one that I couldn't pass it up. This just seems like an opportunity to finally change the color, even though it won't be permanent.

I have an NA and I like the NC, I like all the generations of the MX5, gotta pay respect to the original raw form of the MX5 in the NA, still the lightest and the most simple, the best thing about the MX5 is at its best in the NA.
>>
under what circumstances should i even consider an NA over $4000?
>>
>>14682711

If it's a special edition
If it comes with these options
1.8 engine
LSD
Power everything
If the upgrades are good quality and installed well
If the upgrades are "tastetul"
If there's literally no rust
If it's a desert car that's been garaged the whole time
If it has less than 75k miles on the engine
If it has a turbo set up that is good quality
If it has nakamae interior everything
>>
>>14682734
alright, it seems like most things on my local CL that meet that criteria are all $6k or more though, but i assume that's all older listings with idiot sellers that won't budge on their inflated prices
>>
>>14682755

Remain patient but be tenacious.

I waited 1.5 yrs for mine to pop up (patience), and I looked at classifieds, craiglist, online, etc pretty much every week in a 300 mile radius for the right one (tenacity).

If you're just popping into the classifieds once a month you're going to lose your chance.

If you're looking only in your town or just outside of town you're not going to find anything. Look in every state bordering yours, yes even if your state is xbox huge like texas.

If you've been "looking", which for most people is more like "window shopping" for 3 months, you may need to wait 5x longer.

Keep at it.
>>
>>14683703
isn't that more an indication of the market implicit agreed-upon price being higher than you think it is, and you basically just got really lucky once?
>>
>>14683726

Yes. And what shall one do? Complain on the internet? Bitch the seller out? Good luck getting the sale now.

Luck is luck and some people have it, some people don't. For those who don't they work on the problem until it's solved, in a way where a solution is possible. Researching and looking x time is a solution. Saving money is a solution. Venting is not a solution.

I'm not saying you can't do it, in face I agree with you, it's bullshit that these meme cars are hard to come by in any sort of significant quality fashion. But it is the nature of the market right now and considering alot of other factors and other cars it's better than most.
>>
>>14683726
>agreed-upon price being higher than you think it is

This is the same issue as pretty much 95% of cars out there buddy. Miata's have that issue too but it's not nearly as bad as other jap models (s2k, fd rx7, all hondas, etc)
>>
>>14683759
no i mean, it seems more like the market has moved past your price estimates and you're projecting unrealistic expectations.

honestly, if you have a set upon price for the car you want, and you go searching for that car at that price in that condition and you can't find it after six months.....you should probably increase your set-upon price.

buy yeah you could wait years on a magical deal instead i guess, although i think you saved like $1500 at most

Split my wheels today and test fit the 1" wider lips. Just have to clean all the old silicone off, put all the bolts in and torque them, then reseal them and I'll hopefully be ready for tires. Can't want to finally drive this thing again.
>>
>>14683790

I'm cheap, that's true, and you should be too, a bit of thriftyness keeps you sharp. But more than that I needed the right model. Little to no rust, less than 100k miles on an original engine, sensible mods, still fairly stock. That combination can be hard to come by in miatas. And if you find that combination you'll have a hard time finding it at the right price. I had a daily and did not need to be swayed so heavily by market trends. Many don't have that patience. As long as they're happy then great. I'm just giving anon my perspective, which is be patient and tenacious.

Believe me, you feel like I'm too particular, and I know I am. I'd rather have a solid base that fits my needs versus trying wrestle with someone else's project car. Some people are fine with that and they get in the driver's seat of a miata within 3 months. I know I'm at the tail end of the extreme. But if you're anything like me then that's what worked for me. Patience and tenacity. Different strokes for different folks.

>>

I might use it as a daily drive, alongside a Fiesta ST, but more for a weekend/holiday car desu. What are the maintenance costs on an NC? Are parts cheap and easy to replace?

Probably won't have to do major work on it, seeing as it's more or less new.

My other option is to wait for a hardtop ND, but how long would that take? :s
>>
>>14676479
Is this a question? Buy it already, for $200 it's a fucking steal even if it had literally no drivetrain. If it's still got the motor and everything then even better. You get to learn how to rebuild an engine :^) should cost about $600 for a full rebuild kit, assuming the head and block aren't fucked.
>>

there is benefit of having larger injectors but that's only if your stock injectors can't keep up with how much air is coming in.
if you did a bunch of mods to increase the amount of air coming into the engine and your stock injectors are causing your air fuel ratio to become too lean, then yeah it's a good idea to upgrade. otherwise don't bother

>tfw my NA6 has started acting finicky with cooling again

>replaced all hoses
>replaced water inlet pipe (has a gaping hole in it)
>ran fans in parallel
>replaced cursed hose end cap on back of engine
>replaced thermostat
>flushed coolant until clean

Did that back in January and got her running good again. Since then I have been able to hoon on hot days (southern fag here) with no issues except for the occasional slight rise.

Today I was driving about 45mph at 2kRPM and the needle got all the way to the maximum, pulled over, killed the engine. No leaks, levels good, etc. Took it home and really beat the engine, temperature needle barely moved, then as I pulled home it raised up to the 1o'clock position and stayed there even while idle. Shut it down and there was a shitton of bubbling coming from the engine bay.

Let it cool, took the cap off, no standing coolant in my radiator, yet the overflow reservoir was almost full? I thought it was an air bubble or something but it seems it's depositing coolant into the reservoir and not sucking it back when needed? Anybody have any experience with this? I already replaced the cap with one from Autozone, though I just noticed the cap I put in is rated for 0.9 BAR while the stock cap was 1.3 BAR, could that create issues?
>>
>>14688629

yeah you need to get the car up to operating temperature and give it the beans, really rev it. the thermostat needs to open too, the radiator fan should come on. it also helps to use pic related. I'd find a guide on YouTube but I'm on mobile, they're on there though
>>
>>14688793
Your cap is too low. The preasure created in the cooling system raises the boiling point of the water. You went to a lower cap, so now you have a lower boiling point. Replace the cap with a proper OEM radiator cap, and your issues should go away.

If they persist, check your oil and fill tube for water or mustard looking junk. This would indicate a leaking headgasket.

what about with the top down? Is it as loud as wind noise across a motorcycle helmet?

>>14692018
That doesn't give me any idea.
>>
>>14692390

I won't lie. It's pretty loud. At anything approaching highway speeds you definitely have to half yell to talk to a passenger.

Factors that WILL make top down noise:

Suspension: I have aggressive springs/shocks = more sound
Tires: I have performance rubber = more sound
Rollbar: Got one = bit more sound
Windblocker: they range from meh to great. I have none. Factory one is good.
Engine: Any power mods will make it noisier. Mine's stock.
Forced induction: Turbos can be noisy. Mine's na
Exhaust: Modded ones usually get louder, like mine.

So a stock miata with old man tires and windblocker will be very tolerable. But start to throw in mods and they can become very loud cars. I don't mind the noise, since the stereo works fine.
>>
>>14692419

This info pertains to top down driving btw.

However for top up driving, everything still applies though to a lesser degree.

Same factors apply with the hardtop, however it will be quieter than a soft top.

Thanks
>>
>>14691289
It's nice mate. build it as you like it, fuck what all these busriders are saying about your wheels being slightly heavier
>>
>>14692437

You'll also hear a bit of noise naturally from your clutch, your transmission, any aero mods (spoilers, lips, canards, etc,) motor mounts, and brake pads. Pretty much any upgrade of these will add noise. If you're upgrading any of these you're generally okay with the added noise.

You also need to factor in the interior. Many strip the carpet out, or add fixed back seats and race harnesses, which can add to noise, partly due to increased vibration since carbon fiber, fiberglass, steel, or aluminum transmits noise and vibration better than the stock foam padded seats.

There is sound deadening material that can cut down on significant road noise, esp with the top down. It's not that expensive but does add a tiny bit of weight and most owners take issue with that and don't mind the noise. Like any of these mods its up to you.

For freeway speeds top down driving, sound deadening won't be as big of a factor as a good windblocker and old man commuter wheels.

Lastly, most miata's a 5 speed which means going 80mph means the engine is roaring at 4k rpm. This is fairly noisy. There are 6 speed miatas, and will be quieter than 5 speed ones when highway cruising, how much so I'm not sure since I've never been in one.

Good info. One thing to note is that girls who ride in miatas, like if their boyfriend bought one or whatever, those who hate it, say noise is one of the main factors. The others are harsh twitchy ride feel, no space, and "doesn't feel safe." We don't want to associate with that trash anyway, racers don't need girlfriends.jpg

They could easily put in lower compression Pistons in the 2.0 version. Everything else flows well and the way they have made it work with high compression in NA can be carried over for turbo meaning we get higher compression then normal or high amounts of boost. Can guarantee that if it is turbo it will be responsive as hell.

its starting to get super hard/rough to shift gears in my NA. 2nd gear is especially rough. I have changed the gear oil, shifter oil, diff oil, in hopes of achieving smooth shifting. Nothing has done much, the shfiter oil did more than anything else. I read somewhere that if the synchros were worn out, double-clutching would help. Started double clutching and it didn't help.

So some shitty shit just happened. one of the side latches on my NA hardtop refuses to lock in place. The locking button is fine I think, but the actual bar that latches onto the handle on the car itself just pops out once I tighten it more than halfway. I tried adjusting it because I thought I had too much pressure, but it made no difference. It either popped out faster, or didn't latch securely. What do?
Pic isn't my latch but it illustrates the issue I guess
>>
>>14701826
i'm actually much more interested in an NC1 due to the less silly front end, what does the NC2 have over it?
>>
>>14701832
you could take a round file and file the hook part so the latch can get a better purchase on it
>>
>>14701856
I ain't judging.

The NC2 has stronger engine parts, different look, minor interior differences. Due to the stronger pistons, it's more supercharger friendly. Unless you want to buy your own internals and stuff. Do what you like.
>>
>>14701887
Yeah, I though about that, but I think maybe the actual latch has something I can fix. It has about 3mm of play once the latch is down, and that lets it pop out. I'm thinking of filing it as a last resort, since the paint on the latches and everything else is perfect. Would putting a couple of washers on the back of the bracket that's screwed into the car to push it forward a bit work?
>>
>>14701900
there are writeups about latch adjustment on the miata.net garage. I suggest doing some research, I don't even have side latches so I don't really know. I just have mine hard mounted

So, it was pissing down and blowing 80mph gusts last night, had the cover on and a 50lb weight on front/back to hold it down, along with the clasps under the body.

I had a puddle in my car's footwell maybe 3 or 4 months ago that I sucked "dry" with the shop vac. a couple weeks after that it became my parts car, so it got stashed in the garage.

a couple of weeks ago I ripped the carpet out of the car because a guy wanted to buy it and the foam under the carpet was still pretty damp.... it has been in my garage for the past 4 months just sitting there and it still wasn't dry. smelled like a wet shoe. so yeah.
>>
>>14701971
Well it's still summer here so it's gonna get dry in the next couple days. Hot enough to warp plastic in the heat.

There isa long nut on a threaded shaft built into each latch assembly for adjusting the engagement point and tension of the latch against the striker plate. The striker plate also has room for play and can also be adjusted with a torx bit if need be.

People that don't own these cars really underestimate the rigidity added by a properly tightened hardtop, there's a noticeable difference when I take mine off and I have a harddog to boot.

NC has the 2.0 MZR, ND has the 2.0 SKYACTIV-G.

MZR
>Port injected
>takes premium gas
>gets 22 city 28 hwy mph
>167 hp 140 lb ft

SKYACTIV-G
>Direct injected
>doesn't take premium
>gets 27 city 36 hwy
>155 hp 148 lb ft

note: with the 91 octane tune kit (~600 from goodwinracing) the SKYACTIV-G will make 175-179 crank hp

also another thing is the ND actually accelerates faster with less hp because of its better torque curve and lower curb weight

most of the nb's safety is in the much better gen 2 airbags, swap those into your na

Any foray into retro/vintage is incredible looking in my book, whether it's a little or the whole way, like the above NA. Nb's can pull it off too. Some say less, but they're all still killer.

i feel like it'd be hard to do retro with those very 90s looking headlights and front end on the NB

but the na is simple enough that it can be cast in different eras (except the 80s)
>>
>>14706628

I agree, but I'm not so purist to say that 90's fixed headlights mean any part of the look is out of bounds for NBs. A counterpoint: the NB curves are more evocative of etypes and other vintage curvy cars which I think helps going vintage. This is an extreme example but if you focus on just the hips it becomes more apparent.

hmm, i can see where you're coming from

Again I get where your coming from definitely. Many vintage look miata owners and fans see vintage look NBs with a bit of distaste, or even disgust. I understand they may get anything near the ubiquitous fanfare that retro NAs get, but I think the pool is big enough for both models.

Motegi wheels i cant rememer the model atm? 15x7.5in 40 offset i think?

The tires are BFG G-force rivals and they're sweet.

Wow that looks shitty, and I have a general hardon for fastbacks, but it has too much bulge and those taillights look horrible

Any one check in on this? What's your top speed in first gear?

The reason I ask is mine in first gear feels like the power drops off after 4-5k, and it struggles to get to 30. It revs to 7 fine but power is down. 2, 3, and other gears are much better.

Clogged air filter? Clutch?

>feels like the power drops off after 4-5k

if thats the only symptom it really could be so many things
>clutch
>coilpack
>head gasket
>fucky spark plugs
>dirty MAF (but that would be noticeable everywhere in rev range)
>dead or dying TPS
>the ecu could be pulling timing because your knocking

does it throw any codes?
>>
>>14709701
oh well if its in first only then its probably your clutch

for $200 he can learn to disassemble an entire a miata, and get a hardtop out of it at the same time.

It just looks mossy, surface rust can be taken away and the chassis can be repainted once stripped, assuming the rockers aren't rusted.

We can't tell anything else from here, but for $200 there has to be SOMETHING he can learn from it.

The only sticker I have is an SCCA one on the driver A pillar.

Wheels are 6UL's with BFG rivals.

Finally saw one in person, it looks a lot less down syndrome in person but I still wouldn't buy it without a hardtop, RF or some potential cheaper factory hardtop (unlike my NB the convertible look kills it).

Ass is the most beautiful I've seen on any car though.
