You pull the thing out, there are 3 plastic clips that keep the thing in place (purple circles).
Then you push it back in when you are done.

Those fuckers are very fragile though, so be careful (or just buy new ones, they probably cost $5 for 20 of them)

Heavily used (~180k miles) 04 Crown Vic LX I bought as a beater. Weird vibration at idle, feels kinda like driving over unfinished concrete or a rumble strip. Noticeable while in motion as well. No obvious power loss, no obvious leaks, started seemingly out of the blue (after the car had sat for about a month and a AAA batter replacement.). Thoughts?

Ok what the hell is going on

My driver side low beam and right side high beam are not working.

Bulbs seem ok, even tried replacing the one on the left side, no change.

Also fuses replaced.

Engine troubleshooting question :
I have a 98 crv and when I turn the cabin/climate control temp knob to cool, the engine temperature begins to climb and goes to about 3/4 hot. As soon as I turn the knob back to heat, the engine temp falls immediately to the normal temperature. Engine temp does not fluctuate when driving, only changes when I adjust cabin temp. This happens regardless if the cabin air fan is on or off. Coolant reservoir is filled to recommended level, radiator fan kicks on and off as normal.

Where do I begin?

Went to a dealer to test drive a 2008 Chevy Colorado with the 3.7L I5 and it looked okay, trans fluid looked a bit old but whatever. But when I went to start the thing it started chugging. Really rough idle, the whole truck was shaking and there was zero power; throttle did absolutely nothing. I had to push the thing back into its parking spot after the salesman pulled it out of park and it rolled down a slope.

What could this be? The truck only had 100k mi, and I thought the transmissions were weak, not the engines. I read it might be a sensor problem, but would a bad sensor really disable the whole fucking truck? That seems really retarded.

Also any recommendations on proceeding here? I'm still interested if I can get the price low enough. I'm pretty much going to go in and tell them that I want the truck, but with $1000 and the cost of an engine replacement knocked off (comes out to ~60% asking price). I'm still going to check the codes with an OBD reader and get a buyer's inspection just to be sure though.

So I was turning right into a single lane, during an active dedicated green arrow for the other cars to turn left into this same lane.
Was it illegal for me to have gone when I did, in between the left turning cars?

I fit in just fine, but a passenger who I challenge the expertise of claims it was illegal. Albeit it would have been obviously safer to have just waited for the dedicated turners to have finished their queue before I did. How I see it, was a late merge zipper technique.
I figure that the dedicated turning lane light gives them the immediate right of way, but if I saw an opening I'm fine to take it.

I'm in Kentucky.

You can hunt for workshop manuals of a manufacturer of your choice.
They have a lot of technical documentation and somewhat detailed explanations of the inner workings of pretty much everything in a car.

Granted, it's not an engineering manual, so actual math and formulas are almost nowhere to be seen (it's a manual meant for mechanics after all), but it does a great job at giving you a good idea of how stuff works.

If you look for raw data (engine specs, tolerances, electrical stuff, etc), then workshop manuals are the Bible.

Unfortunately pretty much every manufacturer has their manuals online and they require login credentials that you can't possibly have. If you are ok with settling with something not so recent, then you can search for manuals up to '05/'06, which is roughly the year when most manuals went from CDs to websites, you can find torrents for those pretty easily.

You also need to look for whatever acronym they came up with to call their manuals. Ford, for example, calls their manuals TIS (e-TIS for the online version, which is the only one that I know of that accepts money for a limited time access to the manual, it not cheap, but give it a look), Volvo calls it VADIS, GM calls it TIS again and VW had a different name that I don't remember right now.

Everything you find in those manuals is copyrighted material, so keep that in mind if you want to use them for your degree (I don't think anyone will ever come after you, but still...).

Grinding when shifting, even when doing everything correctly. It means you fucked your synchros
>>
>>14678823
>Grinding when shifting
Fuck, how long do i have before it fails? I'm doing everything correctly now, but I think i might have fucked it up a little trying to learn how to use it.
>>
>>14678838
it already failed, your iust fucking up the gears now too. get it repaired or learn to rev match.
>>
>>14678846
How long would it take to actually completely fuck the transmission up and make it unusable? I've only had the car for two weeks, bought it used. I spent a week just learning how to drive stick shift, is a week all it takes to fuck up a transmission if you don't know how to use it?
>>
>>14678838
It depends on how severe the grinding is and how often you grind.
It's not good, every grind will spill a tiny bit of metal shavings in your oil and those will circulate all around the gearbox, ruining it over time.

It's not that big of a deal, you won't destroy your gearbox in one month unless you have fucked literally every synchro you have. If it's just a single gear, then you can live with it and hope it lasts a few years or be a sensible person and have your synchro replaced now instead of waiting for a catastrophic failure down the road.
Or get a second gearbox from a scrapyard and hope it is in good condition
>>
>>14678867
What kind of stupid question is that? It depends on how you fucking use it
>>
>>14678867
i dont know how often it grinds, it might have been damaged before, and i also dont know what car were talking about. if you keep grinding the gear they will wear out sooner or later and slip. you will also have metalo shavings in your trans. if it only grinds in one gear try to skip that gear. what i did was make myself a chart that i put on my dashboard to know when i could shift, depending on engine speed. it makes revv matching easier.
>>
>>14678878
Are the lower gears, gears 1,2,3 easier to replace than say gear 4, and 5? Can a replacement be done myself or should I just take it to a mechanic?
>>
>>14678890
>if it only grinds in one gear try to skip that gear
So is the process of "skipping a gear" called rev matching? I keep hearing that word but I don't really understand how to rev match.
>>
>>14678908
na, my 2nd gear was grinding, so i didnt use it anymore. Your aim would be to hit or come close to the RPM's that the car would be at, at your current speed, in the lower gear, if you want to rev match when downshifting for example.
>>
>>14678899
You don't need to replace the gears, you just need to replace the synchros.
However, 5th gear in a 5-speed transverse trans is usually outside of the main gearbox housing and covered just by a thin metal cover (pic related, it's the part on the left at the end of the trans) so it's the only one you can remove without physically opening everything.

But since you need to replace synchros, and I doubt you managed to fuck the 5th one only, you need to take the trans apart.

And no, manual trans are an absolute nightmare of springs, tiny metal spheres, shafts that need to be installed in a precise order and orientation and a fuckload of bolts, nuts and washers. You can maybe remove the trans from your car and bring it to a mechanic if you don't want to pay him for extra labor.
>>
>>14678931
so replacing gears 1,2 and 3 are harder than replacing 4 and 5?
>>
>>14678997
No, replacing gear 1, 2, 3 and 4 is harder than 5 IF your trans is one of those that has an external 5th gear, otherwise they are equally complicated.
And by complicated I mean impossible if you have never even looked at a trans from up close

How bad am I going to fuck a manual transmission up learning to use it? Like is is just something I'll be able repair in an afternoon with a few parts or will it be a long expensive procedure?
>>
>>14679567

worst youre probably gonna do is burn the clutch a bit, you have to fuckup hard and be an idiot to do significant permanent damage. i learned on a 1988 Honda Prelude and a 1979 Toyota Supra years ago and both survived stalling/launches without damage, bought my girlfriend a 1998 Civic to learn stick on too and its survived her stalling it and dumping the clutch a few times
>>
Is it normal to have a few drops of leakage from the oil filter and plug?
>>
>>14679567
Every damage to the transmission is both painful, long and expensive to repair, especially if you don't repair it yourself.

Best case: you fuck up the clutch.
Either you break the springs on the clutch plate or on the double flywheel (if your engine has one) with all the stalling or you burn the friction material.
Clutch packs are relatively expensive, but are somewhat easy to replace. Pulling a gearbox is not an easy task and you need two people to do it safely if you don't have a lift and all the tools needed, but even first timers can do it if they are careful.

Worst case: do what >>14678838 did and fuck up synchros.
So now, on top of having to pull the transmission, you have to open it up and fix it, this can't be done without very detailed instructions, a few specific tools, a lot of patience and, most of all, some previous experience.
If you can afford to risk your trans or you have a spare one already, then by all means go ahead, look for instructions and crack that bitch open. Fixing manual trannies can be rewarding when done right and it will save you a ton of money, but don't even try it if you can't afford to lose your gearbox because of lost springs, bent rods, missing spheres, washers installed with the wrong side up or parts installed in the wrong order.
In this case parts are usually cheap and small, but the job costs a ton in labor.
>>
>>14680694
Well I have a second person, a backup car, and I'll have plenty of free time in the summer so I'll probably go to a junkyard and pull a tranny and play around with it. Thanks for the detailed response.

Get yourself a workshop manual or some instructions because I guarantee you that you will fuck up the order with which you need to remove stuff, and once something is lost/broken/fucked up, it's a lot harder to finish the job, which means it's impossible if it's your first time opening a gearbox.
Especially if you plan on playing with it during several days, the chance of forgetting what goes where is very high, so be prepared.

Get yourself pic related too and an hammer, you are going to need those a lot when taking the rods and forks apart. Also small magnet will make your life less miserable when you need to pick up the millions of metal spheres you are going to find.

Good luck

not really. Old cars will, but it's one of the most preventable ways to stop oil leakage

>tighten oil filter with a wrench if necessary
>when installing new oil filter, take a little bit of new oil and prime the o-ring so it isn't dry

>tighten oil pan bolt, BUT NOT TOO MUCH
>10-15 lb/ft is enough
>make sure your vehicle wasn't designed to use a crush washer or a reuseable plastic washer
>make sure the idiots at quick lube didn't use a impact wrench on your pan bolt and over-tighten it enough to break the pan
most important: make sure it's actually your plug and oil filter that are leaking, and that it's not dripping down from higher up on the engine and collecting on those parts

So I've been looking at z32's lately and I found a 95 TT listed for 8k at 70k miles four hours away from me. It's pretty clean for that low of a price so I inquired about it Saturday. The dealer told me that its in the shop for the clutch and that he would keep me posted. I call again today and he tells me that the reason they brought it to their mechanic was because of a grinding feeling/noise occasionally when you turn right.

Carfax/autocheck came out clean. My googlefu has lead me to believe that something is wrong with either its CV joints or wheel bearings. The salesman said he would lower the price to 7500 as-is but he said he would put it up for dealers auction within the next two weeks if it doesn't sell. I'm not much of a wrencher and I know these cars have a reputation of being a PITA to work on but I could take it to a mechanic no problem. Should I pursue in buying it still?

A/C compressor is bad or partially seized. When you select A/C or turn to cool, the A/C compressor becomes linked to the pulley which is driven by the belt, when A/C is off the pulley is allowed to turn freely without having to use work to turn the compressor. Therefore when you use the compressor the engine must work harder and hotter to turn the bad A/C compressor

can someone explain to me how tow/haul ratings differ between, say, and f150 and f250, when they have the exact same engine?
>>
>>14671500
I NEED HELP REALLY BADLY.
I was adjusting my valves to make my M20 ticking go away; as I was finishing up I forgot to take the ratchet from the crank nut and tried to start the car and put a giant hole in my radiator which I'm not concerned about because its only $100. The motor ticked way harder than before (maybe a rod knock im not sure), but I need to know if I just adjusted the valves wrong or if the force of the ratchet to the radiator might've broken something internally.
>>
>>14688024
It comes down to how the chassis/frame is made. Some trucks have more reinforcements that allow them to tow more than a smaller truck with the same engine.
>>
>>14688078
I find it unlikely that a ratchet could destroy the internals of the engine. Assuming it wasn't dislodged by the impact with the radiator, the socket would break way before anything in the engine.
So you probably fucked the valve adjustment.
>>
Working on changing the oil on my v3 supercharger, stuck the Allen wrench into the brass fill plug, felt tighter than last time so I put a little extra pressure on it and completely stripped it.

What are my options? I don't think I've ever felt this bad about working on something
>>
Can Nengun be trusted for buying parts?
>>
>>14688024
Bigger frame, more and harder leaf Springs, different axle set up, bigger brakes, better cooling, potentially dual rear wheels, etc. The difference between a 250 and a 350 is even more leaf Springs in the rear.

Is remapping risky? Is it worth it?

I've got a 2.5 TDI V6 Audi, which is a shit engine and very unreliable. A remap could take it from 180bhp to 208bhp.

Would I be pushing my luck? It's got a warrantied fuel pump on it (because that already failed) so I'm considering taking my chances.

Realistically, how long can a totally standard road car take being driven in track like conditions?

Quite often I drive my car quite hard for upwards of an hour, sometimes more. I never really thought about it damaging stuff since temps all stay in check, only obvious signs it struggles is the brakes fading a lot.

Are you meant to pull over every while to give components a chance to cool?

The castle nut on the control arm balljoint is stuck as fuck. (97 Camry)

It is only accessible by an open-end wrench.

I have heated it with a MAP torch for like 20 minutes. Soaked it in PB Blaster. Smacked the steering knuckle around.

I still can't even see a difference in the threading on the ball joint stud and the nut. I can't even see a line where the nut touches the steering knuckle. It's like a solid piece of metal.

What recourse is there now? I don't have an impact gun but, even if I had one, you can't get a socket on the nut.

this is a pic of someone else's car

the metal band above it is an axle/bearing dust shield that i don't see how to remove without breaking

you can unbolt it from the control arm but that doesn't mean much

like i said, i don't see what can be done aside from an open-ended wrench

Closest pic I can find on Google.
Basically you remove the driveshaft and put the hub back together so it is more stable.

Connecting the top part back is optional as you may be more comfortable in keeping the whole thing slightly bent outward to reach the nut better

I don't have the money for two full sets of sockets right now and I'd rather stick with my 3/8" drive standard for now. So unless someone can show me a 16" 3/8" breaker bar for under like $30.

Husky or Craftsman tools?

I was planning on getting some sockets and odds and ends from Sears but my dad said to get Husky instead. I have a Husky ratchet from Grandpa that's nice for what it is but dad hasn't been in the tool market in almost a decade. I know they're both MIC shit but is one a little better than the other?
>>
>>14693107

Nah, it's not the extra mating surfaces, it's the limitations of the amount of metal in the 3/8 drive. They're not expensive, just use one with a "no questions asked warranty." I've broken several, but it takes a lot to do it.
>>

Oh well yeah, I thought I mentioned that in the original post. I'd buy single sockets in 1/2" drive for larger bolts, I was just meaning for most of the other shit that shouldn't be more than 50-70 ft-ibs.
>>
>>14693143
Husky, preferably the "pro" black ones. be sure to get the ones with the lifetime warranty, if it ever breaks you can walk back into a home depot and get it swapped out no questions asked.

not that it matters, Husky and Craftsman are both subsidiaries of Stanley Black&Decker and they are all made in the same factories in China.

Can you tell if a brake rotor is worn down or warped just by looking at it or feeling it?

When I bought a used car and took it to a mechanic to look over it (noticed that everything with the car was fine but the steering wheel would shake at highway speeds if I was braking a lot during the drive) and he said that my rotors were warped and it would cost 500$ for him to replace all of them. Obviously I said I'd do it myself, bought new rotors and brake pads (thinking I'd change them too since why not, it doesn't cost that much) and when I took everything off I discovered the the rotors looked pretty flat, almost as new as the new rotors I had bought save for some rust, and that my tension rod bushings were leaking which is another known cause for highway speed wheel shake when braking. Replaced my tension rod bushings with polyurethane but now I'm wondering, should I just leave the old rotors and keep the new ones as backup ones when these rotors finally go or what? Is there some way I can look over them and check for warpage since I have them off the car?
>>
>>14695866
Any machinist will be able to tell you if the rotors are warped or not.
Check your rotors, look for "MIN TH ###" written somewhere on it, it stands for "minimum thickness ###" and the number is usually in mm. If the thickness of your rotors is less than that number, then you scrap them and put the new ones on.

You can resurface the old rotors if they are not worn and just a bit warped, I wouldn't throw away perfectly good rotors if they can still survive a brake pad set.
Just remember to store your new rotors somewhere dry until you need them.

Looking to completely destroy my automobile. I put comprehensive insurance on my truck a smidge over a month ago. Living in the rural area I see a lot of deer movement. Over the years I've learned their crossings and approximate times of movement.

How do I get insurance money smashing one of these bastards?
>Drive 2002 4x4 chebby
>Trans started slipping and it's getting pretty bad
>Needs a ton of front end work
>Willing to smash a deer and then some
>Want to cause enough damage so it can't be repaired

Current plan
>Nail the deer coming home from work around 4:35AM
>Planning on doing 60 in a 55
>Going to put the pedal to the metal prior to impact
>Picking the passenger side front just in case the furry critter rolls up onto the window

Should I aim for a tree immediately afterwards? Possibly a ditch? I have a helmet I'm ready to wear prior to the crash.

If I aim for the tree I'll have to do 35-40 and hope I can still clip the grazing critter. Maybe I'll hit with the driver side and then a good sized popple with the passenger.

Will this work? Deductible is $350.

11/10 underrated post
>>
>>14697277
Is there any logical reason why you would fucking say that post is underrated? Has anybody expressed any kind of dissatisfaction or criticism at all against it? Are you delusional? Are you reading replies that are nonexistant? Maybe you come from communities with voting systems, but there is literally no way that you could know what other people think of that post you just replied to here. Maybe it's psychological. Maybe it's your own post you're replying to, like a 12 year old fucktard liking his own facebook posts thinking his swelling autism is going unnoticed. Maybe your self esteem depends on you tricking yourself into thinking someone out there thinks your post is worth something. Or maybe you are just a retard, the worst kind of retard, the one who thinks he's smart, the one who thinks he's the only one to have gotten the joke, to have understood the post. Well, guess what, faggot, that post is by no definition underrated so why don't you do the world a favour and go check out what the bottom of your toilet smells like?

Are Kelley Blue Book and NADA accurate? Do they tend to run higher or lower of the actual value?

Are weathertech mats worth the cost?

Does it happen only in gear or in neutral as well?

Yes, extremely. You'd be better off swapping in a turbo rotary.

If it's not yelling at you you're fine.

NADA is good, KBB is overpriced. You should always jew people down anyway.

will mechanics use customer supplied parts?
>>
>>14701836

Yes. If they don't you don't want them working on your shit anyway.
>>
>>14701836
Depends on the mechanic, usually not at dealerships, usually will at indies depending on the part if it's something reasonable

If the power seats don't work and the central locking just makes clicking sounds from the dash when I try to trigger it with the key fob/doesn't work at all from the central button, and my OBD2 reader isn't returning any codes, what the fuck is up with my car? Corroded ground wire?
>>
>>14701836
Customer brings part for mechanic to install:
>it's the wrong part or for a different car entirely
>it's cheap ebay shit that doesn't fit/work right, customer blames mechanic
>it requires additional parts that customer declines (i.e. new gaskets), customer returns a week later and blames mechanic for not replacing additional parts
>it's cheap ebay shit that breaks after 5k, blames mechanic
>customer diagnoses a problem incorrectly, new part doesn't fix it, blames mechanic
>mechanic installs part and everything goes flawlessly, something unrelated breaks a month later, blames mechanic
Some will, some won't.

Kind of a long shot, but does anyone know if the factory head unit from the late 2000s Dodge Avengers is a standard double DIN size? It kinda looks like it might be. They're available for like $30 and have a build in aux jack so that'd be fucking amazing if they were.
>>
>>14702101
It's $30, if you wanna be our guinea pig I'm sure a lot of us would appreciate it.
>>
>>14702101
How about you take some measurements? A 2DIN is 180x100mm (7.08x3.93 in potato units), so go look at your unit and see if it has the same dimensions

There's a 08 350z GT with 82k miles that's being sold for 11k. The VIN said checked out. What's the shadiest thing that could be wrong with it?

Driving my 00 disco down the drive way and this happens

What do

You tow it and have the shaft replaced

I had some repair work done last year and ever since then my gas cap has been missing. I think the mechanic must have taken it off and forgot to put it back but whatever. Anyway, I've off getting a new one and have been driving without a gas cap for a few months and I just want to know if it could cause problems and if I should run out and get a new one.

I feel like my fuel economy has been a bit lower but I can't say for certain.

my parents 2005 sienna 3.3l v6 with 140k miles gets extremely low mileage. the built in display says 9.0mpg. it was 11.8 before i replaced the filter a few weeks ago, which wasn't replaced for years.

this is 95% city (brooklyn) driving, and i know there is a small rust hole right before the cat. its already the 3rd damn pipe, it keeps rusting out.

what else could be causing such low mileage? everything else sounds and feels ok.
my other theory is that my parents drive too aggressively.

Me again. Turns out it had nothing to do with the head gasket. It was a bad ignition module, coils 2 and 5 were just done. Basically I was only running on 4 out of 6 cylinders and the smoke was unused fuel. Although I had thought the smoke would be black in that case instead of white but whatever.

My mechanic was cool and only charged me for parts, didn't charge me on labor, since I just dropped $1300 on the new hg a month ago.

Can you pressure test the coolant system before you bleed it? Picked up the tool from O'Reilly and was planning on bleeding and pressure testing before I returned the tool and go out of town tomorrow, but it's pouring rain.

If I can, I'd like to fill her up and test the system just to see if anything else other than the two hoses I changed are awry, and then bleed it next week.
